The paper deals with joint state and parameter estimation for nonlinear continuous-time systems. Based on a guaranteed LPV approximation, the set adaptive observers design problem is solved avoiding the exponential complexity obstruction usually met in the set-membership parameter estimation. Potential application to fault diagnosis is considered. The efficacy of the proposed set adaptive observers is demonstrated on several examples.
The spacecraft attitude tracking problem is addressed with actuator faults and uncertainties among inertias, external disturbances, and, in particular, state estimates. A continuous sliding mode attitude controller is designed using attitude and angular velocity estimates from an arbitrary stable stand-alone observer. Rigorous analysis shows that the controller ensures robust stability of the entire closed-loop system as long as the observer yields state estimates with uniformly ultimately bounded estimation errors. In addition, a sequential Lyapunov analysis is utilized to obtain a convergent…
This paper employs a supervised machine learning (ML) algorithm to propose an integrated fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) and fault-tolerant control (FTC) strategy to detect, diagnose, and classify the grid faults and correct the input voltage before affecting the grid-connected distributed energy resources (DER) inverters. This controller can mitigate the impact of grid faults on inverters by predicting and modifying the time series of their input voltage. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed controller and evaluate its operating performance.
Quantum computing (QC) and deep learning techniques have attracted widespread attention in the recent years. This paper proposes QC-based deep learning methods for fault diagnosis that exploit their unique capabilities to overcome the computational challenges faced by conventional data-driven approaches performed on classical computers. Deep belief networks are integrated into the proposed fault diagnosis model and are used to extract features at different levels for normal and faulty process operations. The QC-based fault diagnosis model uses a quantum computing assisted generative training p…

Power electronics converters have been widely used in aerospace system, DC transmission, distributed energy, smart grid and so forth, and the reliability of power electronics converters has been a hotspot in academia and industry. It is of great significance to carry out power electronics converters open-circuit faults monitoring and intelligent fault diagnosis to avoid secondary faults, reduce time and cost of operation and maintenance, and improve the reliability of power electronics system. Firstly, the faults features of power electronic converters are analyzed and summarized. Secondly, so…
Fault diagnosis is the problem of determining a set of faulty system components that explain discrepancies between observed and expected behavior. Due to the intrinsic relation between observations and sensors placed on a system, sensors' fault diagnosis and placement are mutually dependent. Consequently, it is imperative to solve the fault diagnosis and sensor placement problems jointly. One approach to modeling systems for fault diagnosis uses answer set programming (ASP). We present a model-based approach to sensor placement for active diagnosis using ASP, where the secondary objective is t…
This work deals with the problem of designing observers for the estimation of a single function of the states for discrete-time nonlinear systems. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of lower order functional observers with linear dynamics and linear output map are derived. The results provide a direct generalization to Luenberger's linear theory of functional observers. The design methodology is tested on a non-isothermal CSTR case study.
Inspired by recent progress in machine learning, a data-driven fault diagnosis and isolation (FDI) scheme is explicitly developed for failure in the fuel supply system and sensor measurements of the laboratory gas turbine system. A passive approach of fault diagnosis is implemented where a model is trained using machine learning classifiers to detect a given set of fault scenarios in real-time on which it is trained. Towards the end, a comparative study is presented for well-known classification techniques, namely Support vector classifier, linear discriminant analysis, K-neighbor, and decisio…
Convolutional neural network (CNN) models have been widely used for fault diagnosis of complex systems. However, traditional CNN models rely on small kernel filters to obtain local features from images. Thus, an excessively deep CNN is required to capture global features, which are critical for fault diagnosis of dynamical systems. In this work, we present an improved CNN that embeds global features (GF-CNN). Our method uses a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) for dimension reduction to directly extract global features and integrate them into the CNN. The advantage of this method is that both local…
This paper is concerned with the fault diagnosis problem for general linear heterodirectional hyperbolic ODE-PDE systems. A systematic solution is presented for additive time-varying actuator, process and sensor faults in the presence of disturbances. The faults and disturbances are represented by the solutions of finite-dimensional signal models, which allow to take a large class of signals into account. For disturbances, that are only bounded, a threshold for secured fault diagnosis is derived. By applying integral transformations to the system an algebraic fault detection equation to detect…
In this paper, a novel hybrid-degree dual estimation approach based on cubature rules and cubature-based nonlinear filters is proposed for fault diagnosis of nonlinear systems through simultaneous state and time-varying parameter estimation. Our proposed dual nonlinear filtering scheme is developed based on case-dependent cubature rules that are motivated by the following observations and facts, namely (i) dynamic characteristics of nonlinear system states and parameters generally are distinct and posses different degrees of complexities, and (ii) performance of cubature rules depend on the sy…

Graph neural network (GNN)-based fault diagnosis (FD) has received increasing attention in recent years, due to the fact that data coming from several application domains can be advantageously represented as graphs. Indeed, this particular representation form has led to superior performance compared to traditional FD approaches. In this review, an easy introduction to GNN, potential applications to the field of fault diagnosis, and future perspectives are given. First, the paper reviews neural network-based FD methods by focusing on their data representations, namely, time-series, images, and …
Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs) operate in the harsh marine environment with limited accessibility and maintainability. Not only failures are more likely to occur than in land-based turbines, but also corrective maintenance is more expensive. In the present study, a mixed model and signal-based Fault Diagnosis (FD) architecture is developed to detect and isolate critical faults in FOWTs. More specifically, a model-based scheme is developed to detect and isolate the faults associated with the turbine system. It is based on a fault detection and approximation estimator and fault isolatio…

In practical chiller systems, applying efficient fault diagnosis techniques can significantly reduce energy consumption and improve energy efficiency of buildings. The success of the existing methods for fault diagnosis of chillers relies on the condition that sufficient labeled data are available for training. However, label acquisition is laborious and costly in practice. Usually, the number of labeled data is limited and most data available are unlabeled. The existing methods cannot exploit the information contained in unlabeled data, which significantly limits the improvement of fault diag…
