We study the Cauchy problem for general, nonlinear, strictly hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations in one space variable. First, we re-visit the construction of the solution to the Riemann problem and introduce the notion of a nondegenerate (ND) system. This is the optimal condition guaranteeing, as we show it, that the Riemann problem can be solved with finitely many waves, only; we establish that the ND condition is generic in the sense of Baire (for the Whitney topology), so that any system can be approached by a ND system. Second, we introduce the concept of inner speed variation and we derive new interaction estimates on wave speeds. Third, we design a wave front tracking scheme and establish its strong convergence to the entropy solution of the Cauchy problem; this provides a new existence proof as well as an approximation algorithm. As an application, we investigate the time-regularity of the graph solutions $(X,U)$ introduced by the second author, and propose a geometric version of our scheme; in turn, the spatial component $X$ of a graph solution can be chosen to be continuous in both time and space, while its component $U$ is continuous in space and has bounded variation in time.

We use the Littlewood-Paley decomposition technique to obtain a $C^\infty$-well-posedness result for a weakly hyperbolic equation with a finite order of degeneration
We discuss the well-posedness and decay of Besicovitch almost periodic solutions for a class of nonlinear degenerate anisotropic hyperbolic-parabolic equations. In our definition of weak entropy solution the initial data is only assumed in a weak sense, and in this connection the strong trace of the solution in the initial time hyperplane is also established.
We study a Neumann type initial-boundary value problem for strongly degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations under the nonlinearity-diffusivity condition. We suggest a notion of entropy solution for this problem and prove its uniqueness. The existence of entropy solutions is also discussed.
In this article the unique solution of the Cauchy problem is founded by the Riemann method. Some relations for given here confluent hypergeometric functions of two and three variables are used.
We consider mildly degenerate Kirchhoff equations with a small parameter and a weak dissipation term. We prove the existence of global solutions when the parameter is small with respect to the size of initial data. Then we provide global-in-time error estimates on the difference between the solution of our problem and the solution of the corresponding first order problem.
We prove the well-posedness and the asymptotic decay to the mean value of Besicovitch almost periodic entropy solutions to nonlinear aniso\-tropic degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations. After setting up the problem and its kinetic formulation on the Bohr compact, the main result, that is, the decay property, ia achieved by devising a suitable adaptation of the technique introduced by Chen and Perthame (2009) in their proof of the decay of periodic entropy solutions to the same equations.

We study quasilinear degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic stochastic partial differential equations with general multiplicative noise within the framework of kinetic solutions. Our results are twofold: First, we establish new regularity results based on averaging techniques. Second, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions in a full $L^1$ setting requiring no growth assumptions on the nonlinearities. In addition, we prove a comparison result and an $L^1$-contraction property for the solutions.
We are concerned in this paper with the degenerate fractional diffusion advection equations posed in bounded domains. Due to a suitable formulation, we show the existence of weak entropy solutions for measurable and bounded initial and Dirichlet boundary data. Moreover, we prove a $L^1-$type contraction property for weak entropy solutions obtained via parabolic perturbation. This is a weak selection principle which means that the weak entropy solutions are stable in this class.
In this article we deal with stochastic perturbation of degenerate parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs). The particular emphasise is on analysing the effect of multiplicative Lévy noise to such problems and establishing wellposedness by developing a suitable weak entropy solution framework. The proof of existence is based on the vanishing viscosity technique. The uniqueness is settled by interpreting Kruzkov's doubling technique in the presence noise.
For a degenerate hyperbolic equation of the second kind, and with a spectral parameter are studied the Cauchy problem, Cauchy-Goursat and Goursat in a new class of generalized solutions and is given an example that shows the importance of introducing the concept of such a class. Some operators with Bessel functions in the nucleus are introduced and their basic properties are studied. The important identities of these operators are helped to find an explicit representations of the stated problems.
We consider a mixed type boundary value problem for a class of degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations. Namely, we consider a Cartesian product domain and split its boundary into two parts. In one of them we impose a Dirichlet boundary condition; in the other, we impose a Neumann condition. We apply a normal trace formula for $L^2$-divergence-measure fields to prove a new strong trace property in the part of the boundary where the Neumann condition is imposed. We prove existence and uniqueness of the entropy solution. This is a revised corrected version of the paper published in Arch.\ Ratio…
We are concerned with nonlinear anisotropic degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations with stochastic forcing, which are heterogeneous (i.e., not space-translational invariant). A unified framework is established for the continuous dependence estimates, fractional BV regularity estimates, and well-posedness for stochastic entropy solutions of the nonlinear stochastic degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equation. In particular, we establish the well-posedness of the nonlinear stochastic equation in $L^p \cap N^{κ,1}$ for $p\in (1,\infty)$ and the $κ$--Nikolskii space $N^{κ,1}$ with $κ>0$, and the $…
We are interested in the large-time behavior of periodic entropy solutions in $L^\infty$ to anisotropic degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations of second-order. Unlike the pure hyperbolic case, the nonlinear equation is no longer self-similar invariant and the diffusion term in the equation significantly affects the large-time behavior of solutions; thus the approach developed earlier based on the self-similar scaling does not directly apply. In this paper, we develop another approach for establishing the decay of periodic solutions for anisotropic degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations. …
We consider an $n$-dimensional spherically symmetric, asymptotically Euclidean manifold with two ends and a codimension 1 trapped set which is degenerately hyperbolic. By separating variables and constructing a semiclassical parametrix for a time scale polynomially beyond Ehrenfest time, we show that solutions to the linear Schrödiner equation with initial conditions localized on a spherical harmonic satisfy Strichartz estimates with a loss depending only on the dimension $n$ and independent of the degeneracy. The Strichartz estimates are sharp up to an arbitrary $β>0$ loss. This is in contras…
Well-posedness of the initial boundary value problem for degenerate hyperbolic systems with a localized term and its application to the linearized system for the motion of an inextensible hanging string
We show that in one space dimension, a linearly degenerate hyperbolic system of rich type admits exact traveling wave solutions if the initial data are Riemann type outside of a space interval. In a particular case of the system including physical models, we prove the convergence of entropy solutions to traveling waves in the $L^1$ norm as the time goes to infinity. The traveling waves are determined explicitly in terms of the initial data and the system. We also obtain the stability of entropy solutions in $L^1$.
We consider a degenerate hyperbolic equation of Kirchhoff type with a small parameter epsilon in front of the second-order time-derivative. In a recent paper, under a suitable assumption on initial data, we proved decay-error estimates for the difference between solutions of the hyperbolic problem and the corresponding solutions of the limit parabolic problem. These estimates show in the same time that the difference tends to zero both as epsilon -> 0, and as t -> +infinity. In particular, in that case the difference decays faster than the two terms separately. In this paper we consider the co…
We introduce the notion of pathwise entropy solutions for a class of degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations with non-isotropic nonlinearity and fluxes with rough time dependence and prove their well-posedness. In the case of Brownian noise and periodic boundary conditions, we prove that the pathwise entropy solutions converge to their spatial average and provide an estimate on the rate of convergence. The third main result of the paper is a new regularization result in the spirit of averaging lemmata. This work extends both the framework of pathwise entropy solutions for stochastic scalar c…
We consider the Cauchy problem for a stochastic scalar parabolic-hyperbolic equation in any space dimension with nonlocal, nonlinear, and possibly degenerate diffusion terms. The equations are nonlocal because they involve fractional diffusion operators. We adapt the notion of stochastic entropy solution and provide a new technical framework to prove the uniqueness. The existence proof relies on the vanishing viscosity method. Moreover, using bounded variation (BV) estimates for vanishing viscosity approximations, we derive an explicit continuous dependence estimate on the nonlinearities and d…
We analyze families of primal high-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods for solving degenerate (second-order) elliptic problems. One major trouble regarding this class of PDEs concerns its mathematical nature, which may be nonuniform over the domain. Due to the local degeneracy of the diffusion term, it can be purely hyperbolic in a subregion and elliptic in the rest. This problem is thus quite delicate to solve since the exact solution is discontinuous at interfaces separating both elliptic and hyperbolic parts. The proposed HDG method is developed in a unified and compact …
We consider degenerate Kirchhoff equations with a small parameter epsilon in front of the second-order time-derivative. It is well known that these equations admit global solutions when epsilon is small enough, and that these solutions decay as t -> +infinity with the same rate of solutions of the limit problem (of parabolic type). In this paper we prove decay-error estimates for the difference between a solution of the hyperbolic problem and the solution of the corresponding parabolic problem. These estimates show in the same time that the difference tends to zero both as epsilon -> 0, and as…
We consider a degenerate abstract wave equation with a time-dependent propagation speed. We investigate the influence of a strong dissipation, namely a friction term that depends on a power of the elastic operator. We discover a threshold effect. If the propagation speed is regular enough, then the damping prevails, and therefore the initial value problem is well-posed in Sobolev spaces. Solutions also exhibit a regularizing effect analogous to parabolic problems. As expected, the stronger is the damping, the lower is the required regularity. On the contrary, if the propagation speed is not re…
We establish the well-posedness of an initial-boundary value problem of mixed type for a stochastic nonlinear parabolic-hyperbolic equation on a space domain $\cO=\cO'\X\cO''$ where a Neumann boundary condition is imposed on $\po\cO'\X\cO"$, the hyperbolic boundary, and a Dirichlet condition is imposed on $\cO'\X\po\cO"$, the parabolic boundary. Among other points to be highlighted in our analysis of this problem we mention the new strong trace theorem for the special class of stochastic nonlinear parabolic-hyperbolic equations studied here, which is decisive for the uniqueness of the kinetic …
For first-order quasi-linear systems of partial differential equations, we formulate an assumption of a transition from initial hyperbolicity to ellipticity. This assumption bears on the principal symbol of the first-order operator. Under such an assumption, we prove a strong Hadamard instability for the associated Cauchy problem, namely an instantaneous defect of Hölder continuity of the flow from $G^σ$ to $L^2$, with $0 < σ< σ_0$, the limiting Gevrey index $σ_0$ depending on the nature of the transition. We restrict here to scalar transitions, and non-scalar transitions in which the boundary…
We consider the hyperbolic-parabolic singular perturbation problem for a degenerate quasilinear Kirchhoff equation with weak dissipation. This means that the coefficient of the dissipative term tends to zero when t tends to +infinity. We prove that the hyperbolic problem has a unique global solution for suitable values of the parameters. We also prove that the solution decays to zero, as t tends to +infinity, with the same rate of the solution of the limit problem of parabolic type.
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability of planar stationary solution to an initial-boundary value problem for a two-dimensional hyperbolic-elliptic coupled system of the radiating gas in half space. We show that the solution to the problem converges to the corresponding planar stationary solution as time tends to infinity under small initial perturbation. These results are proved by the standard $L^2$-energy method. Moreover, we prove that the solution $(u,q)$ converges to the corresponding planar stationary solution at the rate $t^{-α/2-1/4}$ for non-degenerate case, and $t^{-1…
We consider the linear degenerate wave equation, on the interval $(0, 1)$ $$ w_{tt} - (x^αw_x)_x = p(t) μ(x) w, $$ with bilinear control $p$ and Neumann boundary conditions. We study the controllability of this nonlinear control system, locally around a constant reference trajectory, the ground state. We prove that, generically with respect to $μ$, any target close to the ground state in the $H^3\times H^2$ topology (suitably adapted to the underlying degenerate operator) is reachable in time $T > \frac{4}{2-α}$, with controls in $L^2((0, T ),\mathbb R)$. Under some classical and generic assum…
Systems of parabolic, possibly degenerate parabolic SPDEs are considered. Existence and uniqueness are established in Sobolev spaces. Similar results are obtained for a class of equations generalizing the deterministic first order symmetric hyperbolic systems.
This paper is a continuation of our previous work [21], where we have established that, for the second-order degenerate hyperbolic equation (\p_t^2-t^mΔ_x)u=f(t,x,u), locally bounded, piecewise smooth solutions u(t,x) exist when the initial data (u,\p_t u)(0,x) belongs to suitable conormal classes. In the present paper, we will study low regularity solutions of higher-order degenerate hyperbolic equations in the category of discontinuous and even unbounded functions. More specifically, we are concerned with the local existence and singularity structure of low regularity solutions of the higher…
We consider a scalar, possibly degenerate parabolic equation with a source term, in several space dimensions. For initial data with bounded variation we prove the existence of solutions to the initial-value problem. Then we show that these solutions converge, in the vanishing-viscosity limit, to the Kruzhkov entropy solution of the corresponding hyperbolic equation. The proof exploits the H-measure compactness in several space dimensions.
The paper describes the qualitative structure of BV entropy solutions of a strictly hyperbolic system of balance laws with characteristic fields either piecewise genuinely nonlinear or linearly degenerate. In particular, we provide an accurate description of the local and global wave-front structure of a BV solution generated by a fractional step scheme combined with a wave-front tracking algorithm. This extends the corresponding results by Binahcini and Yu for strictly hyperbolic systems of conservation laws.
We discuss an alternative approach to the uniformisation problem on surfaces with boundary by representing conformal structures on surfaces $M$ of general type by hyperbolic metrics with boundary curves of constant positive geodesic curvature. In contrast to existing approaches to this problem, the boundary curves of our surfaces $(M,g)$ cannot collapse as the conformal structure degenerates which is important in applications in which $(M,g)$ serves as domain of a PDE with boundary conditions.
Let M = R n or possibly a Riemannian, non compact manifold. We consider semi-excited resonances for a h-differential operator H(x, hD x ; h) on L 2 (M) induced by a non-degenerate periodic orbit $γ$ 0 of semi-hyperbolic type, which is contained in the non critical energy surface {H 0 = 0}. By semi-hyperbolic, we mean that the linearized Poincar{é} map dP 0 associated with $γ$ 0 has at least one eigenvalue of modulus greater (or less) than 1, and one eigenvalue of modulus equal to 1, and by non-degenerate that 1 is not an eigenvalue, which implies a family $γ$(E) with the same properties. It is…
In this paper, we discuss the Cauchy problem for a degenerate parabolic hyperbolic equation with a multiplicative noise. We focus on the existence of a solution. Using nondegenerate smooth approximations, Debussche, Hofmanová and Vovelle [8] proved the existence of a kinetic solution. On the other hand, we propose to construct a sequence of approximations by applying a time splitting method and prove that this converges strongly in $L^1$ to a kinetic solution. This method will somewhat give us not only a simpler and more direct argument but an improvement over the existence result.
We consider the second order Cauchy problem $$u''+m(|A^{1/2}u|^2)Au=0, u(0)=u_{0}, u'(0)=u_{1},$$ where $m:[0,+\infty)\to[0,+\infty)$ is a continuous function, and $A$ is a self-adjoint nonnegative operator with dense domain on a Hilbert space. It is well known that this problem admits local-in-time solutions provided that $u_{0}$ and $u_{1}$ are regular enough, depending on the continuity modulus of $m$, and on the strict/weak hyperbolicity of the equation. We prove that for such initial data $(u_{0},u_{1})$ there exist two pairs of initial data $(\overline{u}_{0},\overline{u}_{1})$, $(\wideh…
We are interested in evolution phenomena on star-like networks composed of several branches which vary considerably in physical properties. The initial boundary value problem for singularly perturbed hyperbolic differential equation on a metric graph is studied. The hyperbolic equation becomes degenerate on a part of the graph as a small parameter goes to zero. In addition, the rates of degeneration may differ in different edges of the graph. Using the boundary layer method the complete asymptotic expansions of solutions are constructed and justified.
This work is concerned with new results on long-time dynamics of a class of hyperbolic evolution equations related to extensible beams with three distinguished nonlocal nonlinear damping terms. In the first possibly degenerate case, the results feature the existence of a family of compact global attractors and a thickness estimate for their Kolmogorov's $\varepsilon$-entropy. Then, in the non-degenerate context, the structure of the helpful nonlocal damping leads to the existence of finite-dimensional compact global and exponential attractors. Lastly, in a degenerate and critical framework, it…
For a class of weakly hyperbolic systems of the form D_t - A(t,x,D_x), where A(t,x,D_x) is a first-order pseudodifferential operator whose principal symbol degenerates like t^{l_*} at time t=0, for some integer l_* \geq 1, well-posedness of the Cauchy problem is proved in an adapted scale of Sobolev spaces. In addition, an upper bound for the loss of regularity that occurs when passing from the Cauchy data to the solutions is established. In examples, this upper bound turns out to be sharp.
