We introduce and study a class of algebraic stacks with finite inertia in positive and mixed characteristic, which we call tame algebraic stacks. They include tame Deligne-Mumford stacks, and are arguably better behaved than general Deligne-Mumford stacks. We also give a complete characterization of finite flat linearly reductive schemes over an arbitrary base. Our main result is that tame algebraic stacks are étale locally quotient by actions of linearly reductive finite group schemes.
In a subsequent paper we will show that tame algebraic stacks admit a good theory of stable maps.
This paper is a continuation of our earlier development of a theory of tame Artin stacks. Our main goal here is the construction of an appropriate analogue of Kontsevich's space of stable maps in the case where the target is a tame Artin stack. When the target is a tame Deligne--Mumford stack, the theory was developed by Abramovich and Vistoli, and found a number of applications. The theory for arbitrary tame Artin stacks developed here is very similar, but it is necessary to overcome a number of technical hurdles and to generalize a few questions of foundation.
Given an algebraic stack, we compare its Nori fundamental group with that of its coarse moduli space. We also study conditions under which the stack can be uniformized by an algebraic space.
We prove that the Hodge-de Rham spectral sequence for smooth proper tame Artin stacks in characteristic p (as defined by Abramovich, Olsson, and Vistoli) which lift mod p^2 degenerates. We push the result to the coarse spaces of such stacks, thereby obtaining a degeneracy result for schemes which are etale locally the quotient of a smooth scheme by a finite linearly reductive group scheme.
We define Gromov-Witten classes and invariants of smooth proper tame Deligne-Mumford stacks of finite presentation over a Dedekind domain. We prove that they are deformation invariants and verify the fundamental axioms. For a smooth proper tame Deligne-Mumford stack over a Dedekind domain, we prove that the invariants of fibers in different characteristics are the same. We show that genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants define a potential which satisfies the WDVV equation and we deduce from this a reconstruction theorem for genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants in arbitrary characteristic.
We give an algorithm for removing stackiness from smooth, tame Artin stacks with abelian stabilisers by repeatedly applying stacky blow-ups. The construction works over a general base and is functorial with respect to base change and compositions with gerbes and smooth, stabiliser preserving maps. As applications, we indicate how the result can be used for destackifying general Deligne-Mumford stacks in characteristic zero, and to obtain a weak factorisation theorem for such stacks. Over an arbitrary field, the method can be used to obtain a functorial algorithm for desingularising varieties w…
Let $X$ be a quasi-compact algebraic stack with quasi-finite and separated diagonal. We classify the thick $\otimes$-ideals of $\mathsf{D}_{\mathrm{qc}}(X)^c$. If $X$ is tame, then we also compute the Balmer spectrum of the $\otimes$-triangulated category of perfect complexes on $X$. In addition, if $X$ admits a coarse space $X_{\mathrm{cs}}$, then we prove that the Balmer spectra of $X$ and $X_{\mathrm{cs}}$ are naturally isomorphic.
We compare two notions of tameness: one introduced in [CEPT96] for actions of affine group schemes and one introduced in [AOV08] for stacks. From this comparison, we deduce results on the structure of inertia groups in these tame situations.
We generalize the Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for semistable coherent sheaves on smooth projective surfaces to smooth Deligne-Mumford surfaces. We work over positive characteristic $p>0$ and generalize Langer's method to smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks. As applications we obtain the Bogomolov inequality for semistable coherent sheaves on a Deligne-Mumford surface in characteristic zero, and the Bogomolov inequality for semistable sheaves on a root stack over a smooth surface which is equivalent to the Bogomolov inequality for the rational parabolic sheaves on a smooth surface $S$. In a joint a…
Let X be a smooth and tame stack with finite inertia. We prove that there is a functorial sequence of blow-ups with smooth centers after which the stabilizers of X become abelian. Using this result, we can extend the destackification results of the first author to any smooth tame stack. We give applications to resolution of tame quotient singularities, prime-to-l alterations of singularities and weak factorization of Deligne-Mumford stacks. We also extend the abelianization result to infinite stabilizers in characteristic zero, generalizing earlier work of Reichstein-Youssin.
The object of the present is a proof of the existence of functorial resolution of tame quotient singularities for quasi-projective varieties over algebraically closed fields.
We study the ramification theory for actions involving group schemes, focusing on the tame ramification. We consider the notion of tame quotient stack introduced in [AOV] and the one of tame action introduced in [CEPT]. We establish a local Slice theorem for unramified actions and after proving some interesting lifting properties for linearly reductive group schemes, we establish a Slice theorem for actions by commutative group schemes inducing tame quotient stacks. Roughly speaking, we show that these actions are induced from an action of an extension of the inertia group on a finitely presen…
We prove that cohomology and base change holds for algebraic stacks, generalizing work of Brochard in the tame case. We also show that Hom-spaces on algebraic stacks are represented by abelian cones, generalizing results of Grothendieck, Brochard, Olsson, Lieblich, and Roth--Starr. To accomplish all of this, we prove that a wide class of Ext-functors in algebraic geometry are coherent (in the sense of M. Auslander).
We show that every smooth projective curve over a finite field k admits a finite tame morphism to the projective line over k. Furthermore, we construct a curve with no such map when k is an infinite perfect field of characteristic two. Our work leads to a refinement of the tame Belyi theorem in positive characteristic, building on results of Saïdi, Sugiyama-Yasuda, and Anbar-Tutdere.
The purpose of the present paper is to give an effective version of the noncritical $p$-tame Belyi theorem. That is to say, we compute explicitly an upper bound of the minimal degree of tamely ramified Belyi maps in positive characteristic which are unramified at a prescribed finite set of points.
In this paper we prove that over algebraically closed field $K$ of positive characteristic $\neq 2$ every automorphism of the group of origin-preserving automorphisms of the polynomial algebra $K[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$ ($n>3$) which fixes every diagonal matrix preserves, up to composition with a linear inner automorphism, every tame automorphism.
We prove that the dg category of perfect complexes on a smooth, proper Deligne-Mumford stack over a field of characteristic zero is geometric in the sense of Orlov, and in particular smooth and proper. On the level of triangulated categories, this means that the derived category of perfect complexes embeds as an admissible subcategory into the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth, projective variety. The same holds for a smooth, projective, tame Artin stack over an arbitrary field.
We prove some finiteness theorems for the Picard functor of an algebraic stack, in the spirit of SGA 6, exp. XII and XIII. In particular, we give a stacky version of Raynaud's relative representability theorem, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of the torsion component of the Picard functor, and for the finite generation of the Neron-Severi groups or of the Picard group itself. We give some examples and applications. In an appendix, we prove the semicontinuity theorem for a (non necessarily tame) algebraic stack.
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a tame proper Deligne-Mumford stack of the form $[M/G]$ where $M$ is a scheme and $G$ is an algebraic group. We prove that the stack $\mathcal{K}_{g,n}(\mathcal{X},d)$ of twisted stable maps is a quotient stack and can be embedded into a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack. When $G$ is finite, we give a more precise construction of $\mathcal{K}_{g,n}(\mathcal{X},d)$ using Hilbert schemes and admissible $G$-covers.
We prove that the homotopy algebraic K-theory of tame quasi-DM stacks satisfies cdh-descent. We apply this descent result to prove that if X is a Noetherian tame quasi-DM stack and i < -dim(X), then K_i(X)[1/n] = 0 (resp. K_i(X, Z/n) = 0) provided that n is nilpotent on X (resp. is invertible on X). Our descent and vanishing results apply more generally to certain Artin stacks whose stabilizers are extensions of finite group schemes by group schemes of multiplicative type.
Let X be a smooth variety over an algebraically closed field k of positive characteristic. We define and study a general notion of regular singularities for stratified bundles (i.e. O_X-coherent D_X-modules) on X without relying on resolution of singularities. The main result is that the category of regular singular stratified bundles with finite monodromy is equivalent to the category of continuous representations of the tame fundamental group on finite dimensional k-vector spaces. As a corollary we obtain that a stratified bundle with finite monodromy is regular singular if and only if it is…
We generalize the classical Chevalley-Shephard-Todd theorem to the case of finite linearly reductive group schemes. As an application, we prove that every scheme X which is etale locally the quotient of a smooth scheme by a finite linearly reductive group scheme is the coarse space of a smooth tame Artin stack (as defined by Abramovich, Olsson, and Vistoli) whose stacky structure is supported on the singular locus of X.
In casual discussion, a stack is often described as a variety (the coarse space) together with stabilizer groups attached to some of its subvarieties. However, this description does not uniquely specify the stack. Our main result shows that for a large class of stacks one typically encounters, this description does indeed characterize them. Moreover, we prove that each such stack can be described in terms of two simple procedures applied iteratively to its coarse space: canonical stack constructions and root stack constructions. More precisely, if $\mathcal X$ is a smooth separated tame Delign…
We classify stacky curves in characteristic $p > 0$ with cyclic stabilizers of order $p$ using higher ramification data. This approach replaces the local root stack structure of a tame stacky curve, similar to the local structure of a complex orbifold curve, with a more sensitive structure called an Artin-Schreier root stack, allowing us to incorporate this ramification data directly into the stack. As an application, we compute dimensions of Riemann-Roch spaces for some examples of stacky curves in positive characteristic and suggest a program for computing spaces of modular forms in this set…
In positive characteristic, there exist counterexamples to the statement corresponding to Batyrev's theorem concerning the McKay correspondence. In this paper, we give another computation of the counterexamples by using stringy-point count for some sequences of quotient varieties. There is a proof of the Serre-Bhagava's mass formula, which is important formula in the number theory, from the computation of stringy-point count of a quotient variety associated to a representation of symmetric group. Our computation of the stringy-point count in this paper is regarded as a variation of this proof …
Let $X$ be a generic curve of genus $g$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p\geq 0$. We show that for $n$ sufficiently large there exists a tame rational map $f:X\to \PP^1_k$ with monodromy group $A_n$. This generalizes a result of Magaard--Völklein to positive characteristic.
We prove the existence of the dualizing functor for a separated morphism of algebraic stacks with affine diagonal; then we explicitly develop duality for compact Deligne-Mumford stacks focusing in particular on the morphism from a stack to its coarse moduli space and on representable morphisms. We explicitly compute the dualizing complex for a smooth stack over an algebraically closed field and prove that Serre duality holds for smooth compact Deligne-Mumford stacks in its usual form. We prove also that a proper Cohen-Macaulay stack has a dualizing sheaf and it is an invertible sheaf when it i…
We study the failure of the Lipman-Zariski conjecture in positive characteristic. For rational double points, the conjecture holds true except for a short finite list of exceptions. For log canonical surface singularities, the conjecture continues to hold with the same list of exceptions under an additional tameness hypothesis. In particular, among rational double points in characteristic $p \ge 7$ Lipman's counterexample is the only one, and the conjecture holds for all tame $F$-pure normal surface singularities.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m}, k)$ be a strictly local normal $k$-domain of positive characteristic and $P$ be a prime divisor on $X=\text{Spec } R$. We study the Galois category of finite covers over $X$ that are at worst tamely ramified over $P$ in the sense of Grothendieck--Murre. Assuming that $(X,P)$ is a purely $F$-regular pair, our main result is that every Galois cover $f \: Y \to X$ in that Galois category satisfies that $\bigl(f^{-1}(P)\bigr)_{\text{red}}$ is a prime divisor. We shall explain why this should be thought as a (partial) generalization of a classical theorem due to S.S.~Abhyankar…
We introduce a notion of Gieseker stability for coherent sheaves on tame Deligne-Mumford stacks with projective moduli scheme and some chosen generating sheaf on the stack in the sense of Olsson and Starr \cite{MR2007396}. We prove that this stability condition is open, and pure dimensional semistable sheaves form a bounded family. We explicitly construct the moduli stack of semistable sheaves as a finite type global quotient, and study the moduli scheme of stable sheaves and its natural compactification in the same spirit as the seminal paper of Simpson \cite{MR1307297}. With this general mac…
Let $X$ be a quasi-compact and quasi-separated scheme. There are two fundamental and pervasive facts about the unbounded derived category of $X$: (1) $\mathsf{D}_{\mathrm{qc}}(X)$ is compactly generated by perfect complexes and (2) if $X$ is noetherian or has affine diagonal, then the functor $Ψ_X \colon \mathsf{D}(\mathsf{QCoh}(X)) \to \mathsf{D}_{\mathrm{qc}}(X)$ is an equivalence. Our main results are that for algebraic stacks in positive characteristic, the assertions (1) and (2) are typically false.
The moduli stacks of Calabi-Yau varieties are known to enjoy several hyperbolicity properties. The best results have so far been proven using sophisticated analytic tools such as complex Hodge theory. Although the situation is very different in positive characteristic (e.g. the moduli stack of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension at least 2 contains rational curves), we explain in this note how one can prove many hyperbolicity results by reduction to positive characteristic, relying ultimately on the nonabelian Hodge theory in positive characteristic developed by Ogus and Volog…
Given a logarithmic $1$-form on the snc locus of a log canonical surface pair $(X, D)$ over a perfect field of characteristic $p \ge 7$, we show that it extends with at worst logarithmic poles to any resolution of singularities. We also prove the analogous statement for regular differential forms, under an additional tameness hypothesis. In addition, residue and restriction sequences for tamely dlt pairs are established. We give a number of examples showing that our results are sharp in the surface case, and that they fail in higher dimensions. On the other hand, our techniques yield a new pro…
In this paper, the singular Ringel-Hall algebra for a tame quiver is introduced and shown to be isomorphic to the positive part of the quantum extended Kac-Moody algebra. A PBW basis is constructed and a new class of perverse sheaves is shown to have purity property. This allows to construct the canonical bases of the positive part of the quantum extended Kac-Moody algebra. As an application, the existence of Hall polynomials for tame quiver algebras is proved.
We study the geometry of equicharacteristic partial affine flag varieties associated to tamely ramified groups $G$ in characteristics $p>0$ dividing the order of the fundamental group $π_1(G_{\text{der}})$. We obtain that most Schubert varieties are not normal and provide an explicit criterion for when this happens. Apart from this, we show, on the one hand, that loop groups of semisimple groups satisfying $p \mid \lvert π_1(G_{\text{der}})\rvert$ are not reduced, and on the other hand, that their integral realizations are ind-flat. Our methods allow us to classify all tamely ramified Pappas-Z…
Stratifications and iterative differential equations are analogues in positive characteristic of complex linear differential equations. There are few explicit examples of stratifications. The main goal of this paper is to construct stratifications on projective or affine curves in positive characteristic and to determine the possibilities for their differential Galois groups. For the related "differential Abhyankar conjecture" we present partial answers, supplementing the literature. The tools for the construction of regular singular stratifications and the study of their differential Galois g…
Suppose $G$ is a finite group and $p$ is either a prime number or $0$. For $p$ positive, we say that $G$ is weakly tame at $p$ if $G$ has no non-trivial normal $p$-subgroups. By convention we say that every finite group is weakly tame at $0$. Now suppose that $G$ is a finite group which is weakly tame at the residue characteristic of a discrete valuation ring $R$. Our main result shows that the essential dimension of $G$ over the fraction field $K$ of $R$ is at least as large as the essential dimension of $G$ over the residue field $k$. We also prove a more general statement of this type for a…
