We study the calculation of the volume of the polytope B_n of n by n doubly stochastic matrices; that is, the set of real non-negative matrices with all row and column sums equal to one.
We describe two methods. The first involves a decomposition of the polytope into simplices. The second involves the enumeration of ``magic squares'', i.e., n by n non-negative integer matrices whose rows and columns all sum to the same integer.
We have used the first method to confirm the previously known values through n=7. This method can also be used to compute the volumes of faces of B_n. For example, we have observed that the volume of a particular face of B_n appears to be a product of Catalan numbers.
We have used the second method to find the volume for n=8, which we believe was not previously known.
In Ehrhart theory, the $h^*$-vector of a rational polytope often provide insights into properties of the polytope that may be otherwise obscured. As an example, the Birkhoff polytope, also known as the polytope of real doubly-stochastic matrices, has a unimodal $h^*$-vector, but when even small modifications are made to the polytope, the same property can be very difficult to prove. In this paper, we examine the $h^*$-vectors of a class of polytopes containing real doubly-stochastic symmetric matrices.
In this paper, we provide three different ways to partition the polytope of doubly substochastic matrices into subpolytopes via the prescribed row and column sums, the sum of all elements and the sub-defect respectively. Then we characterize the extreme points of each type of convex subpolytopes. The relations of the extreme points of the subpolytopes in the three partitions are also given.
We investigate convex polytopes of doubly stochastic matrices having special structures: symmetric, Hankel symmetric, centrosymmetric, and both symmetric and Hankel symmetric. We determine dimensions of these polytopes and classify their extreme points. We also determine a basis of the real vector spaces generated by permutation matrices with these special structures.
A two-step model for generating random polytopes is considered. For parameters $d$, $m$, and $p$, the first step is to generate a simple polytope $P$ whose facets are given by $m$ uniform random hyperplanes tangent to the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and the second step is to sample each vertex of $P$ independently with probability $p$ and let $Q$ be the convex hull of the sampled vertices. We establish results on how well $Q$ approximates the unit sphere in terms of $m$ and $p$ as well as asymptotics on the combinatorial complexity of $Q$ for certain regimes of $p$.
Motivated by the study of polytopes formed as the convex hull of permutation matrices and alternating sign matrices, we define several new families of polytopes as convex hulls of sign matrices, which are certain {0,1,-1}-matrices in bijection with semistandard Young tableaux. We investigate various properties of these polytopes, including their inequality descriptions, vertices, facets, and face lattices, as well as connections to alternating sign matrix polytopes and transportation polytopes.
We introduce the Tesler polytope Tes_n(a_1,a_2,...,a_n), whose integer points are the Tesler matrices of size n with nonnegative integer hook sums a_1,a_2,...,a_n. We show that Tes_n(a) is a flow polytope and therefore the number of Tesler matrices is counted by the type A_n Kostant partition function evaluated at (a_1,a_2,...,a_n,-a_1-...-a_n). We describe the faces of this polytope in terms of "Tesler tableaux" and characterize when the polytope is simple. We prove that the h-vector of Tes_n(a) when all a_i>0 is given by the Mahonian numbers and calculate the volume of Tes_n(1,1,...,1) to be…
Denote $\mathcal{A}$ as the set of all doubly substochastic $m \times n$ matrices and let $k$ be a positive integer. Let $\mathcal{A}_k$ be the set of all $1/k$-bounded doubly substochastic $m \times n$ matrices, i.e., $\mathcal{A}_k \triangleq \{E \in \mathcal{A}: e_{i,j} \in [0, 1/k], \forall i=1,2,\cdots,m, j = 1,2,\cdots, n\}$. Denote $\mathcal{B}_k$ as the set of all matrices in $\mathcal{A}_k$ whose entries are either $0$ or $1/k$. We prove that $\mathcal{A}_k$ is the convex hull of all matrices in $\mathcal{B}_k$.
This paper is devoted to the study of eigenvalue region of the doubly stochastic matrices which are also permutative, that is, each row of such a matrix is a permutation of any other row. We call these matrices as permutative doubly stochastic (PDS) matrices. A method is proposed to obtain symbolic representation of all PDS matrices of order $n$ by finding equivalence classes of permutationally similar symbolic PDS matrices. This is a hard problem in general as it boils down to finding all Latin squares of order $n.$ However, explicit symbolic representation of matrices in these classes are de…
We study the convex polytope of n x n stochastic matrices that define locally differentially private mechanisms. We first present invariance properties of the polytope and results reducing the number of constraints needed to define it. Our main results concern the extreme points of the polytope. In particular, we completely characterise these for matrices with 1, 2 or n non-zero columns.
We prove a determinantal identity concerning Schur functions for 2-staircase diagrams lambda=(ln+l',ln,l(n-1)+l',l(n-1),...,l+l',l,l',0). When l=1 and l'=0 these functions are related to the partition function of the 6-vertex model at the combinatorial point and hence to enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices. A consequence of our result is an identity concerning the doubly-refined enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices.
The asymptotic volume of the polytope of symmetric stochastic matrices can be determined by asymptotic enumeration techniques as in the case of the Birkhoff polytope. These methods can be extended to polytopes of symmetric stochastic matrices with given diagonal, if this diagonal varies not too wildly. To this end, the asymptotic number of symmetric matrices with natural entries, zero diagonal and varying row sums is determined and a third order correction factor to this is examined.
A symmetric doubly stochastic matrix A is said to be determined by its spectra if the only symmetric doubly stochastic matrices that are similar to A are of the form $P^TAP$ for some permutation matrix P. The problem of characterizing such matrices is considered here. An almost the same but a more difficult problem was proposed by [ M. Fang, A note on the inverse eigenvalue problem for symmetric doubly stochastic matrices, Lin. Alg. Appl., 432 (2010) 2925-2927] as follows: Characterize all n-tuples $λ= (1,λ_2,...,λ_n)$ such that up to a permutation similarity, there exists a unique symmetric d…
We present a multivariate generating function for all n x n nonnegative integral matrices with all row and column sums equal to a positive integer t, the so called semi-magic squares. As a consequence we obtain formulas for all coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of the polytope B_n of n x n doubly-stochastic matrices, also known as the Birkhoff polytope. In particular we derive formulas for the volumes of B_n and any of its faces.
Let D(m,n) be the set of all the integer points in the m-dilate of the Birkhoff polytope of doubly-stochastic n by n matrices. In this paper we find the sharp upper bound on the tropical determinant over the set D(m,n). We define a version of the tropical determinant where the maximum over all the transversals in a matrix is replaced with the minimum and then find the sharp lower bound on thus defined tropical determinant over D(m,n).
The n'th Birkhoff polytope $B_n$ is the set of all doubly stochastic $n \times n$ matrices, that is, those matrices with nonnegative real coefficients in which every row and column sums to one. A long-standing open problem is the determination of the relative volume of $B_n$. In [arXiv:math.CO/0202267] we introduced a method of calculating this volume and used it to compute $\vol B_9$. This note is an update on our progress: with the same program (but much longer computing time), we have now derived $\vol B_{10}$.
We study polytopes defined by inequalities of the form $\sum_{i\in I} z_{i}\leq 1$ for $I\subseteq [d]$ and nonnegative $z_i$ where the inequalities can be reordered into a matrix inequality involving a column-convex $\{0,1\}$-matrix. These generalize polytopes studied by Stanley, and the consecutive coordinate polytopes of Ayyer, Josuat-Vergès, and Ramassamy. We prove an integral equivalence between these polytopes and flow polytopes of directed acyclic graphs $G$ with a Hamiltonian path, which we call spinal graphs. We show that the volume of these flow polytopes is the number of extensions …
We define the alternating sign matrix polytope as the convex hull of nxn alternating sign matrices and prove its equivalent description in terms of inequalities. This is analogous to the well known result of Birkhoff and von Neumann that the convex hull of the permutation matrices equals the set of all nonnegative doubly stochastic matrices. We count the facets and vertices of the alternating sign matrix polytope and describe its projection to the permutohedron as well as give a complete characterization of its face lattice in terms of modified square ice configurations. Furthermore we prove t…
The n'th Birkhoff polytope is the set of all doubly stochastic n-by-n matrices, that is, those matrices with nonnegative real coefficients in which every row and column sums to one. A wide open problem concerns the volumes of these polytopes, which have been known for n up to 8. We present a new, complex-analytic way to compute the Ehrhart polynomial of the Birkhoff polytope, that is, the function counting the integer points in the dilated polytope. One reason to be interested in this counting function is that the leading term of the Ehrhart polynomial is--up to a trivial factor--the volume of…
Let m,n be positive integers. Define T(m,n) to be the transportation polytope consisting of the m x n non-negative real matrices whose rows each sum to 1 and whose columns each sum to m/n. The special case B(n)=T(n,n) is the much-studied Birkhoff-von Neumann polytope of doubly-stochastic matrices. Using a recent asymptotic enumeration of non-negative integer matrices (Canfield and McKay, 2007), we determine the asymptotic volume of T(m,n) as n goes to infinity, with m=m(n) such that m/n neither decreases nor increases too quickly. In particular, we give an asymptotic formula for the volume of …
Weighted sums of left and right hand Kronecker products of Integer Sequence Doubly Affine (ISDA) as well as Generalized Arithmetic Progression Doubly Affine (GAPDA) arrays are used to generate larger ISDA arrays of multiplicative order (compound squares) from pairs of smaller ones. In two dimensions we find general expressions for the eigenvalues (EVs) and singular values (SVs) of the larger arrays in terms of the EVs and SVs of their constituent matrices, leading to a simple result for the rank of these highly singular compound matrices. Since the critical property of the smaller constituent …
Clique-node and closed neighborhood matrices of circular interval graphs are circular matrices. The stable set polytope and the dominating set polytope on these graphs are therefore closely related to the set packing polytope and the set covering polyhedron on circular matrices. Eisenbrand et al. take advantage of this relationship to propose a complete linear description of the stable set polytope on circular interval graphs. In this paper we follow similar ideas to obtain a complete description of the dominating set polytope on the same class of graphs. As in the packing case, our results ar…
Let $Ω_n$ denote the class of $n \times n$ doubly stochastic matrices (each such matrix is entrywise nonnegative and every row and column sum is 1). We study the diagonals of matrices in $Ω_n$. The main question is: which $A \in Ω_n$ are such that the diagonals in $A$ that avoid the zeros of $A$ all have the same sum of their entries. We give a characterization of such matrices, and establish several classes of patterns of such matrices.
We compute the spectra of the adjacency matrices of the semi-regular polytopes. A few different techniques are employed: the most sophisticated, which relates the 1-skeleton of the polytope to a Cayley graph, is based on methods akin to those of Lovász and Babai ([L], [B]). It turns out that the algebraic degree of the eigenvalues is at most 5, achieved at two 3-dimensional solids.
Sinkhorn's alternative minimization algorithm applied to a positive $n\times n$ matrix converges to a doubly stochastic matrix. If the algorithm, applied to a $2\times 2$ matrix, converges in a finite number of iterations, then it converges in at most two iterations, and the structure of such matrices is determined.
We investigate the properties of uniform doubly stochastic random matrices, that is non-negative matrices conditioned to have their rows and columns sum to 1. The rescaled marginal distributions are shown to converge to exponential distributions and indeed even large sub-matrices of side-length $o(n^{1/2-ε})$ behave like independent exponentials. We determine the limiting empirical distribution of the singular values the the matrix. Finally the mixing time of the associated Markov chains is shown to be exactly 2 with high probability.
When doubly-affine matrices such as Latin and magic squares with a single non-zero eigenvalue are powered up they become constant matrices after a few steps. The process of compounding squares of orders m and n can then be used to generate an infinite series of such squares of orders mn. The Cayley-Hamilton theorem is used to understand this property, where their characteristic polynomials have just two terms.
In this paper, we study algorithmic questions concerning products of matrices and their consequences for recognition algorithms for polyhedra. The 1-product of matrices $S_1$, $S_2$ is a matrix whose columns are the concatenation of each column of $S_1$ with each column of $S_2$. The $k$-product generalizes the $1$-product, by taking as input two matrices $S_1, S_2$ together with $k-1$ special rows of each of those matrices, and outputting a certain composition of $S_1,S_2$. Our study is motivated by a close link between the 1-product of matrices and the Cartesian product of polytopes, and mor…
The Birkhoff polytope B(n) is the convex hull of all (n x n) permutation matrices, i.e., matrices where precisely one entry in each row and column is one, and zeros at all other places. This is a widely studied polytope with various applications throughout mathematics. In this paper we study combinatorial types L of faces of a Birkhoff polytope. The Birkhoff dimension bd(L) of L is the smallest n such that B(n) has a face with combinatorial type L. By a result of Billera and Sarangarajan, a combinatorial type L of a d-dimensional face appears in some B(k) for k less or equal to 2d, so bd(L) is…
We prove the equality of doubly refined enumerations of Alternating Sign Matrices and of Totally Symmetric Self-Complementary Plane Partitions using integral formulae originating from certain solutions of the quantum Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation.
The weighted projection of an alternating sign matrix (ASM) was introduced by Brualdi and Dahl (2018) as a step towards characterising a generalisation of Latin squares they introduced using alternating sign hypermatrices. If $z_n = (n,\dots,2,1)$, then the weighted projection of an ASM $A$ is equal to $z_n^TA$. Brualdi and Dahl proved that the weighted projection of an $n \times n$ ASM is majorized by the vector $z_n$, and conjectured that any positive integer vector majorized by $z_n$ is the weighted projection of some ASM. The main result of this paper presents a proof of this conjecture, v…
Let $A$ be a finite matrix with rational entries. We say that $A$ is {\it doubly image partition regular\/} if whenever the set ${\mathbb N}$ of positive integers is finitely coloured, there exists $\vec x$ such that the entries of $A\vec x$ are all the same colour (or {\it monochromatic\/}) and also, the entries of $\vec x$ are monochromatic. Which matrices are doubly image partition regular? More generally, we say that a pair of matrices $(A,B)$, where $A$ and $B$ have the same number of rows, is {\it doubly kernel partition regular\/} if whenever ${\mathbb N}$ is finitely coloured, there ex…
The set of bistochastic or doubly stochastic N by N matrices form a convex set called Birkhoff's polytope, that we describe in some detail. Our problem is to characterize the set of unistochastic matrices as a subset of Birkhoff's polytope. For N=3 we present fairly complete results. For N=4 partial results are obtained. An interesting difference between the two cases is that there is a ball of unistochastic matrices around the van der Waerden matrix for N=3, while this is not the case for N=4.
We prove that the permutations of $\{1,\dots, n\}$ having an increasing (resp., decreasing) subsequence of length $n-r$ index a subset of the set of all $r$th Kronecker powers of $n \times n$ permutation matrices which is a basis for the linear span of that set. Thanks to a known Schur--Weyl duality, this gives a new basis for the centralizer algebra of the partition algebra acting on the $r$th tensor power of a vector space. We give some related results on the set of doubly stochastic matrices in that algebra.
Let $X$ be a matrix sampled uniformly from the set of doubly stochastic matrices of size $n\times n$. We show that the empirical spectral distribution of the normalized matrix $\sqrt{n}(X-{\mathbf {E}}X)$ converges almost surely to the circular law. This confirms a conjecture of Chatterjee, Diaconis and Sly.
Zeilberger proved the Refined Alternating Sign Matrix Theorem, which gives a product formula, first conjectured by Mills, Robbins and Rumsey, for the number of alternating sign matrices with given top row. Stroganov proved an explicit formula for the number of alternating sign matrices with given top and bottom rows. Fischer and Romik considered a different kind of "doubly-refined enumeration" where one counts alternating sign matrices with given top two rows, and obtained partial results on this enumeration. In this paper we continue the study of the doubly-refined enumeration with respect to…
The 1-product of matrices $S_1 \in \mathbb{R}^{m_1 \times n_1}$ and $S_2 \in \mathbb{R}^{m_2 \times n_2}$ is the matrix in $\mathbb{R}^{(m_1+m_2) \times (n_1n_2)}$ whose columns are the concatenation of each column of $S_1$ with each column of $S_2$. Our main result is a polynomial time algorithm for the following problem: given a matrix $S$, is $S$ a 1-product, up to permutation of rows and columns? Our main motivation is a close link between the 1-product of matrices and the Cartesian product of polytopes, which goes through the concept of slack matrix. Determining whether a given matrix is …
We prove an asymptotic estimate for the number of mxn non-negative integer matrices (contingency tables) with prescribed row and column sums and, more generally, for the number of integer feasible flows in a network. Similarly, we estimate the volume of the polytope of mxn non-negative real matrices with prescribed row and column sums. Our estimates are solutions of convex optimization problems and hence can be computed efficiently. As a corollary, we show that if row sums R=(r_1, ..., r_m) and column sums C=(c_1, ..., c_n) with r_1 + ... + r_m =c_1 + ... +c_n =N are sufficiently far from cons…
We provide elementary proofs of several results concerning the possible outcomes arising from a fixed profile within the class of positional voting systems. Our arguments enable a simple and explicit construction of paradoxical profiles, and we also demonstrate how to choose weights that realize desirable results from a given profile. The analysis ultimately boils down to thinking about positional voting systems in terms of doubly stochastic matrices.
