A microscopic heterogeneous system under random influence is considered. The randomness enters the system at physical boundary of small scale obstacles as well as at the interior of the physical medium. This system is modeled by a stochastic partial differential equation defined on a domain perforated with small holes (obstacles or heterogeneities), together with random dynamical boundary conditions on the boundaries of these small holes.
A homogenized macroscopic model for this microscopic heterogeneous stochastic system is derived. This homogenized effective model is a new stochastic partial differential equation defined on a unified domain without small holes, with static boundary condition only. In fact, the random dynamical boundary conditions are homogenized out, but the impact of random forces on the small holes' boundaries is quantified as an extra stochastic term in the homogenized stochastic partial differential equation. Moreover, the validity of the homogenized model is justified by showing that the solutions of the microscopic model converge to those of the effective macroscopic model in probability distribution, as the size of small holes diminishes to zero.
We investigate the behaviour of solutions of a fractional semilinear partial differential equation that models the evolution of an interface in a random medium. We show a pinning result and apply it to the related homogenizing process.
In this paper, we focus on the Keller-Segel chemotaxis system in a random heterogeneous domain. We assume that the corresponding diffusion and chemotaxis coefficients are given by stationary ergodic random fields and apply stochastic two-scale convergence methods to derive the homogenized macroscopic equations. In establishing our results, we also derive a priori estimates for the Keller-Segel system that rely only on the boundedness of the coefficients; in particular, no differentiability assumption on the diffusion and chemotaxis coefficients for the chemotactic species is required. Finally,…
Motivated by rate-independent stress-strain hysteresis observed in filled rubber, this article considers a scalar viscoelastic model in which the constitutive law is random and varies on a lengthscale which is small relative to the overall size of the solid. Using stochastic two-scale convergence as introduced by Bourgeat, Mikelic and Wright, we obtain the homogenized limit of the evolution, and demonstrate that under certain hypotheses, the homogenized model exhibits hysteretic behaviour which persists under asymptotically slow loading. These results are illustrated by means of numerical simu…

Effective macroscopic dynamics of stochastic partial differential equations in perforated domains

We study stochastic homogenization of a quasilinear parabolic PDE with nonlinear microscopic Robin conditions on a perforated domain. The focus of our work lies on the underlying geometry that does not allow standard homogenization techniques to be applied directly. Instead we prove homogenization on a regularized geometry and demonstrate afterwards that the form of the homogenized equation is independent from the regularization. Then we pass to the regularization limit to obtain the anticipated limit equation. Furthermore, we show that Boolean models of Poisson point processes are covered by …
Corrector estimates constitute a key ingredient in the derivation of optimal convergence rates via two-scale expansion techniques in homogenization theory of random uniformly elliptic equations. The present work follows up - in terms of corrector estimates - on the recent work of Fischer and Neukamm (arXiv:1908.02273) which provides a quantitative stochastic homogenization theory of nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations under a spectral gap assumption. We establish optimal-order estimates (with respect to the scaling in the ratio between the microscopic and the macroscopic scale) for higher-o…
We study the stochastic homogenization and obtain a random fluctuation theory for semilinear elliptic equations with a rapidly varying random potential. To first order, the effective potential is the average potential and the nonlinearity is not affected by the randomness. We then study the limiting distribution of the properly scaled homogenization error (random fluctuations) in the space of square integrable functions, and prove that the limit is a Gaussian distribution characterized by the homogenized solution, the Green's function of the linearized equation around the homogenized solution,…
We study the homogenization of nonlinear, first-order equations with highly oscillatory mixing spatio-temporal dependence. It is shown in a variety of settings that the homogenized equations are stochastic Hamilton-Jacobi equations with deterministic, spatially homogenous Hamiltonians driven by white noise in time. The paper also contains proofs of some general regularity and path stability results for stochastic Hamilton-Jacobi equations, which are needed to prove some of the homogenization results and are of independent interest.
We consider nonlinear, uniformly elliptic equations with random, highly oscillating coefficients satisfying a finite range of dependence. We prove that homogenization and linearization commute in the sense that the linearized equation (linearized around an arbitrary solution) homogenizes to the linearization of the homogenized equation (linearized around the corresponding solution of the homogenized equation). We also obtain a quantitative estimate on the rate of this homogenization. These results lead to a better understanding of differences of solutions to the nonlinear equation, which is of…
We introduce a new method for studying stochastic homogenization of elliptic equations in nondivergence form. The main application is an algebraic error estimate, asserting that deviations from the homogenized limit are at most proportional to a power of the microscopic length scale, assuming a finite range of dependence. The results are new even for linear equations. The arguments rely on a new geometric quantity which is controlled in part by adapting elements of the regularity theory for the Monge-Ampère equation.
We prove a stochastic homogenization result for integral functionals defined on finite partitions assuming the surface tension to be stationary and possibly ergodic. We also consider the convergence of boundary value problems when we impose a boundary value just on part of the boundary. As a consequence, we show that if the homogenized surface tension is isotropic, then one can obtain it by a multi-cell problem where Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed only at the bottom and the top of the cube. We also show that this result fails in the general anisotropic case.
We develop a quantitative theory of stochastic homogenization for linear, uniformly parabolic equations with coefficients depending on space and time. Inspired by recent works in the elliptic setting, our analysis is focused on certain subadditive quantities derived from a variational interpretation of parabolic equations. These subadditive quantities are intimately connected to spatial averages of the fluxes and gradients of solutions. We implement a renormalization-type scheme to obtain an algebraic rate for their convergence, which is essentially a quantification of the weak convergence of …
We prove the existence of random dynamical systems and random attractors for a large class of locally monotone stochastic partial differential equations perturbed by additive Lévy noise. The main result is applicable to various types of SPDE such as stochastic Burgers type equations, stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equations, the stochastic 3D Leray-$α$ model, stochastic power law fluids, the stochastic Ladyzhenskaya model, stochastic Cahn-Hilliard type equations, stochastic Kuramoto-Sivashinsky type equations, stochastic porous media equations and stochastic $p$-Laplace equations.
A central question in numerical homogenization of partial differential equations with multiscale coefficients is the accurate computation of effective quantities, such as the homogenized coefficients. Computing homogenized coefficients requires solving local corrector problems followed by upscaling relevant local data. The most naive way of computing homogenized coefficients is by solving a local elliptic problem, which is known to suffer from the so-called resonance error dominating all other errors inherent in multiscale computations. A far more efficient modelling strategy, based on adding …
We establish the dual notions of scaling and saturation from geometric control theory in an infinite-dimensional setting. This generalization is applied to the low-mode control problem in a number of concrete nonlinear partial differential equations. We also develop applications concerning associated classes of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). In particular, we study the support properties of probability laws corresponding to these SPDEs as well as provide applications concerning the ergodic and mixing properties of invariant measures for these stochastic systems.
In this paper we study quantitative stochastic homogenization of a nonlinearly elastic composite material with a laminate microstructure. We prove that for deformations close to the set of rotations the homogenized stored energy function $W_{\rm hom}$ is $C^3$ and that $W_{\rm hom}$, the stress-tensor $DW_{\rm hom}$, and the tangent-moduli $D^2W_{\rm hom}$ can be represented with help of stochastic correctors. Furthermore, we study the error of an approximation of these quantities via representative volume elements. More precisely, we consider periodic RVEs obtained by periodizing the distribu…
We consider the homogenization problem for the stochastic porous-medium type equation $\p_{t} u^ε=Δf\left(T\left(\frac{x}{\ep}\right)\om,u^\ep\right)$, with a well-prepared initial datum, where $f(T(y)\om,u)$ is a stationary process, increasing in $u$, on a given probability space $(\Om, \mathcal{F}, μ)$ endowed with an ergodic dynamical system $\{T(y)\,:\,y\in\R^N\}$. Differently from the previous literature \cite{afs,fs}, here we do not assume $\Om$ compact. We first show that the weak solution $u^\ep$ satisfies a kinetic formulation of the equation, then we exploit the theory of "stochastic…
We derive optimal-order homogenization rates for random nonlinear elliptic PDEs with monotone nonlinearity in the uniformly elliptic case. More precisely, for a random monotone operator on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with stationary law (i.e. spatially homogeneous statistics) and fast decay of correlations on scales larger than the microscale $\varepsilon>0$, we establish homogenization error estimates of the order $\varepsilon$ in case $d\geq 3$, respectively of the order $\varepsilon |\log \varepsilon|^{1/2}$ in case $d=2$. Previous results in nonlinear stochastic homogenization have been limited to a sm…
We prove stochastic homogenization for integral functionals defined on Sobolev spaces, where the stationary, ergodic integrand satisfies a degenerate growth condition of the form \begin{equation*} c|ξA(ω,x)|^p\leq f(ω,x,ξ)\leq |ξA(ω,x)|^p+Λ(ω,x) \end{equation*} for some $p\in (1,+\infty)$ and with a stationary and ergodic diagonal matrix $A$ such that its norm and the norm of its inverse satisfy minimal integrability assumptions. We also consider the convergence when Dirichlet boundary conditions or an obstacle condition are imposed. Assuming the strict convexity and differentiability of $f$ w…
Under general conditions we show that the solution of a stochastic parabolic partial differential equation of the form \[ \partial_t u = \mathrm{div} (A \nabla u) + f(t,x, u) + g_i (t,x,u) \dot{w}^i_t \] is almost surely Hölder continuous in both space and time variables.
We obtain the first quantitative stochastic homogenization result for reaction-diffusion equations, for ignition reactions in dimensions $d\le 3$ that either have finite ranges of dependence or are close enough to such reactions, and for solutions with initial data that approximate characteristic functions of general convex sets. We show algebraic rate of convergence of these solutions to their homogenized limits, which are (discontinuous) viscosity solutions of certain related Hamilton-Jacobi equations.
We study the discrete-to-continuum limit of ferromagnetic spin systems when the lattice spacing tends to zero. We assume that the atoms are part of a (maybe) non-periodic lattice close to a flat set in a lower dimensional space, typically a plate in three dimensions. Scaling the particle positions by a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$ we perform a $Γ$-convergence analysis of properly rescaled interfacial-type energies. We show that, up to subsequences, the energies converge to a surface integral defined on partitions of the flat space. In the second part of the paper we address the issue of sto…
We study function-valued solutions of a class of stochastic partial differential equations, involving operators with polynomially bounded coefficients. We consider semilinear equations under suitable parabolicity hypotheses. We provide conditions on the initial data and on the stochastic terms, namely, on the associated spectral measure, so that these mild solutions exist uniquely in suitably chosen functional classes.
We are concerned with the homogenization of second-order linear elliptic equations with random coefficient fields. For symmetric coefficient fields with only short-range correlations, quantified through a logarithmic Sobolev inequality for the ensemble, we prove that when measured in weak spatial norms, the solution to the homogenized equation provides a higher-order approximation of the solution to the equation with oscillating coefficients. In the case of nonsymmetric coefficient fields, we provide a higher-order approximation (in weak spatial norms) of the solution to the equation with osci…
We prove stochastic homogenization for reaction-advection-diffusion equations with random space-time-dependent KPP reactions with temporal correlations that are decaying in an appropriate sense. We show that the limiting homogenized dynamic has the simple form of spreading with some deterministic direction-dependent speeds from the support of the initial datum. We obtain analogous results for G-equations with random flame speeds and incompressible background advections. Important ingredients in our proofs are a non-autonomous subadditive theorem and the principle of virtual linearity for KPP r…
In this paper we establish compactness results of multiscale and very weak multiscale type for sequences bounded in $L^{2}(0,T;H_{0}^{1}(Ω))$, fulfilling a certain condition. We apply the results in the homogenization of the parabolic partial differential equation $\varepsilon ^{p}\partial_{t}u_{\varepsilon }\left( x,t\right) -\nabla \cdot \left( a\left( x/\varepsilon ,x/\varepsilon ^{2},t/\varepsilon^{q},t/\varepsilon ^{r}\right) \nabla u_{\varepsilon }\left( x,t\right)\right) = f\left( x,t\right) $, where $0<p<q<r$. The homogenization result reveals two special phenomena, namely that the hom…
