We study the class of Banach lattices that are positively polynomially Schur. Plenty of examples and counterexamples are provided, lattice properties of this class are proved, arbitrary $L_p(μ)$-spaces are shown to be positively polynomially Schur, lattice analogues of results on Banach spaces are obtained and relationships with the positive Schur and the weak Dunford-Pettis properties are established.
We show that a minor refinement of the Bourgain-Rosenthal construction of a Banach space without the Radon-Nikodym property which contains no bounded $δ$-trees yields a space with the Daugavet property and the Schur property. Using this example we answer some open questions on the structure of such spaces; in particular we show that the Daugavet property is not inherited by ultraproducts.
We characterize the positive Schur property in the positive projective tensor products of Banach lattices, we establish the connection with the weak operator topology and we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the space of regular multilinear operators/homogeneous polynomials taking values in a Dedekind complete Banach lattice to have the positive Schur property.
It was recently shown in [24] that the Banach space operator relations Equivalence After Extension (EAE) and Schur Coupling (SC) do not coincide by characterizing these relations for operators acting on essentially incomparable Banach spaces. The examples that prove the non-coincidence are Fredholm operators, which is a subclass of relatively regular operators, the latter being operators with complementable kernels and ranges. In this paper we analyse the relations EAE and SC for the class of relatively regular operators, leading to an equivalent Banach space operator problem from which we der…
In 1994 H. Bart and V.É. Tsekanovskii posed the question whether the Banach space operator relations matricial coupling (MC), equivalence after extension (EAE) and Schur coupling (SC) coincide, leaving only the implication EAE/MC $\Rightarrow$ SC open. Despite several affirmative results, in this paper we show that the answer in general is no. This follows from a complete description of EAE and SC for the case that the operators act on essentially incomparable Banach spaces, which also leads to a new characterization of the notion of essential incomparability. Concretely, the forward shift ope…
It is known that two Banach space operators that are Schur coupled are also equivalent after extension, or equivalently, matricially coupled. The converse implication, that operators which are equivalent after extension or matricially coupled are also Schur coupled, was only known for Fredholm Hilbert space operators and Fredholm Banach space operators with index 0. We prove that this implication also holds for Hilbert space operators with closed range, generalizing the result for Fredholm operators, and Banach space operators that can be approximated in operator norm by invertible operators. …
Schur coupling (SC) and equivalence after extension (EAE) are important relations for bounded operators on Banach spaces. It has been known for 30 years that the former implies the latter, but only recently Ter Horst, Messerschmidt, Ran and Roelands disproved the converse by constructing a pair of Fredholm operators which are EAE, but not SC. Motivated by this result, we investigate when EAE and SC coincide for Fred\-holm operators. Fredholm operators which are EAE have the same Fredholm index. Surprisingly, we find that for each integer $k$ and every pair of Banach spaces $(\mathcal{X},\mathc…
We prove that every Banach space, not necessarily separable, can be isometrically embedded into a $\mathcal L_{\infty}$-space in a way that the corresponding quotient has the Radon-Nikodym and the Schur properties. As a consequence, we obtain $\mathcal L_\infty$ spaces of arbitrary large densities with the Schur and the Radon-Nikodym properties. This extents the a classical result by J. Bourgain and G. Pisier.
Continuing the research on the Banach-Saks and Schur properties started in (cf. M. Frank, A. A. Pavlov, Banach-Saks properties of C*-algebras and Hilbert C*-modules (submitted)) we investigate analogous properties in the module context. As an environment serves the class of Hilbert C*-modules. Some properties of weak module topologies on Hilbert C*-modules are described. Natural module analogues of the classical weak Banach-Saks and the classical Schur properties are defined and studied. A number of useful characterizations of properties of Hilbert C*-modules is obtained. In particular, some i…
A Banach space is {\it polynomially Schur} if sequential convergence against analytic polynomials implies norm convergence. Carne, Cole and Gamelin show that a space has this property and the Dunford-Pettis property if and only if it is Schur. Herein is defined a reasonable generalization of the Dunford--Pettis property using polynomials of a fixed homogeneity. It is shown, for example, that a Banach space will has the $P_N$ Dunford--Pettis property if and only if every weakly compact $N-$homogeneous polynomial (in the sense of Ryan) on the space is completely continuous. A certain geometric c…
We prove some general results on sequential convergence in Fréchet lattices that yield, as particular instances, the following results regarding a closed ideal I of a Banach lattice E: (i) If two of the lattices E, I and E/I have the positive Schur property (the Schur property, respectively) then the third lattice has the positive Schur property (the Schur property, respectively) as well; (ii) If I and E/I have the dual positive Schur property, then E also has this property; (iii) If I has the weak Dunford-Pettis property and E/I has the positive Schur property, then E has the weak Dunford-Pet…
For each ordinal $0\leqslant ξ\leqslant ω_1$, we introduce the notion of a $ξ$-completely continuous operator and prove that for each ordinal $0< ξ< ω_1$, the class $\mathfrak{V}_ξ$ of $ξ$-completely continuous operators is a closed, injective operator ideal which is not surjective, symmetric, or idempotent. We prove that for distinct $0\leqslant ξ, ζ\leqslant ω_1$, the classes of $ξ$-completely continuous operators and $ζ$-completely continuous operators are distinct. We also introduce an ordinal rank $\textsf{v}$ for operators such that $\textsf{v}(A)=ω_1$ if and only if $A$ is completely co…
A separable Banach space X contains $\ell_1$ isomorphically if and only if X has a bounded wc_0^*-stable biorthogonal system. The dual of a separable Banach space X fails the Schur property if and only if X has a bounded wc_0^*-biorthogonal system.
We study quantitative versions of the Schur property and weak sequential completeness, proceeding thus with investigations started by G. Godefroy, N. Kalton and D. Li and continued by H. Pfitzner and the authors. We show that the Schur property of $\ell_1$ holds quantitatively in the strongest possible way and construct an example of a Banach space which is quantitatively weakly sequentially complete, has the Schur property but fails the quantitative form of the Schur property.
In recent years the coincidence of the operator relations equivalence after extension (EAE) and Schur coupling (SC) was settled for the Hilbert space case. For Banach space operators, it is known that SC implies EAE, but the converse implication is only known for special classes of operators, such as Fredholm operators with index zero and operators that can in norm be approximated by invertible operators. In this paper we prove that the implication EAE $\Rightarrow$ SC also holds for inessential Banach space operators. The inessential operators were introduced as a generalization of the compac…
Schur's test states that if $K:X\times Y\to\mathbb{C}$ satisfies $\int_Y |K(x,y)|dν(y)\leq C$ and $\int_X |K(x,y)|dμ(x)\leq C$, then the associated integral operator acts boundedly on $L^p$ for all $p\in [1,\infty]$. We derive a variant of this result ensuring boundedness on the (weighted) mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces $L_w^{p,q}$ for all $p,q\in [1,\infty]$. For non-negative integral kernels our criterion is sharp; i.e., it is satisfied if and only if the integral operator acts boundedly on all of the mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces. Motivated by this criterion, we introduce solid Banach modules $\ma…
Given a domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ and a collection of test functions $Ψ$ on $Ω$, we consider the complex-valued $Ψ$-Schur-Agler class associated to the pair $(Ω,\,Ψ)$. In this article, we characterize interpolating sequences for the associated Banach algebra of which the $Ψ$-Schur-Agler class is the closed unit ball. When $Ω$ is the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$ and the class of test function includes only the identity function on $\mathbb{D}$, the aforementioned algebra is the algebra of bounded holomorphic functions on $\mathbb{D}$ and in this case, our characte…
In this paper we study $\ell_1$-like properties for some Lipschitz-free spaces. The main result states that, under some natural conditions, the Lipschitz-free space over a proper metric space linearly embeds into an $\ell_1$-sum of finite dimensional subspaces of itself. We also give a sufficient condition for a Lipschitz-free space to have the Schur property, the $1$-Schur property and the $1$-strong Schur property respectively. We finish by studying those properties on a new family of examples, namely the Lipschitz-free spaces over metric spaces originating from $p$-Banach spaces, for $p$ in…
In this paper we first take a detail survey of the study of the Banach-Saks property of Banach spaces and then show the Banach-Saks property of the product spaces generated by a finite number of Banach spaces having the Banach-Saks property. A more general inequality for integrals of a class of composite functions is also given by using this property.
Employing a construction of Tsirelson-like spaces due to Argyros and Deliyanni, we show that the class of all Banach spaces which are isomorphic to a subspace of $c_{0}$ is a complete analytic set with respect to the Effros Borel structure of separable Banach spaces. Moreover, the classes of all separable spaces with the Schur property and of all separable spaces with the Dunford-Pettis property are $\mathbfΠ^{1}_{2}$-complete.
We show that the dual to any subspace of $c_0(Γ)$ has the strongest possible quantitative version of the Schur property. Further, we establish relationship between the quantitative Schur property and quantitative versions of the Dunford-Pettis property. Finally, we apply these results to show, in particular, that any subspace of the space of compact operators on $\ell_p$ ($1<p<\infty$) with Dunford-Pettis property satisfies automatically both its quantitative versions.
We show that if a Banach lattice is projective, then every bounded sequence that can be mapped by a homomorphism onto the basis of $c_0$ must contain an $\ell_1$-subsequence. As a consequence, if Banach lattices $\ell_p$ or $FBL[E]$ are projective, then $p=1$ or $E$ has the Schur property, respectively. On the other hand, we show that $C(K)$ is projective whenever $K$ is an absolute neighbourhood retract, answering a question by de Pagter and Wickstead.
Let $G$ be an infinite locally compact abelian group. If $X$ is Banach space, we show that if every bounded Fourier multiplier $T$ on $L^2(G)$ has the property that $T\ot Id_X$ is bounded on $L^2(G,X)$ then the Banach space $X$ is isomorphic to a Hilbert space. Moreover, if $1<p<\infty$, $p\not=2$, we prove that there exists a bounded Fourier multiplier on $L^p(G)$ which is not completely bounded. Finally, we examine unconditionality from the point of view of Schur multipliers. More precisely, we give several necessary and sufficient conditions to determine if an operator space is completely i…
Several recent papers were devoted to various modifications of limited, Grothendieck, and Dunford--Pettis operators, etc., through involving the Banach lattice structure. In the present paper, it is shown that many of these operators appear as operators affiliated to well known properties of Banach lattices, like the disjoint (dual) Schur property, the disjoint Grothendieck property, the property (d), and the sequential w*-continuity of the lattice operations. It is proved that the spaces consisting of regularly versions of the above operators are all Banach spaces. The domination problem for …
A Banach space E is said to have Property (w) if every (bounded linear) operator from E into E' is weakly compact. We give some interesting examples of James type Banach spaces with Property (w). We also consider the passing of Property (w) from E to C(K,E).
A Banach space X is said to have the Tsirelson property if it does not contain subspaces that are isomorphic to l_{p}, p in [1,infty) or c_{0}. The article contains a quite simple method to producing Banach spaces with the Tsirelson property.
The aim of this note is to consider different notions for the Banach-Saks property in locally solid vector lattices as an extension for the known concepts of the Banach-Saks property in Banach lattices. We investigate relations between them; in particular, we shall characterize spaces in which, these notions agree.
For $0\leqslant ξ\leqslant ω_1$, we define the notion of $ξ$-weakly precompact and $ξ$-weakly compact sets in Banach spaces and prove that a set is $ξ$-weakly precompact if and only if its weak closure is $ξ$-weakly compact. We prove a quantified version of Grothendieck's compactness principle and the characterization of Schur spaces obtained by Dowling et al. For $0\leqslant ξ\leqslant ω_1$, we prove that a Banach space $X$ has the $ξ$-Schur property if and only if every $ξ$-weakly compact set is contained in the closed, convex hull of a weakly null (equivalently, norm null) sequence.
Motivated by the equivalent definition of a continuous operator between Banach spaces in terms of weakly null nets, we introduce unbounded continuous operators by replacing weak convergence with the unbounded absolutely weak convergence ( $uaw$-convergence) in the definition of a continuous operator between Banach lattices. We characterize order continuous Banach lattices and reflexive Banach lattices in terms of these spaces of operators. Moreover, motivated by characterizing of a reflexive Banach lattice in terms of unbounded absolutely weakly Cauchy sequences, we consider pre-unbounded oper…
These notes are dedicated to the study of the complexity of several classes of separable Banach spaces. We compute the complexity of the Banach-Saks property, the alternating Banach-Saks property, the complete continuous property, and the LUST property. We also show that the weak Banach-Saks property, the Schur property, the Dunford-Pettis property, the analytic Radon-Nikodym property, the set of Banach spaces whose set of unconditionally converging operators is complemented in its bounded oper- ators, the set of Banach spaces whose set of weakly compact operators is complemented in its bounde…
We present a generalization of the Radon-Riesz property to sequences of continuous functions with values in uniformly convex and uniformly smooth Banach spaces.
A Banach space has the Schur property when every weakly convergent sequence converges in norm. We prove a Schur-like property for measures: if a sequence of finite signed Borel measures on a Polish space is such that it is bounded in total variation norm and such that for each bounded Lipschitz function the sequence of integrals of this function with respect to these measures converges, then the sequence converges in dual bounded Lipschitz norm or Fortet-Mourier norm to a measure. Moreover, we prove three consequences of this result: the first is equivalence of concepts of equicontinuity in th…
Reconstruction property in Banach spaces introduced and studied by Casazza and Christensen in [1]. In this paper we introduce reconstruction property in Banach spaces which satisfy $\mathfrak{I}$-property. A characterization of reconstruction property in Banach spaces which satisfy $\mathfrak{I}$-property in terms of frames in Banach spaces is obtained. Banach frames associated with reconstruction property are discussed.
We extend the well-known criterion of Lotz for the dual Radon-Nikodym property (RNP) of Banach lattices to finitely generated Banach $C(K)$-modules and Banach $C(K)$-modules of finite multiplicity. Namely, we prove that if $X$ is a Banach space from one of these classes then its Banach dual $X^\star$ has the RNP iff $X$ does not contain a closed subspace isomorphic to $\ell^1$.
We consider a Banach space, which comes naturally from c0 and it appears in the literature, and we prove that this space has the fixed point property for non-expansive mappings.
In this paper we investigate a Gaussian average property of Banach spaces. This property is weaker than the Gordon Lewis property but closely related to this and other unconditional structures. It is also shown that this property implies that certain Hilbert space valued operators defined on subspaces of the given space can be extended.
We present many examples of Banach spaces of linear operators and homogeneous polynomials without the approximation property, thus improving results of Dineen and Mujica [11] and Godefroy and Saphar [13].
We give a characterisation of the separable Banach spaces with the Daugavet property which is applied to study the Daugavet property in the projective tensor product of an $L$-embedded space with another non-zero Banach space. The former characterisation also motivates the introduction of two indices related to the Daugavet property and a short study of them.
We prove that for any separable Banach space $X$, there exists a compact metric space which is homeomorphic to the Cantor space and whose Lipschitz-free space contains a complemented subspace isomorphic to $X$. As a consequence we give an example of a compact metric space which is homeomorphic to the Cantor space and whose Lipschitz-free space fails the approximation property and we prove that there exists an uncountable family of topologically equivalent distances on the Cantor space whose free spaces are pairwise non isomorphic. We also prove that the free space over a countable compact metr…
Suppose $E$ is a Banach lattice. Recently, there have been some motivating contexts regarding the known Banach-Saks property and the Grothendieck property from an order point of view. In this paper, we establish these results for operators that enjoy different types considered for the Banach-Saks property as well as for different notions related to the Grothendieck property. In particular, beside other results, we characterize order continuity and reflexivity of Banach lattices in terms of the corresponding bounded operators defined on them.
We are interested in a sufficient condition given in an article by P. Lefèvre, É. Matheron and A. Primot to obtain the Blum-Hanson Property and we then partially answer two questions asked in this same article on other possible conditions to have this property for a separable Banach space.
Let $A$ and $B$ be commutative semisimple Banach algebras. In this paper, the $BSE$ and $BED$- property of tensor Banach algebra $A{\otimes}_γ B$ with respect to the Banach algebras $A$ and $B$ are assesed. In particular, $BSE$ and $BED$- structure of vector-valued group algebra $L_{1}(G, A)$ and $C^{*}$- algebra $C_{0}(X, A)$ characterized.
In this paper, we introduce and study the concept of L-Dunford-Pettis sets and L-Dunford-Pettis property in Banach spaces. Next, we give a characterization of the L-Dunford-Pettis property with respect to some well-known geometric properties of Banach spaces. Finally, some complementability of operators on Banach spaces with the L-Dunford-Pettis property are also investigated
The main result of this paper establishes that the known Arazy-Cwikel property holds for classes of uniformly K-monotone spaces in the quasi-Banach setting provided that the initial couple is mutually closed. As a consequence, we get that the class of all quasi-Banach K-spaces (i.e., interpolation spaces which are described by the real K-method) with respect to an arbitrary mutually closed Banach couple enjoys the Arazy-Cwikel property. Another consequence complements some previous results by Bykov and Ovchinnikov, showing that this property holds also for the class of all interpolation quasi-…
The principal aim of this paper is to study the Banach-Saks property when the speed of convergence of a Cesaro mean sequence can be chosen independtly from the choice of the initial sequence. We establish links between the uniform Banach-Saks property, properties $(A_\infty)$ of Partington and the $p$-Banach-Saks property. We also prove that the $p$-Banach-Saks property and the strong $p$-Banach-Saks property are equivalent. Many examples are given and we apply the results to the symmetric Kottman constant.
We prove that a Banach lattice $X$ which does not contain the $l^n_{\infty}$-uniformly has an equivalent norm which is uniformly Kadec-Klee for a natural topology $τ$ on $X$. In case the Banach lattice is purely atomic, the topology $τ$ is the coordinatewise convergence topology.
We continue the investigation of the behaviour of diameter two properties in tensor products of Banach spaces. Our main result shows that the symmetric strong diameter two property is stable by taking projective tensor products. We also prove a result for the symmetric strong diameter two property for the injective tensor product.
In this work, we introduce the notion of Ball dentable property in Banach spaces. We study certain stability results for the $w^*$-Ball dentable property leading to a discussion on Ball dentability in the context of ideals of Banach spaces. We prove that the $w^*$-Ball-dentable property can be lifted from an $M$-ideal to the whole Banach Space. We also prove similar results for strict ideals of a Banach space. We note that the space $C(K,X)^*$ has $w*$-Ball dentable property when $K$ is dispersed and $X^\ast$ has the $w^*$-Ball dentable property.
We investigate possible quantifications of the Banach-Saks property and the weak Banach-Saks property. We prove quantitative versions of relationships of the Banach-Saks property of a set with norm compactness and weak compactness. We further establish a quantitative version of the characterization of the weak Banach-Saks property of a set using uniform weak convergence and $\ell_1$-spreading models. We also study the case of the unit ball and in this case we prove a dichotomy which is an analogue of the James distortion theorem for $\ell_1$-spreading models.
