We survey the known results about simple permutations. In particular, we present a number of recent enumerative and structural results pertaining to simple permutations, and show how simple permutations play an important role in the study of permutation classes. We demonstrate how classes containing only finitely many simple permutations satisfy a number of special properties relating to enumeration, partial well-order and the property of being finitely based.
A consecutive pattern in a permutation $π$ is another permutation $σ$ determined by the relative order of a subsequence of contiguous entries of $π$. Traditional notions such as descents, runs and peaks can be viewed as particular examples of consecutive patterns in permutations, but the systematic study of these patterns has flourished in the last 15 years, during which a variety of different techniques have been used. We survey some interesting developments in the subject, focusing on exact and asymptotic enumeration results, the classification of consecutive patterns into equivalence classe…
A family $\mathcal{A}$ of sets is said to be \emph{$t$-intersecting} if any two sets in $\mathcal{A}$ have at least $t$ common elements. A central problem in extremal set theory is to determine the size or structure of a largest $t$-intersecting sub-family of a given family $\mathcal{F}$. We give a survey of known results, conjectures and open problems for various important families $\mathcal{F}$, namely, power sets, levels of power sets, hereditary families, families of signed sets, families of labeled sets, and families of permutations. We also provide some extensions and consequences of kno…
An occurrence of a classical pattern p in a permutation πis a subsequence of πwhose letters are in the same relative order (of size) as those in p. In an occurrence of a generalized pattern, some letters of that subsequence may be required to be adjacent in the permutation. Subsets of permutations characterized by the avoidance--or the prescribed number of occurrences--of generalized patterns exhibit connections to an enormous variety of other combinatorial structures, some of them apparently deep. We give a short overview of the state of the art for generalized patterns.
In this paper we characterize permutation groups that are automorphism groups of coloured graphs and digraphs and are abelian as abstract groups. This is done in terms of basic permutation group properties. Using Schur's classical terminology, what we provide is characterizations of the classes of 2-closed and $2*$-closed abelian permutation groups. This is the first characterization concerning these classes since they were defined.
We establish conditions for a permutation group generated by a single permutation of a prime power order to be an automorphism group of a graph or an edge-colored graph. This corrects and generalizes the results of the two papers on cyclic permutation groups published in 1978 and 1981 by S. P. Mohanty, M. R. Sridharan, and S. K. Shukla.
For an arbitrary finite permutation group $G$, subgroup of the symmetric group $S_\ell$, we determine the permutations involving only members of $G$ as $\ell$-patterns, i.e., avoiding all patterns in the set $S_\ell \setminus G$. The set of all $n$-permutations with this property constitutes again a permutation group. We consequently refine and strengthen the classification of sets of permutations closed under pattern involvement and composition that is due to Atkinson and Beals.
We generalize the results of Ksavrelof and Zeng about the multidistribution of the excedance number of $S_n$ with some natural parameters to the colored permutation group and to the Coxeter group of type $D$. We define two different orders on these groups which induce two different excedance numbers. Surprisingly, in the case of the colored permutation group, we get the same generalized formulas for both orders.
We find a combinatorial formula for the Haar measure of quantum permutation groups. This leads to a dynamic formula for laws of diagonal coefficients, explaining the Poisson/free Poisson convergence result for characters.
This is a brief survey of some open problems on permutation patterns, with an emphasis on subjects not covered in the recent book by Kitaev, \emph{Patterns in Permutations and words}. I first survey recent developments on the enumeration and asymptotics of the pattern 1324, the last pattern of length 4 whose asymptotic growth is unknown, and related issues such as upper bounds for the number of avoiders of any pattern of length $k$ for any given $k$. Other subjects treated are the Möbius function, topological properties and other algebraic aspects of the poset of permutations, ordered by conta…
In the paper Graphical complexity of products of permutation groups, M. Grech, A. Jez, A. Kisielewicz have proved that the direct product of automorphism groups of edge-colored graphs is itself the automorphism groups of an edge-colored graph. In this paper, we study the direct product of two permutation groups such that at least one of them fails to be the automorphism group of an edge-colored graph. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the direct product to be the automorphism group of an edge-colored graph. The same problem is solved for the edge-colored digraphs.
This paper focuses on determining the volumes of permutation polytopes associated to cyclic groups, dihedral groups, groups of automorphisms of tree graphs, and Frobenius groups. We do this through the use of triangulations and the calculation of Ehrhart polynomials. We also present results on the theta body hierarchy of various permutation polytopes.
Generalizing a result in the theory of finite fields we prove that, apart from a couple of exceptions that can be classified, for any elements $a_1,...,a_m$ of the cyclic group of order $m$, there is a permutation $π$ such that $1a_{π(1)}+...+ma_{π(m)}=0$.
The combinatorial theory for the set of parity alternating permutations is expounded. In view of the numbers of ascents and inversions, several enumerative aspects of the set are investigated. In particular, it is shown that signed Eulerian numbers have intimate relationships to the set.
We study the generating polynomial of the flag major index with each one-dimensional character, called signed Mahonian polynomial, over the colored permutation group, the wreath product of a cyclic group with the symmetric group. Using the insertion lemma of Han and Haglund-Loehr-Remmel and a signed extension established by Eu et al., we derive the signed Mahonian polynomial over the quotients of parabolic subgroups of the colored permutation group, for a variety of systems of coset representatives in terms of subsequence restrictions. This generalizes the related work over parabolic quotients…
MacMahon's classic theorem states that the 'length' and 'major index' statistics are equidistributed on the symmetric group S_n. By defining natural analogues or generalizations of those statistics, similar equidistribution results have been obtained for the alternating group A_n by Regev and Roichman, for the hyperoctahedral group B_n by Adin, Brenti and Roichman, and for the group of even-signed permutations D_n by Biagioli. We prove analogues of MacMahon's equidistribution theorem for the group of signed even permutations and for its subgroup of even-signed even permutations.
In this note we present a simplified and slightly generalized version of a lemma the authors published in 1987. The lemma as stated here asserts that if the order of a permutation of $n$ elements is greater than $n^α$ then some non-identity power of the permutation has support size less than $n/α$. The original version made an unnecessary additional assumption on the cycle structure of the permutation; the proof of the present cleaner version follows the original proof verbatim. Application areas include parallel and sequential algorithms for permutation groups, the diameter of Cayley graphs o…
Using evaluation at appropriately chosen points, we propose a Gröbner basis free approach for calculating the secondary invariants of a finite permutation group. This approach allows for exploiting the symmetries to confine the calculations into a smaller quotient space, which gives a tighter control on the algorithmic complexity, especially for large groups. This is confirmed by extensive benchmarks using a Sage implementation.
In this paper, we start by giving the definitions and basic facts about hyperoctahedral number system. There is a natural correspondence between the integers expressed in the latter and the elements of the hyperoctahedral group when we use the inversion statistic on this group to code the signed permutations. We use this correspondence to define a way with which the signed permutations group can be ordered. With this classification scheme, we can find the r-th signed permutation from a given number r and vice versa without consulting the list in lexicographical order of the elements of the sig…
The covering radius of permutation group codes are studied in this paper with $l_{\infty}$-metric. We determine the covering radius of the $(p,q)$-type group, which is a direct product of two cyclic transitive groups. We also deduce the maximum covering radius among all the relabelings of this group under conjugation, that is, permutation groups with the same algebraic structure but with relabelled members. Finally, we give a lower bound of the covering radius of the dihedral group code, which differs from the trivial upper bound by a constant at most one. This improves the result of Karni and…
We consider an experimental design problem for permutations: given a fixed set $X$, and an integer $t$, construct a list $L$ of permutations of $X$ such that every ordered $t$-tuple of distinct elements of $X$ occurs as a consecutive subsequence of exactly one permutation in $L$. In this paper we focus on solutions based on sharply transitive group actions, in effect generalizing Gordon's notion of group sequencing. We give an explicit construction when $|X|$ is prime for the case $t=3$, and analyze a branching algorithm for the general case which produces, for example, a rare design with $t=6…
Recently, Bagno, Garber and Mansour studied a kind of excedance number on the complex reflection groups and computed its multidistribution with the number of fixed points on the set of involutions in these groups. In this note, we consider the similar problems in more general cases and make a correction of one result obtained by them.
In this short note we present a simple combinatorial trick which can be effectively applied to show the non--existence of sharply transitive sets of permutations in certain finite permutation groups.
The problem of describing the invariance groups of unordered relations, called briefly \emph{relation groups}, goes back to classical work by H. Wielandt. In general, the problem turned out to be hard, and so far it has been settled only for a few special classes of permutation groups. The problem have been solved, in particular, for the class of primitive permutation groups, using the classification of finite simple groups and other deep results of permutation group theory. In this paper we show that, if $G$ is a finite simple primitive permutation group other then the alternating group $A_n$…
A permutation group $G\le\operatorname{Sym}(Ω)$ is said to be $2$-closed if no group $H$ such that $G<H\le\operatorname{Sym}(Ω)$ has the same orbits on $Ω\timesΩ$ as $G$. A simple and efficient inductive criterion for the $2$-closedness is established for abelian permutation groups with cyclic transitive constituents.
There is a connection between permutation groups and permutation patterns: for any subgroup $G$ of the symmetric group $S_\ell$ and for any $n \geq \ell$, the set of $n$-permutations involving only members of $G$ as $\ell$-patterns is a subgroup of $S_n$. Making use of the monotone Galois connection induced by the pattern avoidance relation, we characterize the permutation groups that arise via pattern avoidance as automorphism groups of relations of a certain special form. We also investigate a related monotone Galois connection for permutation groups and describe its closed sets and kernels …
We investigate the combinatorics and geometry of permutation polytopes associated to cyclic permutation groups, i.e., the convex hulls of cyclic groups of permutation matrices. We give formulas for their dimension and vertex degree. In the situation that the generator of the group consists of at most two orbits, we can give a complete combinatorial description of the associated permutation polytope. In the case of three orbits the facet structure is already quite complex. For a large class of examples we show that there exist exponentially many facets.
Motivated by a problem from behavioral economics, we study subgroups of permutation groups that have a certain strong symmetry. Given a fixed permutation, consider the set of all permutations with disjoint inversion sets. The group is called non-nudgable, if the cardinality of this set always remains the same when replacing the initial permutation with its inverse. It is called nudgable otherwise. We show that all full permutation groups, standard dihedral groups, half of the alternating groups, and any abelian subgroup are non-nudgable. In the right probabilistic sense, it is thus quite likel…
Let $G$ be a permutation group on a set $Ω$, and $k$ a positive integer. The $k$-closure $G^{(k)}$ of $G$ is the largest subgroup of $\operatorname{Sym}(Ω)$, with the same as $G$ orbits of componentwise action on $Ω^k$. We prove that the $k$-closure of a finite nilpotent permutation group is the direct product of $k$-closures of its Sylow subgroups.
We define new statistics, (c, d)-descents, on the colored permutation groups Z_r \wr S_n and compute the distribution of these statistics on the elements in these groups. We use some combinatorial approaches, recurrences, and generating functions manipulations to obtain our results.
Each group G of nxn permutation matrices has a corresponding permutation polytope, P(G):=conv(G) in R^{nxn}. We relate the structure of P(G) to the transitivity of G. In particular, we show that if G has t nontrivial orbits, then min{2t,floor(n/2)} is a sharp upper bound on the diameter of the graph of P(G); so if G is transitive, the diameter is at most 2. We also show that P(G) achieves its maximal dimension of (n-1)^2 precisely when G is 2-transitive. We then extend results of I. Pak on mixing times for a random walk on P(G). Our work depends on a new result for permutation groups involving…
The minimal degree of a permutation group $G$ is defined as the minimal number of non-fixed points of a non-trivial element of $G$. In this paper we show that if $G$ is a transitive permutation group of degree $n$ having no non-trivial normal $2$-subgroups such that the stabiliser of a point is a $2$-group, then the minimal degree of $G$ is at least $\frac{2}{3}n$. The proof depends on the classification of finite simple groups.
We study the representations of the commutator subgroup of the braid group with n strands in the symmetric group of degree r. Motivated by some experimental results, we conjecture that for n>r, every such representation is trivial.
Let G,H be closed permutation groups on an infinite set X, with H a subgroup of G. It is shown that if G and H are orbit-equivalent, that is, have the same orbits on the collection of finite subsets of X, and G is primitive but not 2-transitive, then G=H.
Let $Γ$ be a finite connected $G$-vertex-transitive graph and let $v$ be a vertex of $Γ$. If the permutation group induced by the action of the vertex-stabiliser $G_v$ on the neighbourhood $Γ(v)$ is permutation isomorphic to $L$, then $(Γ,G)$ is said to be locally-$L$. A permutation group $L$ is graph-restrictive if there exists a constant $c(L)$ such that, for every locally-$L$ pair $(Γ,G)$ and a vertex $v$ of $Γ$, the inequality $|G_v|\leq c(L)$ holds. We show that an intransitive group is graph-restrictive if and only if it is semiregular.
We define an excedance number for the multi-colored permutation group, i.e. the wreath product of Z_{r_1} x ... x Z_{r_k} with S_n, and calculate its multi-distribution with some natural parameters. We also compute the multi-distribution of the parameters exc(pi) and fix(pi) over the sets of involutions in the multi-colored permutation group. Using this, we count the number of involutions in this group having a fixed number of excedances and absolute fixed points.
This paper presents an analysis of primitive permutation groups of degree $3p$, where $p$ is a prime number, analogous to H. Wielandt's treatment of groups of degree $2p$. It is also intended as an example of the systematic use of combinatorial methods as surveyed in \S6 for distilling information about a permutation group from knowledge of the decomposition of its character. The work is organised into three parts. Part I contains the lesser half of the calculation, the determination of the decomposition of the permutation character. Part II contains a survey of the combinatorial methods and, …
Let $G$ be a transitive permutation group of degree $n$. We say that $G$ is $2'$-elusive if $n$ is divisible by an odd prime, but $G$ does not contain a derangement of odd prime order. In this paper we study the structure of quasiprimitive and biquasiprimitive $2'$-elusive permutation groups, extending earlier work of Giudici and Xu on elusive groups. As an application, we use our results to investigate automorphisms of finite arc-transitive graphs of prime valency.
The group of alternating colored permutations is the natural analogue of the classical alternating group, inside the wreath product $\mathbb{Z}_r \wr S_n$. We present a 'Coxeter-like' presentation for this group and compute the length function with respect to that presentation. Then, we present this group as a covering of $\mathbb{Z}_{\frac{r}{2}} \wr S_n$ and use this point of view to give another expression for the length function. We also use this covering to lift several known parameters of $\mathbb{Z}_{\frac{r}{2}} \wr S_n$ to the group of alternating colored permutations.
Given two positive integers n and c, we determine an upper bound, as a function of n and c, for the maximum order of a finite nilpotent transitive group of degree n and nilpotency class at most c.
We present some Markovian approaches to prove universality results for some functions on the symmetric group. Some of those statistics are already studied in [Kammoun, 2018, 2020] but not the general case. We prove, in particular, that the number of occurrences of a vincular patterns satisfies a CLT for conjugation invariant random permutations with few cycles and we improve the results already known for the longest increasing subsequence. The second approach is a suggestion of a generalization to other random permutations and other sets having a similar structure than the symmetric group.
Using the theory of representations of the symmetric group, we propose an algorithm to compute the invariant ring of a permutation group. Our approach have the goal to reduce the amount of linear algebra computations and exploit a thinner combinatorial description of the invariant ring.
Although the conjugacy classes of the general linear group are known, it is not obvious (from the canonic form of matrices) that two permutation matrices are similar if and only if they are conjugate as permutations in the symmetric group, i.e. that conjugacy classes of S_n do not unite under the natural representation. We prove this fact, and give its application to the enumeration of fixed points under a natural action of S_n x S_n. We also consider the permutation representations of S_n which arise from the action of S_n on k-tuples, and classify which of them unite conjugacy classes and wh…
The subdegrees of a transitive permutation group are the orbit lengths of a point stabilizer. For a finite primitive permutation group which is not cyclic of prime order, the largest subdegree shares a non-trivial common factor with each non-trivial subdegree. On the other hand it is possible for non-trivial subdegrees of primitive groups to be coprime, a famous example being the rank 5 action of the small Janko group on 266 points which has subdegrees of lengths 11 and 12. We prove that, for every finite primitive group, the maximal size of a set of pairwise coprime non-trivial subdegrees is …
Let $G$ be a finite permutation group on $Ω$. An ordered sequence of elements of $Ω$, $(ω_1,\dots, ω_t)$, is an irredundant base for $G$ if the pointwise stabilizer $G_{(ω_1,\dots, ω_t)}$ is trivial and no point is fixed by the stabilizer of its predecessors. If all irredundant bases of $G$ have the same size we say that $G$ is an IBIS group. In this paper we show that if a primitive permutation group is IBIS, then it must be almost simple, of affine-type, or of diagonal type. Moreover we prove that a diagonal-type primitive permutation groups is IBIS if and only if it is isomorphic to $PSL(2,…
Let $G$ be a permutation group acting on a set $V$. A partition $π$ of $V$ is distinguishing if the only element of $G$ that fixes each cell of $π$ is the identity. The distinguishing number of $G$ is the minimum number of cells in a distinguishing partition. We prove that if $G$ is a primitive permutation group and $|V|\ge336$, its distinguishing number is two.
We classify finite primitive permutation groups having a suborbit of length 5. As a corollary, we obtain a classification of finite vertex-primitive graphs of valency 5. In the process, we also classify finite almost simple groups that have a maximal subgroup isomorphic to $\mathrm{Alt}(5)$ or $\mathrm{Sym}(5)$.
In this paper, we study intersecting sets in primitive and quasiprimitive permutation groups. Let $G \leqslant \mathrm{Sym}(Ω)$ be a transitive permutation group, and ${S}$ an intersecting set. Previous results show that if $G$ is either 2-transitive or a Frobenius group, then $|{S}|\leqslant|G_ω|$ (for some $ω\in Ω$). Furthermore, for some 2-transitive groups, $|{S}|=|G_ω|$ if and only if ${S}$ is a coset of a stabilizer. In this paper, we prove that these statements are far from the truth for general transitive groups. In particular, we show that in the case of primitive groups, there is eve…
Permutation resemblance measures the distance of a function from being a permutation. Here we show how to determine the permutation resemblance through linear integer programming techniques. We also present an algorithm for constructing feasible solutions to this integer program, and use it to prove an upper bound for permutation resemblance for some special functions. Additionally, we present a generalization of the linear integer program that takes a function on a finite group and determines a permutation with the lowest differential uniformity among those most resembling it.
In this paper we study the parameterized complexity of two well-known permutation group problems which are NP-complete. 1. Given a permutation group G=<S>, subgroup of $S_n$, and a parameter $k$, find a permutation $π$ in G such that $|{i\in [n]\mid π(i)\ne i}|$ is at least $k$. This generalizes the well-known NP-complete problem of finding a fixed-point free permutation in G. (this is the case when $k=n$). We show that this problem with parameter $k$ is fixed parameter tractable. In the process, we give a simple deterministic polynomial-time algorithm for finding a fixed point free element in…
