We determine the distributional behavior for products of free random variables in a general infinitesimal triangular array. In the case of positive variables, the main theorem extends a result proved earlier for arrays with identically distributed rows. The case of unitary variables is considered as well.
We study the multiplicative convolution for c-monotone independence. This convolution unifies the monotone, Boolean and orthogonal multiplicative convolutions. We characterize convolution semigroups for the c-monotone multiplicative convolution on the unit circle. We also prove that an infinitely divisible distribution can always be embedded in a convolution semigroup. We furthermore discuss the (non)-uniqueness of such embeddings including the monotone case. Finally connections to the multiplicative Boolean convolution are discussed.
We show that the monotonic independence introduced by Muraki can also be used to define a multiplicative convolution. We also find a method for the calculation of this convolution based on an appropriate form of the Cauchy transform. We discuss infinite divisibility in the multiplicative monotonic context as well.
This paper investigates homomorphisms à la Bercovici-Pata between additive and multiplicative convolutions. We also consider their matricial versions which are associated with measures on the space of Hermitian matrices and on the unitary group. The previous results combined with a matricial model of Benaych-Georges and Cabanal-Duvillard allows us to define and study the large N limit of a new matricial model on the unitary group for free multiplicative Lévy processes.
Let $\boxplus$, $\boxtimes$ and $\uplus$ be the free additive, free multiplicative, and boolean additive convolutions, respectively. For a probability measure $μ$ on $[0,\infty)$ with finite second moment, we find the scaling limit of $(μ^{\boxtimes N})^{\boxplus N}$ as $N$ goes to infinity. The $\mathcal{R}$--transform of the limit distribution can be represented by the Lambert's $W$ function. We also find similar limit theorem by replacing the free additive convolution with the boolean convolution.
We investigate relations between additive convolution semigroup and max-convolution semigroup through the law of large numbers for the free multiplicative convolution. Based on the relation, we give a formula related with Belinschi-Nica semigroup and max-Belinschi-Nica semigroup. Finally, we give several limit theorems for classical, free and Boolean extreme values.
We give an explicit description, via analytic subordination, of free multiplicative convolution of operator-valued distributions. In particular, the subordination function is obtained from an iteration process. This algorithm is easily numerically implementable. We present two concrete applications of our method: the product of two free operator-valued semicircular elements and the calculation of the distribution of $dcd+d^2cd^2$ for scalar-valued $c$ and $d$, which are free. Comparision between the solution obtained by our methods and simulations of random matrices shows excellent agreement.
In classical probability the law of large numbers for the multiplicative convolution follows directly from the law for the additive convolution. In free probability this is not the case. The free additive law was proved by D. Voiculescu in 1986 for probability measures with bounded support and extended to all probability measures with first moment by J. M. Lindsay and V. Pata in 1997, while the free multiplicative law was proved only recently by G. Tucci in 2010. In this paper we extend Tucci's result to measures with unbounded support while at the same time giving a more elementary proof for …
Belinschi and Nica introduced a composition semigroup on the set of probability measures. Using this semigroup, they introduced a free divisibility indicator, from which one can know whether a probability measure is freely infinitely divisible or not. In this paper we further investigate this indicator, introduce a multiplicative version of it and are able to show many properties. Specifically, on the first half of the paper, we calculate how the indicator changes with respect to free and Boolean powers; we prove that free and Boolean 1/2-stable laws have free divisibility indicators equal to …
Let M denote the space of Borel probability measures on the real line. For every nonnegative t we consider the transformation $\mathbb B_t : M \to M$ defined for any given element in M by taking succesively the the (1+t) power with respect to free additive convolution and then the 1/(1+t) power with respect to Boolean convolution of the given element. We show that the family of maps {\mathbb B_t|t\geq 0} is a semigroup with respect to the operation of composition and that, quite surprisingly, every $\mathbb B_t$ is a homomorphism for the operation of free multiplicative convolution. We prove t…
We study the behavior of the tail of a measure $μ^{\boxtimes t}$, where $\boxtimes t$ is the $t$-fold free multiplicative convolution power for $t\geq 1$. We focus on the case where $μ$ is a probability measure on the positive half-line with a regularly varying tail i.e. of the form $x^{-α} L(x)$, where $L$ is slowly varying. We obtain a phase transition in the behavior of the tail of $μ^{\boxplus t}$ between regimes $α<1$ and $α>1$. Our main tool is a description of the regularly varying tails of $μ$ in terms of the behavior of the corresponding $S$-transform at $0^-$. We also describe the ta…
Using the combinatorics of non-crossing partitions, we construct a conditionally free analogue of the Voiculescu's S-transform. The result is applied to analytical description of conditionally free multiplicative convolution and characterization of infinite divisibility.
We obtain a formula for the density of the free convolution of an arbitrary probability measure on the unit circle of $\mathbb{C}$ with the free multiplicative analogues of the normal distribution on the unit circle. This description relies on a characterization of the image of the unit disc under the subordination function, which also allows us to prove some regularity properties of the measures obtained in this way. As an application, we give a new proof for Biane's classic result on the densities of the free multiplicative analogue of the normal distributions. We obtain analogue results for…
It has been shown by Voiculescu and Biane that the analytic subordination property holds for free additive and multiplicative convolutions. In this paper, we present an operatorial approach to subordination for free multiplicative convolutions. This study is based on the concepts of `freeness with subordination', or `s-free independence', and `orthogonal independence', introduced recently in the context of free additive convolutions. In particular, we introduce and study the associated multiplicative convolutions and construct related operators, called `subordination operators' and `subordinat…
We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the free additive infinite divisibility of some free multiplicative convolutions with the Wigner, the arcsine, the free Poisson and other distributions, including explicit examples.
In this article we study the influence of regularly varying probability measures on additive and multiplicative Boolean convolutions. We introduce the notion of Boolean subexponentiality (for additive Boolean convolution), which extends the notion of classical and free subexponentiality. We show that the distributions with regularly varying tails belong to the class of Boolean subexponential distributions. As an application we also study the behaviour of the Belinschi-Nica map. Breiman's theorem study the classical product convolution between regularly varying measures. We derive an analogous …
We study the freely infinitely divisible distributions that appear as the laws of free subordinators. This is the free analog of classically infinitely divisible distributions supported on [0,\infty), called the free regular measures. We prove that the class of free regular measures is closed under the free multiplicative convolution, t-th boolean power for $0\leq t\leq 1$, t-th free multiplicative power for $t\geq 1$ and weak convergence. In addition, we show that a symmetric distribution is freely infinitely divisible if and only if its square can be represented as the free multiplicative co…
The classical Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem (MET) of Oseledets is generalized here to cocycles taking values in a semi-finite von Neumann algebra. This allows for a continuous Lyapunov distribution.
In this paper, we study the partial bi-free $S$-transform of a pair $(a,b)$ of random variables, and the $S$-transform of the $2\times 2$ matrix-valued random variable $\left(\begin{matrix}a&0\\0&b\end{matrix}\right)$ associated with $(a,b)$ when restricted to upper triangular $2\times 2$ matrices. We first derive an explicit expression of bi-free multiplicative convolution (of probability measures on the bi-unit-sphere $\mathbb{T}^2$ of $\mathbb{C}^2$, or on $\mathbb{R}^2_+$ in $\mathbb{C}^2$) from a subordination equation for bi-free multiplicative convolution. We then show that, when $(a_1,…
We realize the Belinschi-Nica semigroup of homomorphisms as a free multiplicative subordination. This realization allows to define more general semigroups of homomorphisms with respect to free multiplicative convolution. For these semigroups we show that a differential equation holds, generalizing the complex Burgers equation. We give examples of free multiplicative subordination and find a relation to the Markov-Krein transform, Boolean stable laws and monotone stable laws. A similar idea works for additive subordination, and in particular we study the free additive subordination associated t…
We define an extension of the polynomial calculus on a W*-probability space by introducing an abstract algebra which contains polynomials. This extension allows us to define transition operators for additive and multiplicative free convolution. It also permits us to characterize the free Segal-Bargmann transform and the free Hall transform introduced by Biane, in a manner which is closer to classical definitions. Finally, we use this extension of polynomial calculus to prove two asymptotic results on random matrices: the convergence for each fixed time, as N tends to infinity, of the *-distrib…
