In this work, a sampled-data nonlinear observer is designed using a continuous-time design coupled with an inter-sample output predictor. The proposed sampled-data observer is a hybrid system. It is shown that under certain conditions, the robustness properties of the continuous-time design are inherited by the sampled-data design, as long as the sampling period is not too large. The approach is applied to linear systems and to triangular globally Lipschitz systems.
We present a new approach for deriving sampled-data observers from continuous-time observers that feature an Input-to-Output Stability property with respect to the output measurement noise and exponential convergence in the noiseless case. The design approach applies to a wide class of systems and yields sampled-data observers that inherit all performance characteristics of the underlying continuous-time observers. The main component of the proposed sampled-data observer is a novel output predictor that encompasses both inter-sample predictors and ZOH-predictors.
The aim of this paper is to provide a novel systematic methodology for the design of sampled-data observers for Linear Kuramoto-Sivashinsky systems (LK-S) with non-local outputs. More precisely, we extend the systematic sampled-data observer design approach which is based on the use of an Inter-Sample output predictor to the class of LK-S systems. By using a small-gain methodology we provide sufficient conditions ensuring the Input-to-Output Stability (IOS) property of the estimation errors in the presence of measurement noise. Our Inter-Sample output predictor contains a tuning term which can…

This paper studies the problem of designing sampled-data observers and observer-based, sampled-data, output feedback stabilizers for systems with both discrete and distributed, state and output time-delays. The obtained results can be applied to time delay systems of strict-feedback structure, transport Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) with nonlocal terms, and feedback interconnections of Ordinary Differential Equations with a transport PDE. The proposed design approach consists in exploiting an existing observer, which features robust exponential convergence of the error when continuous-…
A supervisory observer is a multiple-model architecture, which estimates the parameters and the states of nonlinear systems. It consists of a bank of state observers, where each observer is designed for some nominal parameter values sampled in a known parameter set. A selection criterion is used to select a single observer at each time instant, which provides its state estimate and parameter value. The sampling of the parameter set plays a crucial role in this approach. Existing works require a sufficiently large number of parameter samples, but no explicit lower bound on this number is provid…
A systematic procedure to synthesize interval observers for nonlinear discrete-time systems is proposed. The feedback gains and other matrices are found from the solutions to semidefinite feasibility programs. Two cases are considered: (1) the interval observer is in the same coordinate frame as the given system, and (2) the interval observer uses a coordinate transformation. The conditions where coordinate transformations are necessary are detailed. Numerical examples are provided to showcase the effectiveness of the interval observers and demonstrate their application to sampled-data systems…
This paper presents an anomaly detection method using a hybrid observer -- which consists of a discrete state observer and a continuous state observer. We focus our attention on anomalies caused by intelligent attacks, which may bypass existing anomaly detection methods because neither the event sequence nor the observed residuals appear to be anomalous. Based on the relation between the continuous and discrete variables, we define three conflict types and give the conditions under which the detection of the anomalies is guaranteed. We call this method conflict-driven anomaly detection. The ef…
A continuous solution is proposed to the problem of uniform global exponential estimation of the angular velocity for rigid bodies by means of direct attitude measurements. The proposed observer is designed on $\mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{R}^3$, and not on the inherent geometry $\mathtt{SO}(3)\times\mathbb{R}^3$, which allows for a simple structure of the observer, being a copy of the system plus some correction terms, and a straightforward classical Lyapunov stability proof. The performances of the observer are illustrated by means of a simple simulation scenario.
We study the formation control problem for a group of mobile agents in a plane, in which each agent is modeled as a kinematic point and can only use the local measurements in its local frame. The agents are required to maintain a geometric pattern while keeping a desired distance to a static/moving target. The prescribed formation is a general one which can be any geometric pattern, and the neighboring relationship of the N-agent system only has the requirement of containing a directed spanning tree. To solve the formation control problem, a distributed controller is proposed based on the idea…
We solve a linear quadratic optimal control problem for sampled-data systems with stochastic delays. The delays are stochastically determined by the last few delays. The proposed optimal controller can be efficiently computed by iteratively solving a Riccati difference equation, provided that a discrete-time Markov jump system equivalent to the sampled-data system is stochastic stabilizable and detectable. Sufficient conditions for these notions are provided in the form of linear matrix inequalities, from which stabilizing controllers and state observers can be constructed.
In this paper, we consider the problem of designing an asymptotic observer for a nonlin-ear dynamical system in discrete-time following Luenberger's original idea. This approach is a two-step design procedure. In a first step, the problem is to estimate a function of the state. The state estimation is obtained by inverting this mapping. Similarly to the continuous-time context, we show that the first step is always possible provided a linear and stable discrete-time system fed by the output is introduced. Based on a weak observ-ability assumption, it is shown that picking the dimension of the …
This paper provides observer-based sampled-data and event-triggered boundary control strategies for a class of reaction-diffusion PDEs with collocated sensing and Robin actuation. Infinite-dimensional backstepping design is used as the underlying control approach. It is shown that the continuous-time output feedback boundary control applied in a sample-and-hold fashion ensures global closed-loop exponential stability, provided that the sampling period is sufficiently small. Further, robustness to perturbations of the sampling schedule is guaranteed. For the event-triggered implementation of th…
We derive an exact deterministic nonlinear observer to compute the continuous state of an inertial navigation system based on partial discrete measurements, the so-called strapdown problem. Nonlinear contraction is used as the main analysis tool, and the hierarchical structure of the system physics is sytematically exploited. The paper also discusses the use of nonlinear measurements, such as distances to time-varying reference points.
In this paper, we study the cooperative output regulation problem for the discrete linear time-delay multi-agent systems by distributed observer approach. In contrast with the same problem for continuous-time linear time-delay multi-agent systems, the problem has two new features. First, in the presence of time-delay, the regulator equations for discrete-time linear systems are different from those for continuous-time linear systems. Second, under the standard assumption on the connectivity of the communication graph, a distributed observer for any continuous-time linear leader system always e…
We propose globally exponentially convergent continuous observers for invariant kinematic systems on finite-dimensional matrix Lie groups. Such an observer estimates, from measurements of landmarks, vectors and biased velocity, both the system state and the unknown constant bias in velocity measurement, where the state belongs to the state-space Lie group and the velocity to the Lie algebra of the Lie group. The main technique is to embed a given system defined on a matrix Lie group into Euclidean space and build observers in the Euclidean space. The theory is illustrated with the special Eucl…
Sampling arises simultaneously with input and output delays in networked control systems. When the delay is left uncompensated, the sampling period is generally required to be sufficiently small, the delay sufficiently short, and, for nonlinear systems, only semiglobal practical stability is generally achieved. For example, global stabilization of strict-feedforward systems under sampled measurements, sampled-data stabilization of the nonholonomic unicycle with arbitrarily sparse sampling, and sampled-data stabilization of LTI systems over networks with long delays, are open problems. In this …
The aim of this work is to design an explicit finite dimensional boundary feedback controller of sampled-data form for locally exponentially stabilizing the equilibrium solutions to semilinear parabolic equations. The feedback controller is expressed in terms of the eigenfunctions corresponding to unstable eigenvalues of the linearized equation. This stabilizing procedure is applicable for any sampling rate, not necessary to be small enough, and it tends to the continuous-times version when the sampling period tends to zero.
The issue of state estimation is considered for an SIR-SI epidemiological model describing a vector-borne disease such as dengue fever, subject to seasonal variations. Assuming continuous measurement of the incidence rate (that is the number of new infectives in the host population per unit time), a class of interval observers with estimate-dependent gain is constructed, and asymptotic error bounds are provided. The synthesis method is based on the search for a common linear Lyapunov function for monotone systems that represent the evolution of the estimation errors.
We consider a general linear control system and a general quadratic cost, where the state evolves continuously in time and the control is sampled, i.e., is piecewise constant over a subdivision of the time interval. This is the framework of a linear-quadratic optimal sampled-data control problem. As a first result, we prove that, as the sampling periods tend to zero, the optimal sampled-data controls converge pointwise to the optimal permanent control. Then, we extend the classical Riccati theory to the sampled-data control framework, by developing two different approaches: the first one uses …
This note investigates the distributed estimation problem for continuous-time linear time-invariant (LTI) systems observed by a network of observers. Each observer in the network has access to only part of the output of the observed system, and communicates with its neighbors according to a given network graph. In this note we recover the known result that if the observed system is observable and the network graph is a strongly connected digraph, then a distributed observer exists. Moreover, the estimation error can be made to converge to zero at any a priori given decay rate. Our approach lea…
We discuss a design approach for nonlinear discrete-time adaptive observer. This involves transforming a nonlinear system into a quasi-LPV (Linear Parameter Varying) polytopic model in Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) form using nonlinear embedding and sector nonlinearity (SNL) transformation. We then develop a discrete-time counterpart for a joint state and parameter estimation, based on design strategies developed for continuous time models in the existing literature. The design uses a Lyapunov approach and provides an error bounded by $\mathbb{L}_2$ gain. Based on this strategy, we propose a design for …
We revisit and extend the Riccati theory, unifying continuous-time linear-quadratic optimal permanent and sampled-data control problems, in finite and infinite time horizons. In a nutshell, we prove that:-- when the time horizon T tends to $+\infty$, one passes from the Sampled-Data Difference Riccati Equation (SD-DRE) to the Sampled-Data Algebraic Riccati Equation (SD-ARE), and from the Permanent Differential Riccati Equation (P-DRE) to the Permanent Algebraic Riccati Equation (P-ARE);-- when the maximal step of the time partition $Δ$ tends to $0$, one passes from (SD-DRE) to (P-DRE), and fro…
Robust global stabilization of nonlinear systems by observer-based feedback controllers is a challenging task. This article investigates the problem of designing observer-based stabilizing controllers for incrementally quadratic nonlinear systems with external disturbances. The nonlinearities considered in the system model satisfy the incremental quadratic constraints, which are characterized by incremental multiplier matrices and encompass many common nonlinearities. The simultaneous search for the observer and the controller gain matrices is formulated as a feasibility problem of linear matr…
This paper is concerned with the leader-following consensus problem for a class of Lipschitz nonlinear multi-agent systems with uncertain dynamics, where each agent only transmits its noisy output, at discrete instants and independently from its neighbors. The proposed consensus protocol is based on a continuous-discrete time observer, which provides a continuous time estimation of the state of the neighbors from their discrete-time output measurements, together with a continuous control law. The stability of the multi-agent system is analyzed with a Lyapunov approach and the exponential pract…
This article considers a model formulation and an adaptive observer design for the simultaneous estimation of the state of charge and crossover flux in disproportionation redox flow batteries. This novel nonaqueous battery chemistry allows a simple isothermal lumped parameter model to be formulated. The transport of vanadium through the porous separator is a key unknown function of battery variables and it is approximated in the space of continuous functions. The state and parameter observer adaptation laws are derived using Lyapunov analysis applied to the estimation error, the stability and …

We present a hybrid scheme for the parameter and state estimation of nonlinear continuous-time systems, which is inspired by the supervisory setup used for control. State observers are synthesized for some nominal parameter values and a criterion is designed to select one of these observers at any given time instant, which provides state and parameter estimates. Assuming that a persistency of excitation condition holds, the convergence of the parameter and state estimation errors to zero is ensured up to a margin, which can be made as small as desired by increasing the number of observers. To …
Suppose that a continuous-time linear infinite-dimensional system with a static state-feedback controller is strongly stable. We address the following question: If we convert the continuous-time controller to a sampled-data controller by applying an idealized sampler and a zero-order hold, will the resulting sampled-data system be strongly stable for all sufficiently small sampling periods? In this paper, we restrict our attention to the situation where the generator of the open-loop system is a Riesz-spectral operator and its point spectrum has a limit point at the origin. We present conditio…
This paper addresses the stability analysis of infinite-dimensional sampled-data systems under unbounded perturbations. We present two classes of unbounded perturbations preserving the exponential stability of sampled-data systems. To this end, we investigate the continuity of strongly continuous semigroups with respect to their generators, considering the uniform operator topology.
This work provides a framework for data-driven control of discrete time systems with unknown input-output dynamics and outputs controllable by the inputs. This framework leads to stable and robust real-time control of the system such that a feasible output trajectory can be tracked. This is made possible by rapid real-time stable learning of the unknown dynamics using Hölder-continuous learning schemes that are designed as discrete-time stable disturbance observers. This observer learns from prior input-output history and it ensures finite-time stable convergence of model estimation errors to …

This paper considers the problem of attitude, position and linear velocity estimation for rigid body systems relying on landmark measurements. We propose two hybrid nonlinear observers on the matrix Lie group $SE_2(3)$, leading to global exponential stability. The first observer relies on fixed gains, while the second one uses variable gains depending on the solution of a continuous Riccati equation (CRE). These observers are then extended to handle biased angular velocity measurements. Both simulation and experimental results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed observe…

This paper builds on recent work on Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) in the non-linear observer community, by framing the visual localisation and mapping problem as a continuous-time equivariant observer design problem on the symmetry group of a kinematic system. The state-space is a quotient of the robot pose expressed on SE(3) and multiple copies of real projective space, used to represent both points in space and bearings in a single unified framework. An observer with decoupled Riccati-gains for each landmark is derived and we show that its error system is almost globally asymp…

This paper investigates the problem of continuous attitude estimation on $SO(3)$ using continuous angular velocity and linear acceleration measurements as well as intermittent linear velocity and inertial vector measurements. First, we propose a nonlinear observer for the case where all the measurements are continuous and almost global asymptotic stability (AGAS) is shown using the notion of almost global input-to-state stability (ISS) on manifolds. Thereafter, a hybrid attitude observer, with AGAS guarantees, is proposed in terms of intermittent linear velocity and vector measurements. Numeri…
This paper considers the general problem of transitioning theoretically safe controllers to hardware. Concretely, we explore the application of control barrier functions (CBFs) to sampled-data systems: systems that evolve continuously but whose control actions are computed in discrete time-steps. While this model formulation is less commonly used than its continuous counterpart, it more accurately models the reality of most control systems in practice, making the safety guarantees more impactful. In this context, we prove robust set invariance with respect to zero-order hold controllers as wel…
