Let Q be an affine semigroup generating Z^d, and fix a finitely generated Z^d-graded module M over the semigroup algebra k[Q] for a field k. We provide an algorithm to compute a minimal Z^d-graded injective resolution of M up to any desired cohomological degree. As an application, we derive an algorithm computing the local cohomology modules H^i_I(M) supported on any monomial (that is, Z^d-graded) ideal I. Since these local cohomology modules are neither finitely generated nor finitely cogenerated, part of this task is defining a finite data structure to encode them.
There are nice relations between graded homological dimensions and ordinary homological dimensions. We study the Gorenstein injective dimension of a complex of graded modules denoted by $^*\Gid$, and derive its properties. In particular we prove the Chouinard's like formula for $^*\Gid$, and compare it with the usual Gorenstein injective dimension.
In this paper, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the Cohen-Macaulayness of the associated graded ring of a simplicial affine semigroups using Gröbner basis. We generalize the concept of homogeneous numerical semigroup for the simplicial affine semigroup and show that the Betti numbers of the corresponding semigroup ring matches with the Betti numbers of the associated graded ring. We also define the nice extension for simplicial affine semigroups, motivated by the notion of a nice extension of the numerical semigroups.
It is characterized when coarsening functors between categories of graded modules preserve injectivity of objects, and when they commute with graded covariant Hom functors.
In this paper we study the Weak Lefschetz property of two classes of standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras associated in a natural way to the Apéry set of numerical semigroups. To this aim we also prove a general result about the transfer of Weak Lefschetz property from an Artinian Gorenstein algebra to its quotients modulo a colon ideal.
Let $R=k[x,y]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $k$ of prime characteristic $p$ and let $E$ denote the injective hull of $k$ (which is isomorphic to $H^2_{(x,y)}(R)$). We prove that $E$ is not an injective object in the category of graded $F$-modules over $R$. This answers in the negative a question raised by Lyubeznik-Singh-Walther.
Let (R, m) be the semigroup ring associated to a numerical semigroup S. In this paper we study the property of its associated graded ring G(m) to be Complete Intersection. In particular, we introduce and characterise beta-rectangular and gamma-rectangular Apéry sets, which will be the fundamental concepts of the paper and will provide, respectively, a sufficient condition and a characterisation for G(m) to be Complete Intersection. Then we use these notions to give four equivalent conditions for G(m) in order to be Complete Intersection.
Let $C \subset {\bf N}^d$ be an affine semigroup, and $R=K[C]$ its semigroup ring. This paper is a collection of various results on "$C$-graded" $R$-modules, especially, monomial ideals. For example, we show the following: If $R$ is normal and $I$ is a radical monomial ideal (i.e., $R/I$ is a generalization of Stanley-Reisner rings), then the sequentially Cohen-Macaulay property of $R/I$ is a topological property of the "geometric realization" of the cell complex associated with $I$. Moreover, we can give a squarefree modules/constructible sheaves version of this result.
Let (R;m) be a numerical semigroup ring. In this paper we study the properties of its associated graded ring G(m). In particular, we describe the H^0_M for G(m) (where M is the homogeneous maximal ideal of G(m)) and we characterize when G(m) is Buchsbaum. Furthermore, we find the length of H^0_M as a G(m)-module, when G(m) is Buchsbaum. In the 3-generated numerical semigroup case, we describe the H^0_M in term of the Apery set of the numerical semigroup associated to R. Finally, we improve two characterizations of the Cohen-Macaulayness and Gorensteinness of G(m) given in [2] and [3], respecti…
The Goto number of a parameter ideal Q in a Noetherian local ring (R,m) is the largest integer q such that Q : m^q is integral over Q. The Goto numbers of the monomial parameter ideals of R = k[[x^{a_1}, x^{a_2},..., x_{a_ν}]] are characterized using the semigroup of R. This helps in computing them for classes of numerical semigroup rings, as well as on a case-by-case basis. The minimal Goto number of R and its connection to other invariants is explored. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the associated graded rings of R and R/x^{a_1}R to be Gorenstein are also given, again using the semi…
Let R be a graded ring and n > 1 an integer. In this paper, We introduce the notions of Ding n-gr-injective and Ding n-gr-flat modules by using of special finitely presented graded modules . Then, some properties of Ding n-gr-injective and Ding n-gr-flat modules are obtained. On n-gr-coherent rings, we investigate the relationships among Ding n-gr-injective and Ding n-gr-flat modules and also, we prove that any graded module in R-gr (resp. gr-R) admits an Ding n-gr-injective (resp. Ding n-gr-flat) cover and preenvelope.
For a finitely generated graded module $M$ over a positively-graded commutative Noetherian ring $R$, the second author established in 1999 some restrictions, which can be formulated in terms of the Castelnuovo regularity of $M$ or the so-called $a^*$-invariant of $M$, on the supporting degrees of a graded-indecomposable graded-injective direct summand, with associated prime ideal containing the irrelevant ideal of $R$, of any term in the minimal graded-injective resolution of $M$. Earlier, in 1995, T. Marley had established connections between finitely graded local cohomology modules of $M$ an…
We give a combinatorial description of local cohomology modules of a graded module over a semigroup ring, with support at the graded maximal ideal. This combinatorial framework yields Hochster-type formulas for the Hilbert series of such local cohomology modules in terms of the homology of finitely many polyhedral cell complexes. A Cohen--Macaulay criterion immediately follows. We also provide an alternative proof of a result of [18] characterizing Cohen--Macaulay affine semigroup rings.
Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field $K$ of arbitrary characteristic and $D$ be the ring of differential operators over $R$. Inspired by Euler formula for homogeneous polynomials, we introduce a class of graded $D$-modules, called Eulerian graded $D$-modules. It is proved that a vast class of $D$-modules, including all composite of local cohomology modules, $H_{J_0}^{i_0}(H_{J_1}^{i_1}...(H_{J_n}^{i_n}(R)))$ where $J_1,...,J_n$ are homogeneous ideals of $R$, are Eulerian graded. As an application of our theory, we prove that in all characteristic, these composite of local cohomology modul…
We construct a minimal free resolution of the semigroup ring k[C] in terms of minimal resolutions of k[A] and k[B] when <C> is a numerical semigroup obtained by gluing two numerical semigroups <A> and <B>. Using our explicit construction, we compute the Betti numbers, graded Betti numbers, regularity and Hilbert series of k[C], and prove that the minimal free resolution of k[C] has a differential graded algebra structure provided the resolutions of k[A] and k[B] possess them. We discuss the consequences of our results in small embedding dimensions. Finally, we give an extension of our main res…
Given a module M over a ring R which has a grading by a semigroup Q, we present a spectral sequence that computes the local cohomology of M at any Q-graded ideal I in terms of Ext modules. This method is used to obtain finiteness results for the local cohomology of graded modules over semigroup rings; in particular we prove that for a semigroup Q whose saturation is simplicial, the Bass numbers of such local cohomology modules are finite. Conversely, if the saturation of Q is not simplicial, one can find a graded ideal I and a graded R-module M whose local cohomology at I in some degree has an…
In this paper we undertake a basic study on connective commutative differential graded algebras (CDGA), more precisely, piecewise Noetherian CDGA, which is a DG-counter part of commutative Noetherian algebra. We establish basic results for example, Auslaner-Buchsbaum formula and Bass formula without any unnecessary assumptions. The key notion is the sup-projective (sppj) and inf-injective (ifij) resolutions introduced by the author, which are DG-versions of the projective and injective resolution for ordinary modules. These are different from DG-projective and DG-injective resolutions which is…
Lance Bryant noticed in his thesis that there was a flaw in our paper "Associated graded rings of one-dimensional analytically irreducible rings", J. Algebra 304 (2006), 349-358. It can be fixed by adding a condition, called the BF condition. We discuss some equivalent conditions, and show that they are fulfilled for some classes of rings, in particular for our motivating example of semigroup rings. Furthermore we discuss the connection to a similar result, stated in more generality, by Cortadella-Zarzuela. Finally we use our result to conclude when a semigroup ring in embedding dimension at m…
Generalizing the notion of Newton polytope, we define the Newton-Okounkov body, respectively, for semigroups of integral points, graded algebras, and linear series on varieties. We prove that any semigroup in the lattice Z^n is asymptotically approximated by the semigroup of all the points in a sublattice and lying in a convex cone. Applying this we obtain several results: we show that for a large class of graded algebras, the Hilbert functions have polynomial growth and their growth coefficients satisfy a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality. We prove analogues of Fujita approximation theorem for …
Let $M$ and $N$ be modules over a commutative ring $R$ with $N$ Noetherian. We define the injective capacity of $M$ with respect to $N$ over $R$ to be the supremum of the values $t$ for which $N^{\oplus t}$ embeds into $M$. In a dual fashion, we deem the number of cogenerators of $N$ with respect to $M$ over $R$ to be the infimum of the numbers $t$ for which $N$ embeds into $M^{\oplus t}$. We demonstrate that the global injective capacity is the infimum of its local analogues and that the global number of cogenerators is the supremum of the corresponding local invariants. We also prove enhance…
We characterize when the monomial maximal ideal of a simplicial affine semigroup ring has a monomial minimal reduction. When this is the case, we study the Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein properties of the associated graded ring and provide several bounds for the reduction number with respect to the monomial minimal reduction.
We construct a number of different examples of non-Noetherian graded rings that are injective as modules over themselves (or have some related but weaker properties). We discuss how these are related to the theory of triangulated categories, and to Freyd's Generating Hypothesis in stable homotopy theory.
This paper studies the class group of graded integral domains. As an application, we state a decomposition theorem for class groups of semigroup rings. This recovers well-known results developed for the classic contexts of polynomial rings and Krull semigroup rings. Our results are backed by original examples.
For some numerical semigroup rings of small embedding dimension, namely those of embedding dimension 3, and symmetric or pseudosymmetric of embedding dimension 4, presentations has been determined in the literature. We extend these results by giving the whole graded minimal free resolutions explicitly. Then we use these resolutions to determine some invariants of the semigroups and certain interesting relations among them. Finally, we determine semigroups of small embedding dimensions which have strongly indispensable resolutions.
Let $\mm=(m_0,...,m_n)$ be an arithmetic sequence, i.e., a sequence of integers $m_0<...<m_n$ with no common factor that minimally generate the numerical semigroup $\sum_{i=0}^{n}m_i\N$ and such that $m_i-m_{i-1}=m_{i+1}-m_i$ for all $i\in\{1,...,n-1\}$. The homogeneous coordinate ring $Γ_\mm$ of the affine monomial curve parametrically defined by $X_0=t^{m_0},...,X_n=t^{m_n}$ is a graded $R$-module where $R$ is the polynomial ring $k[X_0,...,X_n]$ with the grading obtained by setting $°{X_i}:=m_i$. In this paper, we construct an explicit minimal graded free resolution for $Γ_\mm$ and show tha…
We look at how the equivalence of tight closure and plus closure (or Frobenius closure) in the homogeneous m-coprimary case implies the same closure equivalence in the non-homogeneous m-coprimary case in standard graded rings. Although our result does not depend upon dimension, the primary application is based on results known in dimension 2 due to the recent results of H. Brenner. We also show that unlike the Noetherian case, the injective hull of the residue field over $R^+$ or $R^\infty$ contains elements that are not killed by any power of the maximal ideal of R.

If $S=<d_1,...,d_ν>$ is a numerical semigroup, we call the ring $\C[S]=\C[t^{d_1},...,t^{d_ν}]$ the semigroup ring of $S$. We study the ring of differential operators on $\C[S]$, and its associated graded in the filtration induced by the order of the differential operators. We find that these are easy to describe in case $S$ is a so called Arf semigroup. If $I$ is an ideal in $\C[S]$ that is generated by monomials, we also give some results on $\der(I,I)$ (the set of derivations which map $I$ into $I$).
Given a numerical semigroup ring $R=k[\![S]\!]$, an ideal $E$ of $S$ and an odd element $b \in S$, the numerical duplication $S \! \Join^b \! E$ is a numerical semigroup, whose associated ring $k[\![S \! \Join^b \! E]\!]$ shares many properties with the Nagata's idealization and the amalgamated duplication of $R$ along the monomial ideal $I=(t^e \mid e\in E)$. In this paper we study the associated graded ring of the numerical duplication characterizing when it is Cohen-Macaulay, Gorenstein or complete intersection. We also study when it is a homogeneous numerical semigroup, a property that is …
Quasi-socle ideals, that is the ideals $I$ of the form $I= Q : \mathfrak{m}^q$ in Gorenstein numerical semigroup rings over fields are explored, where $Q$ is a parameter ideal, and $\mathfrak{m}$ is the maximal ideal in the base local ring, and $q \geq 1$ is an integer. The problems of when $I$ is integral over $Q$ and of when the associated graded ring $\mathrm{G}(I) = \bigoplus_{n \geq 0}I^n/I^{n+1}$ of $I$ is Cohen-Macaulay are studied. The problems are rather wild; examples are given.
Let $R=k[x_1,..., x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $k$ of characteristic $p>0,$ let $\m=(x_1,..., x_n)$ be the maximal ideal generated by the variables, let $^*E$ be the naturally graded injective hull of $R/\m$ and let $^*E(n)$ be $^*E$ degree shifted downward by $n.$ We introduce the notion of graded $F$-modules (as a refinement of the notion of $F$-modules) and show that if a graded $F$-module $\M$ has zero-dimensional support, then $\M,$ as a graded $R$-module, is isomorphic to a direct sum of a (possibly infinite) number of copies of $^*E(n).$ As a consequence, we show that if the …
Given a numerical semigroup S = <a_0, a_1, a_2,..., a_t> and n in S, we consider the factorization n = c_0 a_0 + c_1 a_1 + ... + c_t a_t where c_i >= 0. Such a factorization is maximal if c_0 + c_1 + ... + c_t is a maximum over all such factorizations of n. We provide an algorithm for computing the maximum number of maximal factorizations possible for an element in S, which is called the maximal denumerant of S. We also consider various cases that have connections to the Cohen-Macualay and Gorenstein properties of associated graded rings for which this algorithm simplifies.
Let $H$ be a positive semigroup in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ generated by $A$, and let $K[H]$ be the associated semigroup ring over a field $K$. We investigate heredity of the Cohen-Macaulay property from $K[H]$ to both its $A$-Newton graded ring and to its face rings. We show by example that neither one inherits in general the Cohen-Macaulay property. On the positive side we show that for every $H$ there exist generating sets $A$ for which the Newton graduation preserves Cohen-Macaulayness. This gives an elementary proof for an important vanishing result on $A$-hypergeometric Euler-Koszul homology. As a…
The notion of "toric face rings" generalizes both Stanley-Reisner rings and affine semigroup rings, and has been studied by Bruns, Romer, et.al. Here, we will show that, for a toric face ring $R$, the "graded" Matlis dual of a Cech complex gives a dualizing complex. In the most general setting, $R$ is not a graded ring in the usual sense. Hence technical argument is required.
In this paper, we introduce the class of Cohen-Macaulay (=CM) dg (=differential graded) modules over Gorenstein dg algebras and study their basic properties. We show that the category of CM dg modules forms a Frobenius extriangulated category, in the sense of Nakaoka and Palu, and it admits almost split extensions. We also study representation-finite $d$-self-injective dg algebras $A$ in detail. In particular, we classify the Auslander-Reiten (=AR) quivers of CM $A$ for those $A$ in terms of $(-d)$-Calabi-Yau (=CY) configurations, which are Riedtmann's configuration for the case $d=1$. For any…
In this article we mainly consider the positively Z-graded polynomial ring R=F[X,Y] over an arbitrary field F and Hilbert series of finitely generated graded R-modules. The central result is an arithmetic criterion for such a series to be the Hilbert series of some R-module of positive depth. In the generic case, that is, the degrees of X and Y being coprime, this criterion can be formulated in terms of the numerical semigroup generated by those degrees.
The Hochschild cohomology of a differential graded algebra, or a differential graded category, admits a natural map to the graded center of its homology category: the characteristic homomorphism. We interpret it as an edge homomorphism in a spectral sequence. This gives a conceptual explanation of the failure of the characteristic homomorphism to be injective or surjective, in general. To illustrate this, we discuss modules over the dual numbers, coherent sheaves over algebraic curves, as well as examples related to free loop spaces and string topology.
Every quotient R/I of a semigroup ring R by a radical monomial ideal I has a unique minimal injective-like resolution by direct sums of quotients of R modulo prime monomial ideals. The quotient R/I is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if every summand in cohomological degree $i$ has dimension exactly dim(R/I) - i. This Cohen-Macaulay characterization reduces to the Eagon-Reiner theorem by Alexander duality when R is a polynomial ring. The proof exploits a graded ring-theoretic generalization of the Zeeman spectral sequence, thereby also providing a combinatorial topological version for polyhedral cel…
Let E = K< y_1, ..., y_n > be the exterior algebra. The ``(cohomological) distinguished pairs" of a graded E-module M describe the growth of a minimal graded injective resolution of M. Roemer gave a duality theorem between the distinguished pairs of M and those of its dual M^*. In this paper, we show that under Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand correspondence, his theorem is translated into a natural corollary of local duality for (complexes of) graded S=K[x_1, >..., x_n]-modules. Using this idea, we also give a Z^n-graded version of Roemer's theorem.
We extend the notion of standard pairs to the context of monomial ideals in semigroup rings. Standard pairs can be used as a data structure to encode such monomial ideals, providing an alternative to generating sets that is well suited to computing intersections, decompositions, and multiplicities. We give algorithms to compute standard pairs from generating sets and vice versa and make all of our results effective. We assume that the underlying semigroup ring is positively graded, but not necessarily normal. The lack of normality is at the root of most challenges, subtleties, and innovations …
We introduce the universal unitarily graded A-algebra for a commutative ring A and an arbitrary abelian extension U of the group of units of A, and use this concept to give simplified proofs of the main theorems of co-Galois theory in the sense of T. Albu. The main tool is a generalisation of a theorem by M. Kneser which, in our language, is a criterion for the universal algebra to be a field when the base ring A is itself a field. This theorem implies also the theorem of A. Schinzel on linearly independent roots. We discuss examples involving the injective hull of the multiplicative group of …
Let $A$ be an associative non-positive differential graded ring. In this paper we make a detailed study of a category $\operatorname{\mathsf{Inj}}(A)$ of left DG-modules over $A$ which generalizes the category of injective modules over a ring. We give many characterizations of this category, generalizing the theory of injective modules, and prove a derived version of the Bass-Papp theorem: the category $\operatorname{\mathsf{Inj}}(A)$ is closed in the derived category $\operatorname{\mathsf{D}}(A)$ under arbitrary direct sums if and only if the ring $\mathrm{H}^0(A)$ is left noetherian and for…
We show that the subgraph of the concave transform of a multiplicative filtration on a section ring is the Newton--Okounkov body of a certain semigroup, and if the filtration is induced by a divisorial valuation, then the associated graded algebra is the algebra of sections of a concrete line bundle in higher dimension. We use this description to give a rationality criterion for certain Seshadri constants. Along the way we introduce Newton--Okounkov bodies of abstract graded semigroups and determine conditions for their slices to be Newton--Okounkov bodies of subsemigroups.
We construct explicitly regular sequences in the semigroup ring $R=\CC[K]$ of lattice points of the graded cone $K$. We conjecture that the quotients of $R$ by these sequences describe locally string-theoretic cohomology of a toroidal singularity associated to $K$. As a byproduct, we give an elementary proof of the result of Hochster that semigroup rings of rational polyhedral cones are Cohen-Macaulay.
