Using various results from extremal set theory (interpreted in the language of additive combinatorics), we prove an asyptotically sharp version of Freiman's theorem in F_2^n: if A in F_2^n is a set for which |A + A| <= K|A| then A is contained in a subspace of size 2^{2K + O(\sqrt{K}\log K)}|A|; except for the O(\sqrt{K} \log K) error, this is best possible. If in addition we assume that A is a downset, then we can also cover A by O(K^{46}) translates of a coordinate subspace of size at most |A|, thereby verifying the so-called polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa conjecture in this case. A common theme in the arguments is the use of compression techniques. These have long been familiar in extremal set theory, but have been used only rarely in the additive combinatorics literature.
A famous result of Freiman describes the structure of finite sets A of integers with small doubling property. If |A + A| <= K|A| then A is contained within a multidimensional arithmetic progression of dimension d(K) and size f(K)|A|. Here we prove an analogous statement valid for subsets of an arbitrary abelian group.
We prove a robust version of Freiman's $3k - 4$ theorem on the restricted sumset $A+_ΓB$, which applies when the doubling constant is at most $\tfrac{3+\sqrt{5}}{2}$ in general and at most $3$ in the special case when $A = -B$. As applications, we derive robust results with other types of assumptions on popular sums, and structure theorems for sets satisfying almost equalities in discrete and continuous versions of the Riesz-Sobolev inequality.
We show that if A is a subset of F_2^n and |A+A| < K|A| then A is contained in a subspace of size at most 2^{O(K^{3/2}log K)}|A|. This improves on the previous best of 2^{O(K^2)}.
We note a link between combinatorial results of Bollobás and Leader concerning sumsets in the grid, the Brunn-Minkowski theorem and a result of Freiman and Bilu concerning the structure of sets of integers with small doubling. Our main result is the following. If eps > 0 and if A is a finite nonempty subset of a torsion-free abelian group with |A + A| <= K|A|, then A may be covered by exp(K^C) progressions of dimension [log_2 K + eps] and size at most |A|.
Freiman's 2.4-Theorem states that any set $A \subset \mathbb{Z}_p$ satisfying $|2A| \leq 2.4|A| - 3 $ and $|A| < p/35$ can be covered by an arithmetic progression of length at most $|2A| - |A| + 1$. A more general result of Green and Ruzsa implies that this covering property holds for any set satisfying $|2A| \leq 3|A| - 4$ as long as the rather strong density requirement $|A| < p/10^{215}$ is satisfied. We present a version of this statement that allows for sets satisfying $|2A| \leq 2.48|A| - 7$ with the more modest density requirement of $|A| < p/10^{10}$.
We discuss a multiplicative counterpart of Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem in the context of a function field $F$ over an algebraically closed field $K$. Such a theorem would give a precise description of subspaces $S$, such that the space $S^2$ spanned by products of elements of $S$ satisfies $\dim S^2 \leq 3 \dim S-4$. We make a step in this direction by giving a complete characterisation of spaces $S$ such that $\dim S^2 = 2 \dim S$. We show that, up to multiplication by a constant field element, such a space $S$ is included in a function field of genus $0$ or $1$. In particular if the genus is $1…
We obtain quantitative versions of the Balog-Szemeredi-Gowers and Freiman theorems in the model case of a finite field geometry F_2^n, improving the previously known bounds in such theorems. For instance, if A is a subset of F_2^n such that |A+A| <= K|A| (thus A has small additive doubling), we show that there exists an affine subspace V of F_2^n of cardinality |V| >> K^{-O(\sqrt{K})} |A| such that |A \cap V| >> |V|/2K. Under the assumption that A contains at least |A|^3/K quadruples with a_1 + a_2 + a_3 + a_4 = 0 we obtain a similar result, albeit with the slightly weaker condition |V| >> K^{…
The study of `structure' on subsets of abelian groups, with small `doubling constant', has been well studied in the last fifty years, from the time Freiman initiated the subject. In \cite{DF} Deshouillers and Freiman establish a structure theorem for subsets of $\n$ with small doubling constant. In the current article we provide an alternate proof of one of the main theorem of \cite{DF}. Also our proof leads to slight improvement of the theorems in \cite{DF}.
One of the many theorems Freiman proved, in the second half of the twentieth century, in the subject which later came to be known as "structure theory of set addition", was 'Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem' for subsets of $\Z$. In this article we introduce concept of a new `structure' on finite subsets of integers. Sets with this structure are quite useful in additive number theory in some contexts. Also we give some criterion for subsets to posses this structure. Then this is used to establish an analog of Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem for the groups $\Z \times G,$ where $G$ is any abelian group.
We show that if A is a large subset of a box in Z^d with dimensions L_1 >= L_2 >= ... >= L_d which are all reasonably large, then |A + A| > 2^{d/48}|A|. By combining this with Chang's quantitative version of Freiman's theorem, we prove a structural result about sets with small sumset. If A is a set of integers with |A + A| <= K|A|, then there is a progression P of dimension d << log K such that |A \cap P| >= \exp(-K^C)max (|A|, |P|). This is closely related to a theorem of Freiman and Bilu, but is quantitatively stronger in certain aspects. [Added Oct 14th: I have temporarily withdrawn this pa…
We generalize a result of Tao which extends Freiman's theorem to the Heisenberg group. We extend it to simply connected nilpotent Lie groups of arbitrary step.
A non-quantitative version of the Freiman-Ruzsa theorem is obtained for finite stable sets with small tripling in arbitrary groups, as well as for (finite) weakly normal subsets in abelian groups.
We show that if $A$ is a finite $K$-approximate subgroup of an $s$-step nilpotent group then there is a finite normal subgroup $H\subset A^{K^{O_s(1)}}$ modulo which $A^{O_s(\log^{O_s(1)}K)}$ contains a nilprogression of rank at most $O_s(\log^{O_s(1)}K)$ and size at least $\exp(-O_s(\log^{O_s(1)}K))|A|$. This partially generalises the close-to-optimal bounds obtained in the abelian case by Sanders, and improves the bounds and simplifies the exposition of an earlier result of the author. Combined with results of Breuillard-Green, Breuillard-Green-Tao, Gill-Helfgott-Pyber-Szabó, and the author,…
In its usual form, Freiman's 3k-4 theorem states that if A and B are subsets of the integers of size k with small sumset (of size close to 2k) then they are very close to arithmetic progressions. Our aim in this paper is to strengthen this by allowing only a bounded number of possible summands from one of the sets. We show that if A and B are subsets of the integers of size k such that for any four-element subset X of B the sumset A+X has size not much more than 2k then already this implies that A and B are very close to arithmetic progressions.
Let G be a finite abelian group of torsion r and let A be a subset of G. The Freiman--Ruzsa theorem asserts that if |A+A| < K|A| then A is contained in a coset of a subgroup of G of size at most r^{K^4}K^2|A|. It was conjectured by Ruzsa that the subgroup size can be reduced to r^{CK}|A| for some absolute constant C >= 2. This conjecture was verified for r = 2 in a sequence of recent works, which have, in fact, yielded a tight bound. In this work, we establish the same conjecture for any prime torsion.
We prove a Freiman-Ruzsa-type theorem valid in an arbitrary nilpotent group. Specifically, we show that a K-approximate subgroup A of an s-step nilpotent group G is contained in a coset nilprogression of rank at most f(K) and cardinality at most exp(g(K))|A|, with f and g polynomials depending only on the step s of G. To motivate this, we give a direct proof of Breuillard and Green's analogous result for torsion-free nilpotent groups, avoiding the use of Mal'cev's embedding theorem.

We show that a finite set of integers $A \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ with $|A+A| \le K |A|$ contains a large piece $X \subseteq A$ with Freĭman dimension $O(\log K)$, where large means $|A|/|X| \ll \exp(O(\log^2 K))$. This can be thought of as a major quantitative improvement on Freĭman's dimension lemma, or as a "weak" Freĭman--Ruzsa theorem with almost polynomial bounds. The methods used, centered around an "additive energy increment strategy", differ from the usual tools in this area and may have further potential. Most of our argument takes place over $\mathbb{F}_2^n$, which is itself curious. T…
Freiman's theorem asserts, roughly speaking, if that a finite set in a torsion-free abelian group has small doubling, then it can be efficiently contained in (or controlled by) a generalised arithmetic progression. This was generalised by Green and Ruzsa to arbitrary abelian groups, where the controlling object is now a coset progression. We extend these results further to solvable groups of bounded derived length, in which the coset progressions are replaced by the more complicated notion of a "coset nilprogression". As one consequence of this result, any subset of such a solvable group of sm…
We study the extent to which sets A in Z/NZ, N prime, resemble sets of integers from the additive point of view (``up to Freiman isomorphism''). We give a direct proof of a result of Freiman, namely that if |A + A| < K|A| and |A| < c(K)N then A is Freiman isomorphic to a set of integers. Because we avoid appealing to Freiman's structure theorem, we get a reasonable bound: we can take c(K) > exp(-cK^2 log K). As a byproduct of our argument we obtain a sharpening of the second author's result on sets with small sumset in torsion groups. For example if A is a subset of F_2^n, and if |A + A| < K|A…
Let $G_1, \dots, G_k$ and $H$ be vector spaces over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$ of prime order. Let $A \subset G_1 \times\dots\times G_k$ be a set of size $δ|G_1| \cdots |G_k|$. Let a map $ϕ\colon A \to H$ be a multi-homomorphism, meaning that for each direction $d \in [k]$, and each element $(x_1, \dots, x_{d-1}, x_{d+1}, \dots, x_k)$ of $G_1\times\dots\times G_{d-1}\times G_{d+1}\times \dots\times G_k$, the map that sends each $y_d$ such that $(x_1, \dots,$ $x_{d-1},$ $y_d,$ $x_{d+1}, \dots,$ $x_k) \in A$ to $ϕ(x_1, \dots,$ $x_{d-1},$ $y_d,$ $x_{d+1}, \dots,$ $x_k)$ is a Freiman homomorphi…
For $δ>0$ sufficiently small and $A\subset \mathbb{Z}^k$ with $|A+A|\le (2^k+δ)|A|$, we show either $A$ is covered by $m_k(δ)$ parallel hyperplanes, or satisfies $|\widehat{\operatorname{co}}(A)\setminus A|\le c_kδ|A|$, where $\widehat{\operatorname{co}}(A)$ is the smallest convex progression (convex set intersected with a sublattice) containing $A$. This generalizes the Freiman-Bilu $2^k$ theorem, Freiman's $3|A|-4$ theorem, and recent sharp stability results of the present authors for sumsets in $\mathbb{R}^k$ conjectured by Figalli and Jerison.
The well--known Freiman--Ruzsa Theorem provides a structural description of a set $A$ of integers with $|2A|\le c|A|$ as a subset of a $d$--dimensional arithmetic progression $P$ with $|P|\le c'|A|$, where $d$ and $c'$ depend only on $c$. The estimation of the constants $d$ and $c'$ involved in the statement has been the object of intense research. Freiman conjectured in 2008 a formula for the largest volume of such a set. In this paper we prove the conjecture for a general class of sets called chains.
Recently, G. A. Freiman, M. Herzog, P. Longobardi, M. Maj proved two `structure theorems' for ordered groups \cite{FHLM}. We give elementary proof of these two theorems.
A conjecture of Freiman gives an exact formula for the largest volume of a finite set $A$ of integers with given cardinality $k = |A|$ and doubling $T = |2A|$. The formula is known to hold when $T \le 3k-4$, for some small range over $3k-4$ and for families of structured sets called chains. In this paper we extend the formula to sets of every dimension and prove it for sets composed of three segments, giving structural results for the extremal case. A weaker extension to sets composed of a bounded number of segments is also discussed.
We develop a version of Freiman's theorem for a class of non-abelian groups, which includes finite nilpotent, supersolvable and solvable A-groups. To do this we have to replace the small doubling hypothesis with a stronger relative polynomial growth hypothesis akin to that in Gromov's theorem (although with an effective range), and the structures we find are balls in (left and right) translation invariant pseudo-metrics with certain well behaved growth estimates. Our work complements three other recent approaches to developing non-abelian versions of Freiman's theorem by Breuillard and Green, …
We discuss a structural approach to subset-sum problems in additive combinatorics. The core of this approach are Freiman-type structural theorems, many of which will be presented through the paper. These results have applications in various areas, such as number theory, combinatorics and mathematical physics.
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group of exponent $n$ and let $A$ be a non-empty subset of $[1,n-1]$. The Davenport constant of $G$ with weight $A$, denoted by $D_A(G)$, is defined to be the least positive integer $\ell$ such that any sequence over $G$ of length $\ell$ has a non-empty $A$-weighted zero-sum subsequence. Similarly, the combinatorial invariant $E_{A}(G)$ is defined to be the least positive integer $\ell$ such that any sequence over $G$ of length $\ell$ has an $A$-weighted zero-sum subsequence of length $|G|$. In this article, we determine the exact value of $D_A(\mathbb{Z}_n)$, for s…
Combining Freiman's theorem with Balog-Szemeredi-Gowers theorem one can show that if an additive set has large additive energy, then a large piece of the set is contained in a generalized arithmetic progression of small rank and size. In this paper, we prove the above statement with the optimal bound for the rank of the progression. The proof strategy involves studying upper bounds for additive energy of subsets of R^d and Z^d.
We generalize several classical theorems in extremal combinatorics by replacing a global constraint with an inequality which holds for all objects in a given class. In particular we obtain generalizations of Turán's theorem, the Erdős-Gallai theorem, the LYM-inequality, the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem and the Erdős-Szekeres theorem on sequences.
An identifying code of a (di)graph $G$ is a dominating subset $C$ of the vertices of $G$ such that all distinct vertices of $G$ have distinct (in)neighbourhoods within $C$. In this paper, we classify all finite digraphs which only admit their whole vertex set in any identifying code. We also classify all such infinite oriented graphs. Furthermore, by relating this concept to a well known theorem of A. Bondy on set systems we classify the extremal cases for this theorem.
The purpose of this note is to prove the existence of a remarkable structure in an iterated sumset derived from a set $P$ in a Cartesian square $\mathbb{F}_p^n\times\mathbb{F}_p^n$. More precisely, we perform horizontal and vertical sums and differences on $P$, that is, operations on the second coordinate when the first one is fixed, or vice versa. The structure we find is the zero set of a family of bilinear forms on a Cartesian product of vector subspaces. The codimensions of the subspaces and the number of bilinear forms involved are bounded by a function $c(δ)$ of the density $δ=\lvert P\r…
One of possible interpretations of the well-known König--Hall--Egerváry theorem is a full characterization of all bipartite graphs extremal for fractional matchings of a given weight (or, equivalently, a characterization of $(0,1)$-matrices extremal for partial fractional diagonals of a given length). In this paper we initiate the study of $d$-partite $d$-uniform hypergraphs that are extremal for fractional perfect matchings (or, equivalently, $d$-dimensional $(0,1)$-matrices that are extremal for polydiagonals). For this purpose, we analyze similarities and differences between $2$-dimensional…
This paper is devoted to present two counterexamples to the theorem from \cite{MK} Maria R., Katherine T. M., Bernardo S. M., Extremal graphs with bounded vertex bipartiteness number, Linear Algebra Appl. 493 (2016) 28-36. Moreover, the corrected theorem and proof are presented.
The main purpose of this paper is to study extremal results on the intersection graphs of boxes in $\R^d$. We calculate exactly the maximal number of intersecting pairs in a family $\F$ of $n$ boxes in $\R^d$ with the property that no $k+1$ boxes in $\F$ have a point in common. This allows us to improve the known bounds for the fractional Helly theorem for boxes. We also use the Fox-Gromov-Lafforgue-Naor-Pach results to derive a fractional Erdős-Stone theorem for semi-algebraic graphs in order to obtain a second proof of the fractional Helly theorem for boxes.
The hypercube Q_n is the graph whose vertex set is {0,1}^n and where two vertices are adjacent if they differ in exactly one coordinate. For any subgraph H of the cube, let ex(Q_n, H) be the maximum number of edges in a subgraph of Q_n which does not contain a copy of H. We find a wide class of subgraphs H, including all previously known examples, for which ex(Q_n, H) = o(e(Q_n)). In particular, our method gives a unified approach to proving that ex(Q_n, C_{2t}) = o(e(Q_n)) for all t >= 4 other than 5.
A central result in extremal set theory is the celebrated theorem of Sperner from 1928, which gives the size of the largest family of subsets of [n] not containing a 2-chain. Erdos extended this theorem to determine the largest family without a k-chain. Erdos and Katona, followed by Kleitman, asked how many chains must appear in families with sizes larger than the corresponding extremal bounds. In 1966, Kleitman resolved this question for 2-chains, showing that the number of such chains is minimized by taking sets as close to the middle level as possible. Moreover, he conjectured the extremal …
For every positive integer $t$ we construct a finite family of triple systems ${\mathcal M}_t$, determine its Turán number, and show that there are $t$ extremal ${\mathcal M}_t$-free configurations that are far from each other in edit-distance. We also prove a strong stability theorem: every ${\mathcal M}_t$-free triple system whose size is close to the maximum size is a subgraph of one of these $t$ extremal configurations after removing a small proportion of vertices. This is the first stability theorem for a hypergraph problem with an arbitrary (finite) number of extremal configurations. Mor…
In this paper we consider a natural extremal graph theoretic problem of topological sort, concerning the minimization of the (topological) connectedness of the independence complex of graphs in terms of its dimension. We observe that the lower bound $\frac{\dim(\mathcal{I}(G))}{2} - 2$ on the connectedness of the independence complex $\mathcal{I}(G)$ of line graphs of bipartite graphs $G$ is tight. In our main theorem we characterize the extremal examples. Our proof of this characterization is based on topological machinery. Our motivation for studying this problem comes from a classical conje…
Both the Simonovits stability theorem and the Nikiforov spectral stability theorem are powerful tools for solving exact values of Turán numbers in extremal graph theory. Recently, Füredi [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 115 (2015)] provided a concise and contemporary proof of the Simonovits stability theorem. In this note, we present a unified treatment for some extremal graph problems, including short proofs of Nikiforov's spectral stability theorem and the clique stability theorem proved recently by Ma and Qiu [European J. Combin. 84 (2020)]. Moreover, some spectral extremal problems related to the…
We study the complexity of computational problems arising from existence theorems in extremal combinatorics. For some of these problems, a solution is guaranteed to exist based on an iterated application of the Pigeonhole Principle. This results in the definition of a new complexity class within TFNP, which we call PLC (for "polynomial long choice"). PLC includes all of PPP, as well as numerous previously unclassified total problems, including search problems related to Ramsey's theorem, the Sunflower theorem, the Erdős-Ko-Rado lemma, and König's lemma. Whether the first two of these four prob…

In the present work we study parameter spaces of two line point configurations introduced by Böröczky. These configurations are extremal from the point of view of Dirac-Motzkin Conjecture settled recently by Green and Tao. They have appeared also recently in commutative algebra in connection with the containment problem for symbolic and ordinary powers of homogeneous ideals and in algebraic geometry in considerations revolving around the Bounded Negativity Conjecture. Our main results are Theorem A and Theorem B. We show that the parameter space of what we call $B12$ configurations is a three …
A classical result in extremal graph theory is Mantel's Theorem, which states that every maximum triangle-free subgraph of $K_n$ is bipartite. A sparse version of Mantel's Theorem is that, for sufficiently large $p$, every maximum triangle-free subgraph of $G(n,p)$ is w.h.p. bipartite. Recently, DeMarco and Kahn proved this for $p > K \sqrt{\log n/n}$ for some constant $K$, and apart from the value of the constant this bound is best possible. We study an extremal problem of this type in random hypergraphs. Denote by $F_5$, which sometimes called as the generalized triangle, the 3-uniform hyper…
