A cohomological vanishing property is proved for finitely supported ideals in an arbitrary d-dimensional regular local ring. (Such vanishing implies some refined Briancon-Skoda-type results, not otherwise known in mixed characteristic.) It follows that the adjoint of a finitely supported ideal I of order a has order sup(a+1-d, 0), and that taking adjoints of finitely supported ideals commutes with taking strict transforms at infinitely near points. In particular, the adjoint of I is also finitely supported. Also: if this I is a normal ideal, then its reduction number is the least integer > d(1-1/a).
In this paper we find a formula for the length of a finitely supported complete ideal in terms of the order of the strict transform of the ideal. This formula was known for complete ideals of height two in a two dimensional regular local ring and was proved independently by Hoskin and Deligne. Several consequences are deduced from this formula.
Let I be a finitely supported complete m-primary ideal of a regular local ring (R, m). A theorem of Lipman implies that I has a unique factorization as a *-product of special *-simple complete ideals with possibly negative exponents for some of the factors. The existence of negative exponents occurs if the dimension of R is at least 3 because of the existence of finitely supported *-simple ideals that are not special. We consider properties of special *-simple complete ideals such as their Rees valuations and point basis. Let (R, m) be a d-dimensional equicharacterstic regular local ring with …
Avramov and Buchweitz proved that for finitely generated modules $M$ and $N$ over a complete intersection local ring $R$, $\Ext^i_R(M,N)=0$ for all $i\gg 0$ implies $\Ext^i_R(N,M)=0$ for all $i\gg 0$. In this note we give some generalizations of this result. Indeed we prove the above mentioned result when (1) $M$ is finitely generated and $N$ is arbitrary, (2) $M$ is arbitrary and $N$ has finite length and (3) $M$ is complete and $N$ is finitely generated.
We investigate symmetry in the vanishing of Tate cohomology for finitely generated modules over local Gorenstein rings. For finitely generated R-modules M and N over Gorenstein local ring R, it is shown that $\widehat{Ext}^i_R(M,N)=0$ for all $i\in\mathbb{Z}$ if and only if $\widehat{Ext}^i_R(N,M)=0$ for all $i\in\mathbb{Z}$.
We give an elementary proof of Grothendieck's non-vanishing Theorem: For a finitely generated non-zero module $M$ over a Noetherian local ring $A$ with maximal ideal $\m$, the local cohomology module $H^{\dim M}_{\m}(M)$ is non-zero.
Let I be a finitely supported complete m-primary ideal of a regular local ring (R, m). We consider singularities of the normalization of the blow-up Proj R[It] of I. A theorem of Lipman implies that the ideal I has a unique factorization as a star-product of special star-simple complete ideals with possibly negative exponents for some of the factors. If the normalization of the projective model Proj R[It] is regular, we prove that it is the regular model obtained by blowing up the finite set of base points of I. Extending work of Lipman and Huneke-Sally in dimension 2, we prove that every loca…
We investigate symmetry in the vanishing of Ext for finitely generated modules over local Gorenstein rings. In particular, we define a class of local Gorenstein rings, which we call AB rings, and show that for finitely generated modules $M$ and $N$ over an AB ring $R$, $Ext^i_R(M,N)=0$ for all $i >> 0$ if and only if $Ext^i_R(N,M)=0$ for all $i >> 0$.
Let $(R,\m)$ and $(S,\n)$ be commutative Noetherian local rings, and let $ϕ:R\to S$ be a flat local homomorphism such that $\m S = \n$ and the induced map on residue fields $R/\m \to S/\n$ is an isomorphism. Given a finitely generated $R$-module $M$, we show that $M$ has an $S$-module structure compatible with the given $R$-module structure if and only if $\Ext^i_R(S,M)=0$ for each $i\ge 1$. We say that an $S$-module $N$ is {\it extended} if there is a finitely generated $R$-module $M$ such that $N\cong S\otimes_RM$. Given a short exact sequence $0 \to N_1\to N \to N_2\to 0$ of finitely genera…
This manuscript transfers the main aspects of Prony's method from finitely-supported measures to the classes of signed or non-negative measures supported on algebraic varieties of any dimension. In particular, we show that the Zariski closure of the support of these measures is determined by finitely many moments and can be computed from the kernel of certain moment matrices.
Let R be a (not necessarily local) Noetherian ring and M a finitely generated R-module of finite dimension d. Let \fa be an ideal of R and \fM denote the intersection of all prime ideals \fp in Supp_RH^d_{\fa}(M). It is shown that H^d_{\fa}(M)\simeq H^d_{\fM}(M)/\displaystyle{\sum_{n\in \mathbb{N}}}<\fM>(0:_{H^d_{\fM}(M)}\fa^n), where for an Artinian R-module A we put <\fM>A=\cap_{n\in \mathbb{N}} \fM^nA. As a consequence, it is proved that for all ideals \fa of R, there are only finitely many non-isomorphic top local cohomology modules H^d_{\fa}(M) having the same support. In addition, we est…
In this article, we give a condition on the vanishing of finitely many homogeneous components which must imply the asymptotic vanishing for multigraded modules. We apply our result to multi-Rees algebras of ideals. As a consequence, we obtain a result on normality of monomial ideals, which extends and improves the results of Reid-Roberts-Vitulli, Singla, and Sarkar-Verma.
Generalizing work of Smith and Hara, we give a new characterization of log-terminal singularities for finitely generated algebras over $\mathbb C$, in terms of purity properties of ultraproducts of characteristic $p$ Frobenii. The first application is a Boutôt-type theorem for log-terminal singularities: given a pure morphism $Y\to X$ between affine $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein varieties of finite type over $\mathbb C$, if $Y$ has at most a log-terminal singularities, then so does $X$. The second application is the Vanishing for Maps of Tor for log-terminal singularities: if $A\subset R$ is a Noethe…
Let $(S,\mathfrak{m},k)$ and $(T,\mathfrak{n},k)$ be local rings, and let $R$ denote their fiber product over their common residue field $k$. Inspired by work of Naseh and Sather-Wagstaff, we explore consequences of vanishing of ${\rm Tor}^R_m(M,N)$ for various values of $m$, where $M$ and $N$ are finitely generated $R$-modules.
We develop a theory of ``ad hoc'' Chern characters for twisted matrix factorizations associated to a scheme $X$, a line bundle ${\mathcal L}$, and a regular global section $W \in Γ(X, {\mathcal L})$. As an application, we establish the vanishing, in certain cases, of $h_c^R(M,N)$, the higher Herbrand difference, and, $η_c^R(M,N)$, the higher codimensional analogue of Hochster's theta pairing, where $R$ is a complete intersection of codimension $c$ with isolated singularities and $M$ and $N$ are finitely generated $R$-modules. Specifically, we prove such vanishing if $R = Q/(f_1, \dots, f_c)$ h…
Let $\fa$ denote an ideal of a $d$-dimensional Gorenstein local ring $R$ and $M$ and $N$ two finitely generated $R$-modules with $\pd M< \infty$. It is shown that $H^d_{\fa}(M,N)=0$ if and only if $\dim \hat{R}\big/ \fa\hat{R}+\fp>0$ for all $\fp\in\Ass_{\hat{R}}\hat{M}\cap\Supp_{\hat{R}}\hat{N}$.
Let $\fa$ be an ideal of a local ring $(R,\fm)$ and $X$ a $d$-dimensional homologically bounded complex of $R$-modules whose all homology modules are finitely generated. We show that $H^d_{\fa}(X)=0$ if and only if $\dim \hat{R}/\fa \hat{R}+\fp>0$ for all prime ideals $\fp$ of $\hat{R}$ such that $\dim \hat{R}/\fp-\inf (X\otimes_R\hat{R})_{\fp}=d$.
We construct a class of Gorenstein local rings $R$ which admit minimal complete $R$-free resolutions $\bd C$ such that the sequence $\{\rank_R C_i\}$ is constant for $i< 0$, and grows exponentially for all $i>0$. Over these rings we show that there exist finitely generated $R$-modules $M$ and $N$ such that $\Ext^i_R(M,N)=0$ for all $i> 0$, but $\Ext^i_R(N,M)\ne 0$ for all $i>0$.
We provide new results on the vanishing of local cohomology modules supported at ideals of minors of matrices over arbitrary commutative Noetherian rings. In the process, we compute the local cohomology of rings of polynomials with integer coefficients---supported at generic determinantal ideals---and also obtain results on F-modules and D-modules that are likely to be of independent interest.
The long-standing Auslander and Reiten Conjecture states that a finitely generated module over a finite-dimensional algebra is projective if certain Ext-groups vanish. Several authors, including Avramov, Buchweitz, Iyengar, Jorgensen, Nasseh, Sather-Wagstaff, and Şega, have studied a possible counterpart of the conjecture, or question, for commutative rings in terms of vanishing of Tor. This has led to the notion of Tor-persistent rings. Our main result shows that the class of Tor-persistent local rings is closed under a number of standard procedures in ring theory.
Let $(R,\fr m)$ be a Noetherian local ring, $I$ an ideal of $R$ and $M, N$ two finitely generated $R$-modules. The first result of this paper is to prove a vanishing theorem for generalized local cohomology modules which says that $H^j_I(M,N)=0$ for all $j>\dim(R)$, provided $M$ is of finite projective dimension. Next, we study and give characterizations for the least and the last integer $r$ such that $\Supp(H^r_I(M,N))$ is infinite.
Given finitely generated modules $M$ and $N$ over a local ring $R$, the tensor product $M\otimes_RN$ typically has nonzero torsion. Indeed, the assumption that the tensor product is torsion-free influences the structure and vanishing of the modules $\Tor^R_i(M,N)$ for all $i\geq 1$. In turn, the vanishing of $\Tor^R_i(M,N)$ imposes restrictions on the depth properties of the modules $M$ and $N$. These connections made their first appearance in Auslander's 1961 paper "Modules over unramified regular local rings". We will survey the literature on these topics, with emphasis on progress during th…
The primary goal of this paper is to investigate the structure of irreducible monomorphisms to and irreducible epimorphisms from finitely generated free modules over a noetherian local ring. Then we show that over such a ring, self-vanishing of Ext and Tor for a finitely generated module admitting such an irreducible homomorphism forces the ring to be regular.
Let $A$ be a Noetherian ring. For each $k$ where $0 \leq k \leq \dim A$ we construct left exact functors $D_k$ on $Mod(A)$. Let $D^i_k$ be the $i^{th}$-right derived functor of $D_k$. Let $M$ be a finitely generated $A$-module. Under mild conditions on $A$ and $M$ we prove that vanishing of some finitely many $D^i_k(M)$ is equivalent to $M$ satisfying $S_n$.
Auslander conjectured that every Artin algebra satisfies a certain condition on vanishing of cohomology of finitely generated modules. The failure of this conjecture - by a 2003 counterexample due to Jorgensen and Sega - motivates the consideration of the class of rings that do satisfy Auslander's condition. We call them AC rings and show that an AC Artin algebra that is left-Gorenstein is also right-Gorenstein. Furthermore, the Auslander-Reiten Conjecture is proved for AC rings, and Auslander's G-dimension is shown to be functorial for AC rings that are commutative or have a dualizing complex…
Let Q be an affine semigroup generating Z^d, and fix a finitely generated Z^d-graded module M over the semigroup algebra k[Q] for a field k. We provide an algorithm to compute a minimal Z^d-graded injective resolution of M up to any desired cohomological degree. As an application, we derive an algorithm computing the local cohomology modules H^i_I(M) supported on any monomial (that is, Z^d-graded) ideal I. Since these local cohomology modules are neither finitely generated nor finitely cogenerated, part of this task is defining a finite data structure to encode them.
We prove a generalized Dade's Lemma for quotients of local rings by ideals generated by regular sequences. That is, given a pair of finitely generated modules over such a ring with algebraically closed residue field, we prove a sufficient (and necessary) condition for the vanishing of all higher Ext or Tor of the modules. This condition involves the vanishing of all higher Ext or Tor of the modules over all quotients by a minimal generator of the ideal generated by the regular sequence.
We introduce the notion of Burch submodules and weakly $\mathfrak m$-full submodules of modules over local rings and study their properties. One of our main results shows that Burch submodules satisfy 2-Tor rigid and test property. We also show that over a local ring $(R,\mathfrak m)$ a submodule $M$ of a finitely generated $R$-module $X$, such that either $M=\mathfrak m X$ or $M(\subseteq \mathfrak m X$) is weakly $\mathfrak m$-full in $X$, is 1-Tor rigid and a test module provided that $X$ is faithful (and $X/M$ has finite length when $M$ is weakly $\mathfrak m$-full). As an application, we …
Huneke and Wiegand conjectured that, if $M$ is a finitely generated, non-free, torsion-free module with rank over a one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring $R$, then the tensor product of $M$ with its algebraic dual has torsion. This conjecture, if $R$ is Gorenstein, is a special case of a celebrated conjecture of Auslander and Reiten on the vanishing of self extensions that stems from the representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras. If $R$ is a one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay ring such that $R=S/(f)$ for some local ring $(S, \mathfrak{n})$, and a non zero-divisor $f \in \mathfrak{n}…
Let $M$ be a finitely generated module over a local complete intersection $R$ of characteristic $p>0$. The property that $M$ has finite projective dimension can be characterized by the vanishing of $\ext_R^i({}^{f^n} R,M)$ for some $i>0$ and for some $n>0$.
We introduce a concept of formal local homology modules which is in some sense dual to P. Schenzel's concept of formal local cohomology modules. The dual theorem and the non-vanishing theorem of formal local homology modules will be shown. We also give some conditions for formal local homology modules being finitely generated or artinian.
