Let S=(s_1,s_2,..., s_m) and T = (t_1,t_2,..., t_n) be vectors of non-negative integers with sum_{i=1}^{m} s_i = sum_{j=1}^n t_j. Let B(S,T) be the number of m*n matrices over {0,1} with j-th row sum equal to s_j for 1 <= j <= m and k-th column sum equal to t_k for 1 <= k <= n. Equivalently, B(S,T) is the number of bipartite graphs with m vertices in one part with degrees given by S, and n vertices in the other part with degrees given by T. Most research on the asymptotics of B(S,T) has focused on the sparse case, where the best result is that of Greenhill, McKay and Wang (2006). In the case of dense matrices, the only precise result is for the case of equal row sums and equal column sums (Canfield and McKay, 2005). This paper extends the analytic methods used by the latter paper to the case where the row and column sums can vary within certain limits. Interestingly, the result can be expressed by the same formula which holds in the sparse case.
We investigate the number of symmetric matrices of non-negative integers with zero diagonal such that each row sum is the same. Equivalently, these are zero diagonal symmetric contingency tables with uniform margins, or loop-free regular multigraphs. We determine the asymptotic value of this number as the size of the matrix tends to infinity, provided the row sum is large enough. We conjecture that our answer is valid for all row sums.
Let s,t,m,n be positive integers such that sm=tn. Let M(m,s;n,t) be the number of m x n matrices over {0,1,2,...} with each row summing to s and each column summing to t. Equivalently, M(m,s;n,t) counts 2-way contingency tables of order m x n such that the row marginal sums are all s and the column marginal sums are all t. A third equivalent description is that M(m,s;n,t) is the number of semiregular labelled bipartite multigraphs with m vertices of degree s and n vertices of degree t. When m=n and s=t such matrices are also referred to as n x n magic squares with line sums equal to t. We prov…
We give an extension of the classical Schensted correspondence to the case of ribbon tableaux, where ribbons are allowed to be of different sizes. This is done by extending Fomin's growth diagram approach of the classical correspondence between permutations and pairs of standard tableaux of the same shape, in particular by allowing signs in the enumeration. As an application we give a combinatorial proof for the column sums of the character table of the symmetric group.
A hypergraph is simple if it has no loops and no repeated edges, and a hypergraph is linear if it is simple and each pair of edges intersects in at most one vertex. For $n\geq 3$, let $r= r(n)\geq 3$ be an integer and let $\boldsymbol{k} = (k_1,\ldots, k_n)$ be a vector of nonnegative integers, where each $k_j = k_j(n)$ may depend on $n$. Let $M = M(n) = \sum_{j=1}^n k_j$ for all $n\geq 3$, and define the set $\mathcal{I} = \{ n\geq 3 \mid r(n) \text{ divides } M(n)\}$. We assume that $\mathcal{I}$ is infinite, and perform asymptotics as $n$ tends to infinity along $\mathcal{I}$. Our main resu…
We suggest an approach for the enumeration of minimal permutations having d descents which uses skew Young tableaux. We succeed in finding a general expression for the number of such permutations in terms of (several) sums of determinants. We then generalize the class of skew Young tableaux under consideration; this allows in particular to discover some presumably new results concerning Eulerian numbers.
We provide bivariate asymptotics for the poly-Bernoulli numbers, a combinatorial array that enumerates lonesum matrices, using the methods of Analytic Combinatorics in Several Variables (ACSV). For the diagonal asymptotic (i.e., for the special case of square lonesum matrices) we present an alternative proof based on Parseval's identity. In addition, we provide an application in Algebraic Statistics on the asymptotic ML-degree of the bivariate multinomial missing data problem, and we strengthen an existing result on asymptotic enumeration of permutations having a specified excedance set.
Let \svec = (s_1,...,s_m) and \tvec = (t_1,...,t_n) be vectors of nonnegative integer-valued functions of m,n with equal sum S = sum_{i=1}^m s_i = sum_{j=1}^n t_j. Let M(\svec,\tvec) be the number of m*n matrices with nonnegative integer entries such that the i-th row has row sum s_i and the j-th column has column sum t_j for all i,j. Such matrices occur in many different settings, an important example being the contingency tables (also called frequency tables) important in statistics. Define s=max_i s_i and t=max_j t_j. Previous work has established the asymptotic value of M(\svec,\tvec) as m…
Many enumeration problems in combinatorics, including such fundamental questions as the number of regular graphs, can be expressed as high-dimensional complex integrals. Motivated by the need for a systematic study of the asymptotic behaviour of such integrals, we establish explicit bounds on the exponentials of complex martingales. Those bounds applied to the case of truncated normal distributions are precise enough to include and extend many enumerative results of Barvinok, Canfield, Gao, Greenhill, Hartigan, Isaev, McKay, Wang, Wormald, and others. Our method applies to sums as well as inte…
In this paper we determine two asymptotic results for Jack measures on partitions, a model defined by two specializations of Jack polynomials proposed by Borodin-Olshanski in [European J. Combin. 26.6 (2005): 795-834]. Assuming these two specializations are the same, we derive limit shapes and Gaussian fluctuations for the anisotropic profiles of these random partitions in three asymptotic regimes associated to diverging, fixed, and vanishing values of the Jack parameter. To do so, we introduce a generalization of Motzkin paths we call "ribbon paths", show for general Jack measures that certai…
Intractable enumeration problems are like Russian nesting dolls: structural properties of monomer-dimer coverings on two-dimensional quadratic lattices
An explicit expression for the numbers $A(n,r;3)$ describing the refined 3-enumeration of alternating sign matrices is given. The derivation is based on the recent results of Stroganov for the corresponding generating function. As a result, $A(n,r;3)$'s are represented as 1-fold sums which can also be written in terms of terminating ${}_4F_3$ series of argument 1/4.
We discuss several well known results about Schur functions that can be proved using cancellations in alternating summations; notably we shall discuss the Pieri and Murnaghan-Nakayama rules, the Jacobi-Trudi identity and its dual (Von N{ä}gelsbach-Kostka) identity, their proofs using the correspondence with lattice paths of Gessel and Viennot, and finally the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Our our goal is to show that the mentioned statements are closely related, and can be proved using variations of the same basic technique. We also want to emphasise the central part that is played by matrices o…
This article deals with the enumeration of directed lattice walks on the integers with any finite set of steps, starting at a given altitude $j$ and ending at a given altitude $k$, with additional constraints such as, for example, to never attain altitude $0$ in-between. We first discuss the case of walks on the integers with steps $-h, \dots, -1, +1, \dots, +h$. The case $h=1$ is equivalent to the classical Dyck paths, for which many ways of getting explicit formulas involving Catalan-like numbers are known. The case $h=2$ corresponds to "basketball" walks, which we treat in full detail. Then…
Given a complete graph with positive weights on its edges, we define the weight of a subset of edges as the product of weights of the edges in the subset and consider sums (partition functions) of weights over subsets of various kinds: cycle covers, closed walks, spanning trees. We show that if the weights of the edges of the graph are within a constant factor, fixed in advance, of each other then the bulk of the partition function is concentrated on the subsets of a particularly simple structure: cycle covers with few cycles, walks that visit every vertex only few times, and spanning trees wi…
We give an algorithm that generates a uniformly random contingency table with specified marginals, i.e. a matrix with non-negative integer values and specified row and column sums. Such algorithms are useful in statistics and combinatorics. When $Δ^4< M/5$, where $Δ$ is the maximum of the row and column sums and $M$ is the sum of all entries of the matrix, our algorithm runs in time linear in $M$ in expectation. Most previously published algorithms for this problem are approximate samplers based on Markov chain Monte Carlo, whose provable bounds on the mixing time are typically polynomials wit…
Let S and T be vectors of positive integers with the same sum. We study the uniform distribution on the space of simple bipartite graphs with degree sequence S in one part and T in the other; equivalently, binary matrices with row sums S and column sums T. In particular, we find precise formulae for the probabilities that a given bipartite graph is edge-disjoint from, a subgraph of, or an induced subgraph of a random graph in the class. We also give similar formulae for the uniform distribution on the set of simple directed graphs with out-degrees S and in-degrees T. In each case, the graphs o…
We find a new approach to computing the remainder of a polynomial modulo $x^n-1$; such a computation is called modular enumeration. Given a polynomial with coefficients from a commutative $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra, our first main result constructs the remainder simply from the coefficients of residues of the polynomial modulo $Φ_d(x)$ for each $d\mid n$. Since such residues can often be found to have nice values, this simplifies a number of modular enumeration problems; indeed in some cases, such residues are already known while the related modular enumeration problem has remained unsolved. We list…
The present paper deals with the discrete inverse problem of reconstructing binary matrices from their row and column sums under additional constraints on the number and pattern of entries in specified minors. While the classical consistency and reconstruction problems for two directions in discrete tomography can be solved in polynomial time, it turns out that these window constraints cause various unexpected complexity jumps back and forth from polynomial-time solvability to $\mathbb{N}\mathbb{P}$-hardness.
The asymptotic volume of the polytope of symmetric stochastic matrices can be determined by asymptotic enumeration techniques as in the case of the Birkhoff polytope. These methods can be extended to polytopes of symmetric stochastic matrices with given diagonal, if this diagonal varies not too wildly. To this end, the asymptotic number of symmetric matrices with natural entries, zero diagonal and varying row sums is determined and a third order correction factor to this is examined.
Moments of secular and inverse secular coefficients, averaged over random matrices from classical groups, are related to the enumeration of non-negative matrices with prescribed row and column sums. Similar random matrix averages are related to certain configurations of vicious random walkers and to the enumeration of plane partitions. The combinatorial meaning of the average of the characteristic polynomial of random Hermitian and Wishart matrices is also investigated, and consequently several simple universality results are derived.
Fourier-Dedekind sums are a generalization of Dedekind sums - important number-theoretical objects that arise in many areas of mathematics, including lattice point enumeration, signature defects of manifolds and pseudo random number generators. A remarkable feature of Fourier-Dedekind sums is that they satisfy a reciprocity law called Rademacher reciprocity. In this paper, we study several aspects of Fourier-Dedekind sums: properties of general Fourier-Dedekind sums, extensions of the reciprocity law, average behavior of Fourier-Dedekind sums, and finally, extrema of 2-dimensional Fourier-Dede…
A sequential importance sampling algorithm is developed for the distribution that results when a matrix of independent, but not identically distributed, Bernoulli random variables is conditioned on a given sequence of row and column sums. This conditional distribution arises in a variety of applications and includes as a special case the uniform distribution over zero-one tables with specified margins. The algorithm uses dynamic programming to combine hard margin constraints, combinatorial approximations, and additional non-uniform weighting in a principled way to give state-of-the-art results…

We consider nonnegative integer matrices with specified row and column sums and upper bounds on the entries. We show that the logarithm of the number of such matrices is approximated by a concave function of the row and column sums. We give efficiently computable estimators for this function, including one suggested by a maximum-entropy random model; we show that these estimators are asymptotically exact as the dimension of the matrices goes to infinity. We finish by showing that, for kappa >= 2 and for sufficiently small row and column sums, the number of matrices with these row and column su…
Double Hurwitz numbers enumerating weighted $n$-sheeted branched coverings of the Riemann sphere or, equivalently, weighted paths in the Cayley graph of $S_n$ generated by transpositions are determined by an associated weight generating function. A uniquely determined $1$-parameter family of 2D Toda $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type is shown to consist of generating functions for such weighted Hurwitz numbers. Four classical cases are detailed, in which the weighting is uniform: Okounkov's double Hurwitz numbers, for which the ramification is simple at all but two specified branch points; t…
The completely positive maps, a generalization of the nonnegative matrices, are a well-studied class of maps from $n\times n$ matrices to $m\times m$ matrices. The existence of the operator analogues of doubly stochastic scalings of matrices is equivalent to a multitude of problems in computer science and mathematics, such rational identity testing in non-commuting variables, noncommutative rank of symbolic matrices, and a basic problem in invariant theory (Garg, Gurvits, Oliveira and Wigderson, FOCS, 2016). We study operator scaling with specified marginals, which is the operator analogue of …
Let d=(d_1,d_2,..., d_n) be a vector of non-negative integers. We study the number of symmetric 0-1 matrices whose row sum vector equals d. While previous work has focussed on the case of zero diagonal, we allow diagonal entries to equal 1. When forming the row sum, each diagonal entry is multiplied by a factor of D, where D is 1 or 2. The case D=1 corresponds to enumeration by the usual row sum of matrices. The case D=2 corresponds to enumeration by degree sequence of undirected graphs with loops but no repeated edges, due to the convention that a loop contributes 2 to the degree of its incid…
We study the calculation of the volume of the polytope B_n of n by n doubly stochastic matrices; that is, the set of real non-negative matrices with all row and column sums equal to one. We describe two methods. The first involves a decomposition of the polytope into simplices. The second involves the enumeration of ``magic squares'', i.e., n by n non-negative integer matrices whose rows and columns all sum to the same integer. We have used the first method to confirm the previously known values through n=7. This method can also be used to compute the volumes of faces of B_n. For example, we h…
For a vertex subset $X$ of a graph $G$, let $Δ_{t}(X)$ be the maximum value of the degree sums of the subsets of $X$ of size $t$. In this paper, we prove the following result: Let $k$ be a positive integer, and let $G$ be an $m$-connected graph of order $n \ge 5k - 2$. If $Δ_{2}(X) \ge n$ for every independent set $X$ of size $\lceil m/k \rceil+1$ in $G$, then $G$ has a 2-factor with exactly $k$ cycles. This is a common generalization of the results obtained by Brandt et al. [Degree conditions for 2-factors, J. Graph Theory 24 (1997) 165-173] and Yamashita [On degree sum conditions for long cy…
A multiparametric family of 2D Toda $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type is shown to provide generating functions for composite, signed Hurwitz numbers that enumerate certain classes of branched coverings of the Riemann sphere and paths in the Cayley graph of $S_n$. The coefficients $F^{c_1, ..., c_l}_{d_1, ..., d_m}(μ, ν)$ in their series expansion over products $P_μP'_ν$ of power sum symmetric functions in the two sets of Toda flow parameters and powers of the $l+m$ auxiliary parameters are shown to enumerate $|μ|=|ν|=n$ fold branched covers of the Riemann sphere with specified ramification …
