The aim of this article is to present the category of bounded Frechet manifolds in respect to which we will review the geometry of Frechet manifolds with a stronger accent on its metric aspect. An inverse function theorem in the sense of Nash and Moser in this category is proved, and some applications to Riemannian geometry are given.
In this paper the notion of the intrinsic geometry of an almost contact metric manifold is introduced. Description of some classes of spaces with almost contact metric structures in terms of the intrinsic geometry is given. A new type of almost contact metric spaces, more precisely, Hermitian almost contact metric spaces, is introduced.
Given a parabolic geometry, it is sometimes possible to find special metrics characterised by some invariant conditions. In conformal geometry, for example, one asks for an Einstein metric in the conformal class. Einstein metrics have the special property that their geodesics are distinguished, as unparameterised curves, in the sense of parabolic geometry. This property characterises the Einstein metrics. In this article we initiate a study of corresponding phenomena for other parabolic geometries, in particular for the hypersurface CR and contact Legendrean cases.
The aim of this note is to describe the geometry of $\mathbb{C}^2$ equipped with a Kähler metric defined by Warren. It is shown that with that metric $\mathbb{C}^2$ is a flat manifold. Explicit formulae for geodesics and volume of geodesic ball are also computed. Finally, a family of similar flat metrics is constructed.
A summary introduction of the Weil-Petersson metric space geometry is presented. Teichmueller space and its augmentation are described in terms of Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates. Formulas for the gradients and Hessians of geodesic-length functions are presented. Applications are considered. A description of the Weil-Petersson metric in Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates is presented. The Alexandrov tangent cone at points of the augmentation is described. A comparison dictionary is presented between the geometry of the space of flat tori and Teichmueller space with the Weil-Petersson metric.
For a Riemannian manifold $M$, we determine some curvature properties of a tangent bundle equipped with the rescaled metric. The main aim of this paper is to give explicit formulae for the rescaled metric on $TM$, and investigate the geodesics on the tangent bundle with respect to the rescaled Sasaki metric.
We show that on Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on $\C^2$, the hyperkähler metric construsted by H. Nakajima via hyperkähler reduction is the Quasi-Asymptotically Locally Euclidean (QALE in short) metric constructed by D. Joyce.
The purpose of this paper is to establish a partial regularity theory on certain homogeneous complex Monge-Ampere equations. As consequences of this new theory, we prove the uniqueness of extremal Kaehler metrics and give an necessary condition for existence of extremal Kaehler metrics.
This is a survey article, based on the author's lectures in the 2015 Current developments in Mathematics meeting; published in "Current developments in Mathematics". Version 2, references corrected and added.
The aim of this paper is to develop on the 1-jet space J^1(R,M^4) the jet Generalized Lagrange Geometry for the rheonomic Chernov metric. The associated gravitational and electromagnetic field models based on the rheonomic Finsler Chernov metric tensor are developed and discussed.
Let (M,g) be a complete noncompact riemannian manifold with bounded geometry and parallel Ricci curvature. We show that some operators, "affine" relatively to the Ricci curvature, are locally invertible, in some classical Sobolev spaces, near the metric g.
We consider Hitchin's hyperkähler metric $g_{L^2}$ on the $SU(n)$-Hitchin moduli space moduli space over a compact Riemann surface. We prove that the difference between the metric $g_{L^2}$ and a simpler "semiflat" hyperkähler metric $g_{\mathrm{sf}}$ is exponentially-decaying along generic rays in the Hitchin moduli space, as conjectured by Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke.
The basic class of the non-integrable almost complex manifolds with Norden metric is considered. Its curvature properties are studied. The isotropic Kaehler type of investigated manifolds is introduced and characterized geometrically.
We introduce and study $H$-paracontact metric manifolds, that is, paracontact metric manifolds whose Reeb vector field $ξ$ is harmonic. We prove that they are characterized by the condition that $ξ$ is a Ricci eigenvector. We then investigate how harmonicity of the Reeb vector field $ξ$ of a paracontact metric manifold is related to some other relevant geometric properties, like infinitesimal harmonic transformations and paracontact Ricci solitons.
This paper is a survey of results obtained by the authors on the geometry of connections with totally skew-symmetric torsion on the following manifolds: almost complex manifolds with Norden metric, almost contact manifolds with B-metric and almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and anti-Hermitian metric.
The paper develops the Finsler-like geometry on the 1-jet space for the jet conformal Minkowski (JCM) metric, which naturally extends the Minkowski metric in the Chernov-Pavlov framework. To this aim there are determined the nonlinear connection, distinguished (d-) Cartan linear connection, d-torsions and d-curvatures. The field geometrical gravitational and electromagnetic d-models based on the JCM metric are discussed.
We review a recent series of $G_2$ manifolds constructed via solvable Lie groups obtained in math.DG/0409137. They carry two related distinguished metrics, one negative Einstein and the other in the conformal class of a Ricci-flat metric.
The purpose of this article is to review some recent results on the geometry of neutral signature metrics in dimension four and their twistor spaces. The following topics are considered: Neutral Kähler and hyperkähler surfaces, Walker metrics, Neutral anti-self-dual 4-manifolds and projective structures, Twistor spaces of neutral metrics.
We investigate the geometry of a normal bundle equipped with a $(p,q)$-metric, i.e., Riemannian metric of Cheeger-Gromoll type, to the submanifold of a Riemannian manifold. We derive all natural object as the Levi-Civita connection, curvature tensor, sectional and scalar curvature. We prove that under some natural conditions the sectional curvature of this bundle may be bounded from below by given arbitrary large positive constant. Next we investigate $(p,q)$-metrics from the complex geometry point of view. We show when the normal bundle can by equipped with a structure of almost Hermitian, al…
We construct metrics with the holonomy group SU(2) on the tangent bundles of weighted complex projective lines and give a geometric description of the moduli space of special Kahler metrics on a K3-surface in the neighborhood of the flat orbifold $T^4/Z_3$.
A method to generalize results from Riemannian Geometry to Finsler geometry is presented. We use the method to generalize several results that involve only metric conditions. Between them we show that the topology induced by the Finsler structure is equivalent to the manifold topology, we provide a new proof of the Hopf-Rinow theorem in Finsler geometry and we prove the existence of the center of mass of a convex body when the non-symmetric distance function comes from a non-reversible Finsler function.
In this study, we show that there is an $α$-Sasakian structure on product manifold $M_{1}\times β(I)$ where $M_{1}$ is a Kaehlerian manifold that has exact 1-form and $β(I)$ is an open curve. After then, we define a new type warped product metric to study the warped product of almost Hermitian manifolds with almost contact metric manifolds.
The $B$-connection on almost complex manifolds with Norden metric is an analogue of the first canonical connection of Lihnerovich in Hermitian geometry. In the present paper it is considered a $B$-connection in the class of the quasi-Kähler manifold with Norden metric. Some necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the corresponding curvature tensor to be Kählerian. Curvature properties for this connection are obtained. Conditions are given for the considered manifolds to be isotropic-Kähler.
We prove that the L^2 Riemannian metric on the manifold of all smooth Riemannian metrics on a fixed closed, finite-dimensional manifold induces a metric space structure. As the L^2 metric is a weak Riemannian metric, this fact does not follow from general results. In addition, we prove several results on the exponential mapping and distance function of a weak Riemannian metric on a Hilbert/Frechet manifold. The statements are analogous to, but weaker than, what is known in the case of a Riemannian metric on a finite-dimensional manifold or a strong Riemannian metric on a Hilbert manifold.
A Riemannian metric on a manifold M induces a family of Riemannian metrics on the loop space LM depending on a Sobolev space parameter s. We compute the connection forms of these metrics and the higher symbols of their curvature forms, which take values in pseudodifferential operators. These calculations are used in a followup paper "The Geometry of Loop Spaces II: Characteristic Classes" to construct Chern-Simons classes on the tangent bundle TLM which detect nontrivial elements in the diffeomorphism group of certain Sasakian 5-manifolds associated to Kaehler surfaces.
We study the geometry of the tangent bundle equipped with a two-parameter family of Riemannian metrics. After deriving the expression of the Levi-Civita connection, we compute the Riemann curvature tensor and the sectional, Ricci and scalar curvatures. Specializing to the case of space forms, we characterise the metrics giving positive sectional curvature and show that one can always find parameters ensuring positive scalar curvature on the tangent space. Under some curvature conditions, this extends to general base manifolds.
In this paper we investigate the balanced condition (in the sense of Donaldson) and the existence of an Englis expansion for the LeBrun's metrics on $C^2$. Our first result shows that a LeBrun's metric on $C^2$ is never balanced unless it is the flat metric. The second one shows that an Englis expansion of the Rawnsley's function associated to a LeBrun's metric always exists, while the coefficient $a_3$ of the expansion vanishes if and only if the LeBrun's metric is indeed the flat one.
The problem of characterizing conformally Einstein manifolds by tensorial conditions has been tackled recently in papers by M. Listing, and in work by A. R. Gover and P. Nurowski. Their results apply to metrics satisfying a "non-degeneracy" condition on the Weyl tensor \W. We investigate the geometry of the foliations arising on conformally Einstein spaces (with Riemannian signature) where this condition fails, which then allows us to characterize a general class of locally conformally Einstein Riemannian manifolds with degenerate Weyl tensor.
The purpose of this paper is to establish a completely new partial regularity theory on certain homogeneous complex Monge-Ampere equations. Our partial regularity theory will be obtained by studying foliations by holomorphic curves and and their relations to homogeneous complex Monge-Ampere equations. As applications, we will prove the uniqueness of extremal Kähler metrics and give an necessary condition for existence of extremal Kähler metrics. Further applications will be discussed in our forthcoming papers.
Using the twistor correspondence, we give a classification of toric anti-self-dual Einstein metrics: each such metric is essentially determined by an odd holomorphic function. This explains how the Einstein metrics fit into the classification of general toric anti-self-dual metrics given in an earlier paper (math.DG/0602423). The results complement the work of Calderbank-Pedersen (math.DG/0105263), who describe where the Einstein metrics appear amongst the Joyce spaces, leading to a different classification. Taking the twistor transform of our result gives a new proof of their theorem.
The geometry on a slope of a mountain is the geometry of a Finsler metric, called here the {\it slope metric}. We study the existence of globally defined slope metrics on surfaces of revolution as well as the geodesic's behavior. A comparison between Finslerian and Riemannian areas of a bounded region is also studied.
We introduce a generalization of structured manifolds as the most general Riemannian metric g associated to an affinor (tensor field of (1,1)-type) F and initiate a study of their semi-invariant submanifolds. These submanifolds are generalization of CR-submanifolds of almost complex geometry and semi-invariant submanifolds of several interesting geometries (almost product, almost contact and others). We characterize the integrability of both invariant and anti-invariant distribution; the special case when F is covariant constant with respect to g gives major simplifications in computations.
We prove that the universal covering of a complete locally symmetric normal metric contact pair manifold is a Calabi-Eckmann manifold. Moreover we show that a complete, simply connected, normal metric contact pair manifold such that the foliation induced by the vertical subbundle is regular and reflections in the integral submanifolds of the vertical subbundle are isometries, then the manifold is the product of globally $ϕ$-symmetric spaces and fibers over a locally symmetric space endowed with a symplectic pair.
Several Riemannian metrics and families of Riemannian metrics were defined on the manifold of Symmetric Positive Definite (SPD) matrices. Firstly, we formalize a common general process to define families of metrics: the principle of deformed metrics. We relate the recently introduced family of alpha-Procrustes metrics to the general class of mean kernel metrics by providing a sufficient condition under which elements of the former belongs to the latter. Secondly, we focus on the principle of balanced bilinear forms that we recently introduced. We give a new sufficient condition under which the…
Let $(M,g)$ be a Riemannian manifold, $L(M)$ its frame bundle. We construct new examples of Riemannian metrics on $L(M)$, which are obtained from Riemannian metrics on the tangent bundle $TM$. We compute the Levi--Civita connection and curvatures of these metrics.
In this paper, we introduce the weighted projective Ricci curvature as an extension of projective Ricci curvature introduced by Z. Shen. We characterize the class of Randers metrics of weighted projective Ricci flat curvature. We find the necessary and sufficient condition under which a Kropina metric has weighted projective Ricci flat curvature. Finally, we show that every projectively flat metric with isotropic weighted projective Ricci and isotropic S-curvature is a Kropina metric or Randers metric.
We establish an equivalence between conformally Einstein--Maxwell Kahler 4-manifolds (recently studied in many works) and extremal Kahler 4-manifolds (in the sense of Calabi) with nowhere vanishing scalar curvature. The corresponding pairs of Kahler metrics arise as transversal Kahler structures of Sasaki metrics compatible with the same CR structure and having commuting Sasaki--Reeb vector fields. This correspondence extends to higher dimensions using the notion of a weighted extremal Kahler metric, illuminating and uniting several explicit constructions in Kahler and Sasaki geometry. It also…
In complex Finsler geometry, an open problem is: does there exist a weakly Kähler Finsler metric which is not Kähler? In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to this open problem. More precisely, we construct a family of the weakly Kähler Finsler metrics which are non-Kähler. The examples belong to the unitary invariant complex Randers metrics. Furthermore, a uniformization theorem of the unitary invariant complex Randers metrics with constant holomorphic curvature is proved under the weakly Kähler condition.
Conformally Kähler, Einstein-Maxwell metrics and $f$-extremal metrics are generalization of canonical metrics in Kähler geometry. We introduce uniform K-stability for toric Kähler manifolds, and show that uniform K-stability is necessary condition for the existence of $f$-extremal metrics on toric manifolds. Furthermore, we show that uniform K-stability is equivalent to properness of relative K-energy.
Any constant-scalar-curvature Kaehler (cscK) metric on a complex surface may be viewed as a solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, and this allows one to produce solutions of these equations on any 4-manifold that arises as a compact complex surface with b_1 even. It is shown, however, that not all solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations on such manifolds arise in this way; new examples can be constructed by means of conformally Kaehler geometry.
Let $M$, $N$ be finite-dimensional manifolds with $M$ compact. This paper looks at the Riemnannian geometry on the space $C^\infty(M,N)$ of smooth maps equipped with the $L^2$-Riemannian metric. This metric was used by Ebin and Marsden in the proof of the well-posedness of the incompressible Euler equation and is related to the Wasserstein distance in optimal transport. The paper gives an introduction to the challenges of infinite-dimensional Riemannian geometry and shows how one use general connections to relate the geometry of $N$ and the geometry of $C^\infty(M,N)$.
In this paper, we prove results concerning the large scale geometry of connected, simply connected nonabelian nilpotent Lie groups equipped with left invariant Riemannian metrics. Precisely, we prove that there do not exist quasi-isometric embeddings of such a nilpotent Lie group into either a CAT(0) metric space or an Alexandrov metric space with curvature bounded below. The main technical aspect of this work is the proof of a limited metric differentiability of Lipschitz maps between connected graded nilpotent Lie groups equipped with left invariant Carnot-Caratheodory metrics and complete m…
It is known that on a closed manifold of dimension greater than one, every smooth weak Riemannian metric on the space of smooth positive densities that is invariant under the action of the diffeomorphism group, is of the form $$ G_μ(α,β)=C_1(μ(M)) \int_M \fracαμ\fracβμ\,μ+ C_2(μ(M)) \int_Mα\cdot \int_Mβ$$ for some smooth functions $C_1,C_2$ of the total volume $μ(M)$. Here we determine the geodesics and the curvature of this metric and study geodesic and metric completeness.
We study the Hessian geometry of toric multi-Taub-NUT metrics and their phase change phenomena via the images of their moment maps. This generalizes an earlier paper on toric Gibbons-Hawking metrics.
We construct a family of Calabi-Yau metrics on $\C^3$ with properties analogous to the Taub-NUT metric on $\C^2$, and construct a family of Calabi-Yau 3-fold metric models on the positive and negative vertices of SYZ fibrations with properties analogous to the Ooguri-Vafa metric.
On a manifold with boundary, we deform the metric conformally. This induces a deformation of the Schouten tensor. We fix the metric at the boundary and realize a prescribed value for the product of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tensor in the interior, provided that there exists a subsolution.
We construct the differential geometry of smooth manifolds equipped with an algebraic curvature map acting as an area measure. Area metric geometry provides a spacetime structure suitable for the discussion of gauge theories and strings, and is considerably more general than Lorentzian geometry. Our construction of geometrically relevant objects, such as an area metric compatible connection and derived tensors, makes essential use of a decomposition theorem due to Gilkey, whereby we generate the area metric from a finite collection of metrics. Employing curvature invariants for multi-metric ba…
Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact Kähler manifold of dimension $n$, and $θ$ be a closed smooth real $(1,1)$-form representing a big and nef cohomology class. We introduce a metric $d_p, p\geq 1$, on the finite energy space $\mathcal{E}^p(X,θ)$, making it a complete geodesic metric space.
The proper Euclidean geometry is considered to be metric space and described in terms of only metric and finite metric subspaces (sigma-immanent description). Constructing the geometry, one does not use topology and topological properties. For instance, the straight, passing through points A and B, is defined as a set of such points R that the area S(A,B,R) of the triangle ABR vanishes. The triangle area is expressed via metric by means of the Hero's formula, and the straight appears to be defined only via metric, i.e. without a reference to (topological) concept of curve. (Usually the straigh…
