The present work provides a systematic approach for the design of sampled-data observers to a wide class of 1-D, parabolic PDEs with non-local outputs. The studied class of parabolic PDEs allows the presence of globally Lipschitz nonlinear and non-local terms in the PDE. Two different sampled-data observers are presented: one with an inter-sample predictor for the unavailable continuous measurement signal and one without an inter-sample predictor. Explicit conditions on the upper diameter of the (uncertain) sampling schedule for both designs are derived for exponential convergence of the observer error to zero in the absence of measurement noise and modeling errors. Moreover, explicit estimates of the convergence rate can be deduced based on the knowledge of the upper diameter of the sampling schedule. When measurement noise and/or modeling errors are present, Input-to-Output Stability (IOS) estimates of the observer error hold for both designs with respect to noise and modeling errors. The main results are illustrated by two examples which show how the proposed methodology can be extended to other cases (e.g., boundary point measurements).
We present a new approach for deriving sampled-data observers from continuous-time observers that feature an Input-to-Output Stability property with respect to the output measurement noise and exponential convergence in the noiseless case. The design approach applies to a wide class of systems and yields sampled-data observers that inherit all performance characteristics of the underlying continuous-time observers. The main component of the proposed sampled-data observer is a novel output predictor that encompasses both inter-sample predictors and ZOH-predictors.
This paper studies the boundary output feedback stabilization of general 1-D reaction-diffusion PDEs in the presence of a state delay in the reaction term. The control input applies through a Robin boundary condition while the system output is selected as a either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary trace. The control strategy takes the form of a finite-dimensional observer-based controller with feedback and observer gains that are computed in order to dominate the state delayed term. For any arbitrarily given value of the state delay, we show the exponential stability of the resulting closed-loop s…
The aim of this paper is to provide a novel systematic methodology for the design of sampled-data observers for Linear Kuramoto-Sivashinsky systems (LK-S) with non-local outputs. More precisely, we extend the systematic sampled-data observer design approach which is based on the use of an Inter-Sample output predictor to the class of LK-S systems. By using a small-gain methodology we provide sufficient conditions ensuring the Input-to-Output Stability (IOS) property of the estimation errors in the presence of measurement noise. Our Inter-Sample output predictor contains a tuning term which can…

This paper studies the problem of designing sampled-data observers and observer-based, sampled-data, output feedback stabilizers for systems with both discrete and distributed, state and output time-delays. The obtained results can be applied to time delay systems of strict-feedback structure, transport Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) with nonlocal terms, and feedback interconnections of Ordinary Differential Equations with a transport PDE. The proposed design approach consists in exploiting an existing observer, which features robust exponential convergence of the error when continuous-…
This paper provides observer-based sampled-data and event-triggered boundary control strategies for a class of reaction-diffusion PDEs with collocated sensing and Robin actuation. Infinite-dimensional backstepping design is used as the underlying control approach. It is shown that the continuous-time output feedback boundary control applied in a sample-and-hold fashion ensures global closed-loop exponential stability, provided that the sampling period is sufficiently small. Further, robustness to perturbations of the sampling schedule is guaranteed. For the event-triggered implementation of th…
In this work, a sampled-data nonlinear observer is designed using a continuous-time design coupled with an inter-sample output predictor. The proposed sampled-data observer is a hybrid system. It is shown that under certain conditions, the robustness properties of the continuous-time design are inherited by the sampled-data design, as long as the sampling period is not too large. The approach is applied to linear systems and to triangular globally Lipschitz systems.
We study constant input delay compensation by using finite-dimensional observer-based controllers in the case of the 1D heat equation. We consider Neumann actuation with nonlocal measurement and employ modal decomposition with $N+1$ modes in the observer. We introduce a chain of $M$ sub-predictors that leads to a closed-loop ODE system coupled with infinite-dimensional tail. Given an input delay $r$, we present LMI stability conditions for finding $M$ and $N$ and the resulting exponential decay rate and prove that the LMIs are always feasible for any $r$. We also consider a classical observer-…
This paper addresses the boundary output feedback stabilization of general 1-D reaction-diffusion PDEs with delayed boundary measurement. The output takes the form of a either Dirichlet or Neumann trace. The output delay can be arbitrarily large. The control strategy is composed of a finite-dimensional observer that is used to observe a delayed version of the first modes of the PDE and a predictor component which is employed to obtain the control input to be applied at current time. For any given value of the output delay, we assess the stability of the resulting closed-loop system provided th…
This paper investigates the output feedback boundary control of reaction-diffusion equations with either distributed or boundary measurement by means of a finite-dimensional observer. A constructive method dealing with the design of finite-dimensional observers for the feedback stabilization of reaction-diffusion equations was reported in a recent paper in the case where either the control or the observation operator is bounded and also satisfies certain regularity assumptions. In this paper, we go beyond by demonstrating that a finite-dimensional state-feedback combined with a finite-dimensio…
We tackle the boundary control and estimation problems for a class of viscous Hamilton-Jacobi PDEs, considering bilateral actuation and sensing, i.e., at the two boundaries of a 1-D spatial domain. First, we solve the nonlinear trajectory generation problem for this type of PDEs, providing the necessary feedforward actions at both boundaries. Second, in order to guarantee trajectory tracking with an arbitrary decay rate, we construct nonlinear, full-state feedback laws employed at the two boundary ends. Third, a nonlinear observer is constructed, using measurements from both boundaries, which …
This paper develops boundary observer for estimation of congested freeway traffic states based on Aw-Rascle-Zhang (ARZ) partial differential equations (PDE) model. Traffic state estimation refers to acquisition of traffic state information from partially observed traffic data. This problem is relevant for freeway due to its limited accessibility to real-time traffic information. We propose a model-driven approach in which estimation of aggregated traffic states in a freeway segment are obtained simply from boundary measurement of flow and velocity without knowledge of the initial states. The m…
This paper is concerned with the output feedback boundary stabilization of general 1-D reaction diffusion PDEs in the presence of an arbitrarily large input delay. We consider the cases of Dirichlet/Neumann/Robin boundary conditions for the both boundary control and boundary condition. The boundary measurement takes the form of a either Dirichlet or Neumann trace. The adopted control strategy is composed of a finite-dimensional observer estimating the first modes of the PDE coupled with a predictor to compensate the input delay. In this context, we show for any arbitrary value of the input del…
We solve a linear quadratic optimal control problem for sampled-data systems with stochastic delays. The delays are stochastically determined by the last few delays. The proposed optimal controller can be efficiently computed by iteratively solving a Riccati difference equation, provided that a discrete-time Markov jump system equivalent to the sampled-data system is stochastic stabilizable and detectable. Sufficient conditions for these notions are provided in the form of linear matrix inequalities, from which stabilizing controllers and state observers can be constructed.
The present paper addresses the topic of boundary output feedback stabilization of parabolic-type equations, governed by linear differential operators which can be diagonalized by the introduction of adequate weighting functions (by means of the Sturm-Liouville method), and which evolve in bounded spatial domains that are subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d,\ d=1,2,3$. Combining ideas inspired by \cite{lhachemi2022finite} for the boundary output feedback control of 1-D parabolic PDEs and \cite{munteanu2019boundary} for the state feedback control of multi-D parabolic PDEs, we report in this paper an outpu…
This paper is concerned with the leader-following consensus problem for a class of Lipschitz nonlinear multi-agent systems with uncertain dynamics, where each agent only transmits its noisy output, at discrete instants and independently from its neighbors. The proposed consensus protocol is based on a continuous-discrete time observer, which provides a continuous time estimation of the state of the neighbors from their discrete-time output measurements, together with a continuous control law. The stability of the multi-agent system is analyzed with a Lyapunov approach and the exponential pract…
Recently, the problem of boundary stabilization and estimation for unstable linear constant-coefficient reaction-diffusion equation on n-balls (in particular, disks and spheres) has been solved by means of the backstepping method. However, the extension of this result to spatially-varying coefficients is far from trivial. Some early success has been achieved under simplifying conditions, such as radially-varying reaction coefficients under revolution symmetry, on a disk or a sphere. These particular cases notwithstanding, the problem remains open. The main issue is that the equations become si…
Developing robust data assimilation methods for hyperbolic conservation laws is a challenging subject. Those PDEs indeed show no dissipation effects and the input of additional information in the model equations may introduce errors that propagate and create shocks. We propose a new approach based on the kinetic description of the conservation law. A kinetic equation is a first order partial differential equation in which the advection velocity is a free variable. In certain cases, it is possible to prove that the nonlinear conservation law is equivalent to a linear kinetic equation. Hence, da…
Finite-dimensional observer-based controller design for PDEs is a challenging problem. Recently, such controllers were introduced for the 1D heat equation, under the assumption that one of the observation or control operators is bounded. This paper suggests a constructive method for such controllers for 1D parabolic PDEs with both (observation and control) operators being unbounded. We consider the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation (KSE) under either boundary or in-domain point measurement and boundary actuation. We employ a modal decomposition approach via dynamic extension, using eigenfunctions …
This paper is concerned with the cooperative output regulation problem for a network of agents with different dynamics described by parabolic PDEs subject to spatially- and time-varying parameters. Firstly, a networked controller is designed achieving output synchronization for identical finite-dimensional reference models, which deliver the state of the global reference model required for the synchronization to the parabolic agents. The latter can be subject to local disturbances acting in-domain, on all boundaries and on the anti-collocated output to be controlled. The cooperative output reg…
