We use Euler systems to prove the Gras conjecture for groups generated by Stark units in global function fields. The techniques applied here are classical and go back to Thaine, Kolyvagin and Rubin. We obtain our Euler systems from the torsion points of sign-normalized Drinfel'd modules.
In this paper we extend methods of Rubin to prove the Gras conjecture for abelian extensions of a given imaginary quadratic field k and prime numbers p which divide the number of roots of unity in k.
Based on results obtained in a companion paper [MSRI preprint 1997-002], we construct groups of special $S$--units for function fields of characteristic $p>0$, and show that they satisfy Gras--type Conjectures. We use these results in order to give a new proof of Chinburg's $Ω_3$--Conjecture on the Galois module structure of the group of $S$--units, for cyclic extensions of prime degree of function fields.
We prove a distribution-theoretic conjecture of Robert Coleman, thereby also obtaining an explicit description of the complete set of Euler systems for the multiplicative group over Q.
We provide a new interpretation of the Mazur-Tate Conjecture and then use it to obtain the first (unconditional) theoretical evidence in support of the conjecture for elliptic curves of strictly positive rank.
We formulate an Iwasawa main conjecture for a higher rank Euler system for a general motive. We prove "one half" of the main conjecture under mild hypotheses. We also formulate a conjecture on "Darmon-type derivatives" of Euler systems and give an application to the Tamagawa number conjecture. Lastly, we specialize our general framework to the setting of Heegner points and give a natural interpretation of the Heegner point main conjecture in terms of rank two Euler systems.
Mazur and Tate proposed a conjecture which compares the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with the order of vanishing of Mazur-Tate elements, which are analogues of Stickelberger elements. Under some relatively mild assumptions, we prove this conjecture. Our strategy of the proof is to study divisibility of certain derivatives of Kato's Euler system.
Darmon's conjecture on a relation between cyclotomic units over real quadratic fields and certain algebraic regulators was recently solved by Mazur and Rubin by using their theory of Kolyvagin systems. In this paper, we formulate a "non-explicit" version of Darmon's conjecture for Euler systems defined for general $p$-adic representations, and prove it. In the process of the proof, we introduce a notion of "algebraic Kolyvagin systems", and develop their properties.
The goal of this notice is to present a proof of Bachet's conjecture based exclusively on the fundamental theorem of arithmetic. The novelty of this proof consists in its introduction of a partial order on rational integers through the unique factorization property. In general, the proofs of Bachet's conjecture by Lagrange - Euler's method assume necessary the use of infinite descent. In the proposed proof we do not assume the existence of a "minimal solution", but rather we show the existence of the desired solution through an algorithmic method.
As a natural generalization of the Euler-Mascheroni constant $γ$, Y. Ihara introduced the Euler-Kronecker constant $γ_K$ attached to any number field $K$. In this paper, we prove that a certain bound on $γ_K$ in a tower of number fields $\mathcal{K}$ implies the generalized Brauer-Siegel conjecture for $\mathcal{K}$ as formulated by Tsfasman and Vlǎduţ. Moreover, we use known bounds on $γ_K$ for cyclotomic fields to obtain a finer estimate for the number of zeros of the Dedekind zeta-function $ζ_K(s)$ in the critical strip.
We provide a simple and efficient numerical criterion to verify the Iwasawa main conjecture and the indivisibility of derived Kato's Euler systems for modular forms of weight two at any good prime under mild assumptions. In the ordinary case, the criterion works for all members of a Hida family once and for all. The key ingredient is the explicit computation of the integral image of the derived Kato's Euler systems under the dual exponential map. We provide explicit new examples at the end. This work does not appeal to the Eisenstein congruence method at all.
By using various expansions of the parametric digamma function and the method of residue computations, we study three variants of the linear Euler sums, related Hoffman's double $t$-values and Kaneko-Tsumura's double $T$-values, and establish several symmetric extensions of the Kaneko-Tsumura conjecture. Some special cases are discussed in detail to determine the coefficients of involved mathematical constants in the evaluations. In particular, it can be found that several general convolution identities on the classical Bernoulli numbers and Genocchi numbers are required in this study, and the…
We examine the sums $S(k,\,n)$ of the $k-$th powers of the $ϕ(n)$ integers $α_1<α_2<\cdots<α_{ϕ(n)}$ less than and prime to $n$ (Euler set) and prove a formula (new) for $S(3,\,n)$. If $n$ equals a prime $p$, we prove a theorem showing a connection of $S(3,\,p)$ with Artin's conjectural constant for primitive roots and with other functions involving primes.
Let $k$ be a real abelian number field and $p$ an odd prime not dividing $[k:\mathbb{Q}]$. For a natural number $d$, let $E_d$ denote the group of units of $k$ congruent to $1$ modulo $d$, $C_d$ the subgroup of $d$-circular units of $E_d$, and $\mathfrak{C}(d)$ the ray class group of modulus $d$. Let $ρ$ be an irreducible character of $G=\mathrm{Gal}(k/\mathbb{Q})$ over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and $e_ρ \in \mathbb{Z}_p[G]$ the corresponding idempotent. We show that if the ramification index of $p$ in $k$ is less than $p-1$, then $|e_ρ \mathrm{Syl}_p(E_d/C_d) | = |e_ρ \mathrm{Syl}_p(\mathfrak{C}_d)|$ wh…
Euler systems are certain compatible families of cohomology classes, which play a key role in studying the arithmetic of Galois representations. We briefly survey the known Euler systems, and recall a standard conjecture of Perrin-Riou predicting what kind of Euler system one should expect for a general Galois representation. Surprisingly, several recent constructions of Euler systems do not seem to fit the predictions of this conjecture, and we formulate a more general conjecture which explains these extra objects. The novel aspect of our conjecture is that it predicts that there should often…
For Dirichlet $L$-functions in $\mathbb{F}_q [T]$ we obtain a hybrid Euler-Hadamard product formula. We make a splitting conjecture, namely that the $2k$-th moment of the Dirichlet $L$-functions at $\frac{1}{2}$, averaged over primitive characters of modulus $R$, is asymptotic to (as $\mathrm{deg} R \longrightarrow \infty$) the $2k$-th moment of the Euler product multiplied by the $2k$-th moment of the Hadamard product. We explicitly obtain the main term of the $2k$-th moment of the Euler product, and we conjecture via random matrix theory the main term of the $2k$-th moment of the Hadamard pr…
We study Euler systems for $\mathbb{G}_m$ over a number field $k$. Motivated by a distribution-theoretic idea of Coleman, we formulate a conjecture regarding the existence of such systems that is elementary to state and yet strictly finer than Kato's equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture for Dirichlet $L$-series at $s=0$. To investigate the conjecture, we develop an abstract theory of `Euler limits' and, in particular, prove the existence of canonical `restriction' and `localisation' sequences in this theory. By using this approach we obtain a variety of new results, ranging from a proof, mod…
We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system \[\begin{cases} n=a_{1}+a_{2}+\cdots+a_{s-1}, a_{1}a_{2}\cdots a_{s-1}(a_{1}+a_{2}+\cdots+a_{s-1})=b^{s} \end{cases}\] has solutions $n,b,a_i\in\mathbb{Z}^+,i=1,2,\ldots,s-1,s\geq 3.$ By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions $n,b,a_i\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ for $s=3$, but for $s=4$ it has infinitely many solutions $n,b,a_i\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ and for $s\geq 5$ there are infinitely many polynomial solutions $n,b,a_i\in\mathbb{Z}[t_1,t_2,\ldots,t_{s-3}]$ with positive value satisfying this Diop…
In this article, we investigate how Euler might have been led to conjecture the Prime Number Theorem, based on what he knew. We also speculate on why he did not do so.
We construct an Euler system -- a compatible family of global cohomology classes -- for the Galois representations appearing in the geometry of Hilbert modular surfaces. If a conjecture of Bloch and Kato on injectivity of regulator maps holds, this Euler system is non-trivial, and we deduce bounds towards the Iwasawa main conjecture for these Galois representations.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field. Under a certain Heegner hypothesis, Kolyvagin constructed cohomology classes for $E$ using $K$-CM points and conjectured they did not all vanish. Conditional on this conjecture, he described the Selmer rank of $E$ using his system of classes. We extend work of Wei Zhang to prove new cases of Kolyvagin's conjecture by considering congruences of modular forms modulo large powers of $p $. Additionally, we prove an analogous result, and give a description of the Selmer rank, in a complementary "definite" case (usi…
We calculate the constant term of Coleman power series and use it to prove an analogue of Iwasawa Main Conjecture in function fields of characteristic p>0 using Euler systems. This result is proved by a similar method of classical proof of Iwasawa Main Conjecture, go back to Kolyvagin and Rubin. We construct Euler systems from theta function of Drinfeld modules and establish finite-singular comparison equation even when p is not invertible the coefficients.
This note shows how to use the framework of Euler characteristic formulae to study Selmer groups of abelian varieties in certain dihedral or anticyclotomic extensions of CM fields via Iwasawa main conjectures, and in particular how to verify the p-part of the refined Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture in this setting. When the Selmer group is cotorsion with respect to the associated Iwasawa algebra, we obtain the p-part of formula predicted by the refined Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. When the Selmer group is not cotorsion with respect to the associated Iwasawa algebra, we give a con…
For a fixed odd prime q we investigate the first and second order terms of the asymptotic series expansion for the number of n\le x such that q does not divide phi(n). Part of the analysis involves a careful study of the Euler-Kronecker constants for cyclotomic fields. In particular, we show that the prime k-tuples conjecture and a conjecture of Ihara about the distribution of these Euler-Kronecker constants cannot be both true.
In this paper we study a new conjecture concerning Kato's Euler system of zeta elements for elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. This conjecture, which we refer to as the `Generalized Perrin-Riou Conjecture', predicts a precise congruence relation between a `Darmon-type derivative' of the zeta element of $E$ over an arbitrary real abelian field and the critical value of an appropriate higher derivative of the $L$-function of $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. We prove that the conjecture specializes in the relevant case of analytic rank one to recover Perrin-Riou's conjecture on the logarithm of Kato's …
We prove that a certain conjecture holds true and the conjecture states a relationship between the zeta function of a finite category and the Euler characteristic of a finite category.
We conjecture that the logarithm of the absolute value of the constant in the functional equation of the Hasse-Weil L-function of a variety X over Z is equal to a certain Arakelov de Rham Euler characteristic of X. This generalizes the fact that the constant in the functional equation of the zeta function of a number field is the square root of the discriminant of its ring of integers. We show that this conjecture is equivalent to Bloch's conjecture which expresses the conductor as the degree of a localized Chern class of the differentials. We prove both of these conjectures in the case of "ta…
