In this paper, we consider the problem of designing an asymptotic observer for a nonlin-ear dynamical system in discrete-time following Luenberger's original idea. This approach is a two-step design procedure. In a first step, the problem is to estimate a function of the state. The state estimation is obtained by inverting this mapping. Similarly to the continuous-time context, we show that the first step is always possible provided a linear and stable discrete-time system fed by the output is introduced. Based on a weak observ-ability assumption, it is shown that picking the dimension of the stable auxiliary system sufficiently large, the estimated function of the state is invertible. This approach is illustrated on linear systems with polynomial output. The link with the Luenberger observer obtained in the continuous-time case is also investigated.
This paper presents a novel Luenberger-style observer for robot manipulators with position measurements. Under the assumption that the state evolutions that are to be observed have bounded velocities, it is shown that the origin of the observation error dynamics is globally exponentially stable and that the corresponding convergence rate can be made arbitrarily high by increasing a gain of the observer. Comparisons and relations between the proposed observer and existing observers are discussed. The effectiveness of the result here presented is illustrated by a simulation of the observer for t…
We state sufficient conditions for the existence, on a given open set, of the extension, to nonlinear systems, of the Luenberger observer as it has been proposed by Kazantzis and Kravaris. We prove it is sufficient to choose the dimension of the system, giving the observer, less than or equal to 2 + twice the dimension of the state to be observed. We show that it is sufficient to know only an approximation of the solution of a PDE, needed for the implementation. We establish a link with high gain observers. Finally we extend our results to systems satisfying an unboundedness observability prop…
In this paper, we propose observers for the dynamics of anthracnose disease described in [12]. Spatial and non spatial versions of the observers are given following an approach similar to [12]. The models given in [12] are improved in order to be more realistic. The conditions on parameters are more general. There are also changes in the equations modelling the dynamics of the berry volume (v) and the rot volume (v_r). We study theoretically the proposed observers in terms of well-posedness and convergence. We make several simulations to assess the effectiveness of observers which definitely d…
This paper deals with the observer design problem for time-varying linear infinite-dimensional systems. We address both the problem of online estimation of the state of the system from the output via an asymptotic observer, and the problem of offline estimation of the initial state via a Back and Forth Nudging (BFN) algorithm. In both contexts, we show under a weak detectability assumption that a Luenberger-like observer may reconstruct the so-called observable subspace of the system. However, since no exact observability hypothesis is required, only a weak convergence of the observer holds in…
Observer design typically requires the observability of the underlying system, which may be hard to verify for nonlinear systems, while guaranteeing asymptotic convergence of errors, which may be insufficient in order to satisfy performance conditions in finite time. This paper develops a method to design Luenberger-type observers for nonlinear systems which guarantee the largest possible domain of attraction for the state estimation error regardless of the initialization of the system. The observer design procedure is posed as a two step problem. In the the first step, the error dynamics are …
Developing robust data assimilation methods for hyperbolic conservation laws is a challenging subject. Those PDEs indeed show no dissipation effects and the input of additional information in the model equations may introduce errors that propagate and create shocks. We propose a new approach based on the kinetic description of the conservation law. A kinetic equation is a first order partial differential equation in which the advection velocity is a free variable. In certain cases, it is possible to prove that the nonlinear conservation law is equivalent to a linear kinetic equation. Hence, da…
This paper introduces a new nonlinear observer for state estimation of linear time invariant systems. The proposed observer contains a (nonlinear) cubic term in its error dynamics. The present paper addresses the problem of existence of an (output) feedback law to the purposes of asymptotically steering to zero a given controlled variable, while keeping all state variables bounded, for any initial conditions in a given compact set. The problem can be viewed as an extension of the classical problem of semi-globally stabilizing the trajectories of a controlled system to a compact set. The problem also encompasses a version of the classical problem of output regulation. Assuming only the existence of a feedback law that keeps the trajectories of the zero dynamics of the con…
This paper presents results on the solvability of the observer design problem for general nonlinear triangular systems with inputs, under weak observability assumptions. The local state estimation is exhibited by means of a delayed time-varying Luenberger-type system. In order to achieve the global estimation, a switching sequence of observers is designed.
We study state estimation for nonlinear differential-algebraic systems, where the nonlinearity satisfies a Lipschitz condition or a generalized monotonicity condition or a combination of these. The presented observer design unifies earlier approaches and extends the standard Luenberger type observer design. The design parameters of the observer can be obtained from the solution of a linear matrix inequality restricted to a subspace determined by the Wong sequences. Some illustrative examples and a comparative discussion are given.
We study global finite-dimensional observer-based stabilization of a semilinear 1D heat equation with globally Lipschitz semilinearity in the state variable. We consider Neumann actuation and point measurement. Using dynamic extension and modal decomposition we derive nonlinear ODEs for the modes of the state. We propose a controller that is based on a nonlinear finite-dimensional Luenberger observer. Our Lypunov $H^1$-stability analysis leads to LMIs, which are shown to be feasible for a large enough observer dimension and small enough Lipschitz constant. Next, we consider the case of a const…
This paper is devoted to the problem of time parallelization of assimilation methods applying on unbounded time domain. In this way, we present a general procedure to couple the Luenberger observer with time parallelization algorithm. Our approach is based on a posteriori error estimates of the latter and preserves the rate of the non-parallelized observer. We then focus on the case where the Parareal algorithm is used as time parallelization algorithm, and derive a bound of the efficiency of our procedure. A variant devoted to the case a large number of processors is also proposed. We illustr…
An exponential Luenberger dynamical observer is proposed to estimate the state of a general class of nonautonomous semilinear parabolic equations. The result can be applied to the case where the output is given by state measurements taken at a finite number of spatial points, that is, to the case where our sensors are a finite number of delta distributions. The output injection operator is explicit and the derivation of the main result involves the decomposition of the state space into a direct sum of two oblique components depending on the set of sensors. Simulations are presented as an appli…
Although an appropriate choice of measured state variables may ensure observability, designing state observers for the state estimation of epidemic models remains a challenging task. Epidemic spread is a nonlinear process, often modeled as the law of mass action, which is of a quadratic form; thus, on a compact domain, its Lipschitz constant turns out to be local and relatively large, which renders the Lipschitz-based design criteria of existing observer architectures infeasible. In this paper, a novel observer architecture is proposed for the state estimation of a class of nonlinear systems t…
In this paper, we first present an adaptive distributed observer for a discrete-time leader system. This adaptive distributed observer will provide, to each follower, not only the estimation of the leader's signal, but also the estimation of the leader's system matrix. Then, based on the estimation of the matrix S, we devise a discrete adaptive algorithm to calculate the solution to the regulator equations associated with each follower, and obtain an estimated feedforward control gain. Finally, we solve the cooperative output regulation problem for discrete-time linear multi-agent systems by b…
We derive an exact deterministic nonlinear observer to compute the continuous state of an inertial navigation system based on partial discrete measurements, the so-called strapdown problem. Nonlinear contraction is used as the main analysis tool, and the hierarchical structure of the system physics is sytematically exploited. The paper also discusses the use of nonlinear measurements, such as distances to time-varying reference points.
We discuss a design approach for nonlinear discrete-time adaptive observer. This involves transforming a nonlinear system into a quasi-LPV (Linear Parameter Varying) polytopic model in Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) form using nonlinear embedding and sector nonlinearity (SNL) transformation. We then develop a discrete-time counterpart for a joint state and parameter estimation, based on design strategies developed for continuous time models in the existing literature. The design uses a Lyapunov approach and provides an error bounded by $\mathbb{L}_2$ gain. Based on this strategy, we propose a design for …
This paper considers the design of robust state observers for a class of slope-restricted nonlinear descriptor systems with unknown time-varying parameters belonging to a known set. The proposed design accounts for process disturbances and measurement noise, while allowing for a trade-off between transient performance and sensitivity to noise and parameter mismatch. We exploit a polytopic structure of the system to derive linear-matrix-inequality-based synthesis conditions for robust parameter-dependent observers for the entire parameter set. In addition, we present (alternative) necessary and…
This paper deals with the problem of predicting the future state of discrete-time input-delayed systems in the presence of unknown disturbances that can affect both the state and the output equations of the plant. Since the disturbance is unknown, computing an exact prediction of the future plant states is not possible. To circumvent this problem, we propose using a high-order extended Luenberger-type observer for the plant states, disturbances, and their finite difference variables, combined with a new equation for computing the prediction based on Newton's series from the calculus of finite …
This paper presents two schemes to jointly estimate parameters and states of discrete-time nonlinear systems in the presence of bounded disturbances and noise and where the parameters belong to a known compact set. The schemes are based on sampling the parameter space and designing a state observer for each sample. A supervisor selects one of these observers at each time instant to produce the parameter and state estimates. In the first scheme, the parameter and state estimates are guaranteed to converge within a certain margin of their true values in finite time, assuming that a sufficiently …
In this paper, we study the cooperative output regulation problem for the discrete linear time-delay multi-agent systems by distributed observer approach. In contrast with the same problem for continuous-time linear time-delay multi-agent systems, the problem has two new features. First, in the presence of time-delay, the regulator equations for discrete-time linear systems are different from those for continuous-time linear systems. Second, under the standard assumption on the connectivity of the communication graph, a distributed observer for any continuous-time linear leader system always e…
This paper is concerned with a class of open quantum systems whose dynamic variables have an algebraic structure, similar to that of the Pauli matrices pertaining to finite-level systems. The system interacts with external bosonic fields, and its Hamiltonian and coupling operators depend linearly on the system variables. This results in a Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic differential equation (QSDE) whose drift and dispersion terms are affine and linear functions of the system variables. The quasilinearity of the QSDE leads to tractable dynamics of mean values and higher-order multi-poi…
In this paper, we consider the problem of state-estimation in the presence of Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack. We formulate this problem as an state estimation problem for a plant with switching measured outputs. In the absence of attack, the state-estimator has access to all measured outputs, however, in the presence of attack, only a subset of all measurements are made available to the state-estimator. We seek to find an state-estimator that results in the minimum estimation error for the worst-case attack strategy. First, we parameterize the set of all state-estimators that result in stable …
This paper presents an anomaly detection method using a hybrid observer -- which consists of a discrete state observer and a continuous state observer. We focus our attention on anomalies caused by intelligent attacks, which may bypass existing anomaly detection methods because neither the event sequence nor the observed residuals appear to be anomalous. Based on the relation between the continuous and discrete variables, we define three conflict types and give the conditions under which the detection of the anomalies is guaranteed. We call this method conflict-driven anomaly detection. The ef…
A systematic procedure to synthesize interval observers for nonlinear discrete-time systems is proposed. The feedback gains and other matrices are found from the solutions to semidefinite feasibility programs. Two cases are considered: (1) the interval observer is in the same coordinate frame as the given system, and (2) the interval observer uses a coordinate transformation. The conditions where coordinate transformations are necessary are detailed. Numerical examples are provided to showcase the effectiveness of the interval observers and demonstrate their application to sampled-data systems…
In this paper we provide a set of stability conditions for linear time-varying networked control systems with arbitrary topologies using a piecewise quadratic switching stabilization approach with multiple quadratic Lyapunov functions. We use this set of stability conditions to provide a novel iterative low-complexity algorithm that must be updated and optimized in discrete time for the design of a sparse observer-controller network, for a given plant network with an arbitrary topology. We employ distributed observers by utilizing the output of other subsystems to improve the stability of each…
This work provides a framework for data-driven control of discrete time systems with unknown input-output dynamics and outputs controllable by the inputs. This framework leads to stable and robust real-time control of the system such that a feasible output trajectory can be tracked. This is made possible by rapid real-time stable learning of the unknown dynamics using Hölder-continuous learning schemes that are designed as discrete-time stable disturbance observers. This observer learns from prior input-output history and it ensures finite-time stable convergence of model estimation errors to …
