This paper is an up-to-date introduction to the problem of uniqueness versus non-uniqueness of infinite clusters for percolation on ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$ and, more generally, on transitive graphs. For iid percolation on ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$, uniqueness of the infinite cluster is a classical result, while on certain other transitive graphs uniqueness may fail. Key properties of the graphs in this context turn out to be amenability and nonamenability. The same problem is considered for certain dependent percolation models -- most prominently the Fortuin--Kasteleyn random-cluster model -- and in situations where the standard connectivity notion is replaced by entanglement or rigidity. So-called simultaneous uniqueness in couplings of percolation processes is also considered. Some of the main results are proved in detail, while for others the proofs are merely sketched, and for yet others they are omitted. Several open problems are discussed.
We consider Bernoulli bond percolation on the product graph of a regular tree and a line. We show that the triangle condition does not hold at the uniqueness threshold.
We prove that the critical percolation parameter for Finitary Random Interlacements (FRI) is continuous with respect to the path length parameter $T$. The proof uses a result which is interesting on its own right; equality of natural critical parameters for FRI percolation phase transition.
We show that there exists a connected graph G with subexponential volume growth such that critical percolation on the product of G with the line has infinitely many infinite clusters. We also give some conditions under which this cannot occur.
In this paper, we alternately obtain the almost sure uniqueness of the infinite open cluster in bond percolation in $\mathbb{Z}^d, d \geq 2,$ without requiring the use of ergodicity of translation action. If $N$ denotes the number of infinite open clusters, we use the Burton-Keane argument to get $N \in \{0,1,2\}$ a.s. and then use a pivotal edges argument to obtain that $N \in \{0,1\}$ a.s.
We prove that the critical probability for the Sierpinski carpet lattice in two dimensions is uniquely determined. The transition is sharp. This extends the Kumagai's result to the original Sierpinski carpet lattice.
We consider the Poisson Boolean model of continuum percolation on a homogeneous Riemannian manifold $M$. Let $lambda$ be intensity of the Poisson process in the model and let $lambda_u$ be the infimum of the set of intensities that a.s. produce a unique unbounded component. We show that above $λ_u$ there is a.s. a unique unbounded component. We also study what happens at $λ_u$ for some spaces. In particular, if $M$ is the product of the hyperbolic disc and the real line, then at $λ_u$ there is a.s. not a unique unbounded component. The results are inspired by results for Bernoulli bond percola…
We consider a continuum percolation model on $\R^d$, $d\geq 1$.For $t,λ\in (0,\infty)$ and $d\in\{1,2,3\}$, the occupied set is given by the union of independent Brownian paths running up to time $t$ whoseinitial points form a Poisson point process with intensity $λ\textgreater{}0$.When $d\geq 4$, the Brownian paths are replaced by Wiener sausageswith radius $r\textgreater{}0$.We establish that, for $d=1$ and all choices of $t$, no percolation occurs, whereas for $d\geq 2$, there is a non-trivial percolation transitionin $t$, provided $λ$ and $r$ are chosen properly. The last statement means tha…
The main purpose of this paper is to introduce and establish basic results of a natural extension of the classical Boolean percolation model (also known as the Gilbert disc model). We replace the balls of that model by a positive non-increasing attenuation function $l:(0,\infty) \to (0,\infty)$ to create the random field $Ψ(y)=\sum_{x\in η}l(|x-y|),$ where $η$ is a homogeneous Poisson process in ${\mathbb R}^d.$ The field $Ψ$ is then a random potential field with infinite range dependencies whenever the support of the function $l$ is unbounded. In particular, we study the level sets $Ψ_{\geq h…
In this thesis, I am going to consider Bernoulli percolation on graphs admitting vertex-transitive actions of groups of isometries of d-dimensional hyperbolic spaces H^d. In the first chapter, I give an overview concerning percolation and its terminology. In the separate introduction to each of the other chapters, I explain its contents more precisely, giving also some preliminaries needed therein. In the second chapter, I prove the existence of a non-trivial non-uniqueness phase of Bernoulli percolation on Cayley graphs for a wide class of Coxeter reflection groups of finite type polyhedra in…
We show existence, uniqueness, and directedness properties for infinite geodesics in the FPP model. After giving the fundamental definitions, we describe results by Newman and collaborators giving existence and uniqueness of directed geodesics under an unproven curvature assumption. We then give two proofs of the existence of at least two infinite geodesics under no unproven assumptions. In the final two sections, we give proofs of directedness statements for infinite geodesics using more recent methods which give information even under no unproven assumptions and prove a generalized uniquenes…
We consider the supercritical oriented percolation model. Let ${\fK}$ be all the percolation points. For each $u\in {\fK}$, we write $γ_u$ as its right-most path. Let $G=\cup_u γ_u$. In this paper, we show that $G$ is a single tree with only one topological end. We also present a relationship between ${\fK}$ and $G$ and construct a bijection between ${\fK}$ and $\Z$ using the preorder traversal algorithm. Through applications of this fundamental graph property, we show the uniqueness of an infinite oriented cluster by ignoring finite vertices.
We prove that the heavy clusters are indistinguishable for Bernoulli percolation on quasi-transitive nonunimodular graphs. As an application, we show that the uniqueness threshold of any quasi-transitive graph is also the threshold for connectivity decay. This resolves a question of Lyons and Schramm (1999) in the Bernoulli percolation case and confirms a conjecture of Schonmann (2001). We also prove that every infinite cluster of Bernoulli percolation on a nonamenable quasi-transitive graph is transient almost surely.
Let $ \mathbb{L}^{d} = ( \mathbb{Z}^{d},\mathbb{E}^{d} ) $ be the $ d $-dimensional hypercubic lattice. We consider a model of inhomogeneous Bernoulli percolation on $ \mathbb{L}^{d} $ in which every edge inside the $ s $-dimensional hyperplane $ \mathbb{Z}^{s} \times \{ 0 \}^{d-s} $, $ 2 \leq s < d $, is open with probability $ q $ and every other edge is open with probability $ p $. We prove the uniqueness of the infinite cluster in the supercritical regime whenever $ p \neq p_{c}(d) $, where $ p_{c}(d) $ denotes the threshold for homogeneous percolation, and that the critical point $ (p,q_{…
Disagreement percolation connects a Gibbs lattice gas and i.i.d. site percolation on the same lattice such that non-percolation implies uniqueness of the Gibbs measure. This work generalises disagreement percolation to the hard-sphere model and the Boolean model. Non-percolation of the Boolean model implies the uniqueness of the Gibbs measure and exponential decay of pair correlations and finite volume errors. Hence, lower bounds on the critical intensity for percolation of the Boolean model imply lower bounds on the critical activity for a (potential) phase transition. These lower bounds impr…
This paper has been withdrawn by the author because of finding a flaw in the proof of endogeny for the Frozen Percolation RDE which was one of two examples discussed in this paper. The other example is correct and can be obtained from the work "Bivariate Uniqueness and Endogeny for the Logistic Recursive Distributional Equation" of the author. At the current moment we believe that endogeny is false for the Frozen Percolation RDE. Fresh simulations done independently by the author and David J. Aldous suggest non-endogeny. Although a rigorous proof is yet to be found. It is interesting to note t…
In this note we investigate the last passage percolation model in the presence of macroscopic inhomogeneity. We analyze how this affects the scaling limit of the passage time, leading to a variational problem that provides an ODE for the deterministic limiting shape of the maximal path. We obtain a sufficient analytical condition for uniqueness of the solution for the variational problem. Consequences for the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process are discussed.
We consider the Boolean model with random radii based on Cox point processes. Under a condition of stabilization for the random environment, we establish existence and non-existence of subcritical regimes for the size of the cluster at the origin in terms of volume, diameter and number of points. Further, we prove uniqueness of the infinite cluster for sufficiently connected environments.
We show that when percolation produces infinitely many infinite clusters on a Cayley graph, one cannot distinguish the clusters from each other by any invariantly defined property. This implies that uniqueness of the infinite cluster is equivalent to non-decay of connectivity (a.k.a. long-range order). We then derive applications concerning uniqueness in Kazhdan groups and in wreath products, and inequalities for $p_u$.
In the present paper I consider Cayley graphs of reflection groups of finite-sided Coxeter polyhedra in 3-dimensional hyperbolic space H^3, with standard sets of generators. As the main result, I prove the existence of non-trivial non-uniqueness phase of bond and site Bernoulli percolation on such graphs, i.e. that p_c < p_u, for two classes of such polyhedra: * for any k-hedra as above with k at least 13; * for any compact right-angled polyhedra as above. I also establish a natural lower bound for the growth rate of such Cayley graphs (when the number of faces of the polyhedron is at least 6;…
Under some general assumptions, we construct the scaling limit of open clusters and their associated counting measures in a class of two dimensional percolation models. Our results apply, in particular, to critical Bernoulli site percolation on the triangular lattice and to the critical FK-Ising model on the square lattice. Fundamental properties of the scaling limit, such as conformal covariance, are explored. As an application to Bernoulli percolation, we obtain the scaling limit of the largest cluster in a bounded domain. We also apply our results to the critical, two-dimensional Ising mode…
We present a uniqueness result for Gibbs point processes with interactions that come from a non-negative pair potential; in particular, we provide an explicit uniqueness region in terms of activity $z$ and inverse temperature $β$. The technique used relies on applying to the continuous setting the classical Dobrushin criterion. We also present a comparison to the two other uniqueness methods of cluster expansion and disagreement percolation, which can also be applied for this type of interactions.
In this paper we establish some relations between percolation on a given graph G and its geometry. Our main result shows that, if G has polynomial growth and satisfies what we call the local isoperimetric inequality of dimension d > 1, then p_c(G) < 1. This gives a partial answer to a question of Benjamini and Schramm. As a consequence of this result we derive, under the additional condition of bounded degree, that these graphs also undergo a non-trivial phase transition for the Ising-Model, the Widom-Rowlinson model and the beach model. Our techniques are also applied to dependent percolation…
We study Bernoulli bond percolation on nonunimodular quasi-transitive graphs, and more generally graphs whose automorphism group has a nonunimodular quasi-transitive subgroup. We prove that percolation on any such graph has a non-empty phase in which there are infinite light clusters, which implies the existence of a non-empty phase in which there are infinitely many infinite clusters. That is, we show that $p_c<p_h \leq p_u$ for any such graph. This answers a question of Haggstrom, Peres, and Schonmann (1999), and verifies the nonunimodular case of a well-known conjecture of Benjamini and Sch…
We prove the existence of semi-infinite geodesics for Brownian last-passage percolation (BLPP). Specifically, on a single event of probability one, there exist semi-infinite geodesics started from every space-time point and traveling in every asymptotic direction. Properties of these geodesics include uniqueness for a fixed initial point and direction, non-uniqueness for fixed direction but random initial points, and coalescence of all geodesics traveling in a common, fixed direction. Along the way, we prove that for fixed northeast and southwest directions, there almost surely exist no bi-inf…
In this survey article we consider the directed last-passage percolation model on the planar square lattice with nearest-neighbor steps and general i.i.d. weights on the vertices, outside of the class of exactly solvable models. We show how stationary cocycles are constructed from queueing fixed points and how these cocycles characterize the limit shape, yield existence of Busemann functions in directions where the shape has some regularity, describe the direction of the competition interface, and answer questions on existence, uniqueness, and coalescence of directional semi-infinite geodesics…
We consider the bond percolation model on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ ($d\ge 2$) with the constraint to be fully connected. Each edge is open with probability $p\in(0,1)$, closed with probability $1-p$ and then the process is conditioned to have a unique open connected component (bounded or unbounded). The model is defined on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ by passing to the limit for a sequence of finite volume models with general boundary conditions. Several questions and problems are investigated: existence, uniqueness, phase transition, DLR equations. Our main result involves the existence of a threshold $0…
We consider the model of random interlacements on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ introduced in Sznitman [Vacant set of random interlacements and percolation (2007) preprint]. For this model, we prove the uniqueness of the infinite component of the vacant set. As a consequence, we derive the continuity in $u$ of the probability that the origin belongs to the infinite component of the vacant set at level $u$ in the supercritical phase $u<u_*$.
In this paper, we study geometric properties of the unique infinite cluster $Γ$ in a sufficiently supercritical Finitary Random Interlacements $\mathcal{FI}^{u,T}$ in $\mathbb{Z}^d, \ d\ge 3$. We prove that the chemical distance in $Γ$ is, with stretched exponentially high probability, of the same order as the Euclidean distance in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. This also implies a shape theorem parallel to those for Bernoulli percolation and random interlacements. We also prove local uniqueness of $\mathcal{FI}^{u,T}$, which says any two large clusters in $\mathcal{FI}^{u,T}$ "close to each other" will with…
We prove quenched invariance principle for simple random walk on the unique infinite percolation cluster for a general class of percolation models on Z^d, d>=2, with long-range correlations introduced in arXiv:1212.2885, solving one of the open problems from there. This gives new results for random interlacements in dimension d>=3 at every level, as well as for the vacant set of random interlacements and the level sets of the Gaussian free field in the regime of the so-called local uniqueness (which is believed to coincide with the whole supercritical regime). An essential ingredient of our pr…
Let f be a stationary isotropic non-degenerate Gaussian field on R^2. Assume that f = q * W where q is both C^2 and L^2 and W is the L^2 white noise on R^2. We extend a result by Stephen Muirhead and Hugo Vanneuville by showing that, assuming that q * q is pointwise non-negative and has fast enough decay, the set {f > -l} percolates with probability one when l > 0 and with probability zero if l < 0 or l = 0. We also prove exponential decay of crossing probabilities and uniqueness of the unbounded cluster. To this end, we study a Gaussian field g defined on the torus and establish a superconcen…
The Widom-Rowlinson model (or the Area-interaction model) is a Gibbs point process in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with the formal Hamiltonian $H(ω)=\text{Volume}(\cup_{x\inω} B_1(x))$, where $ω$ is a locally finite configuration of points and $B_1(x)$ denotes the unit closed ball centred at $x$. The model is tuned by two parameters: the activity $z>0$ and the inverse temperature $β\ge 0$. We investigate the phase transition of the model in the point of view of percolation theory and the liquid-gas transition. First, considering the graph connecting points with distance smaller than $2r>0$, we show that for…
The main goal of this paper is to answer question 1.10 and settle conjecture 1.11 of Benjamini-Lyons-Schramm [BLS99] relating harmonic Dirichlet functions on a graph to those of the infinite clusters in the uniqueness phase of Bernoulli percolation. We extend the result to more general invariant percolations, including the Random-Cluster model. We prove the existence of the nonuniqueness phase for the Bernoulli percolation (and make some progress for Random-Cluster model) on unimodular transitive locally finite graphs admitting nonconstant harmonic Dirichlet functions. This is done by using th…
For independent nearest-neighbour bond percolation on Z^d with d >> 6, we prove that the incipient infinite cluster's two-point function and three-point function converge to those of integrated super-Brownian excursion (ISE) in the scaling limit. The proof is based on an extension of the new expansion for percolation derived in a previous paper, and involves treating the magnetic field as a complex variable. A special case of our result for the two-point function implies that the probability that the cluster of the origin consists of n sites, at the critical point, is given by a multiple of n^…
Let H_n be the hypercube {0,1}^n, and let H_{n,p} denote the same graph with Bernoulli bond percolation with parameter p=n^-α. It is shown that at α=1/2 there is a phase transition for the metric distortion between H_n and H_{n,p}. For α<1/2, asymptotically there is a map from H_n to H_{n,p} with constant distortion (depending only on α). For α>1/2 the distortion tends to infinity as a power of n. We indicate the similarity to the existence of a non-uniqueness phase in the context of infinite nonamenable graphs.
Zhang found a simple, elegant argument deducing the non-existence of an infinite open cluster in certain lattice percolation models (for example, p=1/2 bond percolation on the square lattice) from general results on the uniqueness of an infinite open cluster when it exists; this argument requires some symmetry. Here we show that a simple modification of Zhang's argument requires only 2-fold (or 3-fold) symmetry, proving that the critical probabilities for percolation on dual planar lattices with such symmetry sum to 1. Like Zhang's argument, our extension applies in many contexts; in particula…
We study site percolation on a sequence of graphs $\{G_n\}_{n\geq1}$ on $n$ vertices where degree of each vertex is in the interval $(np -a_n, np+a_n)$ and the co-degree of every pair of vertices is at most ${n}p^2+ b_n$, where $p \in (0,1)$ and $\{a_n\}_{n\geq1}$, $\{b_n\}_{n\geq1}$ are sequences of real numbers. Under suitable conditions on $p \in (0,1)$, $a_n$'s and $b_n$'s we show that site percolation on these sequences of graphs undergo a sharp phase transition at $\frac{1}{np}$. More precisely for $\varepsilon>0$, we form a random set $R(ρ_n)$ by including each vertex of $G_n$ independe…
Techniques of `dynamic renormalization', developed earlier for undirected percolation and the contact model, are adapted to the setting of directed percolation, thereby obtaining solutions of several problems for directed percolation on $Z^d$ where $d \ge 2$. The first new result is a type of uniqueness theorem: for every pair $x$ and $y$ of vertices which lie in infinite open paths, there exists almost surely a third vertex $z$ which is joined to infinity and which is attainable from $x$ and $y$ along directed open paths. Secondly, it is proved that a random walk on an infinite directed clust…
We use invasion percolation to compute numerical values for bond and site percolation thresholds $p_c$ (existence of an infinite cluster) and $p_u$ (uniqueness of the infinite cluster) of tesselations $\{P,Q\}$ of the hyperbolic plane, where $Q$ faces meet at each vertex and each face is a $P$-gon. Our values are accurate to six or seven decimal places, allowing us to explore their functional dependency on $P$ and $Q$ and to numerically compute critical exponents. We also prove rigorous upper and lower bounds for $p_c$ and $p_u$ that can be used to find the scaling of both thresholds as a func…
In this note we show that percolation on non-amenable Cayley graphs of high girth has a phase of non-uniqueness, i.e., p_c < p_u. Furthermore, we show that percolation and self-avoiding walk on such graphs have mean-field critical exponents. In particular, the self-avoiding walk has positive speed.
This paper introduces a new percolation model motivated from polymer materials. The mathematical model is defined over a random cubical set in the $d$-dimensional space $\mathbb{R}^d$ and focuses on generations and percolations of $(d-1)$-dimensional holes as higher dimensional topological objects. Here, the random cubical set is constructed by the union of unit faces in dimension $d-1$ which appear randomly and independently with probability $p$, and holes are formulated by the homology generators. Under this model, the upper and lower estimates of the critical probability $p_c^{\rm hole}$ of…
The Burton--Keane theorem for the almost-sure uniqueness of infinite clusters is a landmark of stochastic geometry. Let $μ$ be a translation-invariant probability measure with the finite-energy property on the edge-set of a $d$-dimensional lattice. The theorem states that the number $I$ of infinite components satisfies $μ(I\in\{0,1\})=1$. The proof is an elegant and minimalist combination of zero--one arguments in the presence of amenability. The method may be extended (not without difficulty) to other problems including rigidity and entanglement percolation, as well as to the Gibbs theory of …
