In this paper we study noncommutative domains D_f in B(H)^n, generated by positive regular free holomorphic functions f, where B(H) is the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space H.
In this paper, we introduce a parametric pseudodifferential calculus on noncommutative $n$-tori which is a natural nest for resolvents of elliptic pseudodifferential operators. Unlike in some previous approaches to parametric pseudodifferential calculi, our parametric pseudodifferential calculus contains resolvents of elliptic pseudodifferential operators that need not be differential operators. As an application we show that complex powers of positive elliptic pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative $n$-tori are pseudodifferential operators. This confirms a claim of Fathi-Ghorbanpour-K…
In this paper we initiate the study of composition operators on the noncommutative Hardy space $H^2_{\bf ball}$. Several classical results about composition operators (boundedness, norm estimates, spectral properties, compactness, similarity) have free analogues in our noncommutative multivariable setting. The most prominent feature of this paper is the interaction between the noncommutative analytic function theory in the unit ball of $B(\cH)^n$, the operator algebras generated by the left creation operators on the full Fock space with $n$ generators, and the classical complex function theory…
We continue the study of the relationship between Dixmier traces and noncommutative residues initiated by A. Connes. The utility of the residue approach to Dixmier traces is shown by a characterisation of the noncommutative integral in Connes' noncommutative geometry (for a wide class of Dixmier traces) as a generalised limit of vector states associated to the eigenvectors of a compact operator (or an unbounded operator with compact resolvent), i.e. as a generalised quantum limit. Using the characterisation, a criteria involving the eigenvectors of a compact operator and the projections of a v…
In this paper we solve several problems concerning joint similarity to n-tuples of operators in noncommutative varieties in $[B(\cH)^n]_1$ associated with positive regular free holomorphic functions in $n$ noncommuting variables and with sets of noncommutative polynomials in $n$ indeterminates, where $B(\cH)$ is the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $\cH$. In particular, if $f=X_1+...+X_n$ and $\cP=\{0\}$, the elements of the corresponding variety can be seen as noncommutative multivariable analogues of Agler's $m$-hypercontractions.
In this paper, we complete the study of mapping properties for a family of operators evaluating the difference between differentiation operators and conditional expectations acting on noncommutative $L_{p}$-spaces. To be more precise, we establish the weak type $(1,1)$ and $(L_{\infty},\mathrm{BMO})$ estimates of this difference. Consequently, in conjunction with interpolation and duality, we obtain all strong type $(p,p)$ estimates. This allows us to obtain a quick application to noncommutative differential transforms for averaging operators.
We extend some inequalities for normal matrices and positive linear maps related to the Russo-Dye theorem. The results cover the case of some positive linear maps on a von Neumann algebra mapping any nonzero operator to an unbounded operator.
We extend the noncommutative residue of M. Wodzicki on compactly supported classical pseudo-differential operators of order $-d$ and generalise A. Connes' trace theorem, which states that the residue can be calculated using a singular trace on compact operators. Contrary to the role of the noncommutative residue for the classical pseudo-differential operators, a corollary is that the pseudo-differential operators of order $-d$ do not have a `unique' trace; pseudo-differential operators can be non-measurable in Connes' sense. Other corollaries are given clarifying the role of Dixmier traces in …
In this paper we develop a theory of free holomorphic functions on noncommutative Reinhardt domains generated by positive regular free holomorphic functions in n noncommuting variables. We show that the free biholomorphic classification of these domains is the same as the classification, up to unital completely isometric isomorphisms, of the corresponding noncommutative domain algebras.
In this paper we analyze the Banach *-algebra of time-frequency shifts with absolutely summable coefficients. We prove a noncommutative version of the Wiener lemma. We also construct a faithful tracial state on this algebra which implies the algebra contains no compact operators. As a corollary we obtain a special case of the Heil-Ramanathan-Topiwala conjecture regarding linear independence of finitely many time-frequency shifts of one $L^2$ function.
We show that the constrained characteristic function is a complete unitary invariant for J-constrained completely non-coisometric (c.n.c.) row contractions, where J is a WOT-closed two-sided ideal of the noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebra. We provide a model for this class of row contractions in terms of the constrained characteristic functions. In particular, we obtain a model theory for q-commuting c.n.c. row contractions.
In this paper, we study the hyperbolic geometry of noncommutative balls generated by the joint operator radius $ω_ρ$, $ρ\in (0,\infty]$, for $n$-tuples of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space. In particular, $ω_1$ is the operator norm, $ω_2$ is the joint numerical radius, and $ω_\infty$ is the joint spectral radius. We provide mapping theorems, von Neumann inequalities, and Schwarz type lemmas for free holomorphic functions on noncommutative balls, with respect to the hyperbolic metric $δ_ρ$, the Carath\' eodory metric $d_K$, and the joint operator radius $ω_ρ$.
In [11], employing the technique of noncommutative interpolation, a maximal ergodic theorem in noncommutative Lp-spaces, 1 < p < infinity, was established and, among other things, corresponding maximal ergodic inequalities and individual ergodic theorems were derived. In this article, we derive maximal ergodic inequalities in noncommutative Lp-spaces directly from [25] and apply them to prove corresponding individual and Besicovitch weighted ergodic theorems. Then we extend these results to noncommutative fully symmetric Banach spaces with Fatou property and non-trivial Boyd indices, in partic…
In 2008, J. Parcet showed the $(1,1)$ weak-boundedness of Calderón-Zygmund operators acting on functions taking values in a von Neumann algebra. We propose a simplified version of his proof using the same tools : Cuculescu's projections and a pseudo-localisation theorem. This will unable us to recover the $L_p$-boundedness of Calderón-Zygmund operators with Hilbert valued kernels acting on operator valued functions for $1 < p < \infty$ and an $L_p$-pseudo-localisation result of P. Hytönen.
We initiate the study of a class of noncommutative domains of n-tuples of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space, which is generated by certain positivity conditions on polynomials in n noncommutative indeterminates. We obtain Fatou type results, functional calculi, and a model theory for n-tuples of operators in these domains. The main role in this study is played by a class of noncommutative Berezin transforms which is introduced in this paper. Our results extend to noncommutative varieties.
In this paper we consider several problems of joint similarity to tuples of bounded linear operators in noncommutative polydomains and varieties associated with sets of noncommutative polynomials. We obtain analogues of classical results such as Rota's model theorem for operators with spectral radius less than one, Sz.-Nagy characterization of operators similar to isometries (or unitary operators), and the refinement obtained by Foia\c s and by de Branges and Rovnyak for strongly stable contractions. We also provide analogues of these results in the context of joint similarity of commuting tup…
We classify operator systems $S\subseteq \mathcal B(H)$ that act on finite dimensional Hilbert spaces by making use of the noncommutative Choquet boundary. S is said to be {\em reduced} when its boundary ideal is 0. In the category of operator systems, that property functions as semisimplicity does in the category of complex Banach algebras. We construct explicit examples of reduced operator systems using sequences of "parameterizing maps" $Γ_k: \mathbb C^r\to \mathcal B(H_k)$, $k=1,..., N$. We show that every reduced operator system is isomorphic to one of these, and that two sequences give r…
We initiate the study of weighted multi-Toeplitz operators associated with noncommutative regular domains in B(H)^n. These operators are acting on the full Fock space with n generators and have as symbols free pluriharmonic functions. Several classical results from complex analysis concerning harmonic functions have analogues in our noncommutative setting. In particular, we show that the bounded free pluriharmonic functions are precisely those which are noncommutative Berezin transforms of weighted multi-Toeplitz operators, and solve the Dirichlet extension problem in this setting. Using nonco…
Some identities for noncommutative perspectives of operator monotone functions in Hilbert spaces aregiven. Applications for weighted operator geometric mean and relative operator entropy are also provided.
We prove a Boyd-type interpolation result for noncommutative maximal operators of restricted weak type. Our result positively answers an open question posed recently by Bekjan, Chen and Osekowski. As a special case, we find a restricted weak type version of the noncommutative Marcinkiewicz interpolation theorem, due to Junge and Xu, with interpolation constant of optimal order.
We obtain a noncommutative multivariable analogue of Louhichi and Olofsson characterization of Toeplitz operators with harmonic symbols on the weighted Bergman space $A_m({\bf D})$, as well as Eschmeier and Langendorfer extension to the unit ball of ${\bf C}^n$. All our results are proved in the more general setting of noncommutative poly-hyperballs ${\bf D_n^m}(H)$, ${\bf n,m}\in {\bf N}^k$, and are used to characterize the bounded free $k$-pluriharmonic functions with operator coefficients on poly-hyperballs and to solve the associated Dirichlet extension problem. In particular, the results …
This paper is an introduction to the hyperbolic geometry of noncommutative polyballs B_n of bounded linear operators on Hilbert spaces. We use the theory of free pluriharmonic functions on polyballs and noncommutative Poisson kernels on tensor products of full Fock spaces to define hyperbolic type metrics on B_n, study their properties, and obtain hyperbolic versions of Schwarz-Pick lemma for free holomorphic functions on polyballs. As a consequence, the polyballs can be viewed as noncommutative hyperbolic spaces. When specialized to the operatorial polydisk D_k, our hyperbolic metric is compl…
We prove the operator space Grothendieck inequality for bilinear forms on subspaces of noncommutative $L_p$-spaces with $2<p<\infty$. One of our results states that given a map $u: E\to F^*$, where $E, F\subset L_p(M)$ ($2<p<\infty$, $M$ being a von Neumann algebra), $u$ is completely bounded iff $u$ factors through a direct sum of a $p$-column space and a $p$-row space. We also obtain several operator space versions of the classical little Grothendieck inequality for maps defined on a subspace of a noncommutative $L_p$-space ($2<p<\infty$) with values in a $q$-column space for every $q\in [p'…
Let $\cX$ be the unital *-algebra generated by the unilateral shift operator. It is shown that for any nonnegative operator $X\in \cX$ there is an element $Y\in \cX$ such that $X=Y^*Y$.
In this paper, we study free k-pluriharmonic functions on noncommutative regular polyballs. These regular polyballs have universal operator models consisting of left creation operators acting on tensor products of full Fock spaces. We introduce and determine the class of kmulti- Toeplitz operators acting on these tensor products and show that the bounded free k-pluriharmonic functions on regular polyballs are precisely the noncommutative Berezin transforms of k-multi-Toeplitz operators. The Dirichlet extension problem on regular polyballs is also solved. It is proved that a free k-pluriharmoni…
The bispectral problem is motivated by an effort to understand and extend a remarkable phenomenon in Fourier analysis on the real line: the operator of time-and-band limiting is an integral operator admitting a second-order differential operator with a simple spectrum in its commutator. In this article, we discuss a noncommutative version of the bispectral problem, obtained by allowing all objects in the original formulation to be matrix-valued. Deep attention is given to bispectral algebras and their presentations as a tool to get information about bispectral triples.
This paper is an attempt to find large classes of noncommutative multivariable functions $g:Ω\subset [B(\cH)^n]_1^-\to B(\cH)^n$ for which a reasonable operator model theory and dilation theory can be developed for the noncommutative domain $g(Ω)$. In other words, we want to transfer the free analogue of Nagy-Foias theory from the unit ball $[B(\cH)^n]_1$ to other noncommutative domains, using appropriate maps.
We obtain intertwining dilation theorems for noncommutative regular domains D_f and noncommutative varieties V_J of n-tuples of operators, which generalize Sarason and Sz.-Nagy--Foias commutant lifting theorem for commuting contractions. We present several applications including a new proof for the commutant lifting theorem for pure elements in the domain D_f (resp. variety V_J) as well as a Schur type representation for the unit ball of the Hardy algebra associated with the variety V_J. We provide Ando type dilations and inequalities for bi-domains D_f \times D_g and bi-varieties V_J \times V…
We develop a dilation theory for row contractions subject to constraints determined by sets of noncommutative polynomials. Under natural conditions on the constraints, we have uniqueness for the minimal dilation. A characteristic function is associated with any (constrained) row contraction. For pure constrained row contraction, we show that the characteristic function is a complete unitary invariant and provide a model. We also show that the curvature invariant and Euler characteristic asssociated with a Hilbert module generated by an arbitrary (resp. commuting) row contraction can be express…
We introduce a notion of a noncommutative function defined on a domain of $d$-tuples of bounded operators on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. Inverse and implicit function theorems in this setting are established. When these operatorial noncommutative functions are suitably continuous in the strong operator topology, a noncommutative dilation-theoretic construction is used to show that the assumptions on their derivatives may be relaxed from boundedness below to merely injectivity.
In this paper, we obtain the desired noncommutative maximal inequalities of the truncated Calderón-Zygmund operators of non-convolution type acting on operator-valued $L_p$-functions for all $1<p<\infty$, answering a question left open in the previous work \cite{HLX}.
Given a function $f: (a,b) \rightarrow \mathbb{R},$ Löwner's theorem states $f$ is monotone when extended to self-adjoint matrices via the functional calculus, if and only if $f$ extends to a self-map of the complex upper half plane. In recent years, several generalizations of Löwner's theorem have been proven in several variables. We use the relaxed Agler, McCarthy and Young theorem on locally matrix monotone functions in several commuting variables to generalize results in the noncommutative case. Specifically, we show that a real free function defined over an operator system must analytical…
In this paper, we establish the quantitative mean ergodic theorems for two subclasses of power bounded operators on a fixed noncommutative $L_p$-space with $1<p<\infty$, which mainly concerns power bounded invertible operators and Lamperti contractions. Our approach to the quantitative ergodic theorems is the noncommutative square function inequalities. The establishment of the latter involves several new ingredients such as the almost orthogonality and Calderón-Zygmund arguments for non-smooth kernels from semi-commutative harmonic analysis, the extension properties of the operators under con…
These notes have the intent to introduce the study of the nonlinear aspects of operator space theory. We investigate some results on the nonlinear theory of Banach spaces which remain valid in the noncommutative case. In particular, we show that Ribe's theorem has a complete analog to preduals of von Neumann algebras and introduce the concept of the Lipschitz free operator space of an operator space. We use those to prove results about injective von Neumann algebras, Pisier's operator space OH, and the existence of complete linear isometric embeddings between operator spaces.
We study the operator space UMD property, introduced by Pisier in the context of noncommutative vector-valued Lp-spaces. It is unknown whether the property is independent of p in this setting. We prove that for 1<p,q<\infty, the Schatten q-classes Sq are OUMDp. The proof relies on properties of the Haagerup tensor product and complex interpolation. Using ultraproduct techniques, we extend this result to a large class of noncommutative Lq-spaces. Namely, we show that if M is a QWEP von Neumann algebra (i.e., a quotient of a C^*-algebra with Lance's weak expectation property) equipped with a nor…
The fundamental solution and the heat semigroup of the Vladimirov-Taibleson operator on constant-order noncommutative Vilenkin groups are obtained, together with some estimates on the associated heat kernel. We also show the existence of a fundamental solution for the "Vladimirov Laplacian" on the $p$-adic Heisenberg group and the $p$-adic Engel group, and discuss possible extensions of our results to more general homogeneous operators on graded $p$-adic Lie groups.
Jordan operator algebras are norm-closed spaces of operators on a Hilbert space with $a^2 \in A$ for all $a \in A$. We study noncommutative topology, noncommutative peak sets and peak interpolation, and hereditary subalgebras of Jordan operator algebras. We show that Jordan operator algebras present perhaps the most general setting for a `full' noncommutative topology in the C*-algebraic sense of Akemann, L. G. Brown, Pedersen, etc, and as modified for not necessarily selfadjoint algebras by the authors with Read, Hay and other coauthors. Our breakthrough relies in part on establishing several…
In this paper, we study the boundedness theory for maximal Calderón-Zygmund operators acting on noncommutative $L_p$-spaces. Our first result is a criterion for the weak type $(1,1)$ estimate of noncommutative maximal Calderón-Zygmund operators; as an application, we obtain the weak type $(1,1)$ estimates of operator-valued maximal singular integrals of convolution type under proper {regularity} conditions. These are the {\it first} noncommutative maximal inequalities for families of linear operators that can not be reduced to positive ones. For homogeneous singular integrals, the strong type …
We factorize the Dirac operator on the Connes-Landi 4-sphere in unbounded KK-theory. We show that a family of Dirac operators along the orbits of the torus action defines an unbounded Kasparov module, while the Dirac operator on the principal orbit space -an open quadrant in the 2-sphere- defines a half-closed chain. We show that the tensor sum of these two operators coincides up to unitary equivalence with the Dirac operator on the Connes-Landi sphere and prove that this tensor sum is an unbounded representative of the interior Kasparov product in bivariant K-theory. We also generalize our re…
An operatorial polynomial polyhedron is a set of the form $$B_δ(\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H}))=\{X\in \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})^d : \Vertδ(X)\Vert<1\}$$ where $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ denotes the space of bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, and $δ$ is a matrix of polynomials in $d$ noncommuting variables. These sets appear throughout the literature on noncommutative function theory. While much of what has been written involves matricial polynomial polyhedra, there do exist $δ$ such that the associated $B_δ(\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H}))$ is non-empty but contains no matrix poi…
In this note we extend several integral inequalities to the context of noncommutative Vilenkin groups. We prove some sharp weak and strong type estimates for the Hardy operator and the Hardy-Littlewood-P{ó}lya operator on constant-order noncommutative Vilenkin groups. In particular for graded $\K$-Lie groups, where $\K$ is a non-archimedean local field, we additionally provide some functional inequalities, like the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev unequality and the Stein-Weiss inequality, linking some classes of homogeneous pseudo-differential operators, like the Vladimirov-Taibleson operator and the…
We establish distributional estimates for noncommutative martingales, in the sense of decreasing rearrangements of the spectra of unbounded operators, which generalises the study of distributions of random variables. Our results include distributional versions of the noncommutative Stein, dual Doob, martingale transform and Burkholder-Gundy inequalities. Our proof relies upon new and powerful extrapolation theorems. As an application, we obtain some new martingale inequalities in symmetric quasi-Banach operator spaces and some interesting endpoint estimates. Our main approach demonstrates a me…
We study quantum dynamical semigroups generated by noncommutative unbounded elliptic operators which can be written as Lindblad type unbounded generators. Under appropriate conditions, we first construct the minimal quantum dynamical semigroups for the generators and then use Chebotarev and Fagnola's sufficient conditions for conservativity to show that the semigroups are conservative.
This paper concerns free analytic maps on noncommutative domains. These maps are free analogs of classical holomorphic functions in several complex variables, and are defined in terms of noncommuting variables amongst which there are no relations - they are free variables. Free analytic maps include vector-valued polynomials in free (noncommuting) variables and form a canonical class of mappings from one noncommutative domain D in say g variables to another noncommutative domain D' in g' variables. Motivated by determining the possibilities for mapping a nonconvex noncommutative domain to a co…
We define and study a noncommutative Fourier transform on every homogeneous complex bounded domain. We then give an application in noncommutative differential geometry by defining noncommutative Baumslag-Solitar tori.
