Certain second-order partial differential operators, which are expressed as sums of squares of real-analytic vector fields in $\Bbb R^3$ and which are well known to be $C^\infty$ hypoelliptic, fail to be analytic hypoelliptic.
The global and semi-global analytic hypoellipticity on the torus is proved for two classes of sums of squares operators, introduced in "Analytic Hypoellipticity for Sums of Squares and the Treves Conjecture" by P. Albano and A. Bove and M. Mughetti, and in "Analytic Hypoellipticity for Sums of Squares and the Treves Conjecture. II" by A. Bove and M. Mughetti, satisfying the Hörmander condition and which fail to be neither locally nor microlocally analytic hypoelliptic.
We consider sums of squares operators globally defined on the torus. We show that if some assumptions are satisfied the operators are globally analytic hypoelliptic. The purpose of the assumptions is to rule out the existence of a Hamilton leaf on the characteristic variety lying along the fiber of the cotangent bundle, i.e. the case of the (global) Métivier operator.
We prove a couple of results concerning pseudodifferential perturbations of differential operators being sums of squares of vector fields and satisfying Hörmander's condition. The first is on the minimal Gevrey regularity: if a sum of squares with analytic coefficients is perturbed with a pseudodifferential operator of order strictly less than its subelliptic index it still has the Gevrey minimal regularity. We also prove a statement concerning real analytic hypoellipticity for the same type of pseudodifferential perturbations, provided the operator satisfies to some extra conditions (see Theo…
We are concerned with the problem of real analytic regularity of the solutions of sums of squares with real analytic coefficients. Treves conjecture states that an operator of this type is analytic hypoelliptic if and only if all the strata in the Poisson-Treves stratification are symplectic. We produce a model operator, $ P_{1} $, having a single symplectic stratum and prove that it is Gevrey $ s_{0} $ hypoelliptic and not better. See Theorem \ref{th:1} for a definition of $ s_{0} $. We also show that this phenomenon has a microlocal character. We point out explicitly that this is a counterex…
We consider an operator $ P $ which is a sum of squares of vector fields with analytic coefficients. The operator has a non-symplectic characteristic manifold, but the rank of the symplectic form $ σ$ is not constant on $ \Char P $. Moreover the Hamilton foliation of the non symplectic stratum of the Poisson-Treves stratification for $ P $ consists of closed curves in a ring-shaped open set around the origin. We prove that then $ P $ is analytic hypoelliptic on that open set. And we note explicitly that the local Gevrey hypoellipticity for $ P $ is $ G^{k+1} $ and that this is sharp.
We attach representations to non-symplectic stratum in the characteristic set of real vector fields. This leads to Schrodinger operators. The analysis of the solutions of these Schrodinger equations allows us to construct smooth, non-analytic solutions of the sub-elliptic operator formed by taking sums of squares of the real vector fields.
A global real analytic regularity theorem for a quasilinear sum of squares of vector fields of Hormander rank 2 is given. A related local result for a special case was proved recently by the second author and L. Zanghirati in a paper titled "Local Real Analyticity of Solutions for sums of squares of non-linear vector fields".
The recent example of Hanges: $P = \partial_t^2 + t^2Δ_x + \partial^2_{θ(x)}$ in $R^3$ is analytic hypoelliptic in the sense of germs but not in the strong sense in any neighborhood of the origin. And its characteristic variety is non-symplectic. We give a purely $L^2,$ and hence quite flexible, proof of this result and generalizations, and link it to, and contrast it with, the celebrated Baouendi-Goulaouic operator. We point out that the results are consistent with the conjecture of Treves.
For each value of k, two complex vector fields satisfying the bracket condition are exhibited the sum of whose squares is hypoelliptic but not subelliptic - in fact the operator loses k-1 derivatives in Sobolev norms. In the Appendix it is proven that this operator is analytic hypoelliptic.
We consider a second order operator with analytic coefficients whose principal symbol vanishes exactly to order two on a symplectic real analytic manifold. We assume that the first (non degenerate) eigenvalue vanishes on a symplectic submanifold of the characteristic manifold. In the $C^\infty$ framework this situation would mean a loss of 3/2 derivatives. We prove that this operator is analytic hypoelliptic. The main tool is the FBI transform. A case in which $C^\infty$ hypoellipticity fails is also discussed.
On $T \times G$, where $T$ is a compact real-analytic manifold and $G$ is a compact Lie group, we consider differential operators $P$ which are invariant by left translations on $G$ and are elliptic in $T$. Under a mild technical condition, we prove that global hypoellipticity of $P$ implies its global analytic-hypoellipticity (actually Gevrey of any order $s \geq 1$). We also study the connection between the latter property and the notion of global analytic (resp. Gevrey) solvability, but in a much more general setup.
We show that all smooth solutions of model non-linear sums of squares of vector fields are locally real analytic. A global result for more general operators is presented in a paper by Makhlouf Derridj and the first author under the title "Global Analytic Hypoellipticity for a Class of Quasilinear Sums of Squares of Vector Fields".
We study a class of sum of squares exhibiting the same Poisson-Treves stratification as the Oleinik-Radkevič operator. We find three types of operators having distinct microlocal structures. For one of these we prove a Gevrey hypoellipticity theorem analogous to our recent result for the corresponding Oleinik-Radkevič operator.
We simplify and give an alternative proof of hypoellipticity for generalizations of the singular sum of squares of complex vector fields studied by Kohn, with an appendix by Derridj and Tartakoff, in the Annals of Mathematics, vol. 162 no. 2, 2005, pp. 943-986. The main generalization is that the complex vector fields now come from domains of finite type. We also prove real analytic hypoellipticity and the optimality of our estimates.
We give a semiclassical analysis of a nonlinear eigenvalue problem arising from the study of the failure of analytic hypoellipticity and obtain a general family of hypoelliptic, but not analytic hypoelliptic operators.
In an interesting note, E.M. Stein observed some 20 years ago that while the Kohn Laplacian $\square_b$ on functions is neither locally solvable nor (analytic) hypoelliptic, the addition of a non-zero complex constant reversed these conclusions at least on the Heisenberg group, and Kwon reproved and generalized this result using the method of concatenations. Recently Hanges and Cordaro have studied this situation on the Heisenberg group in detail. Here we give a purely $L^2$ proof of Stein's result using the author's now classical construction of $(T^p)_ϕ= ϕT^p +...,$ where $T$ is the 'missing…
We consider Keldysh-type operators, $ P = x_1 D_{x_1}^2 + a (x) D_{x_1} + Q (x, D_{x'} ) $, $ x = ( x_1, x') $ with analytic coefficients, and with $ Q ( x, D_{x'} ) $ second order, principally real and elliptic in $ D_{x'} $ for $ x $ near zero. We show that if $ P u =f $, $ u \in C^\infty $, and $ f $ is analytic in a neighbourhood of $ 0 $ then $ u $ is analytic in a neighbourhood of $ 0 $. This is a consequence of a microlocal result valid for operators of any order with Lagrangian radial sets. Our result proves a generalized version of a conjecture made by the second author and Lebeau and…
In this paper we consider a class of hypoelliptic second-order partial differential operators $\mathcal{L}$ in divergence form on $\mathbb{R}^N$, arising from CR geometry and Lie group theory, and we prove the Strong and Weak Maximum Principles and the Harnack Inequality for $\mathcal{L}$. The involved operators are not assumed to belong to the Hörmander hypoellipticity class, nor to satisfy subelliptic estimates, nor Muckenhoupt-type estimates on the degeneracy of the second order part; indeed our results hold true in the infinitely-degenerate case and for operators which are not necessarily …
In this paper we prove local analytic hypoellipticity for a degenerate sum of squares of complex vector fields generalizing those of Kohn in "Hypoellipticity and Loss of Derivatives". Kohn's article is to appear in the Annals of Mathematics with an appendix by Derridj and Tartakoff proving local analyticity in that case. Here we consider vector fields corresponding to a CR manifold of finite type so there is a kind of double degeneracy, and prove local analyticity using our balanced localization of high derivatives in the "missing" direction T. In a forthcoming paper, Bove, Derridj, Kohn and T…
Explicit representations of densities for linear parabolic partial differential equations are useful in order to design computation schemes of high accuracy for a considerable class of diffusion models. Approximations of lower order based on the WKB-expansion have been used in order to compute Greeks in standard models of the interest rate market (cf. [2]). However, it turns out that for higher order approximations another related expansion leads to more accurate schemes. We compute a local explicit formula for a class of parabolic problems and determine a lower bound of the time horizon where…
Motivated by the problems of analytic hypoellipticity, we show that a special family of compact non self-adjoint operators has a non-zero eigenvalue. We recover old results by Christ,Hanges, Himonas, Pham-The-Lai and Robert proved by using ordinary differential equations. We show our method applies to higher dimensional cases, giving in particular a new class of hypoelliptic but not analytic hypoelliptic operators.
This note is a comment on a recent paper by J. J. Kohn. We give an example of a second order partial differential operator, expressed as a sum of squares of complex vector fields satisfying the bracket condition, that is not hypoelliptic.
For $ q $, $ a $ integers such that $ a \geq 1 $, $ 1 < q $, $ (x, y) \in U $, $ U $ a neighborhood of the origin in $ \mathbb{R}^{2} $, we consider the operator $$ D_{x}^{2} + x^{2(q-1)} D_{y}^{2} + y^{2a} D_{y}^{2} . $$ Slightly modifying the method of proof of \cite{monom} we can see that it is Gevrey $ s_{0} $ hypoelliptic, where $ s_{0}^{-1} = 1 - a^{-1} (q - 1) q^{-1} $. Here we show that this value is optimal, i.e. that there are solutions to $ P u = f $ with $ f $ more regular than $ G^{s_{0}} $ that are not better than Gevrey $ s_{0} $. The above operator reduces to the Métivier opera…
For about twenty five years it was a kind of folk theorem that complex vector-fields defined on $Ω\times \mathbb R_t$ (with $Ω$ open set in $\mathbb R^n$) by $$ L_j = \frac{\partial}{\partial t_j} + i \frac {\partial ϕ}{\partial t_j}(\t) \frac{\partial}{\partial x}, j=1,..., n, \t\in Ω, x\in \mathbb R ,$$ with $ϕ$ analytic, were subelliptic as soon as they were hypoelliptic. This was the case when $n=1$ but in the case $n>1$, an inaccurate reading of the proof given by Maire (see also Trèves) of the hypoellipticity of such systems, under the condition that $ϕ$ does not admit any local maximum …
This note contains a representation formula for positive solutions of linear degenerate second-order equations of the form $$ \partial_t u (x,t) = \sum_{j=1}^m X_j^2 u(x,t) + X_0 u(x,t) \qquad (x,t) \in \mathbb{R}^N \times\, ]- \infty ,T[,$$ proved by a functional analytic approach based on Choquet theory. As a consequence, we obtain Liouville-type theorems and uniqueness results for the positive Cauchy problem.
This article is concerned with quantitative unique continuation estimates for equations involving a "sum of squares" operator $\mathcal{L}$ on a compact manifold $\mathcal{M}$ assuming: $(i)$ the Chow-Rashevski-Hörmander condition ensuring the hypoellipticity of $\mathcal{L}$, and $(ii)$ the analyticity of $\mathcal{M}$ and the coefficients of $\mathcal{L}$. The first result is the tunneling estimate $\|φ\|_{L^2(ω)} \geq Ce^{- λ^{\frac{k}{2}}}$ for normalized eigenfunctions $φ$ of $\mathcal{L}$ from a nonempty open set $ω\subset \mathcal{M}$, where $k$ is the hypoellipticity index of $\mathcal…
The overall goal of this dissertation is to investigate certain classical results from harmonic analysis, replacing the Euclidean setting, the abelian structure and the elliptic Laplace operator with a non-commutative environment and hypoelliptic operators. More specifically, we consider wave equations for hypoelliptic homogeneous left-invariant operators on graded Lie groups with time-dependent non-negative propagation speeds that are Hölder-regular or even more so. The corresponding Euclidean problem has been extensively studied in the `80s and some additional results have been recently obta…
I will give a discussion of the conditions involved in Treves' conjecture on analytic hypoellipticity. I will discuss some microlocally characteristic sets and introduce a topology of monotropic functionals as suitable for solving the conjecture. The pseudodifferential operator representation is inspired by Cousin.
We study the regularity of Gevrey vectors for Hörmander operators $$ P = \sum_{j=1}^m X_j^2 + X_0 + c$$ where the $X_j$ are real vector fields and $c(x)$ is a smooth function, all in Gevrey class $G^{s}.$ The principal hypothesis is that $P$ satisfies the subelliptic estimate: for some $\varepsilon >0, \; \exists \,C$ such that $$\|v\|_\varepsilon^2 \leq C\left(|(Pv, v)| + \|v\|_0^2\right) \qquad \forall v\in C_0^\infty.$$ We prove directly (without the now familiar use of adding a variable $t$ and proving suitable hypoellipticity for $Q=-D_t^2-P$ and then, using the hypothesis on the iterates…
We prove via FBI-transform a result concerning the microlocal Gevrey regularity of analytic vectors for operators sums of squares of vector fields with real-valued real analytic coefficients of Hörmander type, thus providing a microlocal version, in the analytic category, of a result due to M. Derridj in "Local estimates for Hörmander's operators of first kind with analytic Gevrey coefficients and application to the regularity of their Gevrey vectors", concerning the problem of the local regularity for the Gevrey vectors for sums of squares of vector fields with real-valued real analytic/Gevre…
We introduce a new approach for the study of the Problem of Iterates using the theory on general ultradifferentiable structures developed in the last years. Our framework generalizes many of the previous settings including the Gevrey case and enables us, for the first time, to prove non-analytic Theorems of Iterates for non-elliptic differential operators. In particular, by generalizing a Theorem of Baouendi and Metivier we obtain the Theorem of Iterates for hypoelliptic analytic operators of principal type with respect to several non-analytic ultradifferentiable structures.
The micro-local Gevrey regularity of a class of "sums of squares" with real analytic coefficients is studied in detail. Some partial regularity result is also given.
We prove an extension of Hoermander's classical result on hypoelliptic second order equations, where the coefficients of the related vector fields are globally Lipschitz and satisfy the classical Hoermander condition on a dense set while the density still exists in a classical sense. Furthermore, Hoermander's classical result and related density estimates based on Malliavin calculus are recovered from an analytical point of view.
We investigate the analytic structure of solutions of non-relativistic Schr"odinger equations describing Coulombic many-particle systems. We prove the following: Let psi(x) with x=(x_1,...,x_N) in R^{3N} denote an N-electron wavefunction of such a system with one nucleus fixed at the origin. Then in a neighbourhood of a coalescence point, for which x_1=0 and the other electron coordinates do not coincide, and differ from 0, psi can be represented locally as psi(x) = psi^(1)(x) + |x_1|psi^(2)(x) with psi^(1), psi^(2) real analytic. A similar representation holds near two-electron coalescence po…
