Given Banach spaces E and F, we denote by ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$ the space of all k-homogeneous (continuous) polynomials from E into F, and by ${\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$ the subspace of polynomials which are weak-to-norm continuous on bounded sets. It is shown that if E has an unconditional finite dimensional expansion of the identity, the following assertions are equivalent: (a) ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)={\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$; (b) ${\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$ contains no copy of $c_0$; (c) ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$ contains no copy of $\ell_\infty$; (d) ${\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E,F)$ is complemented in ${\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$. This result was obtained by Kalton for linear operators. As an application, we show that if E has Pełczyński's property (V) and satisfies ${\mathcal P}(^k!E) ={\mathcal P}_{wb}(^k!E)$ then, for all F, every unconditionally converging $P\in{\mathcal P}(^k!E,F)$ is weakly compact. If E has an unconditional finite dimensional expansion of the identity, then the converse is also true.
We study tensor norms that destroy unconditionality in the following sense: for every Banach space $E$ with unconditional basis, the $n$-fold tensor product of $E$ (with the corresponding tensor norm) does not have unconditional basis. We establish an easy criterion to check weather a tensor norm destroys unconditionality or not. Using this test we get that all injective and projective tensor norms different from $\varepsilon$ and $π$ destroy unconditionality, both in full and symmetric tensor products. We present applications to polynomial ideals: we show that many usual polynomial ideals nev…
We prove that the dual or any quotient of a separable reflexive Banach space with the unconditional tree property has the unconditional tree property. Then we prove that a separable reflexive Banach space with the unconditional tree property embeds into a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis. This solves several long standing open problems. In particular, it yields that a quotient of a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional finite dimensional decomposition embeds into a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis.
We prove that weakly unconditionally Cauchy (w.u.C.) series and unconditionally converging (u.c.) series are preserved under the action of polynomials or holomorphic functions on Banach spaces, with natural restrictions in the latter case. Thus it is natural to introduce the unconditionally converging polynomials, defined as polynomials taking w.u.C. series into u.c.\ series, and analogously, the unconditionally converging holomorphic functions. We show that most of the classes of polynomials which have been considered in the literature consist of unconditionally converging polynomials. Then w…
We construct a Bourgain-Delbaen $\mathscr{L}_\infty$-space $\mathfrak{X}_{Kus}$ with strongly heterogenous structure: any bounded operator on $\mathfrak{X}_{Kus}$ is a compact perturbation of a multiple of the identity, whereas the space $\mathfrak{X}_{Kus}$ is saturated with unconditional basic sequences.
Letting $E$, $F$ be Banach spaces, the main two results of this paper are the following: (1) If every (linear bounded) operator $E\rightarrow F$ is unconditionally converging, then every polynomial from $E$ to $F$ is unconditionally converging (definition as in the linear case). (2) If $E$ has the Dunford-Pettis property and every operator $E\rightarrow F$ is weakly compact, then every $k$-linear mapping from $E^k$ into $F$ takes weak Cauchy sequences into norm convergent sequences. In particular, every polynomial from $\ell_\infty$ into a space containing no copy of $\ell_\infty$ is completel…
We show that the decreasing rearrangement of the Fourier series with respect to the Jacobi polynomials for functions in $L_p$ does not converge unless $p=2$. As a by-product of our work on quasi-greedy bases in $L_{p}(μ)$, we show that no normalized unconditional basis in $L_p$, $p\not=2$, can be semi-normalized in $L_q$ for $q\not=p$, thus extending a classical theorem of Kadets and Pełczy{ń}ski from 1968.
We study the existence of Daugavet- and delta-points in the unit sphere of Banach spaces with a $1$-unconditional basis. A norm one element $x$ in a Banach space is a Daugavet-point (resp. delta-point) if every element in the unit ball (resp. $x$ itself) is in the closed convex hull of unit ball elements that are almost at distance $2$ from $x$. A Banach space has the Daugavet property (resp. diametral local diameter two property) if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point (resp. delta-point). It is well-known that a Banach space with the Daugavet property does not have an uncon…
Let $X$ be a Banach space with an unconditional finite-dimensional Schauder decomposition $(E_n)$. We consider the general problem of characterizing conditions under which one can construct an unconditional basis for $X$ by forming an unconditional basis for each $E_n.$ For example, we show that if $\sup \dim E_n<\infty$ and $X$ has Gordon-Lewis local unconditional structure then $X$ has an unconditional basis of this type. We also give an example of a non-Hilbertian space $X$ with the property that whenever $Y$ is a closed subspace of $X$ with a UFDD $(E_n)$ such that $\sup\dim E_n<\infty$ th…
We prove that if the squares of two unconditional bases are equivalent up to a permutation, then the bases themselves are permutatively equivalent. This settles a twenty year-old question raised by Casazza and Kalton in [Uniqueness of unconditional bases in Banach spaces, Israel J. Math. 103 (1998), 141--175]. Solving this problem provides a new paradigm to study the uniqueness of unconditional basis in the general framework of quasi-Banach spaces. Multiple examples are given to illustrate how to put in practice this theoretical scheme. Among the main applications of this principle we obtain t…
A Banach space $X$ has Pełczy\' nski's property (V) if for every Banach space $Y$ every unconditionally converging operator $T\colon X\to Y$ is weakly compact. In 1962, Aleksander Pełczy\' nski showed that $C(K)$ spaces for a compact Hausdorff space $K$ enjoy the property (V), and some generalizations of this theorem have been proved since then. We introduce several possibilities of quantifying the property (V). We prove some characterizations of the introduced quantitative versions of this property, which allow us to prove a quantitative version of Pelczynski's result about $C(K)$ spaces and …
In this paper we investigate a Gaussian average property of Banach spaces. This property is weaker than the Gordon Lewis property but closely related to this and other unconditional structures. It is also shown that this property implies that certain Hilbert space valued operators defined on subspaces of the given space can be extended.
We introduce the class of Orlicz-Pettis polynomials between Banach spaces, defined by their action on weakly unconditionally Cauchy series. We give a number of equivalent definitions, examples and counterexamples which highlight the differences between these polynomials and the corresponding linear operators.
We give an intrinsic characterisation of the separable reflexive Banach spaces that embed into separable reflexive spaces with an unconditional basis all of whose normalised block sequences with the same growth rate are equivalent. This uses methods of E. Odell and T. Schlumprecht.
We introduce a new diametral notion for points of the unit sphere of Banach spaces, that naturally complements the notion of Delta-points, but is weaker than the notion of Daugavet points. We prove that this notion can be used to provide a new geometric characterization of the Daugavet property, as well as to recover -- and even to provide new -- results about Daugavet points in various contexts such as absolute sums of Banach spaces or projective tensor products. Finally, we show that this notion leads to powerful new ideas for renorming questions, and that those ideas can be combined with pr…
We give a characterization of the existence of copies of $c_{0}$ in Banach spaces in terms of indexes. As an application, we deduce new proofs of James Distortion theorem and Bessaga-Pełczynski theorem about weakly unconditionally Cauchy series.
Following Davie's example of a Banach space failing the approximation property [D], we show how to construct a Banach space E which is asymptotically Hilbertian and fails the approximation property. Moreover, the space E is shown to be a subspace of a space with an unconditional basis which is ``almost'' a weak Hilbert space and which can be written as the direct sum of two subspaces all of whose subspaces have the approximation property.
It is shown that if a Banach space X has the weak Banach-Saks property and the weak fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings and Y satisfies property asymptotic (P) (which is weaker than the condition WCS(Y)>1), then the direct sum of X and Y endowed with a strictly monotone norm enjoys the weak fixed point property. The same conclusion is valid if X admits a 1-unconditional basis.
We introduce the concept of strategically reproducible bases in Banach spaces and show that operators which have large diagonal with respect to strategically reproducible bases are factors of the identity. We give several examples of classical Banach spaces in which the Haar system is strategically reproducible: multi-parameter Lebesgue spaces, mixed-norm Hardy spaces and most significantly the space $L^1$. Moreover, we show the strategical reproducibility is inherited by unconditional sums.
We show that for spaces with 1-unconditional bases lushness, the alternative Daugavet property and numerical index~1 are equivalent. In the class of rearrangement invariant (r.i.)\ sequence spaces the only examples of spaces with these properties are $c_0$, $\ell_1$ and $\ell_\infty$. The only lush r.i.\ separable function space on $[0,1]$ is $L_1[0,1]$; the same space is the only r.i.\ separable function space on $[0,1]$ with the Daugavet property over the reals.
Let $X$ be a Banach space with separable dual. It is proved that for every $\varepsilon\in (0,1)$, $X$ embeds isometrically into a Banach space $W$ with a shrinking basis $(w_n)$ which is $(1+ \varepsilon)$-monotone. Moreover, if $X$ has further an FDD $(E_n)$ whose strong bimonotonicity projection constant is not larger than $\mathcal{D}$, then $(w_n)$ has strong bimonotonicity projection constant not exceeding $\mathcal{D}(1 +\varepsilon)$. Further, if $(E_n)$ is $\mathcal{C}$-unconditional then $(w_n)$ is $\mathcal{C}(1 + \varepsilon)$-unconditional. The proof uses renorming and skipped blo…
After sketching the basic theory of injective ideals of homogeneous polynomials, we characterize injective polynomial ideals by means of a domination property and applications of this characterization to some classical operator ideals and to composition polynomial ideals are provided.
We construct a continuum of mutually non-isomorphic separable Banach spaces which are complemented in each other. Consequently, the Schroeder-Bernstein Index of any of these spaces is $2^{\aleph_0}$. Our construction is based on a Banach space introduced by W. T. Gowers and B. Maurey in 1997. We also use classical descriptive set theory methods, as in some work of V. Ferenczi and C. Rosendal, to improve some results of P. G. Casazza and of N. J. Kalton on the Schroeder-Bernstein Property for spaces with an unconditional finite-dimensional Schauder decomposition.
We present many examples of Banach spaces of linear operators and homogeneous polynomials without the approximation property, thus improving results of Dineen and Mujica [11] and Godefroy and Saphar [13].
A number of sharp inequalities are proved for the space ${\mathcal P}\left(^2D\left(\fracπ{4}\right)\right)$ of 2-homogeneous polynomials on ${\mathbb R}^2$ endowed with the supremum norm on the sector $D\left(\fracπ{4}\right):=\left\{e^{iθ}:θ\in \left[0,\fracπ{4}\right]\right\}$. Among the main results we can find sharp Bernstein and Markov inequalities and the calculation of the polarization constant and the unconditional constant of the canonical basis of the space ${\mathcal P}\left(^2D\left(\fracπ{4}\right)\right)$.
These notes are dedicated to the study of the complexity of several classes of separable Banach spaces. We compute the complexity of the Banach-Saks property, the alternating Banach-Saks property, the complete continuous property, and the LUST property. We also show that the weak Banach-Saks property, the Schur property, the Dunford-Pettis property, the analytic Radon-Nikodym property, the set of Banach spaces whose set of unconditionally converging operators is complemented in its bounded oper- ators, the set of Banach spaces whose set of weakly compact operators is complemented in its bounde…
A Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis is defined to have the restricted quotient hereditarily indecomposable (QHI) property if $X/Y$ is hereditarily indecomposable (HI) for any infinite codimensional subspace $Y$ with a successive finite-dimensional decomposition on the basis of $X$. A reflexive space with the restricted QHI property is in particular HI, has HI dual, and is saturated with subspaces which are HI and have HI dual. The following dichotomy theorem is proved: any infinite dimensional Banach space contains a quotient of subspace which either has an unconditional basis, or has the…
We study the class of Banach lattices that are positively polynomially Schur. Plenty of examples and counterexamples are provided, lattice properties of this class are proved, arbitrary $L_p(μ)$-spaces are shown to be positively polynomially Schur, lattice analogues of results on Banach spaces are obtained and relationships with the positive Schur and the weak Dunford-Pettis properties are established.
We study the problem of extension and lifting of operators belonging to certain operator ideals, as well as that of their associated polynomials and holomorphic functions. Our results provide a characterization of $\mathcal{L}_1$ and $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$-spaces that includes and extends those of Lindenstrauss-Rosenthal \cite{LR} using compact operators and González-Gutiérrez \cite{GG} using compact polynomials. We display several examples to show the difference between extending and lifting compact (resp. weakly compact, unconditionally convergent, separable and Rosenthal) operators to opera…
A Banach space is {\it polynomially Schur} if sequential convergence against analytic polynomials implies norm convergence. Carne, Cole and Gamelin show that a space has this property and the Dunford-Pettis property if and only if it is Schur. Herein is defined a reasonable generalization of the Dunford--Pettis property using polynomials of a fixed homogeneity. It is shown, for example, that a Banach space will has the $P_N$ Dunford--Pettis property if and only if every weakly compact $N-$homogeneous polynomial (in the sense of Ryan) on the space is completely continuous. A certain geometric c…
A Banach space X has Pelczynski's property (V) if for every Banach space Y every unconditionally converging operator T: X -> Y is weakly compact. H. Pfitzner proved that C*-algebras have Pelczynski's property (V). In the preprint "H. Krulisova: Quantification of Pelczynski's property (V)" the author explores possible quantifications of the property (V) and shows that C(K) spaces for a compact Hausdorff space K enjoy a quantitative version of the property (V). In this paper we generalize this result by quantifying Pfitzner's theorem. Moreover, we prove that in dual Banach spaces a quantitative …
