These are lecture notes from a course I gave at the University of Wisconsin during the Spring semester of 1993. Part 1 is concerned with Borel hierarchies. Section 13 contains an unpublished theorem of Fremlin concerning Borel hierarchies and MA. Section 14 and 15 contain new results concerning the lengths of Borel hierarchies in the Cohen and random real model. Part 2 contains standard results on the theory of Analytic sets. Section 25 contains Harrington's Theorem that it is consistent to have $Π^1_2$ sets of arbitrary cardinality. Part 3 has the usual separation theorems. Part 4 gives some applications of Gandy forcing. We reverse the usual trend and use forcing arguments instead of Baire category. In particular, Louveau's Theorem on $Π^0_α$ hyp-sets has a simpler proof using forcing.
We construct Borel graphs which settle several questions in descriptive graph combinatorics. These include "Can the Baire measurable chromatic number of a locally finite Borel graph exceed the usual chromatic number by more than one?" and "Can marked groups with isomorphic Cayley graphs have Borel chromatic numbers for their shift graphs which differ by more than one?" We also provide a new bound for Borel chromatic numbers of graphs whose connected components all have two ends.
Answering one of the main questions of [FHK14, Chapter 7], we show that there is a tight connection between the depth of a classifiable shallow theory $T$ and the Borel rank of the isomorphism relation $\cong^κ_T$ on its models of size $κ$, for $κ$ any cardinal satisfying $κ^{< κ} = κ> 2^{\aleph_0}$. This is achieved by establishing a link between said rank and the $\mathcal{L}_{\infty κ}$-Scott height of the $κ$-sized models of $T$, and yields to the following descriptive set-theoretical analogue of Shelah's Main Gap Theorem: Given a countable complete first-order theory $T$, either $\cong^κ_…
We give, for each countable ordinal $ξ\geq 1$, an example of a ${\bfΔ}^0_2$ countable union of Borel rectangles that cannot be decomposed into countably many ${\bfΠ}^0_ξ$ rectangles. In fact, we provide a graph of a partial injection with disjoint domain and range, which is a difference of two closed sets, and which has no ${\bfΔ}^0_ξ$-measurable countable coloring.
There is a fascinating interplay and overlap between recursion theory and descriptive set theory. A particularly beautiful source of such interaction has been Martin's conjecture on Turing invariant functions. This longstanding open problem in recursion theory has connected to many problems in descriptive set theory, particularly in the theory of countable Borel equivalence relations. In this paper, we shall give an overview of some work that has been done on Martin's conjecture, and applications that it has had in descriptive set theory. We will present a long unpublished result of Slaman and…
We prove a number of results about countable Borel equivalence relations with forcing constructions and arguments. These results reveal hidden regularity properties of Borel complete sections on certain orbits. As consequences they imply the nonexistence of Borel complete sections with certain features.
We give a partial answer to an important open problem in descriptive set theory, the Decomposability Conjecture for Borel functions on an analytic subset of a Polish space to a separable metrizable space. Our techniques employ deep results from effective descriptive set theory and recursion theory. In fact it is essential to extend several prominent results in recursion theory (\eg the Shore-Slaman Join Theorem) to the setting of Polish spaces. As a by-product we give both positive and negative results on the Martin Conjecture on the degree preserving Borel functions between Polish spaces. Add…
In this work, we continue the tradition initiated by Geschke, 2011 of viewing the uncountable Borel chromatic number of analytic graphs as cardinal invariants of the continuum. We show that various uncountable Borel chromatic numbers of closed graphs can be consistently different, as well as consistently equal to the continuum. This is done using arguments that are typical to Axiom A forcing notions.
With every $σ$-ideal $I$ on a Polish space we associate the $σ$-ideal $I^*$ generated by the closed sets in $I$. We study the forcing notions of Borel sets modulo the respective $σ$-ideals $I$ and $I^*$ and find connections between their forcing properties. To this end, we associate to a $σ$-ideal on a Polish space an ideal on a countable set and show how forcing properties of the forcing depend on combinatorial properties of the ideal. For $σ$-ideals generated by closed sets we also study the degrees of reals added in the forcing extensions. Among corollaries of our results, we get necessary …
The following will be shown: Let $I$ be a $σ$-ideal on a Polish space $X$ with the property that the associated forcing of $I^+$ Borel subsets ordered by $\subseteq$ is a proper forcing. Let E be an analytic or coanalytic equivalence relation on this Polish space with all equivalence classes Borel. If sharps of certain sets exist, then there is an $I^+$ Borel subset $C$ of $X$ such that $E \upharpoonright C$ is a Borel equivalence relation.
The paper is a naive introduction to descriptive set theory. It is aimed mathematicians without a background in logic. The goal is to provide the basic facts used for applications of descriptive set theory to other areas of mathematics, particularly analysis and dynamical systems. The only topological or set theoretic background required is covered in undergraduate courses. It covers the hierarchy of Borel sets and the analytic sets, trees, Suslin's operation A, reductions, norms, separation theorems and uniformization.
We establish the Borel computability of various C$^*$-algebra invariants, including the Elliott invariant and the Cuntz semigroup. As applications we deduce that AF algebras are classifiable by countable structures, and that a conjecture of Winter and the second author for nuclear separable simple C*-algebras cannot be disproved by appealing to known standard Borel structures on these algebras.
We characterize the completely determined Borel subsets of HYP as exactly the omega_1^{ck} subsets of HYP. As a result, HYP believes there is a Borel well-ordering of the reals, that the Borel Dual Ramsey Theorem fails, and that every Borel d-regular bipartite graph has a Borel perfect matching, among other examples. Therefore, the Borel Dual Ramsey Theorem and several theorems of descriptive combinatorics are not theories of hyperarithmetic analysis. In the case of the Borel Dual Ramsey Theorem, this answers a question of Astor, Dzhafarov, Montalban, Solomon & the third author.
The Steprans forcing notion arises as a quotient of Borel sets modulo the ideal of $σ$-continuity of a certain Borel not $σ$-continuous function. We give a characterization of this forcing in the language of trees and using this characterization we establish such properties of the forcing as fusion and continuous reading of names. Although the latter property is usually implied by the fact that the associated ideal is generated by closed sets, we show it is not the case with Steprans forcing. We also establish a connection between Steprans forcing and Miller forcing thus giving a new descripti…
In this work we study the uncountable Borel chromatic numbers, defined by Geschke (2011) as cardinal characteristics of the continuum, of low complexity graphs. We show that a strong form of locally countable graphs with compact totally disconnected set of vertices have Borel chromatic number bounded by the continuum of the ground model in the model obtained by adding $\aleph_2$ Laver reals. From this, we answer a question from Geschke and the second author (2022), and another question from Fisher, Friedman and Khomskii (2014) concerning regularity properties of subsets of the real line.
Larman showed that any closed subset of the plane with uncountable vertical cross-sections has aleph_1 disjoint Borel uniformizing sets. Here we show that Larman's result is best possible: there exist closed sets with uncountable cross-sections which do not have more than aleph_1 disjoint Borel uniformizations, even if the continuum is much larger than aleph_1. This negatively answers some questions of Mauldin. The proof is based on a result of Stern, stating that certain Borel sets cannot be written as a small union of low-level Borel sets. The proof of the latter result uses Steel's method o…
We define and investigate HC-forcing invariant formulas of set theory, whose interpretations in the hereditarily countable sets are well behaved under forcing extensions. This leads naturally to a notion of cardinality ||Phi|| for sentences Phi of $L_{ω_1,ω}$, which counts the number of sentences of $L_{\infty,ω}$ that, in some forcing extension, become a canonical Scott sentence of a model of Phi. We show this cardinal bounds the complexity of (Mod(Phi), iso), the class of models of Phi with universe omega, by proving that (Mod(Phi),iso) is not Borel reducible to (Mod(Psi),iso) whenever ||Psi…
Twenty years have passed since Kechris' seminal survey paper [A. S. Kechris, New directions in descriptive set theory. Bull. Symbolic Logic, 5(2):161-174, 1999]. As a follow-up of that work, we review some ot the (anti-)classification results that have been obtained in the last decade using Borel reducibility and its generalizations to uncountable cardinals.
We show that if κ is a weakly compact cardinal then the embeddability relation on (generalized) trees of size κ is invariantly universal. This means that for every analytic quasi-order R on the generalized Cantor space 2^κ there is an L_{κ^+ κ}-sentence ϕ such that the embeddability relation on its models of size κ, which are all trees, is Borel bireducible (and, in fact, classwise Borel isomorphic) to R. In particular, this implies that the relation of embeddability on trees of size κ is complete for analytic quasi-orders. These facts generalize analogous results for κ=ω obtained in [LR05, FM…
We investigate regularity properties derived from tree-like forcing notions in the setting of "generalized descriptive set theory", i.e., descriptive set theory on $κ^κ$ and $2^κ$, for regular uncountable cardinals $κ$.
We first consider three well-known chain conditions in the space of marked groups: the minimal condition on centralizers, the maximal condition on subgroups, and the maximal condition on normal subgroups. For each condition, we produce a characterization in terms of well-founded descriptive-set-theoretic trees. Using these characterizations, we demonstrate that the sets given by these conditions are co-analytic and not Borel in the space of marked groups. We then adapt our techniques to show elementary amenable marked groups may be characterized by well-founded descriptive-set-theoretic trees,…
The aim of this short note is to communicate a simple solution to the problem posed in [1] as Question 7.2.7: is it true that for every ccc $σ$-ideal I any I-positive Borel set contains modulo I an I-positive closed set?
Given a space $X$ we investigate the descriptive complexity class $\G_X$ of the set $\FF_0(X)$ of all its closed zero-dimensional subsets, viewed as a subset of the hyperspace $\FF(X)$ of all closed subsets of $X$. We prove that $\max \{ \G_X; \ X \text{ analytic } \}=\pca $ and $\sup \{ \G_X; \ X \text{ Borel } \borm ξ\} \supseteq \Game \bora ξ$ for any countable ordinal $ξ\geq1$. In particular we prove that there exists a one-dimensional Polish subpace of $2^\wo\times \R^2$ for which $\FF_0(X)$ is not in the smallest non trivial pointclass closed under complementation and the Souslin operati…
Let I be a sigma-ideal sigma-generated by a projective collection of closed sets. The forcing with I-positive Borel sets is proper and adds a single real r of an almost minimal degree: if s is a real in V[r] then s is Cohen generic over V or V[s]=V[r].
Following the topic of the book Canonical Ramsey Theory on Polish Spaces by V. Kanovei, M. Sabok and J. Zapletal we study Borel equivalences on Laver trees. Here we prove that equivalence relations Borel reducible to an equivalence relation on $2^ω$ given by some $F_σ$ $P$-ideal on $ω$ can be canonized to the full equivalence relation or to the identity relation. This has several corollaries, e.g. Silver type dichotomy for the Laver ideal and equivalences Borel reducible to equivalence relations given by $F_σ$ $P$-ideals.

We prove that the Borel space of torsion-free Abelian groups with domain $ω$ is Borel complete, i.e., the isomorphism relation on this Borel space is as complicated as possible, as an isomorphism relation. This solves a long-standing open problem in descriptive set theory, which dates back to the seminal paper on Borel reducibility of Friedman and Stanley from 1989.
The aim of these lectures is to give a short introduction to forcing. We will avoid metamathematical issues as much as possible and similarly we will avoid performing the actual construction of forcing. We assume familiarity with basic predicate logic, the axioms of ZF C set theory and constructible sets. We will also make use of tools like the coding of Borel sets and the Shoenfield absoluteness result.
In this article we treat a notion of continuity for a multi-valued function $F$ and we compute the descriptive set-theoretic complexity of the set of all $x$ for which $F$ is continuous at $x$. We give conditions under which the latter set is either a $G_δ$ set or the countable union of $G_δ$ sets. Also we provide a counterexample which shows that the latter result is optimum under the same conditions. Moreover we prove that those conditions are necessary in order to obtain that the set of points of continuity of $F$ is Borel i.e., we show that if we drop some of the previous conditions then t…
For a cardinal lambda<lambda_{omega_1} we give a ccc forcing notion P which forces that for some Borel subset B of the Cantor space (1) there a sequence (eta_alpha:alpha<lambda) of distinct elements such that |(eta_alpha+B) cap (eta_beta+B)|>5 for all alpha, beta<lambda, but (2) there is no perfect set of such eta's. The construction closely follows the one from Shelah math.LO/9802134
The feeling that those two forcing notions-Cohen and Random-(equivalently the corresponding Boolean algebras Borel(R)/(meager sets), Borel(R)/(null sets)) are special, was probably old and widespread. A reasonable interpretation is to show them unique, or ``minimal'' or at least characteristic in a family of ``nice forcing'' like Borel. We shall interpret ``nice'' as Souslin as suggested by Judah Shelah [JdSh 292]. We divide the family of Souslin forcing to two, and expect that: among the first part, i.e. those adding some non-dominated real, Cohen is minimal (=is below every one), while among…
We study some natural sets arising in the theory of ordinary differential equations in one variable from the point of view of descriptive set theory and in particular classify them within the Borel hierarchy. We prove that the set of Cauchy problems for ordinary differential equations which have a unique solution is $Π^0_2$-complete and that the set of Cauchy problems which locally have a unique solution is $Σ^0_3$-complete. We prove that the set of Cauchy problems which have a global solution is $Σ^0_4$-complete and that the set of ordinary differential equation which have a global solution f…
We expand the results of Roslanowski and Shelah arXive:1806.06283 , arXive:1909.00937 to all perfect Abelian Polish groups $(H,+)$. In particular, we show that if $α<ω_1$ and $4\leq k<ω$, then there is a ccc forcing notion adding a $Σ^0_2$ set $B\subseteq H$ which has $\aleph_α$ many pairwise $k$--overlapping translations but not a perfect set of such translations.
We give a descriptive construction of trees for multi-ended graphs, which yields yet another proof of Stallings' theorem on ends of groups. Even though our proof is, in principle, not very different from already existing proofs and it draws ideas from a paper of Krön, it is written in a way that easily adapts to the setting of countable Borel equivalence relations, leading to a free decomposition result and a sufficient condition for treeability.
We consider reducibility of equivalence relations (ERs, for brevity), in a nonstandard domain, in terms of the Borel reducibility and the countably determined (CD, for brevity) reducibility. This reveals phenomena partially analogous to those discovered in descriptive set theory. The Borel reducibility structure of Borel sets and (partially) CD reducibility structure of CD sets in *N is described. We prove that all CD ERs with countable equivalence classes are CD-smooth, but not all are B-smooth, for instance, the ER of having finite difference on *N. Similarly to the Silver dichotomy theorem …
Given an analytic equivalence relation, we tend to wonder whether it is Borel. When it is non Borel, there is always the hope it will be Borel on a "large" set -- nonmeager or of positive measure. That has led Kanovei, Sabok and Zapletal to ask whether every proper $σ$ ideal satisfies the following property: given $E$ an analytic equivalence relation with Borel classes, there exists a set $B$ which is Borel and $I$-positive such that $E\restriction_{B}$ is Borel. We propose a related problem -- does every proper $σ$ ideal satisfy: given $A$ an analytic subset of the plane with Borel sections, …
We isolate a new preservation class of Suslin forcings and prove several associated consistency results in the choiceless theory ZF+DC regarding countable chromatic numbers of various Borel hypergraphs.
We develop a flexible method for showing that Borel witnesses to some combinatorial property of $Δ^1_1$ objects yield $Δ^1_1$ witnesses. We use a modification the Gandy--Harrington forcing method of proving dichotomies, and we can recover the complexity consequences of many known dichotomies with short and simple proofs. Using our methods, we give a simplified proof that smooth $Δ^1_1$ equivalence relations are $Δ^1_1$-reducible to equality; we prove effective versions of the Lusin--Novikov and Feldman--Moore theorems; we prove new effectivization results related to dichotomy theorems due to H…
Let $\mathcal R$ be a $Σ^1_1$ binary relation, and recall that a set $A$ is $\mathcal R$-discrete if no two elements of $A$ are related by $\mathcal R$. We show that in the Sacks and Miller forcing extensions of $L$ there is a $Δ^1_2$ maximal $\mathcal{R}$-discrete set. We use this to answer in the negative the main question posed in \cite{Fischer2010} by showing that in the Sacks and Miller extensions there is a $Π^1_1$ maximal orthogonal family ("mof") of Borel probability measures on Cantor space. By contrast, we show that if there is a Mathias real over $L$ then there are no $Σ^1_2$ mofs.
We systematically develop analogs of basic concepts from classical descriptive set theory in the context of pointless topology. Our starting point is to take the elements of the free complete Boolean algebra generated by the frame $\mathcal{O}(X)$ of opens to be the "$\infty$-Borel sets" in a locale $X$. We show that several known results in locale theory may be interpreted in this framework as direct analogs of classical descriptive set-theoretic facts, including e.g., the Lusin separation, Lusin-Suslin, and Baire category theorems for locales; we also prove several extensions of these result…
