We systematically develop analogs of basic concepts from classical descriptive set theory in the context of pointless topology. Our starting point is to take the elements of the free complete Boolean algebra generated by the frame $\mathcal{O}(X)$ of opens to be the "$\infty$-Borel sets" in a locale $X$. We show that several known results in locale theory may be interpreted in this framework as direct analogs of classical descriptive set-theoretic facts, including e.g., the Lusin separation, Lusin-Suslin, and Baire category theorems for locales; we also prove several extensions of these results. We give a detailed analysis of various notions of image, and prove that a continuous map need not have an $\infty$-Borel image. We introduce the category of "analytic $\infty$-Borel locales" as the regular completion under images of the unary site of locales and $\infty$-Borel maps, and prove analogs of several classical results about analytic sets, such as a boundedness theorem for well-founded analytic relations. We also consider the "positive $\infty$-Borel sets" of a locale, formed from opens without using $\neg$.
We in fact work throughout with $κ$-copresented $κ$-locales and $κ$-Borel sets for arbitrary regular $ω_1 \le κ\le \infty$, thereby incorporating the classical context as the special case $κ= ω_1$. The basis for the aforementioned localic results is a detailed study of various known and new methods for presenting $κ$-frames, $κ$-Boolean algebras, etc. In particular, we introduce a new type of "two-sided posite" for presenting $(κ, κ)$-frames $A$ (i.e., both $A$ and $A^{op}$ are $κ$-frames), and use this to prove a general $κ$-ary interpolation theorem for $(κ, κ)$-frames, which dualizes to the aforementioned separation theorems.
We study the extension of the Kechris-Solecki-Todorcevic dichotomy on analytic graphs to dimensions higher than 2. We prove that the extension is possible in any dimension, finite or infinite. The original proof works in the case of the finite dimension. We first prove that the natural extension does not work in the case of the infinite dimension, for the notion of continuous homomorphism used in the original theorem. Then we solve the problem in the case of the infinite dimension. Finally, we prove that the natural extension works in the case of the infinite dimension, but for the notion of B…
Given an analytic equivalence relation, we tend to wonder whether it is Borel. When it is non Borel, there is always the hope it will be Borel on a "large" set -- nonmeager or of positive measure. That has led Kanovei, Sabok and Zapletal to ask whether every proper $σ$ ideal satisfies the following property: given $E$ an analytic equivalence relation with Borel classes, there exists a set $B$ which is Borel and $I$-positive such that $E\restriction_{B}$ is Borel. We propose a related problem -- does every proper $σ$ ideal satisfy: given $A$ an analytic subset of the plane with Borel sections, …
We study the analytic digraphs of uncountable Borel chromatic number on Polish spaces, and compare them with the notion of injective Borel homomorphism. We provide some minimal digraphs incomparable with G 0. We also prove the existence of antichains of size continuum, and that there is no finite basis. 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification. 03E15, 54H05
The transitive closure of a reflexive, symmetric, analytic relation is an analytic equivalence relation. Does some smaller class contain the transitive closure of every reflexive, symmetric, closed relation? An essentially negative answer is provided here. Every analytic equivalence relation on an arbitrary Polish space is Borel embeddable in the transitive closure of the union of two smooth Borel equivalence relations on that space. In the case of the Baire space, the two smooth relations are closed and the embedding is homeomorphic.
Define z to be the smallest cardinality of a function f:X->Y with X and Y sets of reals such that there is no Borel function g extending f. In this paper we prove that it is relatively consistent with ZFC to have b<z where b is, as usual, smallest cardinality of an unbounded family in w^w. This answers a question raised by Zapletal. We also show that it is relatively consistent with ZFC that there exists a set of reals X such that the Borel order of X is bounded but there exists a relatively analytic subset of X which is not relatively coanalytic. This answers a question of Mauldin.
We modify arguments by Harrington, Marker, and Shelah, 1990, to reprove extensions of two key results in their paper "Borel orderings"in the context of bounding and decomposition of analytic subsets of Borel partial quasi-orderings.

We prove that for a countable discrete group $Γ$ containing a copy of the free group $\F_n$, for some $2\leq n\leq\infty$, as a normal subgroup, the equivalence relations of conjugacy, orbit equivalence and von Neumann equivalence of the ergodic a.e. free actions of $Γ$ are analytic non-Borel equivalence relations in the Polish space of probability measure preserving $Γ$ actions. As a consequence we obtain that the isomorphism relation in the spaces of separably acting factors of type $\II_1$, $\II_\infty$ and $\III_λ$, $0\leqλ\leq 1$, are analytic and not Borel when these spaces are given the…
We provide dichotomy results characterizing when two disjoint analytic binary relations can be separated by a countable union of ${\bfΣ}^0_1 \!\times\! {\bfΣ}^0_ξ$ sets, or by a ${\bfΠ}^0_1 \!\times\! {\bfΠ}^0_ξ$ set.
We prove that in some cases definable chains of Borel partial orderings are necessarily countably cofinal. This includes the following cases: analytic chains, ROD chains in the Solovay model, and $Σ^1_2$ chains in the assumption that $ω_1^{L[x]}<ω_1$ for all reals $x$.
In recent years much attention has been enjoyed by topological spaces which are dominated by second countable spaces. The origin of the concept dates back to the 1979 paper of Talagrand in which it was shown that for a compact space X, Cp(X) is dominated by P, the set of irrationals, if and only if Cp(X) is K-analytic. Cascales extended this result to spaces X which are angelic and finally in 2005 Tkachuk proved that the Talagrand result is true for all Tychnoff spaces X. In recent years, the notion of P-domination has enjoyed attention independent of Cp(X). In particular, Cascales, Orihuela a…
We consider the complexity of special $α$-limit sets, a kind of backward limit set for non-invertible dynamical systems. We show that these sets are always analytic, but not necessarily Borel, even in the case of a surjective map on the unit square. This answers a question posed by Kolyada, Misiurewicz, and Snoha.
We show that the embeddability relations for countable quandles and for countable fields of any given characteristic other than 2 are maximally complex in a strong sense: they are invariantly universal. This notion from the theory of Borel reducibility states that any analytic quasi-order on a standard Borel space essentially appears as the restriction of the embeddability relation to an isomorphism-invariant Borel set. As an intermediate step we show that the embeddability relation of countable quandles is a complete analytic quasi-order.
We prove that if $\leq$ is an analytic partial order then either $\leq$ can be extended to a (boldface) $Δ^1_2$ linear order similar to an antichain in $2^{<ω_1}$ ordered lexicographically or a certain Borel partial order $\leq_0$ embeds in $\leq.$ Some corollaries for analytic equivalence relations are given, for instance, if $E$ is a $Σ^1_1[z]$ equivalence relation such that $E_0$ does not embed in $E$ then $E$ is determined by intersections with E-invariand Borel sets coded in $L[z]$.
We show that several dichotomy theorems concerning the second level of the Borel hierarchy are special cases of the $\aleph_0$-dimensional generalization of the open graph dichotomy, which itself follows from the usual proof(s) of the perfect set theorem. Under the axiom of determinacy, we obtain the generalizations of these results from analytic metric spaces to separable metric spaces. We also consider connections between cardinal invariants and the chromatic numbers of the corresponding dihypergraphs.
We study the complexity with respect to Borel reducibility of the relations of isometry and isometric embeddability between ultrametric Polish spaces for which a set $D$ of possible distances is fixed in advance. These are, respectively, an analytic equivalence relation and an analytic quasi-order and we show that their complexity depends only on the order type of $D$. When $D$ contains a decreasing sequence, isometry is Borel bireducible with countable graph isomorphism and isometric embeddability has maximal complexity among analytic quasi-orders. If $D$ is well-ordered the situation is more…
Jayne and Rogers proved that every function from an analytic space into a separable metric space is decomposable into countably many continuous functions with closed domains if and only if the preimage of each $F_σ$ set under it is again $F_σ$. Many researchers conjectured that the Jayne-Rogers theorem can be generalized to all finite levels of Borel functions. In this paper, by using the Shore-Slaman join theorem on the Turing degrees, we show the following variant of the Jayne-Rogers theorem at finite and transfinite levels of the hierarchy of Borel functions: For all countable ordinals $α$ …
These are lecture notes from a course I gave at the University of Wisconsin during the Spring semester of 1993. Part 1 is concerned with Borel hierarchies. Section 13 contains an unpublished theorem of Fremlin concerning Borel hierarchies and MA. Section 14 and 15 contain new results concerning the lengths of Borel hierarchies in the Cohen and random real model. Part 2 contains standard results on the theory of Analytic sets. Section 25 contains Harrington's Theorem that it is consistent to have $Π^1_2$ sets of arbitrary cardinality. Part 3 has the usual separation theorems. Part 4 gives some …
Louveau and Rosendal [5] have shown that the relation of bi-embeddability for countable graphs as well as for many other natural classes of countable structures is complete under Borel reducibility for analytic equivalence relations. This is in strong contrast to the case of the isomorphism relation, which as an equivalence relation on graphs (or on any class of countable structures consisting of the models of a sentence of L_{ω_1 ω}) is far from complete (see [5, 2]). In this article we strengthen the results of [5] by showing that not only does bi-embeddability give rise to analytic equivale…
We introduce the notion of an invariantly universal pair (S,E) where S is an analytic quasi-order and E \subseteq S is an analytic equivalence relation. This means that for any analytic quasi-order R there is a Borel set B invariant under E such that R is Borel bireducible with the restriction of S to B. We prove a general result giving a sufficient condition for invariant universality, and we demonstrate several applications of this theorem by showing that the phenomenon of invariant universality is widespread. In fact it occurs for a great number of complete analytic quasi-orders, arising in…
The literature provides dichotomies involving homomorphisms (like the G 0 dichotomy) or reductions (like the characterization of sets potentially in a Wadge class of Borel sets, which holds on a subset of a product). However, part of the motivation behind the latter result was to get reductions on the whole product, like in the classical notion of Borel reducibility considered in the study of analytic equivalence relations. This is not possible in general. We show that, under some acyclicity (and also topological) assumptions, this is widely possible. In particular, we prove that, for any non-…
The main question here is the possible generalization of the following theorem on ``simple'' equivalence relation on 2^omega to higher cardinals. Theorem: (1) Assume that: (a) E is a Borel 2-place relation on 2^omega, (b) E is an equivalence relation, (c) if eta, nu in 2^omega and (exists ! n)(eta(n) not= nu(n)), then eta, nu are not E --equivalent. Then there is a perfect subset of 2^omega of pairwise non E-equivalent members. (2) Instead of ``E is Borel'', ``E is analytic (or even a Borel combination of analytic relations)'' is enough. (3) If E is a Pi^1_2 relation which is an equivalence re…
This paper is a continuation of the study of topological properties of omega context free languages (omega-CFL). We proved before that the class of omega-CFL exhausts the hierarchy of Borel sets of finite rank, and that there exist some omega-CFL which are analytic but non Borel sets. We prove here that there exist some omega context free languages which are Borel sets of infinite (but not finite) rank, giving additional answer to questions of Lescow and Thomas [Logical Specifications of Infinite Computations, In:"A Decade of Concurrency", Springer LNCS 803 (1994), 583-621].
We prove that the relation of bisimilarity between countable labelled transition systems is $Σ_1^1$-complete (hence not Borel), by reducing the set of non-wellorders over the natural numbers continuously to it. This has an impact on the theory of probabilistic and nondeterministic processes over uncountable spaces, since logical characterizations of bisimilarity (as, for instance, those based on the unique structure theorem for analytic spaces) require a countable logic whose formulas have measurable semantics. Our reduction shows that such a logic does not exist in the case of image-infinite …
We show that every non-Haar-null analytic subset of $\mathbb{Z}^ω$ contains a non-Haar-null closed subset. Moreover, we also prove that the codes of Haar-null analytic subsets, and, consequently, closed Haar-null sets in the Effros Borel space of $\mathbb{Z}^ω$ form a $\mathbfΔ^1_2$ set.
We study the Borel subsets of the plane that can be made closed by refining the Polish topology on the real line. These sets are called potentially closed. We first compare Borel subsets of the plane using products of continuous functions. We show the existence of a perfect antichain made of minimal sets among non-potentially closed sets. We apply this result to graphs, quasi-orders and partial orders. We also give a non-potentially closed set minimum for another notion of comparison. Finally, we show that we cannot have injectivity in the Kechris-Solecki-Todorcevic dichotomy about analytic gr…
Let $X$ be a zero-dimensional compact metrizable space endowed with a strictly positive continuous Borel $σ$-additive measure $μ$ which is good in the sense that for any clopen subsets $U,V\subset X$ with $μ(U)<μ(V)$ there is a clopen set $W\subset V$ with $μ(W)=μ(U)$. We study $σ$-ideals with Borel base on $X$ which are invariant under the action of the group $H_μ(X)$ of measure-preserving homeomorphisms of $(X,μ)$, and show that any such $σ$-ideal $\mathcal I$ is equal to one of seven $σ$-ideals: $\{\emptyset\}$, $[X]^{\leω}$, $\mathcal E$, $\mathcal M\cap\mathcal N$, $\mathcal M$, $\mathcal…
We prove a canonization result for the Carlson-Simpson forcing in the spirit of \cite{KSZ}. We generalize the weak form of the Carlson-Simpson theorem (\cite{CaSi}) dealing with partitions without free blocks: instead of dealing with finite Borel (resp. Baire-property) colorings we deal with (uncountable) colorings such that the corresponding equivalence relation (two partitions are equivalent if they are colored by the same color) is analytic.
We prove that it is not possible to classify separable von Neumann factors of types $\II_1$, $\II_\infty$ or $\III_λ$, $0\leq λ\leq1$, up to isomorphism by a Borel measurable assignment of "countable structures" as invariants. In particular the isomorphism relation of type $\II_1$ factors is not smooth. We also prove that the isomorphism relation for von Neumann $\II_1$ factors is analytic, but is not Borel.
Weyl-von Neumann Theorem asserts that two bounded self-adjoint operators $A,B$ on a Hilbert space $H$ are unitarily equivalent modulo compacts, i.e., $uAu^*+K=B$ for some unitary $u\in \mathcal{U}(H)$ and compact self-adjoint operator $K$, if and only if $A$ and $B$ have the same essential spectra: $σ_{\rm{ess}}(A)=σ_{\rm{ess}}(B)$. In this paper we consider to what extent the above Weyl-von Neumann's result can(not) be extended to unbounded operators using descriptive set theory. We show that if $H$ is separable infinite-dimensional, this equivalence relation for bounded self-adjoin operators…
