We consider nonnegative integer matrices with specified row and column sums and upper bounds on the entries. We show that the logarithm of the number of such matrices is approximated by a concave function of the row and column sums. We give efficiently computable estimators for this function, including one suggested by a maximum-entropy random model; we show that these estimators are asymptotically exact as the dimension of the matrices goes to infinity. We finish by showing that, for kappa >= 2 and for sufficiently small row and column sums, the number of matrices with these row and column sums and with entries <= kappa is greater by an exponential factor than predicted by a heuristic of independence.
We study a generalisation of Simpson reversal (also known as Simpson's paradox or the Yule-Simpson effect) to $2 \times 2 \times 2$ contingency tables and characterise the cases for which it can and cannot occur with two combinatorial-geometric lemmas. We also present a conjecture based on some computational experiments on the expected likelihood of such events.
The Diaconis--Gangolli random walk is an algorithm that generates an almost uniform random graph with prescribed degrees. In this paper, we study the mixing time of the Diaconis--Gangolli random walk restricted on $n\times n$ contingency tables over $\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z}$. We prove that the random walk exhibits cutoff at $\frac{n^2}{4(1- \cos{\frac{2 π}{q}})} \log n, $ when $\log q=o\left (\frac{\sqrt{\log n}}{\log \log n}\right )$.
We present a randomized approximation algorithm for counting contingency tables, mxn non-negative integer matrices with given row sums R=(r_1, ..., r_m) and column sums C=(c_1, ..., c_n). We define smooth margins (R,C) in terms of the typical table and prove that for such margins the algorithm has quasi-polynomial N^{O(ln N)} complexity, where N=r_1+...+r_m=c_1+...+c_n. We present a new lower bound on the number of contingency tables, improving upon and extending previous lower bounds by Barvinok and Gurvits. We obtain sharp asymptotic estimates on the number of $n \times n$ contingency tables with two linear margins $Cn$ and $BCn$. The results imply a second order phase transition on the number of such contingency tables, with a critical value at \ts $B_{c}:=1 + \sqrt{1+1/C}$. Markov basis for statistical model of contingency tables gives a useful tool for performing the conditional test of the model via Markov chain Monte Carlo method. In this paper we derive explicit forms of Markov bases for change point models and block diagonal effect models, which are typical block-wise effect models of two-way contingency tables, and perform conditional tests with some real data sets.
In this short note, we compute the precise asymptotics for the number of contingency tables with non-uniform margins. More precisely, for parameter $n,δ, B,C>0$, we consider the set of matrices whose first $[n^δ]$ rows and columns have sum $[BCn]$ and the rest $n$ rows and columns have sum $[Cn]$. We compute the precise asymptotics of the cardinality of this set when $B<B_c=1+\sqrt{1+1/C}$ using the maximal entropy methods developed by Barvinok and Hartigan. The only contribution of this note is a detailed expansion of the determinant of quadratic forms in asymptotic formulas.
In this paper we study the computation of Markov bases for contingency tables whose cell entries have an upper bound. In general a Markov basis for unbounded contingency table under a certain model differs from a Markov basis for bounded tables. Rapallo, (2007) applied Lawrence lifting to compute a Markov basis for contingency tables whose cell entries are bounded. However, in the process, one has to compute the universal Gröbner basis of the ideal associated with the design matrix for a model which is, in general, larger than any reduced Gröbner basis. Examples of small contingency tables on binary random variables with large integer programming gaps on the lower bounds of cell entries were constructed by Sullivant. We argue here that the margins for which these constructed large gaps occur are rarely encountered, thus reopening the question of whether linear programming is an effective heuristic for detecting disclosures when releasing margins of multi-way tables. The notion of ``rarely encountered'' is made precise through the language of standard pairs.

One of its noted applications is to the binary contingency tables problem, an important problem in statistics, where the goal is to estimate the number of 0/1 matrices with prescribed row and column sums. We discuss connecting tables with zero-one entries by a subset of a Markov basis. In this paper, as a Markov basis we consider the Graver basis, which corresponds to the unique minimal Markov basis for the Lawrence lifting of the original configuration. Since the Graver basis tends to be large, it is of interest to clarify conditions such that a subset of the Graver basis, in particular a minimal Markov basis itself, connects tables with zero-one entries. In this paper we count the number of rows f_n with the value "false" in the truth tables of all bracketed formulae with n distinct variables connected by the binary connective of implication. We find a recurrence and an asymptotic formulae for f_n. We also show that the ratio of f_n to the total number of rows converges to \frac{3-\sqrt{3}}{6}.
We show that almost every entry in the character table of $S_n$ is even as $n\to\infty$. This resolves a conjecture of Miller. We similarly prove that almost every entry in the character table of $S_n$ is zero modulo $3,5,7,11,$ and $13$ as $n\to\infty$, partially addressing another conjecture of Miller.
In this paper we present two independent computational proofs that the monoid derived from $5\times 5\times 3$ contingency tables is normal, completing the classification by Hibi and Ohsugi. We show that Vlach's vector disproving normality for the monoid derived from $6\times 4\times 3$ contingency tables is the unique minimal such vector up to symmetry. Finally, we compute the full Hilbert basis of the cone associated with the non-normal monoid of the semi-graphoid for $|N|=5$. The computations are based on extensions of the packages LattE-4ti2 and Normaliz.
