We obtain a noncommutative multivariable analogue of Louhichi and Olofsson characterization of Toeplitz operators with harmonic symbols on the weighted Bergman space $A_m({\bf D})$, as well as Eschmeier and Langendorfer extension to the unit ball of ${\bf C}^n$. All our results are proved in the more general setting of noncommutative poly-hyperballs ${\bf D_n^m}(H)$, ${\bf n,m}\in {\bf N}^k$, and are used to characterize the bounded free $k$-pluriharmonic functions with operator coefficients on poly-hyperballs and to solve the associated Dirichlet extension problem. In particular, the results hold for the reproducing kernel Hilbert space with kernel

κ_{\bf m}(z,w):=\prod_{i=1}^k \frac{1}{(1-\bar z_i w_i)^{m_i}},\qquad z,w\in {\bf D}^k,

where $m_i\geq 1$. This includes the Hardy space, the Bergman space, and the weighted Bergman space over the polydisk.
Motivated by Barr{\'ı}a-Halmos's \cite[Question 19]{barria1982asymptotic} and Halmos's \cite[Problem 237]{Halmos1978A}, we explore projections in Toeplitz algebra on the Hardy space. We show that the product of two Toeplitz (Hankel) operators is a projection if and only if it is the projection onto one of the invariant subspaces of the shift (backward shift) operator. As a consequence one obtains new proofs of criterion for Toeplitz operators and Hankel operators to be partial isometries. Furthermore, we completely characterize when the self-commutator of a Toeplitz operator is a projection. T…
We study subnormal Toeplitz operators on the vector-valued Hardy space of the unit circle, along with an appropriate reformulation of P.R. Halmos's Problem 5: Which subnormal block Toeplitz operators are either normal or analytic? We extend and prove Abrahamse's Theorem to the case of matrix-valued symbols; that is, we show that every subnormal block Toeplitz operator with bounded type symbol (i.e., a quotient of two analytic functions), whose co-analytic part has a "coprime decomposition," is normal or analytic. We also prove that the coprime decomposition condition is essential. Finally, we …
Let $H[X]$ and $H[Y]$ be abstract Hardy spaces built upon Banach function spaces $X$ and $Y$ over the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$. We prove an analogue of the Brown-Halmos theorem for Toeplitz operators $T_a$ acting from $H[X]$ to $H[Y]$ under the only assumption that the space $X$ is separable and the Riesz projection $P$ is bounded on the space $Y$. We specify our results to the case of variable Lebesgue spaces $X=L^{p(\cdot)}$ and $Y=L^{q(\cdot)}$ and to the case of Lorentz spaces $X=Y=L^{p,q}(w)$, $1<p<\infty$, $1\le q<\infty$ with Muckenhoupt weights $w\in A_p(\mathbb{T})$.
The paper gives the background for Toeplitz $T_a$ and Hankel $H_a$ operators acting between distinct Hardy type spaces over the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$. We characterize possible symbols of such operators and prove general versions of Brown-Halmos and Nehari theorems. The lower bound for measure of noncomactness of Toeplitz operator is also found. Our approach allows Hardy spaces associated with arbitrary rearrangement invariant spaces, but part of the results is new even for the classical case of $H^p$ spaces.
In this paper we are concerned with hyponormality and subnormality of block Toeplitz operators acting on the vector-valued Hardy space $H^2_{\mathbb{C}^n}$ of the unit circle. Firstly, we establish a tractable and explicit criterion on the hyponormality of block Toeplitz operators having bounded type symbols via the triangularization theorem for compressions of the shift operator. Secondly, we consider the gap between hyponormality and subnormality for block Toeplitz operators. This is closely related to Halmos's Problem 5: Is every subnormal Toeplitz operator either normal or analytic? We sho…
In this paper we generalize the classical theorems of Brown and Halmos about algebraic properties of Toeplitz operators to Bergman spaces over the unit ball in several complex variables. A key result, which is of independent interest, is the characterization of summable functions $u$ on the unit ball whose Berezin transform can be written as a finite sum $\sum_{j}f_j\,\bar{g}_j$ with all $f_j, g_j$ being holomorphic. In particular, we show that such a function must be pluriharmonic if it is sufficiently smooth and bounded. We also settle an open question about $\mathcal{M}$-harmonic functions.…
We show that an infinite Toeplitz+Hankel matrix $T(φ) + H(ψ)$ generates a bounded (compact) operator on $\ell^p(\mathbb{N}_0)$ with $1\leq p\leq \infty$ if and only if both $T(φ)$ and $H(ψ)$ are bounded (compact). We also give analogous characterizations for Toeplitz+Hankel operators acting on the reflexive Hardy spaces. In both cases, we provide an intrinsic characterization of bounded operators of Toeplitz+Hankel form similar to the Brown-Halmos theorem. In addition, we establish estimates for the norm and the essential norm of such operators.
Let $m \geq 1$ be an integer and let $H_m(\mathbb B)$ be the analytic functional Hilbert space on the unit ball $\mathbb B \subset \mathbb C^n$ given by the reproducing kernel $K_m(z,w) = (1 - \langle z,w \rangle)^{-m}$. We prove that Toeplitz operators with pluriharmonic symbol on $H_m(\mathbb B)$ can be characterized by an algebraic identity which extends the classical Brown-Halmos characterization of Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space of the unit disc as well as corresponding results of Louhichi and Olofsson for Toeplitz operators with harmonic symbol on weighted Bergman spaces of the di…
In this paper we introduce and study the class of weighted multi-Toeplitz operators associated with noncommutative polydomains ${\bf D_f^m}$, ${\bf m}:=(m_1,\ldots, m_k)\in {\bf N}^k$, generated by $k$-tuples ${\bf f}:=(f_1,\ldots, f_k)$ of positive regular free holomorphic functions in a neighborhood of the origin. These operators are acting on the tensor product $F^2(H_{n_1})\otimes \cdots \otimes F^2(H_{n_k})$ of full Fock spaces with $n_i$ generators or, equivalently, they can be viewed as multi-Toeplitz operators acting on tensor products of weighted full Fock spaces. For a large class of…
When is the collection of $\mathsf S$-Toeplitz operators with respect to a tuple of commuting bounded operators $\mathsf S= (S_1, S_2, \ldots , S_{d-1}, P)$, which has the symmetrized polydisc as a spectral set, non-trivial? The answer is in terms of powers of $P$ as well as in terms of a unitary extension. En route, Brown-Halmos relations are investigated. A commutant lifting theorem is established. Finally, we establish a general result connecting the $C^*$-algebra generated by the commutant of $\mathsf S$ and the commutant of its unitary extension $\mathsf R$.
We initiate a study of asymptotic Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ (over the unit polydisc $\mathbb{D}^n$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$). We also study the Toeplitz operators in the polydisc setting. Our main results on Toeplitz and asymptotic Toeplitz operators can be stated as follows: Let $T_{z_i}$ denote the multiplication operator on $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ by the $i^{th}$ coordinate function $z_i$, $i =1, \ldots, n$, and let $T$ be a bounded linear operator on $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$. Then the following hold: (i) $T$ is a Toeplitz operator (that is, $T = P_{H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)} M_φ|_{…
A Toeplitz operator $T_φ$, $φ\in L^\infty(\mathbb{T}^n)$, is a partial isometry if and only if there exist inner functions $φ_1, φ_2 \in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$ such that $φ_1$ and $φ_2$ depends on different variables and $φ= \barφ_1 φ_2$. In particular, for $n=1$, along with new proof, this recovers a classical theorem of Brown and Douglas. \noindent We also prove that a partially isometric Toeplitz operator is hyponormal if and only if the corresponding symbol is an inner function in $H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$. Moreover, partially isometric Toeplitz operators are always power partial isometry …
This paper deals with subnormality of Toeplitz operators with matrix-valued symbols and, in particular, with an appropriate reformulation of Halmos's Problem 5: Which subnormal Toeplitz operators with matrix-valued symbols are either normal or analytic? In 1976, M. Abrahamse showed that if $φ\in L^\infty$ is such that $φ$ or $\overlineφ$ is of bounded type and if $T_φ$ is subnormal, then $T_φ$ is either normal or analytic. In this paper we establish a matrix-valued version of Abrahamse's Theorem and then apply this result to solve the following Toeplitz completion problem: Find the unspecified…
The symmetrized bidisc has been a rich field of holomorphic function theory and operator theory. A certain well-known reproducing kernel Hilbert space of holomorphic functions on the symmetrized bidisc resembles the Hardy space of the unit disc in several aspects. This space is known as the Hardy space of the symmetrized bidisc. We introduce the study of those operators on the Hardy space of the symmetrized bidisc that are analogous to Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space of the unit disc. More explicitly, we first study multiplication operators on a bigger space (an $L^2$-space) and then stu…
In this paper, we study matrix functions of bounded type from the viewpoint of describing an interplay between function theory and operator theory. \ We first establish a criterion on the coprime-ness of two singular inner functions and obtain several properties of the Douglas-Shapiro-Shields factorizations of matrix functions of bounded type. \ We propose a new notion of tensored-scalar singularity, and then answer questions on Hankel operators with matrix-valued bounded type symbols. \ We also examine an interpolation problem related to a certain functional equation on matrix functions of bo…
