We consider the second order Cauchy problem
$$u''+m(|A^{1/2}u|^2)Au=0, u(0)=u_{0}, u'(0)=u_{1},$$ where $m:[0,+\infty)\to[0,+\infty)$ is a continuous function, and $A$ is a self-adjoint nonnegative operator with dense domain on a Hilbert space. It is well known that this problem admits local-in-time solutions provided that $u_{0}$ and $u_{1}$ are regular enough, depending on the continuity modulus of $m$, and on the strict/weak hyperbolicity of the equation. We prove that for such initial data $(u_{0},u_{1})$ there exist two pairs of initial data $(\overline{u}_{0},\overline{u}_{1})$, $(\widehat{u}_{0},\widehat{u}_{1})$ for which the solution is global, and such that $u_{0}=\overline{u}_{0}+\widehat{u}_{0}$, $u_{1}=\overline{u}_{1}+\widehat{u}_{1}$. This is a byproduct of a global existence result for initial data with a suitable spectral gap, which extends previous results obtained in the strictly hyperbolic case with a smooth nonlinearity $m$.
For a degenerate autonomous Kirchhoff equation which is set on $\mathbb{R}^N$ and involves the Berestycki-Lions type nonlinearity, we cope with the cases $N=2,3$ and $N\geq5$ by using mountain pass and symmetric mountain pass approaches and by using Clark theorem respectively.
We consider mildly degenerate Kirchhoff equations with a small parameter and a weak dissipation term. We prove the existence of global solutions when the parameter is small with respect to the size of initial data. Then we provide global-in-time error estimates on the difference between the solution of our problem and the solution of the corresponding first order problem.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the mildly degenerate Kirchhoff equation with a dissipative term. We obtain a new estimate on second-in-time derivative of the solution. Moreover we renormalize the solution in such a way that the renormalization as a no zero limit as t goes to infinity. Finally we calculate explicitly the norm of this limit and we prove that it does not depend on the initial data.
We consider the hyperbolic-parabolic singular perturbation problem for a degenerate quasilinear Kirchhoff equation with weak dissipation. This means that the coefficient of the dissipative term tends to zero when t tends to +infinity. We prove that the hyperbolic problem has a unique global solution for suitable values of the parameters. We also prove that the solution decays to zero, as t tends to +infinity, with the same rate of the solution of the limit problem of parabolic type.
In this paper we study the geometry of certain functionals associated to quasilinear elliptic boundary value problems with a degenerate nonlocal term of Kirchhoff type. Due to the degeneration of the nonlocal term it is not possible to directly use classical results such as uniform a-priori estimates and "Sobolev versus Hölder local minimizers" type of results. We prove that results similar to these hold true or not, depending on how degenerate the problem is. We apply our findings in order to show existence and multiplicity of solutions for the associated quasilinear equations, considering se…
We consider degenerate Kirchhoff equations with a small parameter epsilon in front of the second-order time-derivative. It is well known that these equations admit global solutions when epsilon is small enough, and that these solutions decay as t -> +infinity with the same rate of solutions of the limit problem (of parabolic type). In this paper we prove decay-error estimates for the difference between a solution of the hyperbolic problem and the solution of the corresponding parabolic problem. These estimates show in the same time that the difference tends to zero both as epsilon -> 0, and as…
In this paper, we study multiplicity results for double phase problems of Kirchhoff type with right-hand sides that include a parametric singular term and a nonlinear term of subcritical growth. Under very general assumptions on the data, we prove the existence of at least two weak solutions that have different energy sign. Our treatment is based on the fibering method in form of the Nehari manifold. We point out that we cover both the non-degenerate as well as the degenerate Kirchhoff case in our setting.
In this paper we study the existence, multiplicity and regularity of positive weak solutions for the following Kirchhoff-Choquard problem: \begin{equation*} \begin{array}{cc} \displaystyle M\left( \iint\limits_{\mathbb{R}^{2N}} \frac{|u(x)-u(y)|^2}{|x-y|^{N+2s}}\,dxdy\right) (-Δ)^s u = \fracλ{u^γ} + \left( \int\limits_Ω \frac{|u(y)|^{2^{*}_{μ,s}}}{|x-y|^ μ}\, dy\right) |u|^{2^{*}_{μ,s}-2}u \;\text{in} \; Ω, %\quad \quad u > 0\quad \text{in} \; Ω, \quad \quad u = 0\quad \text{in} \; \mathbb{R}^{N}\backslashΩ, \end{array} \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is open bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ with …
This paper deals with the following degenerate fractional Kirchhoff-type system with magnetic fields and critical growth: $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{lll} -\mathfrak{M}(\|u\|_{s,A}^2)[(-Δ)^s_Au+u] = G_u(|x|,|u|^2,|v|^2) + \left(\mathcal{I}_μ*|u|^{p^*}\right)|u|^{p^*-2}u \ &\mbox{in}\,\,\mathbb{R}^N,\\ \mathfrak{M}(\|v\|_{s,A})[(-Δ)^s_Av+v] = G_v(|x|,|u|^2,|v|^2) + \left(\mathcal{I}_μ*|v|^{p^*}\right)|v|^{p^*-2}v \ &\mbox{in}\,\,\mathbb{R}^N, \end{array}\right. $$ where $$\|u\|_{s,A}=\left(\iint_{\mathbb{R}^{2N}}\frac{|u(x)-e^{i(x-y)\cdot A(\frac{x+y}{2})}u(y)|^2}{|x-y|^{N+2s}}dx dy+\int_{\mathbb{…
This paper deals with the existence and the asymptotic behavior of non-negative solutions for a class of stationary Kirchhoff problems driven by a fractional integro-differential operator $\mathcal L_K$ and involving a critical nonlinearity. The main feature, as well as the main difficulty, of the analysis is the fact that the Kirchhoff function $M$ can be zero at zero, that is the problem is degenerate. The adopted techniques are variational and the main theorems extend in several directions previous results recently appeared in the literature.
In this note we present some recent results for Kirchhoff equations in generalized Gevrey spaces. We show that these spaces are the natural framework where classical results can be unified and extended. In particular we focus on existence and uniqueness results for initial data whose regularity depends on the continuity modulus of the nonlinear term, both in the strictly hyperbolic case, and in the degenerate hyperbolic case.
We prove that the classical hyperbolic Kirchhoff equation admits global-in-time solutions for some classes of initial data in the energy space. We also show that there are enough such solutions so that every initial datum in the energy space is the sum of two initial data for which a global-in-time solution exists. The proof relies on the notion of spectral gap data, namely initial data whose components vanish for large intervals of frequencies. We do not pass through the linearized equation, because it is not well-posed at this low level of regularity.
In a celebrated paper (Tokyo J. Math. 1984) K. Nishihara proved global existence for Kirchhoff equations in a special class of initial data which lies in between analytic functions and Gevrey spaces. This class was defined in terms of Fourier components with weights satisfying suitable convexity and integrability conditions. In this paper we extend this result by removing the convexity constraint, and by replacing Nishihara's integrability condition with the simpler integrability condition which appears in the usual characterization of quasi-analytic functions. After the convexity assumptions …
In this paper we establish the existence of at least two weak solutions for the following fractional Kirchhoff problem involving singular and exponential nonlinearity \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{split} M\left(\|u\|^{\frac{n}{s}}\right)(-Δ)^s_{n/s}u & = μu^{-q}+ u^{r-1}\exp( u^β)\;\text{in}\;\Om, u&>0,\;\text{in}\; \Om, u &= 0,\;\text{in}\; \mb R^n \setminus{\Om}, \end{split} \right. \end{equation*} where $\Om$ is smooth bounded domain in $\mb R^n$, {$n\geq 1$}, $s\in (0,1)$, $μ>0$ is a real parameter, $β<\frac{n}{n-s}$ and $q\in (0,1)$. We have considered the degenerate Kirchhoff case here…
This paper is devoted to the study of the following autonomous Kirchhoff-type equation $$-M\left(\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|\nabla{u}|^2\right)Δ{u}= f(u),~~~~u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N),$$ where $M$ is a continuous non-degenerate function and $N\geq2$. Under suitable additional conditions on $M$ and general Berestycki-Lions type assumptions on the nonlinearity $f$, we establish several existence results of multiple solutions by variational methods, which are also naturally interpreted from a non-variational point of view.
In this paper we consider the following critical nonlocal problem $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} M\left(\displaystyle\iint_{\mathbb{R}^{2N}}\frac{|u(x)-u(y)|^2}{|x-y|^{N+2s}}dxdy\right)(-Δ)^s u = \displaystyle\fracλ{u^γ}+u^{2^*_s-1}&\quad\mbox{in } Ω,\\ u>0&\quad\mbox{in } Ω,\\ u=0&\quad\mbox{in } \mathbb{R}^N\setminusΩ, \end{array}\right. $$ where $Ω$ is an open bounded subset of $\mathbb R^N$ with continuous boundary, dimension $N>2s$ with parameter $s\in (0,1)$, $2^*_s=2N/(N-2s)$ is the fractional critical Sobolev exponent, $λ>0$ is a real parameter, exponent $γ\in(0,1)$, $M$ models a Kirchhof…
We consider Kirchhoff equations with strong damping, namely with a friction term which depends on a power of the "elastic" operator. We address local and global existence of solutions in two different regimes depending on the exponent in the friction term. When the exponent is greater than 1/2, the dissipation prevails, and we obtain global existence in the energy space assuming only degenerate hyperbolicity and continuity of the nonlinear term. When the exponent is less than 1/2, we assume strict hyperbolicity and we consider a phase space depending on the continuity modulus of the nonlinear …
This is a new version of our previous work. In this version, we fill a gap included in the original proof of Theorem 1.1 in our previous paper entitled "An iterative method for Kirchhoff type equations and its applications".
We establish a continuous embedding $W^{s(\cdot),2}(Ω)\hookrightarrow L^{α(\cdot)}(Ω)$, where the variable exponent $α(x)$ can be close to the critical exponent $2_{s}^*(x)=\frac{2N}{N-2\bar{s}(x)}$, with $\bar{s}(x)=s(x,x)$ for all $x\in\barΩ$. Subsequently, this continuous embedding is used to prove the multiplicity of solutions for critical nonlocal degenerate Kirchhoff problems with a variable singular exponent. Moreover, we also obtain the uniform $L^{\infty}$-estimate of these infinite solutions by a bootstrap argument.
In the paper under study, we consider the following coupled non-degenerate Kirchhoff system \begin{equation}\label{P} \left \{ \begin{aligned} &\displaystyle y_{tt}-\upvarphi\Big(\int_Ω| \nabla y |^2\,dx\Big)Δy +\upalpha Δ\uptheta=0, &\mbox{ in }&\; Ω\times (0, +\infty)\\ &\displaystyle \uptheta_t-Δ\uptheta-\upbeta Δy_t =0, &\mbox{ in }&\; Ω\times (0, +\infty)\\ &\displaystyle y=\uptheta=0,\; &\mbox{ on }&\;\partialΩ\times(0, +\infty)\\ %&\displaystyle y=0,\; &\mbox{ on }&\;\partialΩ\times(0, +\infty)\\ %&\displaystyle \partial_νy=0, &\mbox{ on }&\;Γ_1\times(0, +\infty)\\ &\displaystyle y(\cdo…
In this paper we propose a counterexample to the validity of the Comparison Principle and of the Sub and Supersolution Method for nonlocal problems like the stationary Kirchhoff Equation. This counterexample shows that in general smooth bounded domains in any dimension, these properties cannot hold true if the nonlinear nonlocal term $M(\|u\|^2)$ is somewhere increasing with respect to the $H_0^1$-norm of the solution. Comparing with existing results, this fills a gap between known conditions on $M$ that guarantee or prevent these properties, and leads to a condition which is necessary and suf…
In this paper, we provide a complete blow-up picture for solution sequences to an elliptic sinh-Poisson equation with variable intensities arising in the context of the statistical mechanics description of two-dimensional turbulence, as initiated by Onsager. The vortex intensities are described in terms of a probability measure defined on the interval. Under Dirichlet boundary conditions we establish the exclusion of boundary blowup points, we show that the concentration mass does not have residual L1-terms and we determine the location of blowup points in terms of Kirchhoff's Hamiltonian. We …
A paper, entitled "Well-posedness and optimal decay rates for the viscoelastic Kirchhoff equation" was published in 2016, in the journal Boletim da Sociedade Paranaense de Matematica. The main results of that paper are stated in Theorem 1.3. Section 2 is devoted to stability estimates for the solutions of the Galerkin approximation (2.1)-(2.2) of (1.2). Section 3 is devoted to the proof of the well-posedness for the Kirchhoff equation (1.2). This rebuttal is written in view to show the major flaws, and gaps in the proofs of this publication.
We consider a degenerate hyperbolic equation of Kirchhoff type with a small parameter epsilon in front of the second-order time-derivative. In a recent paper, under a suitable assumption on initial data, we proved decay-error estimates for the difference between solutions of the hyperbolic problem and the corresponding solutions of the limit parabolic problem. These estimates show in the same time that the difference tends to zero both as epsilon -> 0, and as t -> +infinity. In particular, in that case the difference decays faster than the two terms separately. In this paper we consider the co…
We investigate a connection between solvability of the Dirichlet problem for an infinitely degenerate elliptic operator and the validity of an Orlicz-Sobolev inequality in the associated subunit metric space. For subelliptic operators it is known that the classical Sobolev inequality is sufficient and almost necessary for the Dirichlet problem to be solvable with a quantitative bound on the solution [11]. When the degeneracy is of infinite type, a weaker Orlicz-Sobolev inequality seems to be the right substitute [7]. In this paper we investigate this connection further and reduce the gap betwe…
We continue our study of a magnetic Schrödinger operator on a two-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold in the case when the minimal value of the module of the magnetic field is strictly positive. We analyze the case when the magnetic field has degenerate magnetic wells. The main result of the paper is an asymptotics of the groundstate energy of the operator in the semiclassical limit. The upper bounds are improved in the case when we have a localization by a miniwell effect of lowest order. These results are applied to prove the existence of an arbitrary large number of spectral gaps in the…

We consider a two-dimensional periodic Schrödinger operator $H=-Δ+W$ with $Γ$ being the lattice of periods. We investigate the structure of the edges of open gaps in the spectrum of $H$. We show that under arbitrary small perturbation $V$ periodic with respect to $NΓ$ where $N=N(W)$ is some integer, all edges of the gaps in the spectrum of $H+V$ which are perturbation of the gaps of $H$ become non-degenerate, i.e. are attained at finitely many points by one band function only and have non-degenerate quadratic minimum/maximum. We also discuss this problem in the discrete setting and show that c…
It has been unknown in kinetic theory whether the linearized Boltzmann or Landau equation with soft potentials admits a spectral gap in the spatially inhomogeneous setting. Most of existing works indicate a negative answer because the spectrum of two linearized self-adjoint collision operators is accumulated to the origin in case of soft interactions. In the paper we rather prove it in an affirmative way when the space domain is bounded with an inflow boundary condition. The key strategy is to introduce a new Hilbert space with an exponential weight function that involves the inner product of …
