The covering radius of permutation group codes are studied in this paper with $l_{\infty}$-metric. We determine the covering radius of the $(p,q)$-type group, which is a direct product of two cyclic transitive groups. We also deduce the maximum covering radius among all the relabelings of this group under conjugation, that is, permutation groups with the same algebraic structure but with relabelled members. Finally, we give a lower bound of the covering radius of the dihedral group code, which differs from the trivial upper bound by a constant at most one. This improves the result of Karni and Schwartz in 2018, where the gap between their lower and upper bounds tends to infinity as the code length grows.
The main result of this work is the characterization of the covering relations of the Bruhat order of the maximal parabolic quotients of type B. Our approach is mainly combinatorial and is based in the pattern of the corresponding permutations also called signed $k$-Grassmannians permutations. We obtain that a covering relation can be classified in four different pairs of permutations. This answers a question raised by Ikeda and Matsumura providing a nice combinatorial model for maximal parabolic quotients of type B.
Let S_n be the set of all permutations on [n]:={1,2,....,n}. We denote by kappa_n the smallest cardinality of a subset A of S_{n+1} that "covers" S_n, in the sense that each pi in S_n may be found as an order-isomorphic subsequence of some pi' in A. What are general upper bounds on kappa_n? If we randomly select nu_n elements of S_{n+1}, when does the probability that they cover S_n transition from 0 to 1? Can we provide a fine-magnification analysis that provides the "probability of coverage" when nu_n is around the level given by the phase transition? In this paper we answer these questions …
An $(n,k)$ sequence covering array is a set of permutations of $[n]$ such that each sequence of $k$ distinct elements of $[n]$ is a subsequence of at least one of the permutations. An $(n,k)$ sequence covering array is perfect if there is a positive integer $λ$ such that each sequence of $k$ distinct elements of $[n]$ is a subsequence of precisely $λ$ of the permutations. While relatively close upper and lower bounds for the minimum size of a sequence covering array are known, this is not the case for perfect sequence covering arrays. Here we present new nontrivial bounds for the latter. In pa…
Let $\mathcal{S}_n$ denote the set of permutations of $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$. The function $f(n,s)$ is defined to be the minimum size of a subset $S\subseteq \mathcal{S}_n$ with the property that for any $ρ\in \mathcal{S}_n$ there exists some $σ\in S$ such that the Hamming distance between $ρ$ and $σ$ is at most $n-s$. The value of $f(n,2)$ is the subject of a conjecture by Kézdy and Snevily, which implies several famous conjectures about latin squares. We prove that the odd $n$ case of the Kézdy-Snevily Conjecture implies the whole conjecture. We also show that $f(n,2)>3n/4$ for all $n$, that $s!<…
A notion of $t$-designs in the symmetric group on $n$ letters was introduced by Godsil in 1988. In particular $t$-transitive sets of permutations form a $t$-design. We derive upper bounds on the covering radius of these designs, as a function of $n$ and $t$ and in terms of the largest zeros of Charlier polynomials.
We present a class of permutations for which the number of distinctly ordered subsequences of each permutation approaches an almost optimal value as the length of the permutation grows to infinity.
This is my dissertation. Its research object is a symmetric group of permutations acting on a finite set. The density of permutations with a given cycle structure pattern is explored when the group order tends to infinity. New and sharper asymptotic formulas are obtained. The latter are applied in approximations of the cycle vector distribution of a random permutation. The saddle-point method, Lagrange-Bürmann inversion formula, Laplace transformations, and other techniques of complex analysis are applied.
We study the size (or volume) of balls in the metric space of permutations, $S_n$, under the infinity metric. We focus on the regime of balls with radius $r = ρ\cdot (n\!-\!1)$, $ρ\in [0,1]$, i.e., a radius that is a constant fraction of the maximum possible distance. We provide new lower bounds on the size of such balls. These new lower bounds reduce the asymptotic gap to the known upper bounds to at most $0.029$ bits per symbol. Additionally, they imply an improved ball-packing bound for error-correcting codes, and an improved upper bound on the size of optimal covering codes.
A PSCA$(v, t, λ)$ is a multiset of permutations of the $v$-element alphabet $\{0, \dots, v-1\}$ such that every sequence of $t$ distinct elements of the alphabet appears in the specified order in exactly $λ$ permutations. For $v \geq t$, let $g(v, t)$ be the smallest positive integer $λ$ such that a PSCA$(v, t, λ)$ exists. We present an explicit construction that proves $g(v,t) = O(v^{t(t-2)})$ for fixed $t \geq 4$. The method of construction involves taking a permutation representation of the group of projectivities of a suitable projective space of dimension $t - 2$ and deleting all but a ce…
The group of alternating colored permutations is the natural analogue of the classical alternating group, inside the wreath product $\mathbb{Z}_r \wr S_n$. We present a 'Coxeter-like' presentation for this group and compute the length function with respect to that presentation. Then, we present this group as a covering of $\mathbb{Z}_{\frac{r}{2}} \wr S_n$ and use this point of view to give another expression for the length function. We also use this covering to lift several known parameters of $\mathbb{Z}_{\frac{r}{2}} \wr S_n$ to the group of alternating colored permutations.
An explicit expression is obtained for the generating series for the number of ramified coverings of the sphere by the double torus, with elementary branch points and prescribed ramification type over infinity. Thus we are able to prove a conjecture of Graber and Pandharipande, giving a linear recurrence equation for the number of these coverings with no ramification over infinity. The general form of the series is conjectured for the number of these coverings by a surface of arbitrary genus that is at least two.
In this paper, we introduce a new parameter of a code, referred to as the remoteness, which can be viewed as a dual to the covering radius. Indeed, the remoteness is the minimum radius needed for a single ball to cover all codewords. After giving some general results about the remoteness, we then focus on the remoteness of permutation codes. We first derive upper and lower bounds on the minimum cardinality of a code with a given remoteness. We then study the remoteness of permutation groups. We show that the remoteness of transitive groups can only take two values, and we determine the remoten…
For a word $π$ and integer $i$, we define $L^i(π)$ to be the length of the longest subsequence of the form $i(i+1)\cdots j$, and we let $L(π):=\max_i L^i(π)$. In this paper we estimate the expected values of $L^1(π)$ and $L(π)$ when $π$ is chosen uniformly at random from all words which use each of the first $n$ integers exactly $m$ times. We show that $\mathbb{E}[L^1(π)]\sim m$ if $n$ is sufficiently larger in terms of $m$ as $m$ tends towards infinity, confirming a conjecture of Diaconis, Graham, He, and Spiro. We also show that $\mathbb{E}[L(π)]$ is asymptotic to the inverse gamma function …
Let $A_n\subseteq S_n$ denote the alternating and the symmetric groups on $1,...,n$. MacMahaon's theorem, about the equi-distribution of the length and the major indices in $S_n$, has received far reaching refinements and generalizations, by Foata, Carlitz, Foata-Schutzenberger, Garsia-Gessel and followers. Our main goal is to find analogous statistics and identities for the alternating group $A_{n}$. A new statistic for $S_n$, {\it the delent number}, is introduced. This new statistic is involved with new $S_n$ equi-distribution identities, refining some of the results of Foata-Schutzenberger…
The regular objects in various categories, such as maps, hypermaps or covering spaces, can be identified with the normal subgroups N of a given group Γ, with quotient group isomorphic to Γ/N. It is shown how to enumerate such objects with a given finite automorphism group G, how to represent them all as quotients of a single regular object U(G), and how they are acted on by the outer automorphism group of Γ. Examples constructed include kaleidoscopic maps with trinity symmetry.
A restricted permutation of a locally finite directed graph $G=(V,E)$ is a vertex permutation $π: V\to V$ for which $(v,π(v))\in E$, for any vertex $v\in V$. The set of such permutations, denoted by $Ω(G)$, with a group action induced from a subset of graph isomorphisms form a topological dynamical system. We focus on the particular case presented by Schmidt and Strasser (2016) of restricted $\mathbb{Z}^d$ permutations, in which $Ω(G)$ is a subshift of finite type. We show a correspondence between restricted permutations and perfect matchings (also known as dimer coverings). We use this corres…
We consider the problem of enumerating permutations in the symmetric group on $n$ elements which avoid a given set of consecutive pattern $S$, and in particular computing asymptotics as $n$ tends to infinity. We develop a general method which solves this enumeration problem using the spectral theory of integral operators on $L^{2}([0,1]^{m})$, where the patterns in $S$ has length $m+1$. Kre\uın and Rutman's generalization of the Perron--Frobenius theory of non-negative matrices plays a central role. Our methods give detailed asymptotic expansions and allow for explicit computation of leading t…
Permutation codes under different metrics have been extensively studied due to their potentials in various applications. Generalized Cayley metric is introduced to correct generalized transposition errors, including previously studied metrics such as Kendall's $τ$-metric, Ulam metric and Cayley metric as special cases. Since the generalized Cayley distance between two permutations is not easily computable, Yang et al. introduced a related metric of the same order, named the block permutation metric. Given positive integers $n$ and $d$, let $\mathcal{C}_{B}(n,d)$ denote the maximum size of a pe…
Consider the family of all perfect matchings of the complete graph $K_{2n}$ with $2n$ vertices. Given any collection $\mathcal M$ of perfect matchings of size $s$, there exists a maximum number $f(n,x)$ such that if $s\leq f(n,x)$, then there exists a perfect matching that agrees with each perfect matching in $\mathcal M$ in at most $x-1$ edges. We use probabilistic arguments to give several lower bounds for $f(n,x)$. We also apply the Lovász local lemma to find a function $g(n,x)$ such that if each edge appears at most $g(n, x)$ times then there exists a perfect matching that agrees with each…
We prove the conjecture of Baik, Deift, and Johansson which says that with respect to the Plancherel measure on the set of partitions of $n$, the 1st, 2nd, and so on, rows behave, suitably scaled, like the 1st, 2nd, and so on, eigenvalues of a Gaussian random Hermitian matrix as $n$ goes to infinity. Our proof is based on an interplay between maps on surfaces and ramified coverings of the sphere. We also establish a connection of this problem with intersection theory on the moduli spaces of curves.
The second author had previously obtained explicit generating functions for moments of characteristic polynomials of permutation matrices (n points). In this paper, we generalize many aspects of this situation. We introduce random shifts of the eigenvalues of the permutation matrices, in two different ways: independently or not for each subset of eigenvalues associated to the same cycle. We also consider vastly more general functions than the characteristic polynomial of a permutation matrix, by first finding an equivalent definition in terms of cycle-type of the permutation. We consider other…
Let A_{R,q} denote a family of covering codes, in which the covering radius R and the size q of the underlying Galois field are fixed, while the code length tends to infinity. In this paper, infinite sets of families A_{R,q}, where R is fixed but q ranges over an infinite set of prime powers are considered, and the dependence on q of the asymptotic covering densities of A_{R,q} is investigated. It turns out that for the upper limit of the covering density of A_{R,q}, the best possibility is O(q). The main achievement of the present paper is the construction of asymptotic optimal infinite sets …
The relative fixity of a permutation group is the maximum proportion of the points fixed by a non-trivial element of the group and the relative fixity of a graph is the relative fixity of its automorphism group, viewed as a permutation group on the vertex-set of the graph. We prove in this paper that the relative fixity of connected $2$-arc-transitive graphs of a fixed valence tends to $0$ as the number of vertices grows to infinity. We prove the same result for the class of arc-transitive graphs of a fixed prime valence, and more generally, for any class of arc-transitive locally-$L$ graphs, …
What is the length of the shortest sequence $S$ of reals so that the set of consecutive $n$-words in $S$ form a covering code for permutations on $\{1,2, >..., n\}$ of radius $R$ ? (The distance between two $n$-words is the number of transpositions needed to have the same order type.) The above problem can be viewed as a special case of finding a De Bruijn covering code for a rooted hypergraph. Each edge of a rooted hypergraph contains a special vertex, called the {\it root} of the edge, and each vertex is the root of a unique edge, called its {\it ball}. A De Bruijn covering code is a subset …
An $(n,k)$-perfect sequence covering array with multiplicity $λ$, denoted PSCA$(n,k,λ)$, is a multiset whose elements are permutations of the sequence $(1,2, \dots, n)$ and which collectively contain each ordered length $k$ subsequence exactly $λ$ times. The primary objective is to determine for each pair $(n,k)$ the smallest value of $λ$, denoted $g(n,k)$, for which a PSCA$(n,k,λ)$ exists; and more generally, the complete set of values $λ$ for which a PSCA$(n,k,λ)$ exists. Yuster recently determined the first known value of $g(n,k)$ greater than 1, namely $g(5,3)=2$, and suggested that findin…
We study asymptotics of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group S_n corresponding to a balanced Young diagram λ(a Young diagram with at most C\sqrt{n} rows and columns for some fixed constant C) in the limit as n tends to infinity. We show that there exists a constant D (which depends only on C) with a property that |χ^λ(π)| = | Tr ρ^λ(π)/Tr ρ^λ(e) | < [ D max(1,|π|^2/n) / \sqrt{n}} ]^{|π|}, where |π| denotes the length of a permutation (the minimal number of factors necessary to write πas a product of transpositions). Our main tool is an analogue of Frobenius character formula wh…
In this paper, we consider finite flag-transitive affine planes with a solvable automorphism group. Under a mild number-theoretic condition involving the order and dimension of the plane, the translation complement must contain a linear cyclic subgroup that either is transitive or has two equal-sized orbits on the line at infinity. We develop a new approach to the study of such planes by associating them with planar functions and permutation polynomials in the odd order and even order case respectively. In the odd order case, we characterize the Kantor-Suetake family by using Menichetti's clas…
The covering radius problem is a question in coding theory concerned with finding the minimum radius $r$ such that, given a code that is a subset of an underlying metric space, balls of radius $r$ over its code words cover the entire metric space. Klapper introduced a code parameter, called the multicovering radius, which is a generalization of the covering radius. In this paper, we introduce an analogue of the multicovering radius for permutation codes (cf. Keevash and Ku, 2006) and for codes of perfect matchings (cf. Aw and Ku, 2012). We apply probabilistic tools to give some lower bounds on…
