We are interested in nonlocal Eikonal Equations arising in the study of the dynamics of dislocations lines in crystals. For these nonlocal but also non monotone equations, only the existence and uniqueness of Lipschitz and local-in-time solutions were available in some particular cases. In this paper, we propose a definition of weak solutions for which we are able to prove the existence for all time. Then we discuss the uniqueness of such solutions in several situations, both in the monotone and non monotone case.
We study a mathematical model describing the dynamics of dislocation densities in crystals. This model is expressed as a one-dimensional system of a parabolic equation and a first order Hamilton-Jacobi equation that are coupled together. We show the existence and uniqueness of a viscosity solution among those assuming a lower-bound on their gradient for all time including the initial data. Moreover, we show the existence of a viscosity solution when we have no such restriction on the initial data. We also state a result of existence and uniqueness of an entropy solution of the system obtained …
We describe recent results obtained by G. Barles, P. Cardaliaguet, R. Monneau and the author recently. They are concerned with nonlocal Eikonal equations arising in the study of the dynamics of dislocation lines in crystals. These equations are nonlocal but also non monotone. We use a notion of weak solution to provide solutions for all time. Then, we discuss the link between these weak solutions and the classical viscosity solutions, and state some uniqueness results in particular cases. A counter-example to uniqueness is given.
This paper examines a system of partial differential equations describing dislocation dynamics in a crystalline solid. In particular we consider dynamics linearized about a state of zero stress and use linear semigroup theory to establish existence, uniqueness, and time asymptotic behavior of the linear system.
We present a mathematical framework within which Discrete Dislocation Dynamics in three dimensions is well-posed. By considering smooth distributions of slip, we derive a regularised energy for curved dislocations, and rigorously derive the Peach-Koehler force on the dislocation network via an inner variation. We propose a dissipative evolution law which is cast as a generalised gradient flow, and using a discrete-in-time approximation scheme, existence and regularity results are obtained for the evolution, up until the first time at which an infinite density of dislocation lines forms.
We formulate a variational model for a geometrically necessary screw dislocation in an anti-plane lattice model at zero temperature. Invariance of the energy functional under lattice symmetries renders the problem non-coercive. Nevertheless, by establishing coercivity with respect to the elastic strain and a concentration compactness principle, we prove existence of a global energy minimiser and thus demonstrate that dislocations are globally stable equilibria within our model.
We study the well-posedness of the vector-field Peierls-Nabarro model for curved dislocations with a double well potential and a bi-states limit at far field. Using the Dirichlet to Neumann map, the 3D Peierls-Nabarro model is reduced to a nonlocal scalar Ginzburg-Landau equation. We derive an integral formulation of the nonlocal operator, whose kernel is anisotropic and positive when Poisson's ratio $ν\in(-\frac12, \frac13)$. We then prove that any bounded stable solutions to this nonlocal scalar Ginzburg-Landau equation has a 1D profile, which corresponds to the PDE version of flatness resul…
We consider a dislocation-based rate-independent model of single crystal gradient plasticity with isotropic or linear kinematic hardening. The model is weakly formulated through the so-called primal form of the flow rule as a variational inequality for which a result of existence and uniqueness is obtained using the functional analytical framework developed by Han-Reddy.
We study nonlocal first-order equations arising in the theory of dislocations. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the solutions of these equations in the case of positive and negative velocities, under suitable regularity assumptions on the initial data and the velocity. These results are based on new $L^1$-type estimates on the viscosity solutions of first-order Hamilton-Jacobi Equations appearing in the so-called ``level-sets approach''. Our work is inspired by and simplifies a recent work of Alvarez, Cardaliaguet and Monneau.
We study well-posedness for the relaxed linear elastic micromorphic continuum model with symmetric Cauchy force-stresses and curvature contribution depending only on the micro-dislocation tensor. In contrast to classical micromorphic models our free energy is not uniformly pointwise positive definite in the control of the independent constitutive variables. Another interesting feature concerns the prescription of boundary values for the micro-distortion field: only tangential traces may be determined which are weaker than the usual strong anchoring boundary condition. There, decisive use is ma…
We study a strongly coupled system consisting of a parabolic equation and a singular Hamilton-Jacobi equation in one space dimension. This system describes the dynamics of dislocation densities in a material submitted to an exterior applied stress. The equations are written on a bounded interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions and require special attention to the boundary. We prove a result of global existence of a solution. The method of the proof consists in considering first a parabolic regularization of the full system, and then passing to the limit. We show some uniform bounds on this …
In this paper we use convex analysis and variational inequality methods to establish an existence result for a model of infinitesimal rate-independent gradient plasticity with kinematic hardening and plastic spin, in which the local backstress tensor remains symmetric. The model features a defect energy contribution which is quadratic in the dislocation density tensor Curl p, giving rise to nonlocal non-symmetric kinematic hardening. Use is made of a recently established Korn's type inequality for incompatible tensor fields. The solution space for the non-symmetric plastic distortion is natura…
We study a coupled system of two parabolic equations in one space dimension. This system is singular because of the presence of one term with the inverse of the gradient of the solution. Our system describes an approximate model of the dynamics of dislocation densities in a bounded channel submitted to an exterior applied stress. The system of equations is written on a bounded interval with Dirichlet conditions and requires a special attention to the boundary. The proof of existence and uniqueness is done under the use of two main tools: a certain comparison principle on the gradient of the so…
We consider the energetic description of a visco-plastic evolution and derive an existence result. The energies are convex, but not necessarily quadratic. Our model is a strain gradient model in which the curl of the plastic strain contributes to the energy. Our existence results are based on a time-discretization, the limit procedure relies on Helmholtz decompositions and compensated compactness.
We describe a method to show short time uniqueness results for viscosity solutions of general nonlocal and non-monotone second-order geometric equations arising in front propagation problems. Our method is based on some lower gradient bounds for the solution. These estimates are crucial to obtain regularity properties of the front, which allow to deal with nonlocal terms in the equations. Applications to short time uniqueness results for the initial value problems for dislocation type equations, asymptotic equations of a FitzHugh-Nagumo type system and equations depending on the Lebesgue measu…
In this paper, we study the existence and uniqueness of traveling wave solution for the accelerated Frenkel-Kontorova model. This model consists in a system of ODE that describes the motion particles in interaction. The most important applications we have in mind is the motion of crystal defects called dislocations. For this model, we prove the existence of traveling wave solutions under very weak assumptions. The uniqueness of the velocity is also studied as well as the uniqueness of the profile which used different types of strong maximum principle. As far as we know, this is the first resul…
In this paper, we study the motion of spirals by mean curvature type motion in the (two dimensional) plane. Our motivation comes from dislocation dynamics; in this context, spirals appear when a screw dislocation line reaches the surface of a crystal. The first main result of this paper is a comparison principle for the corresponding parabolic quasi-linear equation. As far as motion of spirals are concerned, the novelty and originality of our setting and results come from the fact that, first, the singularity generated by the attached end point of spirals is taken into account for the first ti…
We are interested in nonlocal Eikonal Equations describing the evolution of interfaces moving with a nonlocal, non monotone velocity. For these equations, only the existence of global-in-time weak solutions is available in some particular cases. In this paper, we propose a new approach for proving uniqueness of the solution when the front is expanding. This approach simplifies and extends existing results for dislocation dynamics. It also provides the first uniqueness result for a Fitzhugh-Nagumo system. The key ingredients are some new perimeter estimates for the evolving fronts as well as so…
We focus on existence and rigidity problems of the vectorial Peierls-Nabarro (PN) model for dislocations. Under the assumption that the misfit potential on the slip plane only depends on the shear displacement along the Burgers vector, a reduced non-local scalar Ginzburg-Landau equation with an anisotropic positive (if Poisson ratio belongs to $(-1/2,1/3)$) singular kernel is derived on the slip plane. We first prove that minimizers of the PN energy for this reduced scalar problem exist. Starting from $H^{1/2}$ regularity, we prove that these minimizers are smooth 1D profiles only depending on…
We study the existence and uniqueness for weak solutions to some classes of anisotropic elliptic Dirichlet problems with data belonging to the natural dual space.
We give a self-contained and short proof for the existence, uniqueness and measurability of so called $p$-harmonious functions. The proofs only use elementary analytic tools. As a consequence, we obtain existence, uniqueness and measurability of value functions for the tug-of-war game with noise.
In this article we find the equivalent conditions to assure the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions to semilinear elliptic equations wih double power nonlinearities. As a bonus, we give a simpler proof of our former result that the uniqueness condition comes from the existence condition.
In this paper, we mainly introduce a general method to study the existence and uniqueness of solution of free boundary problems with partially degenerate diffusion.
A proof is given of the global existence and uniqueness of a weak solution to Navier-Stokes boundary problem. The proof is short and essentially self-contained.
We prove the existence, uniqueness and non negativity of solutions for a nonlinear stationary Doi-Edwards equation. The existence is proved by a perturbation argument. We get the uniqueness and the non negativity by showing the convergence in time of the solution of the evolutionary Doi-Edwards equation towards any stationary solution.
In this paper, we provide a direct approach to the existence and uniqueness of strong (in the probabilistic sense) and weak (in the PDE sense) solutions to quasilinear stochastic partial differential equations, which are neither monotone nor locally monotone.
In this paper we consider the linearized version of a system of partial differential equations arising from a fluid-structure interaction model. We prove the existence and the uniqueness of the solution under natural regularity assumptions.
We establish the existence and uniqueness of variational solution to the nonlinear Neumann boundary problem for the $p^{th}$-Sub-Laplacian associated to a system of Hörmander vector fields
In this work we establish the well-posedness for infinitesimal dislocation based gradient viscoplasticity with isotropic hardening for general gradient monotone plastic flows. We assume an additive split of the displacement gradient into non-symmetric elastic distortion and non-symmetric plastic distortion. The thermodynamic potential is augmented with a term taking the dislocation density tensor $\operatorname{Curl} p$ into account. The constitutive equations in the models we study are assumed to be of self-controlling type. Based on the generalized version of Korn's inequality for incompatib…
In this paper, we prove existence and uniqueness of measure solutions for the Cauchy problem associated to the (vectorial) continuity equation with a non-local flow. We also give a stability result with respect to various parameters.
This work is devoted to the study of a compressible viscoelastic fluids satisfying the Oldroyd-B model in a regular bounded domain. We prove the local existence of solutions and uniqueness of flows by a classical fixed point argument.
In this paper we investigate a class of elliptic problems involving a nonlocal Kirchhoff type operator with variable coefficients and data changing its sign. Under appropriated conditions on the coefficients, we have shown existence and uniqueness of solution.
In this paper we extend results obtained in [3] and [5]. By considering a semi linear conservation law with velocity in $L^\infty$, we prove by fixed point arguments existence and uniqueness result and even in a penalized situation.
We obtain the existence, regularity, uniqueness of the non-stationary problems of a class of non-Newtonian fluid is a power law fluid with $p>9/5$ in the half-space under slip boundary conditions.
In this note we present some recent results for Kirchhoff equations in generalized Gevrey spaces. We show that these spaces are the natural framework where classical results can be unified and extended. In particular we focus on existence and uniqueness results for initial data whose regularity depends on the continuity modulus of the nonlinear term, both in the strictly hyperbolic case, and in the degenerate hyperbolic case.
The integrable Novikov equation can be regarded as one of the Camassa-Holm-type equations with cubic nonlinearity. In this paper, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of the Hölder continuous energy conservative solutions for the Cauchy problem of the Novikov equation.
In this paper, we consider the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions of a nonlinear elliptic equation with a variable exponent, a monotonic type operator and a convection term. With the topological degree theory, we prove the existence of at least one weak solution under some Leray-Lions and growth conditions. Moreover, we obtain the uniqueness of the solution of the problem under some additional assumptions. Our results generalize and improve existing results with another approach.
In this paper we give a necessary and suffcient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of periodic solutions of functional differential equations with n delay d dt x(t) = Ax(t) + n j=1 Bx(t -- r j) + f (t). The conditions are obtained in terms of R-boundedness of operator valued Fourier multipliers.
The paper deals with the existence and uniqueness of a non-trivial solution to non-homogeneous $ p ( x ) -$laplacian equations, managed by non polynomial growth operator in the framework of variable exponent Sobolev spaces on Riemannian manifolds. The mountain pass Theorem is used.
We prove a global existence, uniqueness and regularity result for a two-species reaction-diffusion volume-surface system that includes nonlinear bulk diffusion and nonlinear (weak) cross diffusion on the active surface. A key feature is a proof of upper $L^{\infty}$-bounds that exploits the entropic gradient structure of the system.
We study a model due to J.M. Lasry and P.L. Lions, describing the evolution of a scalar price which is realized as a free boundary in a 1-D diffusion equation with dynamically evolving, non-standard sources. We establish global existence and uniqueness.
We prove a few existence results of a solution for a static system with a coupling of thermoviscoelastic type. As this system involves $L^1$ coupling terms we use the techniques of renormalized solutions for elliptic equations with $L^1$ data. We also prove partial uniqueness results.
In this note we prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for the boundary value problem modelling the stationary case of the bioconvective flow problem introduced by Tuval et. al. (2005, {\it PNAS} 102, 2277--2282). We derive some appropriate a priori estimates for the weak solution, which implies the existence, by application of Gossez theorem, and the uniqueness by standard methodology of comparison of two arbitrary solutions.
In this paper, we study the time-fractional diffusion equation on a metric star graph. The existence and uniqueness of the weak solution are investigated and the proof is based on eigenfunction expansions. Some priori estimates and regularity results of the solution are proved.
In this paper a nonlinear coupled Schrodinger system in the presence of mixed cubic and superlinear power laws is considered. Focus are made on the steady state solutions of the continuous system for existence and uniqueness by minimizing problem on some associated Nehari manifold.
We study in this paper the axisymmetric 3-D Navier-Stokes system where the horizontal viscosity is zero. We prove the existence of a unique global solution to the system with initial data of Yudovitch type
An existence and uniqueness result, up to fattening, for a class of crystalline mean curvature flows with natural mobility is proved. The results are valid in any dimension and for arbitrary, possibly unbounded, initial closed sets. The comparison principle is obtained by means of a suitable weak formulation of the flow, while the existence of a global-in-time solution follows via a minimizing movements approach.
We study the $p$-Choquard equation in 3-dimensional case and establish existence and uniqueness of ground states for the corresponding Weinstein functional. For proving the uniqueness of ground states, we use the radial symmetry to transform the equation into an ordinary differential system, and applying the Pohozaev identities and Gronwall lemma we show that any two Weinstein minimizers coincide.
This paper deals with existence and uniqueness results for a transient nonlinear radiative-conductive system in three-dimensional case. This system describes the heat transfer for a grey, semi-transparent and non-scattering medium with general boundary conditions. We reformulate the full transient state system as a fixed-point problem. The existence and uniqueness proof is based on Banach fixed point theorem.
