Given an abelian, CM extension K of any totally real number field k, we consider two conjectures `of Stark type'. The `Integrality Conjecture' concerns the image of a p-adic map `\mathfrak{s}_{K/k,S}' determined by the minus-part of the S-truncated equivariant L-function for K/k at s=1. It is connected to the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture of Burns and Flach. The `Congruence Conjecture' says that \mathfrak{s}_{K/k,S} gives an explicit reciprocity law for the element predicted by the corresponding Rubin-Stark Conjecture for K^+/k. We study the general properties of these conjectures and prove one or both of them under various hypotheses, notably when p does not divide [K:k], when k=Q or when K is absolutely abelian.
The `Congruence Conjecture' was developed by the second author in a previous paper. It provides a conjectural explicit reciprocity law for a certain element associated to an abelian extension of a totally real number field whose existence is predicted by earlier conjectures of Rubin and Stark. The first aim of the present paper is to design and apply techniques to investigate the Congruence Conjecture numerically. We then present complete verifications of the conjecture in 48 varied cases with real quadratic base fields.
In this article, we study the p-ordinary Iwasawa theory of the (conjectural) Rubin-Stark elements defined over abelian extensions of a CM field F and develop a rank-g Euler/Kolyvagin system machinery (where 2g is the degree of F), refining and generalizing Perrin-Riou's theory and the author's prior work. This has several important arithmetic consequences: Using the recent results of Hida and Hsieh on the CM main conjectures, we prove a natural extension of a theorem of Yager for the CM field F, where we relate the Rubin-Stark elements to the several-variable Katz p-adic L-function. Furthermor…
Let $K$ be a totally real number field of degree $r$. Let $K_{\infty}$ denote the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-extension of $K$ and let $L_{\infty}$ be a finite extension of $K_{\infty}$, abelian over $K$. The goal of this paper is to compare the characteristic ideal of the $χ$-quotient of the projective limit of the narrow class groups to the $χ$-quotient of the projective limit of the $r$-th exterior power of totally positive units modulo a subgroup of Rubin-Stark units, for some $\overline{\mathbb{Q}_{2}}$-irreducible characters $χ$ of $\mathrm{Gal}(L_{\infty}/K_{\infty})$.
Let $K$ be a totally real number field of degree $r=[K:\mathbb{Q}]$ and let $p$ be an odd rational prime. Let $K_{\infty}$ denote the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-extension of $K$ and let $L_{\infty}$ be a finite extension of $K_{\infty}$, abelian over $K$. In this article, we extend results of \cite{Kazim109} relating characteristic ideal of the $χ$-quotient of the projective limit of the ideal class groups to the $χ$-quotient of the projective limit of the $r$-th exterior power of units modulo Rubin-Stark units, in the non semi-simple case, for some $\overline{\mathbb{Q}_{p}}$-irreductible ch…
Our first goal in this note is to explain that a weak form of Perrin-Riou's conjecture on the non-triviality of Beilinson-Kato classes follows as an easy consequence of the Iwasawa main conjectures, and deduce its refined versions in the supersingular case from this fact and a variety of Gross-Zagier formulae. Our second goal is to set up a conceptual framework in the context of $Λ$-adic Kolyvagin systems to treat analogues of Perrin-Riou's conjectures for higher motives of higher rank. We apply this general discussion in order to establish a link between Heegner points on a general class of C…
We prove that a refinement of Stark's Conjecture formulated by Rubin is true up to primes dividing the order of the Galois group, for finite, abelian extensions of function fields over finite fields. We also show that in the case of constant field extensions a statement stronger than Rubin's holds true.
We develop a detailed arithmetic theory related to special values at arbitrary integers of the Artin $L$-series of linear characters. To do so we define canonical generalized Stark elements of arbitrary `rank' and `weight', thereby extending the classical theory of Rubin-Stark elements. We then formulate an extension to arbitrary weight of the refined version of the Rubin-Stark Conjecture that we studied in an earlier article and also show that generalized Stark elements constitute a $p$-adic family by formulating precise conjectural congruence relations between elements of differing weights. …
In this paper we construct, using Stark elements of Rubin [Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble) 46 (1996), no. 1, 33-62], Kolyvagin systems for certain modified Selmer structures (that are adjusted to have core rank one in the sense of [Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 168 (2004), no. 799] and prove a Gras-type conjecture, relating these Kolyvagin systems to appropriate ideal class groups, refining the results of Rubin [J. Reine Angew. Math. 425 (1992), 141-154].
We prove the existence of a canonical `higher Kolyvagin derivative' homomorphism between the modules of higher rank Euler systems and higher rank Kolyvagin systems, as has been conjectured to exist by Mazur and Rubin. This homomorphism exists in the setting of $p$-adic representations that are free with respect to the action of a Gorenstein order $\mathcal{R}$ and, in particular, implies that higher rank Euler systems control the $\mathcal{R}$-module structures of Selmer modules attached to the representation. We give a first application of this theory by considering the (conjectural) Euler sy…
We establish formulae of Stark type for the Stickelberger elements in the function field setting. Our result generalizes a work of Hayes and a conjecture of Gross. It is used to deduce a $p$-adic version of Rubin-Stark Conjecture and Burns Conjecture.
The goal of this article is two-fold: First, to prove a (two-variable) main conjecture for a CM field $F$ without assuming the $p$-ordinary hypothesis of Katz, making use of what we call the Rubin-Stark $\mathcal{L}$-restricted Kolyvagin systems which is constructed out of the conjectural Rubin-Stark Euler system of rank $g$. (We are also able to obtain weaker unconditional results in this direction.) Second objective is to prove the Park-Shahabi plus/minus main conjecture for a CM elliptic curve $E$ defined over a general totally real field again using (a twist of the) Rubin-Stark Kolyvagin s…
We formulate a conjecture which generalizes Darmon's "refined class number formula". We discuss relations between our conjecture and the equivariant leading term conjecture of Burns. As an application, we give another proof of the "except 2-part" of Darmon's conjecture, which was first proved by Mazur and Rubin.
In this paper, we construct (many) Kolyvagin systems out of Stickelberger elements, utilizing ideas borrowed from our previous work on Kolyvagin systems of Rubin-Stark elements. We show how to apply this construction to prove results on the odd parts of the ideal class groups of CM fields which are abelian over a totally real field, and deduce the main conjecture of Iwasawa theory for totally real fields (for totally odd characters). Although the main results of this paper have already been established by Wiles, our approach provides another example (which slightly differs from the case of Sta…
We define a "period ring-valued beta function" and give a reciprocity law on its special values. The proof is based on some results of Rohrlich and Coleman concerning Fermat curves. We also have the following application. Stark's conjecture implies that the exponential of the derivatives at $s=0$ of partial zeta functions are algebraic numbers which satisfy a reciprocity law under certain conditions. It follows from Euler's formulas and properties of cyclotomic units when the base field is the rational number field. In this paper, we provide an alternative (and partial) proof by using the reci…
We describe a refinement of the general theory of higher rank Euler, Kolyvagin and Stark systems in the setting of the multiplicative group over arbitrary number fields. We use the refined theory to prove new results concerning the Galois structure of ideal class groups and the validity of both the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture and of the `refined class number formula' that has been conjectured by Mazur and Rubin and by Sano. In contrast to previous work in this direction, these results require no hypotheses on the decomposition behaviour of places that are intended to rule out the ex…
The purpose of this paper is to formulate and study a common refinement of a version of Stark's conjecture and its $p$-adic analogue, in terms of Fontaine's $p$-adic period ring and $p$-adic Hodge theory. We construct period-ring-valued functions under a generalization of Yoshida's conjecture on the transcendental parts of CM-periods. Then we conjecture a reciprocity law on their special values concerning the absolute Frobenius action. We show that our conjecture implies a part of Stark's conjecture when the base field is an arbitrary real field and the splitting place is its real place. It al…
In this paper, we present a unifying approach to the general theory of abelian Stark conjectures. To do so we define natural notions of `zeta element', of `Weil-étale cohomology complexes' and of `integral Selmer groups' for the multiplicative group $\mathbb{G}_m$ over finite abelian extensions of number fields. We then conjecture a precise connection between zeta elements and Weil-étale cohomology complexes, we show this conjecture is equivalent to a special case of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture and we give an unconditional proof of the analogous statement for global function fie…
We give a systematic method of providing numerical evidence for higher order Stark-type conjectures such as (in chronological order) Stark's conjecture over $\mathbb{Q}$, Rubin's conjecture, Popescu's conjecture, and a conjecture due to Burns that constitutes a generalization of Brumer's classical conjecture on annihilation of class groups. Our approach is general and could be used for any abelian extension of number fields, independent of the signature and type of places (finite or infinite) that split completely in the extension. We then employ our techniques in the situation where $K$ is a …
Stark-Heegner points are conjectural substitutes for Heegner points when the imaginary quadratic field of the theory of complex multiplication is replaced by a real quadratic field $K$. They are constructed analytically as local points on elliptic curves with multiplicative reduction at a prime $p$ that remains inert in $K$, but are conjectured to be rational over ring class fields of $K$ and to satisfy a Shimura reciprocity law describing the action of $G_K$ on them. The main conjectures of \cite{darmon-hpxh} predict that any linear combination of Stark-Heegner points weighted by the values o…
Let $H/F$ be a finite abelian extension of number fields with $F$ totally real and $H$ a CM field. Let $S$ and $T$ be disjoint finite sets of places of $F$ satisfying the standard conditions. The Brumer-Stark conjecture states that the Stickelberger element $Θ^{H/F}_{S, T}$ annihilates the $T$-smoothed class group $\text{Cl}^T(H)$. We prove this conjecture away from $p=2$, that is, after tensoring with $\mathbf{Z}[1/2]$. We prove a stronger version of this result conjectured by Kurihara that gives a formula for the 0th Fitting ideal of the minus part of the Pontryagin dual of $\text{Cl}^T(H) \…
We state the Brumer-Stark conjecture and motivate it from two perspectives. Stark's perspective arose in his attempts to generalize the classical Dirichlet class number formula for the leading term of the Dedekind zeta function at $s=1$ (equivalently, $s=0$). Brumer's perspective arose by generalizing Stickelberger's work regarding the factorization of Gauss sums and the annihilation of class groups of cyclotomic fields. These viewpoints were synthesized by Tate, who stated the Brumer-Stark conjecture in its current form. The conjecture considers a totally real field $F$ and a finite abelian C…
We introduce the notion of Shintani data, which axiomatizes algebraic aspects of Shintani zeta functions. We develop the general theory of Shintani data, and show that the order of vanishing part of Gross's conjecture follows from the existence of a Shintani datum. Recently, Dasgupta and Spiess proved the order of vanishing part of Gross's conjecture under certain conditions. We give an alternative proof of their result by constructing a certain Shintani datum. We also propose a refinement of Gross's leading term conjecture by using the theory of Shintani data. Out conjecture gives a conjectur…
We use Euler systems to prove the Gras conjecture for groups generated by Stark units in global function fields. The techniques applied here are classical and go back to Thaine, Kolyvagin and Rubin. We obtain our Euler systems from the torsion points of sign-normalized Drinfel'd modules.
In this paper we set up a general Kolyvagin system machinery for Euler systems of rank r (in the sense of Perrin-Riou) associated to a large class of Galois representations, building on our previous work on Kolyvagin systems of Rubin-Stark units and generalizing the results of Kato, Rubin and Perrin-Riou. Our machinery produces a bound on the size of the classical Selmer group attached to a Galoys representation T (that satisfies certain technical hypotheses) in terms of a certain r \times r determinant; a bound which remarkably goes hand in hand with Bloch-Kato conjectures. At the end, we pre…
We conjecture that special elements associated with rank-one motives are obtained $p$-adically from Rubin-Stark elements by means of a precise `higher-rank Soulé twist' construction. We show this conjecture incorporates a variety of known results and existing predictions and also gives rise to a concrete strategy for proving the equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture for rank-one motives. We then use this approach to obtain new evidence in support of the equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture in the setting of CM abelian varieties.
This is essentially the author's thesis submited to The University of Chicago (May 1997). I prove the validity of Tamagawa number conjecture of Bloch-Kato for certain Hecke characters. I study the exponential map and local Tamagawa number for all odd primes (both ordinary and supersingular), using Kato's explicit reciprocity law for one dimensional Lubin-Tate formal group. I also study p-part of Shafarevich-Tate group for motives associated to Hecke characters, using Rubin's Main Conjecture in Iwasawa theory. Interestingly a congruence property between p-adic periods of elliptic curve and weig…
We introduce a new ideal {\mathfrak D} of the p-adic Galois group-ring associated to a real abelian field and a related ideal {\mathfrak J} for imaginary abelian fields. Both result from an equivariant, Kummer-type pairing applied to Stark units in a Z_p-tower of abelian fields and {\mathfrak J} is linked by explicit reciprocity to a third ideal {\mathfrak S} studied more generally in a previous work. This leads to a new and unifying framework for the Iwasawa Theory of such fields including a real analogue of Stickelberger's Theorem, links with certain Fitting ideals and Λ-torsion submodules, …
Let K be an abelian extension of a totally real number field k, K^+ its maximal real subfield and G=Gal(K/k). We have previously used twisted zeta-functions to define a meromorphic CG-valued function Phi_{K/k}(s) in a way similar to the use of partial zeta-functions to define the better-known function Theta_{K/k}(s). For each prime number p, we now show how the value Phi_{K/k}(0) combines with a p-adic regulator of semilocal units to define a natural Z_pG-submodule of Q_pG which we denote {frak S}_{K/k}. If p is odd and splits in k, our main theorem states that {frak S}_{K/k} is (at least) con…
