In this work sufficient conditions expressed by means of single and vector Lyapunov functions of Uniform Input-to-Output Stability (UIOS) and Uniform Input-to-State Stability (UISS) are given for finite-dimensional systems under feedback control with zero order hold.
We analyze the robustness of the exponential stability of infinite-dimensional sampled-data systems with unbounded control operators. The unbounded perturbations we consider are the so-called Desch-Schappacher perturbations, which arise, e.g., from the boundary perturbations of systems described by partial differential equations. As the main result, we show that the exponential stability of the sampled-data system is preserved under all Desch-Schappacher perturbations sufficiently small in a certain sense.
We consider the problem of global stability of nonlinear sampled-data systems. Sampled-data systems are a form of hybrid model which arises when discrete measurements and updates are used to control continuous-time plants. In this paper, we use a recently introduced Lyapunov approach to derive stability conditions for both the case of fixed sampling period (synchronous) and the case of a time-varying sampling period (asynchronous). This approach requires the existence of a Lyapunov function which decreases over each sampling interval. To enforce this constraint, we use a form of slack variable…
This paper proposes a general framework for constructing feedback controllers that drive complex dynamical systems to "efficient" steady-state (or slowly varying) operating points. Efficiency is encoded using generalized equations which can model a broad spectrum of useful objectives, such as optimality or equilibria (e.g. Nash, Wardrop, etc.) in noncooperative games. The core idea of the proposed approach is to directly implement iterative solution (or equilibrium seeking) algorithms in closed loop with physical systems. Sufficient conditions for closed-loop stability and robustness are deriv…
This work proposes a notion of robust reachability of one set from another set under constant control. This notion is used to construct a control strategy, involving sequential set-to-set reachability, which guarantees robust global stabilization of nonlinear sampled data systems with positive sampling rate. Sufficient conditions for robust reachability of one set from another under constant control are also provided. Finally, the proposed method is illustrated through two examples.
This paper addresses the stability analysis of infinite-dimensional sampled-data systems under unbounded perturbations. We present two classes of unbounded perturbations preserving the exponential stability of sampled-data systems. To this end, we investigate the continuity of strongly continuous semigroups with respect to their generators, considering the uniform operator topology.
For general nonlinear autonomous systems, a Lyapunov characterization for the possibility of semi-global asymptotic stabilizability by means of a time-varying sampled-data feedback is established. We exploit this result in order to derive a Lie algebraic sufficient condition for sampled-data feedback semi-global stabilizability of affine in the control nonlinear systems with non-zero drift terms. The corresponding proposition constitutes an extension of the "Artstein-Sontag" theorem on feedback stabilization.
Suppose that a continuous-time linear infinite-dimensional system with a static state-feedback controller is strongly stable. We address the following question: If we convert the continuous-time controller to a sampled-data controller by applying an idealized sampler and a zero-order hold, will the resulting sampled-data system be strongly stable for all sufficiently small sampling periods? In this paper, we restrict our attention to the situation where the generator of the open-loop system is a Riesz-spectral operator and its point spectrum has a limit point at the origin. We present conditio…
For nonlinear affine in the control systems, a Lie algebraic sufficient condition for sampled-data feedback semi-global stabilization is established. We use this result, in order to derive sufficient conditions for sampled-data feedback stabilization for a couple of three-dimensional systems.
Sampling arises simultaneously with input and output delays in networked control systems. When the delay is left uncompensated, the sampling period is generally required to be sufficiently small, the delay sufficiently short, and, for nonlinear systems, only semiglobal practical stability is generally achieved. For example, global stabilization of strict-feedforward systems under sampled measurements, sampled-data stabilization of the nonholonomic unicycle with arbitrarily sparse sampling, and sampled-data stabilization of LTI systems over networks with long delays, are open problems. In this …
In this work, a sampled-data nonlinear observer is designed using a continuous-time design coupled with an inter-sample output predictor. The proposed sampled-data observer is a hybrid system. It is shown that under certain conditions, the robustness properties of the continuous-time design are inherited by the sampled-data design, as long as the sampling period is not too large. The approach is applied to linear systems and to triangular globally Lipschitz systems.
Sufficient conditions are established for sampled-data feedback global asymptotic stabilization for nonlinear autonomous systems. One of our main results is an extension of the well known Artstein-Sontag theorem on feedback stabilization concerning affine in the control systems. A second aim of the present work is to provide sufficient conditions for sampled-data feedback asymptotic stabilization for two interconnected nonlinear systems. Lie algebraic sufficient conditions are derived for the case of affine in the control interconnected systems without drift terms.
We study a sampled-data implementation of linear controllers that depend on the output and its derivatives. First, we consider an LTI system of relative degree $r\ge 2$ that can be stabilized using $r-1$ output derivatives. Then, we consider PID control of a second order system. In both cases, the Euler approximation is used for the derivatives giving rise to a delayed sampled-data controller. Given a derivative-dependent controller that stabilizes the system, we show how to choose the parameters of the delayed sampled-data controller that preserves the stability under fast enough sampling. Th…
Event-triggered and self-triggered control have been proposed in recent years as promising control strategies to reduce communication resources in Networked Control Systems (NCSs). Based on the notion of set-invariance theory, this note presents new self-triggered control strategies for linear discrete-time systems subject to input and state constraints. The proposed schemes not only achieve communication reduction for NCSs, but also ensure both asymptotic stability of the origin and constraint satisfactions. A numerical simulation example validates the effectiveness of the proposed approaches…

In this paper, we study the simultaneous stability problem of a finite number of locally inter-connected linear subsystems under practical constraints, including asynchronous and aperiodic sampling, time-varying delays, and measurement errors. We establish a new Lyapunov-based stability result for such a decentralized system. This system has a particular simple structure of interconnections, but it captures some key characteristics of a large class of intermediate models derived from the consensus analysis of multi-agent systems. The stability result is applicable to the estimation of the maxi…

We present a new approach for deriving sampled-data observers from continuous-time observers that feature an Input-to-Output Stability property with respect to the output measurement noise and exponential convergence in the noiseless case. The design approach applies to a wide class of systems and yields sampled-data observers that inherit all performance characteristics of the underlying continuous-time observers. The main component of the proposed sampled-data observer is a novel output predictor that encompasses both inter-sample predictors and ZOH-predictors.
The traditional compressed sensing approach is naturally offline, in that it amounts to sparsely sampling and reconstructing a given dataset. Recently, an online algorithm for performing compressed sensing on streaming data was proposed: the scheme uses recursive sampling of the input stream and recursive decompression to accurately estimate stream entries from the acquired noisy measurements. In this paper, we develop a novel Newton-type forward-backward proximal method to recursively solve the regularized Least-Squares problem (LASSO) online. We establish global convergence of our method as …
This paper studies the problem of designing sampled-data observers and observer-based, sampled-data, output feedback stabilizers for systems with both discrete and distributed, state and output time-delays. The obtained results can be applied to time delay systems of strict-feedback structure, transport Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) with nonlocal terms, and feedback interconnections of Ordinary Differential Equations with a transport PDE. The proposed design approach consists in exploiting an existing observer, which features robust exponential convergence of the error when continuous-…
Recently, a framework for controller design of sampled-data nonlinear systems via their approximate discrete-time models has been proposed in the literature. In this paper we develop novel tools that can be used within this framework and that are very useful for tracking problems. In particular, results for stability analysis of parameterized time-varying discrete-time cascaded systems are given. This class of models arises naturally when one uses an approximate discrete-time model to design a stabilizing or tracking controller for a sampled-data plant. While some of our results parallel their…
This paper presents results for the sampled-data boundary feedback control to the Stefan problem. The Stefan problem represents a liquid-solid phase change phenomenon which describes the time evolution of a material's temperature profile and the interface position. First, we consider the sampled-data control for the one-phase Stefan problem by assuming that the solid phase temperature is maintained at the equilibrium melting temperature. We apply Zero-Order-Hold (ZOH) to the nominal continuous-time control law developed in [23] which is designed to drive the liquid-solid interface position to …
The aim of this paper is to provide a novel systematic methodology for the design of sampled-data observers for Linear Kuramoto-Sivashinsky systems (LK-S) with non-local outputs. More precisely, we extend the systematic sampled-data observer design approach which is based on the use of an Inter-Sample output predictor to the class of LK-S systems. By using a small-gain methodology we provide sufficient conditions ensuring the Input-to-Output Stability (IOS) property of the estimation errors in the presence of measurement noise. Our Inter-Sample output predictor contains a tuning term which can…
This paper provides observer-based sampled-data and event-triggered boundary control strategies for a class of reaction-diffusion PDEs with collocated sensing and Robin actuation. Infinite-dimensional backstepping design is used as the underlying control approach. It is shown that the continuous-time output feedback boundary control applied in a sample-and-hold fashion ensures global closed-loop exponential stability, provided that the sampling period is sufficiently small. Further, robustness to perturbations of the sampling schedule is guaranteed. For the event-triggered implementation of th…
In this paper we study the global exponential stability in the $L^{2}$ norm of semilinear $1$-$d$ hyperbolic systems on a bounded domain, when the source term and the nonlinear boundary conditions are Lipschitz. We exhibit two sufficient stability conditions: an internal condition and a boundary condition. This result holds also when the source term is nonlocal. Finally, we show its robustness by extending it to global Input-to State Stability in the $L^{2}$ norm with respect to both interior and boundary disturbances.
This paper presents a deterministic hybrid observer for the attitude dynamics of a rigid body that guarantees global asymptotical stability. Any smooth attitude observer suffers from the inherent topological restriction that it is impossible to achieve global attractivity, and as such, attitude observers have been developed with almost global asymptotic stability. We demonstrate that such attitude observer may yields very slow initial convergence rates, and motivated by this, we propose a hybrid attitude observer that guarantees global asymptotic stability on the special orthogonal group. We i…
Let $f$ be a polynomial function of $n$ variables. In this paper, we study stability of global Hölderian error bound for a nonempty sublevel set $[f \le t]$ under a perturbation of $t$. In this paper, we give: * Criteria for the existence of a global Hölderian error bound of $[f \le t]$; * Formulas for computing explicitly the set $$H(f) := \{ t \in \mathbb{R}: [f \le t]\ \text{has a global Hölderian error bound}\}$$ via some Fedoryuk values of $f$ and definition of threshold for the existence of global Hölderian error bound of $f$; * Definition of all types of stability of global Hölderian er…
This paper is devoted to the stability analysis of an n species Lotka-Volterra system with discrete and distributed delays. Stochastic perturbations to the parameters of the model are allowed. Sufficient conditions for the almost sure global asymptotic stability of the positive equilibrium are derived in terms of LMIs. The efficiency of the proposed method is illustrated by numerical examples.
This paper is concerned with the stability issue in determining absorption and diffusion coefficients in photoacoustic imaging. Assuming that the medium is layered and the acoustic wave speed is known we derive global Hölder stability estimates of the photo-acoustic inversion. These results show that the reconstruction is stable in the region close to the optical illumination source, and deteriorate exponentially far away. Several experimental pointed out that the resolution depth of the photo-acoustic modality is about tens of millimeters. Our stability estimates confirm these observations an…
This paper addresses stochastic stabilization in case where implementation of control policies is digital, i. e., when the dynamical system is treated continuous, whereas the control actions are held constant in predefined time steps. In such a setup, special attention should be paid to the sample-to-sample behavior of the involved Lyapunov function. This paper extends on the stochastic stability results specifically to address for the sample-and-hold mode. We show that if a Markov policy stabilizes the system in a suitable sense, then it also practically stabilizes it in the sample-and-hold s…
Verifying nonlinear stability of a laminar fluid flow against all perturbations is a central challenge in fluid dynamics. Past results rely on monotonic decrease of a perturbation energy or a similar quadratic generalized energy. None show stability for the many flows that seem to be stable despite these energies growing transiently. Here a broadly applicable method to verify global stability of such flows is presented. It uses polynomial optimization computations to construct non-quadratic Lyapunov functions that decrease monotonically. The method is used to verify global stability of 2D plan…
This note presents a self-contained and streamlined exposition of chemical-network results due to Feinberg, Horn, and Jackson. As an application, it shows the global asymptotic stability to equilibria of McKeithan's kinetic proofreading model for T-cell receptor signal transduction.
In this paper, a class of abstract dynamical systems is considered which encompasses a wide range of nonlinear finite- and infinite-dimensional systems. We show that the existence of a non-coercive Lyapunov function without any further requirements on the flow of the forward complete system ensures an integral version of uniform global asymptotic stability. We prove that also the converse statement holds without any further requirements on regularity of the system. Furthermore, we give a characterization of uniform global asymptotic stability in terms of the integral stability properties and a…
