Let $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ be the special linear group and $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{R})$ its Lie algebra. We study geometric properties associated to the adjoint orbits in the simplest non-trivial case, namely, those of $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$. In particular, we show that just three possibilities arise: either the adjoint orbit is a one-sheeted hyperboloid, or a two-sheeted hyperboloid, or else a cone.
In addition, we introduce a specific potential and study the corresponding gradient vector field and its dynamics when we restricted to the adjoint orbit. We conclude by describing the symplectic structure on these adjoint orbits coming from the well known Kirillov-Kostant-Souriau symplectic form on coadjoint orbits.
We prove that there exists a geometric bijection between the sets of adjoint and coadjoint orbits of a semidirect product, provided a similar bijection holds for particular subgroups. We also show that under certain conditions the homotopy types of any two orbits in bijection with each other are the same. We apply our theory to the examples of the affine group and the Poincaré group, and discuss the limitations and extent of this result to other groups.
We study the geometrical structure of the coadjoint orbits of an arbitrary complex or real Lie algebra ${\mathfrak g}$ containing some ideal ${\mathfrak n}$. It is shown that any coadjoint orbit in ${\mathfrak g}^*$ is a bundle with the affine subspace of ${\mathfrak g}^*$ as its fibre. This fibre is an isotropic submanifold of the orbit and is defined only by the coadjoint representations of the Lie algebras ${\mathfrak g}$ and ${\mathfrak n}$ on the dual space ${\mathfrak n}^*$. The use of this fact and an application of methods of symplectic geometry give a new insight into the structure of…
We study the transverse Poisson structure to adjoint orbits in a complex semi-simple Lie algebra. The problem is first reduced to the case of nilpotent orbits. We prove then that in suitably chosen quasi-homogeneous coordinates the quasi-degree of the transverse Poisson structure is -2. In the particular case of {\emph subregular} nilpotent orbits we show that the structure may be computed by means of a simple determinantal formula, involving the restriction of the Chevalley invariants on the slice. In addition, using results of Brieskorn and Slodowy, the Poisson structure is reduced to a thre…
Let G denote a closed, connected, self adjoint, noncompact subgroup of GL(n,R), and let d_{R} denote the canonical right invariant Riemannian metric on G. For v in R^{n} let G_{v} = {g in G : g(v) = v}. We obtain algebraically defined upper and lower bounds for the asymptotic growth rate of g --> log |g(v)| / d_{R}(g,G_{v}), and these bounds are sharp if G_{v} is compact. If the lower bound is positive, then the orbit G(v) is closed in R^{n}. The results apply to representations of noncompact semisimple Lie groups G on finite dimensional real vector spaces.
We study the action of a real reductive group $G$ on a real submanifold $X$ of a Kahler manifold $Z$. We suppose that the action of a compact connected Lie group $U$ with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{u}$ extends holomorphically to an action of the complexified group $U^{\mathbb C}$ and that the $U$-action on $Z$ is Hamiltonian. If $G\subset U^{\mathbb C}$ is compatible there exists a gradient map $μ_{\mathfrak p}:X \longrightarrow \mathfrak p$ where $\mathfrak g=\mathfrak k \oplus \mathfrak p$ is a Cartan decomposition of $\mathfrak g$. In this paper we describe compact orbits of parabolic subgroups…
This expository article is an introduction to the adjoint orbits of complex semisimple groups, primarily in the algebro-geometric and Lie-theoretic contexts, and with a pronounced emphasis on the properties of semisimple and nilpotent orbits. It is intended to build a foundation for more specialized settings in which adjoint orbits feature prominently (ex. hyperkähler geometry, Landau-Ginzburg models, and the theory of symplectic singularities). Also included are a few arguments and observations that, to the author's knowledge, have not yet appeared in the research literature.
The geodesic orbit property is useful and interesting in Riemannian geometry. It implies homogeneity and has important classes of Riemannian manifolds as special cases. Those classes include weakly symmetric Riemannian manifolds and naturally reductive Riemannian manifolds. The corresponding results for indefinite metric manifolds are much more delicate than in Riemannian signature, but in the last few years important corresponding structural results were proved for geodesic orbit Lorentz manifolds. Here we carry out a major step in the structural analysis of geodesic orbit Lorentz nilmanifold…
With $(X,\mathfrak{d},\mathfrak{m})$ an $\mathrm{RCD}^*(K,N)$ space for some $K\in\mathbf{R}$, $N\in [1,\infty)$, let $H$ be the self-adjoint Laplacian induced by the underlying Cheeger form. Given $α\in [0,1]$ we introduce the $α$-Kato class of potentials on $(X,\mathfrak{d},\mathfrak{m})$, and given a potential $V:X\to \mathbf{R}$ in this class, with $H_V$ the natural self-adjoint realization of the Schrödinger operator $H+V$ in $L^2(X,\mathfrak{m})$, we use Brownian coupling methods and perturbation theory to prove that for all $t>0$ there exists an explicitly given constant $A(V,K,α,t)<\in…
Let $(Z,ω)$ be a \Keler manifold and let $U$ be a compact connected Lie group with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{u}$ acting on $Z$ and preserving $ω$. We assume that the $U$-action extends holomorphically to an action of the complexified group $U^{\mathbb C}$ and the $U$-action on $Z$ is Hamiltonian. Then there exists a $U$-equivariant momentum map $μ: Z\to \mathfrak{u}$. If $G\subset U^{\mathbb C}$ is a closed subgroup such that the Cartan decomposition $U^{\mathbb C} = U\text{exp}(i\mathfrak{u})$ induces a Cartan decomposition $G = K\text{exp}(\mathfrak{p}),$ where $K = U\cap G$, $\mathfrak{p} = \m…
We study the hyperkaehler geometry of a regular semisimple adjoint orbit of SL(k,C) via the algebraic geometry of the corresponding reducible spectral curve.
In this paper we study geodesics on adjoint orbits of $SL(n,\mathbb{R})$ equipped with $SO(n)$-invariant metrics (maximal compact subgroup). Our main technique is translate this problem into a geometric problem in the tangent bundle of certain $SO(n)$-flag manifolds and describe the geodesics equations with respect to the Sasaki metric on tangent bundle. We also use tools of Lie Theory in order to obtain some explicit description of families of geodesics. We deal with the case of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ in full details.
This work is concerned with Mishchenko-Fomenko subalgebras and their restrictions to the adjoint orbits in a finite-dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebra. In this setting, it is known that each Mishchenko-Fomenko subalgebra restricts to a completely integrable system on every orbit in general position. We improve upon this result, showing that each Mishchenko-Fomenko subalgebra yields a completely integrable system on all regular orbits (i.e. orbits of maximal dimension). Our approach incorporates the theory of regular $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triples and associated Slodowy slices, as developed …
It is known that the Schrödinger flow on a complex Grassmann manifold is equivalent to the matrix non-linear Schrödinger equation and the Ferapontov flow on a principal Adjoint U(n)-orbit is equivalent to the $n$-wave equation. In this paper, we give a systematic method to construct integrable geometric curve flows on Adjoint $U$-orbits from flows in the soliton hierarchy associated to a compact Lie group $U$. There are natural geometric bi-Hamiltonian structures on the space of curves on Adjoint orbits, and they correspond to the order two and three Hamiltonian structures on soliton equations…
The goal of this paper is to clarify connections between Killing fields of constant length on a Rimannian geodesic orbit manifold $(M,g)$ and the structure of its full isometry group. The Lie algebra of the full isometry group of $(M,g)$ is identified with the Lie algebra of Killing fields $\mathfrak{g}$ on $(M,g)$. We prove the following result: If $\mathfrak{a}$ is an abelian ideal of $\mathfrak{g}$, then every Killing field $X\in \mathfrak{a}$ has constant length. On the ground of this assertion we give a new proof of one result of C. Gordon: Every Riemannian geodesic orbit manifold of nonp…
We study the almost Kaehler geometry of adjoint orbits of non-compact real semisimple Lie groups endowed with the Kirillov-Kostant-Souriau symplectic form and a canonically defined almost complex structure. We give explicit formulas for the Chern-Ricci form, the Hermitian scalar curvature and the Nijenhuis tensor in terms of root data. We also discuss when the Chern-Ricci form is a multiple of the symplectic form, and when compact quotients of these orbits are of Kaehler type.
We describe co-adjoint orbits and Casimir functions for two-step free-nilpotent Lie algebras. The symplectic foliation consists of affine subspaces of the Lie coalgebra of different dimensions. Further, we consider left-invariant time-optimal problems on two-step Carnot groups, for which the set of admissible velocities is a strictly convex compactum in the first layer of the Lie algebra containing the origin in its interior. We describe integrals for the vertical subsystem of the Hamiltonian system of Pontryagin maximum principle. Further, we describe constancy and periodicity of solutions to…
Let G be a real compact connected simple Lie group, and g its Lie algebra. We study the problem of determining, from root data, when a sum of adjoint orbits in g, or a product of conjugacy classes in G, contains an open set. Our general methods allow us to determine exactly which sums of adjoint orbits in su(m) and products of conjugacy classes in SU(m) contain an open set, in terms of the highest multiplicities of eigenvalues. For su(m) and SU(m) we show L^2--singular dichotomy: The convolution of invariant measures on adjoint orbits, or conjugacy classes, is either singular to Haar measure o…
We give a coadjoint orbit's diffeomorphic deformation between the classical semisimple case and the semi-direct product given by a Cartan decomposition. The two structures admit the Hermitian symplectic form defined in a semisimple complex Lie algebra. We provide some applications such as the constructions of Lagrangian submanifolds.
Let $G/K$ be an orbit of the adjoint representation of a compact connected Lie group $G$, $σ$ be an involutive automorphism of $G$ and $\tilde G$ be the Lie group of fixed points of $σ$. We find a sufficient condition for the complete integrability of the geodesic flow of the Riemannian metric on $\tilde G/(\tilde G\cap K)$, which is induced by the bi-invariant Riemannian metric on $\tilde G$. The integrals constructed here are real analytic functions, polynomial in momenta. It is checked that this sufficient condition holds when $G$ is the unitary group $U(n)$ and $σ$ is its automorphism defi…
A Lie group $G$ naturally acts on its Lie algebra $\gg$, called the adjoint action. In this paper, we determine the orbit types of the compact exceptional Lie group $G_2$ in its Lie algebra $\gg_2$. As results, the group $G_2$ has four orbit types in the Lie algebra $\gg_2$ as $$ G_2/G_2, \quad G_2/(U(1) \times U(1)), \quad G_2/((Sp(1)\times U(1))/\Z_2), \quad G_2/((U(1)\times Sp(1))/\Z_2). $$ These orbits, especially the last two orbits, are not equivalent, that is, there exists no $G_2$-equivariant homeomorphism among them.
We compare Lagrangian thimbles for the potential of a Landau-Ginzburg model to the Morse theory of its real part. We explore Landau-Ginzburg models defined using Lie theory, constructing their real Lagrangian thimbles explicitly and comparing them to the stable and unstable manifolds of the real gradient flow.
