Let s,t,m,n be positive integers such that sm=tn. Let M(m,s;n,t) be the number of m x n matrices over {0,1,2,...} with each row summing to s and each column summing to t. Equivalently, M(m,s;n,t) counts 2-way contingency tables of order m x n such that the row marginal sums are all s and the column marginal sums are all t. A third equivalent description is that M(m,s;n,t) is the number of semiregular labelled bipartite multigraphs with m vertices of degree s and n vertices of degree t. When m=n and s=t such matrices are also referred to as n x n magic squares with line sums equal to t. We prove a precise asymptotic formula for M(m,s;n,t) which is valid over a range of (m,s;n,t) in which m,n become infinite while remaining approximately equal and the average entry is not too small. This range includes the case where m/n, n/m, s/n and t/m are bounded from below.
We investigate the number of symmetric matrices of non-negative integers with zero diagonal such that each row sum is the same. Equivalently, these are zero diagonal symmetric contingency tables with uniform margins, or loop-free regular multigraphs. We determine the asymptotic value of this number as the size of the matrix tends to infinity, provided the row sum is large enough. We conjecture that our answer is valid for all row sums.
In this paper, we firstly extend a result of Bonin, Shapiro and Simion by giving the distribution of the major index over generalized Schröder paths. Then by providing a bijection between generalized Schröder paths and row-increasing tableaux of skew shapes with two rows, we obtain the distribution of the major index and the amajor index over these tableaux, which extends a result of Du, Fan and Zhao. We also generalize a result of Pechenik and give the distribution of the major index over increasing tableaux of skew shapes with two rows. Especially, a bijection from row-increasing tableaux wi…
Recently O. Pechenik studied the cyclic sieving of increasing tableaux of shape $2\times n$, and obtained a polynomial on the major index of these tableaux, which is a $q$-analogue of refined small Schröder numbers. We define row-increasing tableaux and study the major index and amajor index of row-increasing tableaux of shape $2 \times n$. The resulting polynomials are both $q$-analogues of refined large Schröder numbers. For both results we give bijective proofs.
In recent papers we have studied refined enumerations of alternating sign matrices with respect to a fixed set of top and bottom rows. The present paper is a first step towards extending these considerations to alternating sign matrices where in addition a number of left and right columns are fixed. The main result is a simple linear relation between the number of $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices where the top row as well as the left and the right column is fixed and the number of $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices where the two top rows and the bottom row is fixed. This may be seen …
We first enumerate a generalization of domino towers that was proposed by Tricia M. Brown (J. Integer Seq. 20 (2017)), which we call S-omino towers. We establish equations that the generating function must satisfy and then apply the Lagrange inversion formula to find a closed formula for the number of towers. We also show a connection to generalized Dyck paths and provide an explicit bijection. Finally, we consider the set of row-convex k-omino towers, introduced by Brown, and calculate an exact generating function.
A probabilistic bijection between twenty-vertex configurations with a free west boundary and Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns avoiding three equal entries in a row
A folklore result uses the Lovasz local lemma to analyze the discrepancy of hypergraphs with bounded degree and edge size. We generalize this result to the context of real matrices with bounded row and column sums.
This paper improves previously known bounds on the determinant of 0-1 matrices where each row has fixed support size. This uses a method based on Scheinerman's, with new analyses to improve upon his conjectures.
Let $g_{n_1,n_2}$ be the number of standard Young tableau of truncated shifted shape with $n_1$ rows and $n_2$ boxes in each row. By using of the integral method this paper derives the recurrence relations of $g_{3,n}$, $g_{n,4}$ and $g_{n,5}$ respectively. Specially, $g_{n,4}$ is the $(2n-1)$-st Pell number.
The enumeration of standard Young tableaux (SYTs) of shape λ can be easily computed by the hook-length formula. In 1981, Amitai Regev proved that the number of SYTs having at most three rows with n entries equals the nth Motzkin number M_n. In 2006, Regev conjectured that the total number of SYTs of skew shape λ/(2, 1) over all partitions λ having at most three parts with n entries is the difference of two Motzkin numbers, M_{n-1} - M_{n-3}. Ekhad and Zeilberger proved Regev's conjecture using a computer program. In 2009, S.-P. Eu found a bijection between Motzkin paths and SYTs of skew shape …
Monotone triangles are plane integer arrays of triangular shape with certain monotonicity conditions along rows and diagonals. Their significance is mainly due to the fact that they correspond to $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices when prescribing $(1,2,...,n)$ as bottom row of the array. We define monotone $(d,m)$--trapezoids as monotone triangles with $m$ rows where the $d-1$ top rows are removed. (These objects are also equivalent to certain partial alternating sign matrices.) It is known that the number of monotone triangles with bottom row $(k_1,...,k_n)$ is given by a polynomial $α(n…

Zeilberger proved the Refined Alternating Sign Matrix Theorem, which gives a product formula, first conjectured by Mills, Robbins and Rumsey, for the number of alternating sign matrices with given top row. Stroganov proved an explicit formula for the number of alternating sign matrices with given top and bottom rows. Fischer and Romik considered a different kind of "doubly-refined enumeration" where one counts alternating sign matrices with given top two rows, and obtained partial results on this enumeration. In this paper we continue the study of the doubly-refined enumeration with respect to…
In this short note, we compute the precise asymptotics for the number of contingency tables with non-uniform margins. More precisely, for parameter $n,δ, B,C>0$, we consider the set of matrices whose first $[n^δ]$ rows and columns have sum $[BCn]$ and the rest $n$ rows and columns have sum $[Cn]$. We compute the precise asymptotics of the cardinality of this set when $B<B_c=1+\sqrt{1+1/C}$ using the maximal entropy methods developed by Barvinok and Hartigan. The only contribution of this note is a detailed expansion of the determinant of quadratic forms in asymptotic formulas.
Let S=(s_1,s_2,..., s_m) and T = (t_1,t_2,..., t_n) be vectors of non-negative integers with sum_{i=1}^{m} s_i = sum_{j=1}^n t_j. Let B(S,T) be the number of m*n matrices over {0,1} with j-th row sum equal to s_j for 1 <= j <= m and k-th column sum equal to t_k for 1 <= k <= n. Equivalently, B(S,T) is the number of bipartite graphs with m vertices in one part with degrees given by S, and n vertices in the other part with degrees given by T. Most research on the asymptotics of B(S,T) has focused on the sparse case, where the best result is that of Greenhill, McKay and Wang (2006). In the case o…
This is a survey of the recent progress and open questions on the structure of the sets of 0-1 and non-negative integer matrices with prescribed row and column sums. We discuss cardinality estimates, the structure of a random matrix from the set, discrete versions of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality and the statistical dependence between row and column sums.
We present refined enumeration formulas for lattice paths in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with two kinds of steps, by keeping track of the number of descents (i.e., turns in a given direction), the major index (i.e., the sum of the positions of the descents), and the number of crossings. One formula considers crossings between a path and a fixed line; the other considers crossings between two paths. Building on the first paper of the series, which used lattice path bijections to give the enumeration with respect to major index and crossings, we obtain a refinement that keeps track of the number of descents.…
An alternating sign matrix is a square matrix with entries 1, 0 and -1 such that the sum of the entries in each row and each column is equal to 1 and the nonzero entries alternate in sign along each row and each column. To some of the symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices and their variations, G. Kuperberg associate square ice models with appropriate boundary conditions, and give determinanat and Pfaffian formulae for the partition functions. In this paper, we utilize several determinant and Pfaffian identities to evaluate Kuperberg's determinants and Pfaffians, and express the round p…
We study a further refinement of the standard refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices (ASMs) according to their first two rows instead of just the first row, and more general "d-refined" enumerations of ASMs according to the first d rows. For the doubly-refined case of d=2, we derive a system of linear equations satisfied by the doubly-refined enumeration numbers A_{n,i,j} that enumerate such matrices. We give a conjectural explicit formula for A_{n,i,j} and formulate several other conjectures about the sufficiency of the linear equations to determine the A_{n,i,j}'s and about an exte…
We formulate conjectures regarding the maximum value and maximizing matrices of the permanent and of diagonal products on the set of stochastic matrices with bounded rank. We formulate equivalent conjectures on upper bounds for these functions for nonnegative matrices based on their rank, row sums and column sums. In particular we conjecture that the permanent of a singular nonnegative matrix is bounded by 1/2 times the minimum of the product of its row sums and the product of its column sums, and that the product of the elements of any diagonal of a singular nonnegative matrix is bounded by 1…
We provide a simplified proof of our operator formula for the number of monotone triangles with prescribed bottom row, which enables us to deduce three generalizations of the formula. One of the generalizations concerns a certain weighted enumeration of monotone triangles which specializes to the weighted enumeration of alternating sign matrices with respect to the number of -1s in the matrix when prescribing $(1,2,...,n)$ as the bottom row of the monotone triangle.
We consider the set Sigma(R,C) of all mxn matrices having 0-1 entries and prescribed row sums R=(r_1, ..., r_m) and column sums C=(c_1, ..., c_n). We prove an asymptotic estimate for the cardinality |Sigma(R, C)| via the solution to a convex optimization problem. We show that if Sigma(R, C) is sufficiently large, then a random matrix D in Sigma(R, C) sampled from the uniform probability measure in Sigma(R,C) with high probability is close to a particular matrix Z=Z(R,C) that maximizes the sum of entropies of entries among all matrices with row sums R, column sums C and entries between 0 and 1.…
The present paper deals with the discrete inverse problem of reconstructing binary matrices from their row and column sums under additional constraints on the number and pattern of entries in specified minors. While the classical consistency and reconstruction problems for two directions in discrete tomography can be solved in polynomial time, it turns out that these window constraints cause various unexpected complexity jumps back and forth from polynomial-time solvability to $\mathbb{N}\mathbb{P}$-hardness.
In a recent article (arXiv:1507.03499) (joint with Alon Regev) we studied sums of squares of characters Chi(L,M) of the Symmetric Group over shapes L that are two-rowed, and shapes L that are hook shapes, and M is an arbitrary shape that mostly consists of ones, and designed algorithms for closed-form evaluations of each of these. We noted (and proved) that when M is the shape with n cells consisting of 3 followed by n-3 ones, the former sum equals one half time the analogous sum over hook shapes with n+2 cells and M is the partition consisting of 3,2, followed by n-3 ones. Here we show that t…
We count mxn non-negative integer matrices (contingency tables) with prescribed row and column sums (margins). For a wide class of smooth margins we establish a computationally efficient asymptotic formula approximating the number of matrices within a relative error which approaches 0 as m and n grow.
Let \svec = (s_1,...,s_m) and \tvec = (t_1,...,t_n) be vectors of nonnegative integer-valued functions of m,n with equal sum S = sum_{i=1}^m s_i = sum_{j=1}^n t_j. Let M(\svec,\tvec) be the number of m*n matrices with nonnegative integer entries such that the i-th row has row sum s_i and the j-th column has column sum t_j for all i,j. Such matrices occur in many different settings, an important example being the contingency tables (also called frequency tables) important in statistics. Define s=max_i s_i and t=max_j t_j. Previous work has established the asymptotic value of M(\svec,\tvec) as m…
We discuss the problem of counting {\em incidence matrices}, i.e. zero-one matrices with no zero rows or columns. Using different approaches we give three different proofs for the leading asymptotics for the number of matrices with $n$ ones as $n\to\infty$. We also give refined results for the asymptotic number of $i\times j$ incidence matrices with $n$ ones.
A \emph{magic square} is an $n \times n$ array of distinct positive integers whose sum along any row, column, or main diagonal is the same number. We compute the number of such squares for $n=4$, as a function of either the magic sum or an upper bound on the entries. The previous record for both functions was the $n=3$ case. Our methods are based on inside-out polytopes, i.e., the combination of hyperplane arrangements and Ehrhart's theory of lattice-point enumeration.
Alternating sign triangles (ASTs) have recently been introduced by Ayyer, Behrend and the author, and it was proven that there is the same number of ASTs with n rows as there is of nxn alternating sign matrices (ASMs). We prove a conjecture by Behrend on a refined enumeration of ASTs with respect to a statistic that is shown to have the same distribution as the column of the unique 1 in the top row of an ASM. The proof of the conjecture is based on a certain multivariate generating function of ASTs that takes the positions of the columns with sum 1 (1-columns) into account. We also prove a cur…
This paper is the second in a series of planned papers which provide first bijective proofs of alternating sign matrix results. Based on the main result from the first paper, we construct a bijective proof of the enumeration formula for alternating sign matrices and of the fact that alternating sign matrices are equinumerous with descending plane partitions. We are also able to refine these bijections by including the position of the unique $1$ in the top row of the matrix. Our constructions rely on signed sets and related notions. The starting point for these constructions were known ``comput…
We consider nonnegative integer matrices with specified row and column sums and upper bounds on the entries. We show that the logarithm of the number of such matrices is approximated by a concave function of the row and column sums. We give efficiently computable estimators for this function, including one suggested by a maximum-entropy random model; we show that these estimators are asymptotically exact as the dimension of the matrices goes to infinity. We finish by showing that, for kappa >= 2 and for sufficiently small row and column sums, the number of matrices with these row and column su…
We consider possible reconstructions of a binary image of which the row and column sums are given. For any reconstruction we can define the length of the boundary of the image. In this paper we prove a new lower bound on the length of this boundary. In contrast to simple bounds that have been derived previously, in this new lower bound the information of both row and column sums is combined.
A combinatorial rectangle may be viewed as a matrix whose entries are all +-1. The discrepancy of an m by n matrix is the maximum among the absolute values of its m row sums and n column sums. In this paper, we investigate combinatorial rectangles with minimum discrepancy (0 or 1 for each line depending on the parity). Specifically, we get explicit formula for the number of matrices with minimum L^infinity-discrepancy up to 4 rows, and establish the order of magnitude of the number of such matrices with m rows and n columns while m is fixed and n approaches infinity. By considering the number …
An important problem arising in the study of complex networks, for instance in community detection and motif finding, is the sampling of graphs with fixed degree sequence. The equivalent problem of generating random 0,1 matrices with fixed row and column sums is frequently used as a quantitative tool in ecology. It has however proven very challenging to design sampling algorithms that are both fast and unbiased. This article focusses on Markov chain approaches for sampling, where a close-to-random graph is produced by applying a large number N of small changes to a given graph. Examples are th…
Two matrices with elements taken from the set {-1,1} are Hadamard equivalent if one can be converted into the other by a sequence of permutations of rows and columns, and negations of rows and columns. In this paper we summarize what is known about the number of equivalence classes of matrices having maximal determinant. We establish that there are 7 equivalence classes for matrices of order 21 and that there are at least 9,884 equivalence classes for matrices of order 26. The latter result is obtained primarily using a switching technique for producing new designs from old.
We prove an asymptotic estimate for the number of mxn non-negative integer matrices (contingency tables) with prescribed row and column sums and, more generally, for the number of integer feasible flows in a network. Similarly, we estimate the volume of the polytope of mxn non-negative real matrices with prescribed row and column sums. Our estimates are solutions of convex optimization problems and hence can be computed efficiently. As a corollary, we show that if row sums R=(r_1, ..., r_m) and column sums C=(c_1, ..., c_n) with r_1 + ... + r_m =c_1 + ... +c_n =N are sufficiently far from cons…
We suggest an approach for the enumeration of minimal permutations having d descents which uses skew Young tableaux. We succeed in finding a general expression for the number of such permutations in terms of (several) sums of determinants. We then generalize the class of skew Young tableaux under consideration; this allows in particular to discover some presumably new results concerning Eulerian numbers.
Let d=(d_1,d_2,..., d_n) be a vector of non-negative integers. We study the number of symmetric 0-1 matrices whose row sum vector equals d. While previous work has focussed on the case of zero diagonal, we allow diagonal entries to equal 1. When forming the row sum, each diagonal entry is multiplied by a factor of D, where D is 1 or 2. The case D=1 corresponds to enumeration by the usual row sum of matrices. The case D=2 corresponds to enumeration by degree sequence of undirected graphs with loops but no repeated edges, due to the convention that a loop contributes 2 to the degree of its incid…
We define two notions of partial sums of a Riordan array, corresponding respectively to the partial sums of the rows and the partial sums of the columns of the Riordan array in question. We characterize the matrices that arise from these operations. On the one hand, we obtain a new Riordan array, while on the other hand, we obtain a rectangular array which has an inverse that is a lower Hessenberg matrix. We examine the structure of these Hessenberg matrices. We end with a generalization linked to the Fibonacci numbers and phyllotaxis.
We show that the {\em column sum optimization problem}, of finding a $(0,1)$-matrix with prescribed row sums which minimizes the sum of evaluations of given functions at its column sums, can be solved in polynomial time, either when all functions are the same or when all row sums are bounded by any constant. We conjecture that the more general {\em line sum optimization problem}, of finding a matrix minimizing the sum of given functions evaluated at its row sums and column sums, can also be solved in polynomial time.
Gale and Ryser found a criterion for existence of a binary matrix with given row and column sums. Mirsky extended the theorem of Gale and Ryser to $q$-ary matrices. In this paper, we are interested in higher dimensional extension of these theorems. We first introduce multidimensional matrices as a higher dimensional generalization of matrices. We next replace the concept of row and columns in matrices by lines in multidimensional matrices. We finally find a criterion for existence of a $q$-ary multidimensional matrices with given line sums.
Many enumeration problems in combinatorics, including such fundamental questions as the number of regular graphs, can be expressed as high-dimensional complex integrals. Motivated by the need for a systematic study of the asymptotic behaviour of such integrals, we establish explicit bounds on the exponentials of complex martingales. Those bounds applied to the case of truncated normal distributions are precise enough to include and extend many enumerative results of Barvinok, Canfield, Gao, Greenhill, Hartigan, Isaev, McKay, Wang, Wormald, and others. Our method applies to sums as well as inte…
We represent the number of mxn non-negative integer matrices (contingency tables) with prescribed row sums and column sums as the expected value of the permanent of a non-negative random matrix with exponentially distributed entries. We bound the variance of the obtained estimator, from which it follows that if the row and column sums are bounded by a constant fixed in advance, we get a polynomial time approximation scheme for counting contingency tables. We show that the complete symmetric polynomial of a fixed degree in n variables can be epsilon-approximated coefficient-wise by a sum of pow…
We compute the generating function of column-strict plane partitions with parts in {1,2,...,n}, at most c columns, p rows of odd length and k parts equal to n. This refines both, Krattenthaler's ["The major counting of nonintersecting lattice paths and generating functions for tableaux", Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 115 (1995)] and the author's ["A method for proving polynomial enumeration formulas", preprint] refinement of the Bender-Knuth (ex-)Conjecture. The result is proved by an extension of the method for proving polynomial enumeration formulas which was introduced by the author to q-quasi-poly…
A magic series is a set of natural numbers that, by virtue of its size, sum, and maximum value, could fill a row of a normal magic square. In this paper, we derive an exact two-dimensional integral representation for the number of magic series of order N. By applying the stationary phase approximation, we develop an expansion in powers of 1/N for the number of magic series and calculate the first few terms. We find excellent agreement between our approximation and the known exact values. Related results are presented for magic cube and hypercube series, bimagic series, and trimagic series.
This article studies sums over all compositions of an integer. We derive a generating function for this quantity, and apply it to several special functions, including various generalized Bernoulli numbers. We connect composition sums with a recursive tree introduced by S.G. Woon and extended by P. Fuchs under the name "general PI tree", in which an output sequence $\{x_n\}$ is associated to the input sequence $\{g_n\}$ by summing over each row of the tree built from $\{g_n\}$. Our link with the notion of compositions allows to introduce a modification of Fuchs' tree that takes into account non…
In this paper we determine two asymptotic results for Jack measures on partitions, a model defined by two specializations of Jack polynomials proposed by Borodin-Olshanski in [European J. Combin. 26.6 (2005): 795-834]. Assuming these two specializations are the same, we derive limit shapes and Gaussian fluctuations for the anisotropic profiles of these random partitions in three asymptotic regimes associated to diverging, fixed, and vanishing values of the Jack parameter. To do so, we introduce a generalization of Motzkin paths we call "ribbon paths", show for general Jack measures that certai…
An integer partition of $n$ is a decreasing sequence of positive integers that add up to $[n]$. Back in $1979$ Macdonald posed a question about the limit value of the probability that two partitions chosen uniformly at random, and independently of each other, are comparable in terms of the dominance order. In $1982$ Wilf conjectured that the uniformly random partition is a size-ordered degree sequence of a simple graph with the limit probability $0$. In $1997$ we showed that in both, seemingly unrelated, cases the limit probabilities are indeed zero, but our method left open the problem of con…
The number of $n \times n$ matrices whose entries are either -1, 0, or 1, whose row- and column- sums are all 1, and such that in every row and every column the non-zero entries alternate in sign, is proved to be $[1!4! >... (3n-2)!]/[n!(n+1)! ... (2n-1)!]$, as conjectured by Mills, Robbins, and Rumsey.
The {\em line sum optimization problem} asks for a $(0,1)$-matrix minimizing the sum of given functions evaluated at its row and column sums. We show that the {\em uniform} problem, with identical row functions and identical column functions, and the {\em monotone} problem, over matrices with nonincreasing row and column sums, are polynomial time solvable.
