Letting $E$, $F$ be Banach spaces, the main two results of this paper are the following: (1) If every (linear bounded) operator $E\rightarrow F$ is unconditionally converging, then every polynomial from $E$ to $F$ is unconditionally converging (definition as in the linear case). (2) If $E$ has the Dunford-Pettis property and every operator $E\rightarrow F$ is weakly compact, then every $k$-linear mapping from $E^k$ into $F$ takes weak Cauchy sequences into norm convergent sequences. In particular, every polynomial from $\ell_\infty$ into a space containing no copy of $\ell_\infty$ is completely continuous. This solves a problem raised by the authors in a previous paper, where they showed that there exist nonweakly compact polynomials from $\ell_\infty$ into any nonreflexive space.
In the present paper we study unconditionally $p$-converging operators and Dunford-Pettis property of order $p$. New characterizations of unconditionally $p$-converging operators and Dunford-Pettis property of order $p$ are established. Six quantities are defined to measure how far an operator is from being unconditionally $p$-converging. We prove quantitative versions of relationships of completely continuous operators,unconditionally $p$-converging operators and unconditionally converging operators. We further investigate possible quantifications of the Dunford-Pettis property of order $p$.
We construct an indecomposable reflexive Banach space $X_{ius}$ such that every infinite dimensional closed subspace contains an unconditional basic sequence. We also show that every operator $T\in \mathcal{B}(X_{ius})$ is of the form $λI+S$ with $S$ a strictly singular operator.
We prove that every unconditionally summable sequence in a Hilbert space can be factorized as the product of a square summable scalar sequence and a Bessel sequence. Some consequences on the representation of unconditionally convergent multipliers are obtained, thus providing positive answers to a conjecture by Balazs and Stoeva in some particular cases.
In 1947, M. S. Macphail constructed a series in $\ell_{1}$ that converges unconditionally but does not converge absolutely. According to the literature, this result helped Dvoretzky and Rogers to finally answer a long standing problem of Banach Space Theory, by showing that in all infinite-dimensional Banach spaces, there exists an unconditionally summable sequence that fails to be absolutely summable. More precisely, the Dvoretzky--Rogers Theorem asserts that in every infinite-dimensional Banach space $E$ there exists an unconditionally convergent series ${\textstyle\sum}x^{(j)}$ such that ${…
These notes are dedicated to the study of the complexity of several classes of separable Banach spaces. We compute the complexity of the Banach-Saks property, the alternating Banach-Saks property, the complete continuous property, and the LUST property. We also show that the weak Banach-Saks property, the Schur property, the Dunford-Pettis property, the analytic Radon-Nikodym property, the set of Banach spaces whose set of unconditionally converging operators is complemented in its bounded oper- ators, the set of Banach spaces whose set of weakly compact operators is complemented in its bounde…
A Banach space $X$ has Pełczy\' nski's property (V) if for every Banach space $Y$ every unconditionally converging operator $T\colon X\to Y$ is weakly compact. In 1962, Aleksander Pełczy\' nski showed that $C(K)$ spaces for a compact Hausdorff space $K$ enjoy the property (V), and some generalizations of this theorem have been proved since then. We introduce several possibilities of quantifying the property (V). We prove some characterizations of the introduced quantitative versions of this property, which allow us to prove a quantitative version of Pelczynski's result about $C(K)$ spaces and …
We show that, on any given finite Borel measure space with the ambient space being a Polish metric space, every Borel real-valued function is almost a bounded, uniformly continuous function in the sense that for every $\varepsilon > 0$ there is some bounded, uniformly continuous function such that the set of points at which they would not agree has measure $< \varepsilon$. In particular, this result complements the known result of almost uniform continuity of Borel real-valued functions on a finite Radon measure space whose ambient space is a locally compact metric space. As direct application…
Given a function f: N --> (omega+1)-{0}, we say that a faithfully indexed sequence {a_n: n in N} of elements of a topological group G is: (i) f-Cauchy productive (f-productive) provided that the sequence {prod_{n=0}^m a_n^{z(n)}: m in N} is left Cauchy (converges to some element of G, respectively) for each function z: N --> Z such that |z(n)| <= f(n) for every n in N; (ii) unconditionally f-Cauchy productive (unconditionally f-productive) provided that the sequence {a_{s(n)}: n in N\} is (f\circ s)-Cauchy productive (respectively, (f\circ s)-productive) for every bijection s: N --> N. (Biject…
A Banach space X has Pelczynski's property (V) if for every Banach space Y every unconditionally converging operator T: X -> Y is weakly compact. H. Pfitzner proved that C*-algebras have Pelczynski's property (V). In the preprint "H. Krulisova: Quantification of Pelczynski's property (V)" the author explores possible quantifications of the property (V) and shows that C(K) spaces for a compact Hausdorff space K enjoy a quantitative version of the property (V). In this paper we generalize this result by quantifying Pfitzner's theorem. Moreover, we prove that in dual Banach spaces a quantitative …
Let $A,X,Y$ be Banach spaces and $A\times X\to Y$, $(a,x)\mapsto ax$, be a continuous bilinear function, called a *Banach action*. We say that this action *preserves unconditional convergence* if for every bounded sequence $(a_n)_{n\inω}$ in $A$ and unconditionally convergent series $\sum_{n\inω}x_n$ in $X$ the series $\sum_{n\inω}a_nx_n$ is unconditionally convergent. We prove that a Banach action $A\times X\to Y$ preserves unconditional convergence if and only if for any linear functional $y^*\in Y^*$ the operator $D_{y^*}:X\to A^*$, $D_{y^*}(x)(a)=y^*(ax)$, is absolutely summing. Combining …
A topological space $X$ is $κ$-Fréchet--Urysohn if for every open subset $U$ of $X$ and every $x\in \overline{U}$ there exists a sequence in $ U$ converging to $x$. We prove that every $κ$-Fréchet--Urysohn Tychonoff space $X$ is Ascoli. We apply this statement and some of known results to characterize the $κ$-Fréchet--Urysohn property in various important classes of locally convex spaces. In particular, answering a question posed in [7] we obtain that $C_p(X)$ is Ascoli iff $X$ has the property $(κ)$.
In this paper we extend the scope of three important results of the linear theory of absolutely summing operators. The first one was proved by Bu and Kranz in \cite{BK} and it asserts that a continuous linear operator between Banach spaces takes almost unconditionally summable sequences into Cohen strongly $q$-summable sequences for any $q\geq2$, whenever its adjoint is $p$-summing for some $p\geq1$. The second of them states that $p$-summing operators with hilbertian domain are Cohen strongly $q$-summing operators ($1<p,q<\infty$), this result is due to Bu \cite{Bu}. The third one is due to K…
