We investigate the submanifold geometry of the orbits of Hermann actions on Riemannian symmetric spaces. After proving that the curvature and shape operators of these orbits commute, we calculate the eigenvalues of the shape operators in terms of the restricted roots. As applications, we get a formula for the volumes of the orbits and a new proof of a Weyl-type integration formula for Hermann actions.
In this paper, we investigate properties of orbits of Hermann actions as submanifolds without assuming the commutability of involutions which define Hermann actions. In particular, we compute the second fundamental form of orbits of Hermann action, and give a sufficient condition for orbits of Hermann action to be weakly reflective (resp. arid) submanifolds.
We give a formula to calculate the indices of special (non-totally geodesic) minimal orbits of Hermann actions. Also, we give examples of such minimal orbits of Hermann actions and calculate their indices by using the formula.
We first investigate the geometry of orbits of the isotropy action on a semi-simple pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space by investigating the complexified action. Next we investigate the geometry of the orbits of Hermann type actions on the symmetric spaces. By considering two special Hermann type actions on the symmetric space, we recognize an interesting structure of the symmetric space.
It is known that an isometric action of a Lie group on a compact symmetric space gives rise to a proper Fredholm action of a path group on a path space via the gauge transformations. In this paper, supposing that the isometric action is a Hermann action (i.e. an isometric action of a symmetric subgroup of the isometry group) we give an explicit formula for the principal curvatures of orbits of the path group action and study the condition for those orbits to be austere, that is, the set of principal curvatures in the direction of each normal vector is invariant under the multiplication by minu…
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for orbits of commutative Hermann actions and actions of the direct product of two symmetric subgroups on compact Lie groups to be biharmonic in terms of symmetric triad with multiplicities. By this criterion, we determine all the proper biharmonic submanifolds in irreducible symmetric spaces of compact type which are singular orbits of commutative Hermann actions of cohomogeneity two. Also, in compact simple Lie groups, we determine all the biharmonic hypersurfaces which are regular orbits of actions of the direct product of two symmetric subgroups…
In this paper, we investigate a curvature-adapted and proper complex equifocal submanifold in a symmetric space of non-compact type. The class of these submanifolds contains principal orbits of Hermann type actions as homogeneous examples. In future, the results in this paper will be used to give a submanifold geometrical characterization of principal orbits of Hermann type actions.
In this paper, we assume that all isoparametric submanifolds have flat section. The main purpose of this paper is to prove that, if a full irreducible complete isoparametric submanifold of codimension greater than one in a symmetric space of non-compact type admits a reflective focal submanifold and if it of real analytic, then it is a principal orbit of a Hermann type action on the symmetric space. A hyperpolar action on a symmetric space of non-compact type admits a reflective singular orbit if and only if it is a Hermann type action. Hence is not extra the assumption that the isoparametric …
In this paper, we investigate the mean curvature flows for an equifocal submanifold in a symmetric space of compact type and its focal submanifolds as initial data. It is known that equifocal submanifolds of codimension greater than one in irreducible symmetric spaces of compact type occur as principal orbits of Hermann actions. However, we investigate the flows conceptionally without use of this fact. Concretely the investigation is performed by investigating the mean curvature flows having the lifts of the submanifolds to an (infinite deiminsional separable) Hilbert space through a Riemannia…
In this paper, we generalize the classification of geodesic orbit spheres from Riemannian geometry to Finsler geometry. Then we further prove if a geodesic orbit Finsler sphere has constant flag curvature, it must be Randers. It provides an alternative proof for the classification of invariant Finsler metrics with $K\equiv1$ on homogeneous spheres other than $Sp(n)/Sp(n-1)$.
The present paper is a continuation of Le Anh Vu's ones [13], [14], [15]. Specifically, the paper is concerned with the subclass of connected and simply connected MD5-groups such that their MD5-algebras $\mathcal{G}$ have the derived ideal ${\mathcal{G}}^{1} : = [ \mathcal{G},\mathcal{G} ]\equiv$ ${\bf{R}}^{3}$. We shall describe the geometry of K-orbits of these MD5-groups. The foliations formed by K-orbits of maximal dimension of these MD5-groups and their measurability are also presented in the paper.
Let $D$ be a set of smooth vector fields on the smooth manifold $M$.It is known that orbits of $D$ are submanifolds of M. Partition $F$ of M into orbits of $D$ is a singular foliation. In this paper we are studying geometry of foliation which is generated by orbits of a family of Killing vector fields. In the case $M=R^3$ it is obtained full geometrical classification of $F$. Throughout this paper the word "smooth" refers to a class $C^\infty$.
Semisimple (co)adjoint orbits through real hyperbolic elements are well-known to be symplectomorphic to cotangent bundles. We provide a new proof of this fact based on elementary results on both Lie theory and symplectic geometry. Our proof establishes a new connection between the Iwasawa horospherical projection and the symplectic geometry of real hyperbolic (co)adjoint orbits.
We develop a holonomy reduction procedure for general Cartan geometries. We show that, given a reduction of holonomy, the underlying manifold naturally decomposes into a disjoint union of initial submanifolds. Each such submanifold corresponds to an orbit of the holonomy group on the modelling homogeneous space and carries a canonical induced Cartan geometry. The result can therefore be understood as a `curved orbit decomposition'. The theory is then applied to the study of several invariant overdetermined differential equations in projective, conformal and CR-geometry. This makes use of an eq…
Using 3-Sasakian reduction techniques we obtain infinite families of new 3-Sasakian manifolds $\scriptstyle{{\cal M}(p_1,p_2,p_3)}$ and $\scriptstyle{{\cal M}(p_1,p_2,p_3,p_4)}$ in dimension 11 and 15 respectively. The metric cone on $\scriptstyle{{\cal M}(p_1,p_2,p_3)}$ is a generalization of the Kronheimer hyperkähler metric on the regular maximal nilpotent orbit of $\scriptstyle{{\Got s}{\Got l}(3,\bbc)}$ whereas the cone on $\scriptstyle{{\cal M}(p_1,p_2,p_3,p_4)}$ generalizes the hyperkähler metric on the 16-dimensional orbit of $\scriptstyle{{\Got s}{\Got o}(6,\bbc)}$. These are first ex…
An action of a Lie algebra $\frak g$ on a manifold $M$ is just a Lie algebra homomorphism $ζ:\frak g\to \frak X(M)$. We define orbits for such an action. In general the space of orbits $M/\frak g$ is not a manifold and even has a bad topology. Nevertheless for a $\frak g$-manifold with equidimensional orbits we treat such notions as connection, curvature, covariant differentiation, Bianchi identity, parallel transport, basic differential forms, basic cohomology, and characteristic classes, which generalize the corresponding notions for principal $G$-bundles. As one of the applications, we deri…
We study the hyperkaehler geometry of a regular semisimple adjoint orbit of SL(k,C) via the algebraic geometry of the corresponding reducible spectral curve.
Following a recent paper by Baryshnikov and Zharnitskii, we consider outer billiards in the plane possessing invariant curves consisting of periodic orbits. We prove the existence and abundance of such tables using tools from sub-Riemannian geometry. We also prove that the set of 3-periodic outer billiard orbits has zero measure.
We study the almost Kaehler geometry of adjoint orbits of non-compact real semisimple Lie groups endowed with the Kirillov-Kostant-Souriau symplectic form and a canonically defined almost complex structure. We give explicit formulas for the Chern-Ricci form, the Hermitian scalar curvature and the Nijenhuis tensor in terms of root data. We also discuss when the Chern-Ricci form is a multiple of the symplectic form, and when compact quotients of these orbits are of Kaehler type.
Let $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ be the special linear group and $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{R})$ its Lie algebra. We study geometric properties associated to the adjoint orbits in the simplest non-trivial case, namely, those of $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$. In particular, we show that just three possibilities arise: either the adjoint orbit is a one-sheeted hyperboloid, or a two-sheeted hyperboloid, or else a cone. In addition, we introduce a specific potential and study the corresponding gradient vector field and its dynamics when we restricted to the adjoint orbit. We conclude by describing th…
We define certain extensions of Jacobi groups of $A_n$, prove an analogue of Chevalley Theorem for their invariants, and construct a Dubrovin Frobenius structure on it orbit space.
This expository article is an introduction to the adjoint orbits of complex semisimple groups, primarily in the algebro-geometric and Lie-theoretic contexts, and with a pronounced emphasis on the properties of semisimple and nilpotent orbits. It is intended to build a foundation for more specialized settings in which adjoint orbits feature prominently (ex. hyperkähler geometry, Landau-Ginzburg models, and the theory of symplectic singularities). Also included are a few arguments and observations that, to the author's knowledge, have not yet appeared in the research literature.
In this paper, we study geometric properties of quotient spaces of proper Lie groupoids. First, we construct a natural stratification on such spaces using an extension of the slice theorem for proper Lie groupoids of Weinstein and Zung. Next, we show the existence of an appropriate metric on the groupoid which gives the associated Lie algebroid the structure of a singular riemannian foliation. With this metric, the orbit space inherits a natural length space structure whose properties are studied. Moreover, we show that the orbit space of a proper Lie groupoid can be triangulated. Finally, we …
The Hilbert manifold $Σ$ consisting of positive invertible (unitized) Hilbert-Schmidt operators has a rich structure and geometry. The geometry of unitary orbits $Ω\subset Σ$ is studied from the topological and metric viewpoints: we seek for conditions that ensure the existence of a smooth local structure for the set $Ω$, and we study the convexity of this set for the geodesic structures that arise when we give $Σ$ two Riemannian metrics.
We investigate the rudiments of Riemannian geometry on orbit spaces $M/G$ for isometric proper actions of Lie groups on Riemannian manifolds. Minimal geodesic arcs are length minimising curves in the metric space $M/G$ and they can hit strata which are more singular only at the end points. This is phrased as convexity result. The geodesic spray, viewed as a (strata-preserving) vector field on $TM/G$, leads to the notion of geodesics in $M/G$ which are projections under $M\to M/G$ of geodesics which are normal to the orbits. It also leads to `ballistic curves' which are projections of the other…
In the first part of this dissertation, we give a new definition of a Laplace operator for Finsler metric as an average, with regard to an angle measure, of the second directional derivatives. This operator is elliptic, symmetric with respect to the Holmes-Thompson volume, and coincides with the usual Laplace--Beltrami operator when the Finsler metric is Riemannian. We compute explicit spectral data for some Katok-Ziller metrics. When the Finsler metric is negatively curved, we show, thanks to a result of Ancona that the Martin boundary is Hölder-homeomorphic to the visual boundary. This allow…
In this paper we survey methods and results of classification of $k$-forms (resp. $k$-vectors on ${\bf R}^n$), understood as description of the orbit space of the standard ${\bf GL}(n, {\bf R})$-action on $Λ^k {\bf R}^{n*}$ (resp. on $Λ^k {\bf R}^n$). We discuss the existence of related geometry defined by differential forms on smooth manifolds. This paper also contains an Appendix by Mikhail Borovoi on Galois cohomology methods for finding real forms of complex orbits.
