Impulsive systems are a very flexible class of systems that can be used to represent switched and sampled-data systems. We propose to extend here the previously obtained results on deterministic impulsive systems to the stochastic setting. The concepts of mean-square stability and dwell-times are utilized in order to formulate relevant stability conditions for such systems. These conditions are formulated as convex clock-dependent linear matrix inequality conditions that are applicable to robust analysis and control design, and are verifiable using discretization or sum of squares techniques. Stability conditions under various dwell-time conditions are obtained and non-conservatively turned into state-feedback stabilization conditions. The results are finally applied to the analysis and control of stochastic sampled-data systems. Several comparative examples demonstrate the accuracy and the tractability of the approach.

We prove that impulsive systems, which possess an ISS Lyapunov function, are ISS for impulse time sequences, which satisfy the fixed dwell-time condition. If the ISS Lyapunov function is the exponential one, we provide stronger result, which guarantees uniform ISS of the whole system over sequences of impulse times, which satisfy the generalized average dwell-time condition.
This paper deals with the stability analysis problem of discrete-time switched linear systems with ranged dwell time. A novel concept called L-switching-cycle is proposed, which contains sequences of multiple activation cycles satisfying the prescribed ranged dwell time constraint. Based on L-switching-cycle, two sufficient conditions are proposed to ensure the global uniform asymptotic stability of discrete-time switched linear systems. It is noted that two conditions are equivalent in stability analysis with the same $L$-switching-cycle. These two sufficient conditions can be viewed as gener…
We propose an extension of the theory of control sets to the case of inputs satisfying a dwell-time constraint. Although the class of such inputs is not closed under concatenation, we propose a suitably modified definition of control sets that allows to recover some important properties known in the concatenable case. In particular we apply the control set construction to dwell-time linear switched systems, characterizing their maximal Lyapunov exponent looking only at trajectories whose angular component is periodic. We also use such a construction to characterize supports of invariant measur…
We prove that impulsive systems, which possess an ISS Lyapunov function, are ISS for time sequences satisfying the fixed dwell-time condition. If an ISS Lyapunov function is the exponential one, we provide a stronger result, which guarantees uniform ISS of the whole system over sequences satisfying the generalized average dwell-time condition. Then we prove two small-gain theorems that provide a construction of an ISS Lyapunov function for an interconnection of impulsive systems, if the ISS-Lyapunov functions for subsystems are known. The construction of local ISS Lyapunov functions via linear…
This paper presents an efficient suboptimal model predictive control (MPC) algorithm for nonlinear switched systems subject to minimum dwell time constraints (MTC). While MTC are required for most physical systems due to stability, power and mechanical restrictions, MPC optimization problems with MTC are challenging to solve. To efficiently solve such problems, the on-line MPC optimization problem is decomposed into a sequence of simpler problems, which include two nonlinear programs (NLP) and a rounding step, as typically done in mixed-integer optimal control (MIOC). Unlike the classical appr…

Recent works have shown that the $L_1$ and $L_\infty$-gains are natural performance criteria for linear positive systems as they can be characterized using linear programs. Those performance measures have also been extended to linear positive impulsive and switched systems through the concept of hybrid $L_1\times\ell_1$-gain. For LTI positive systems, the $L_\infty$-gain is known to coincide with the $L_1$-gain of the transposed system and, as a consequence, one can use linear copositive Lyapunov functions for characterizing the $L_\infty$-gain of LTI positive systems. Unfortunately, this does…
Stability and $L_1/\ell_1$-to-$L_1/\ell_1$ performance analysis of uncertain impulsive linear positive systems with applications to the interval observation of impulsive and switched systems with constant delays
This paper deals with input/output-to-state stability (IOSS) of switched nonlinear systems in the discrete-time setting. We present an algorithm to construct periodic switching signals that obey pre-specified restrictions on admissible switches between the subsystems and admissible dwell times on the subsystems, and identify sufficient conditions on the individual subsystems, the admissible switches and admissible dwell times under which a switching signal obtained from our algorithm preserves stability of a switched system with overwhelming probability. We recover our earlier result on probab…
This paper is concerned with the problem of robust reliable control for a class of uncertain 2D discrete switched systems with state delays represented by a model of Roesser type. The parameter uncertainties are assumed to be norm-bounded. Firstly, delay-dependent sufficient condition for the exponential stability of the discrete 2D systems with state delays is established. Then, the concept of average dwell time is extended to 2D switched systems, and a reliable state feedback controller is developed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) such that the resulting closed-loop system is e…
Switched linear hyperbolic partial differential equations are considered in this paper. They model infinite dimensional systems of conservation laws and balance laws, which are potentially affected by a distributed source or sink term. The dynamics and the boundary conditions are subject to abrupt changes given by a switching signal, modeled as a piecewise constant function and possibly a dwell time. By means of Lyapunov techniques some sufficient conditions are obtained for the exponential stability of the switching system, uniformly for all switching signals. Different cases are considered w…

This paper proposes a unified approach for studying global exponential stability of a general class of switched systems described by time-varying nonlinear functional differential equations. Some new delay-independent criteria of global exponential stability are established for this class of systems under arbitrary switching which satisfies some assumptions on the average dwell time. The obtained criteria are shown to cover and improve many previously known results, including, in particular, sufficient conditions for absolute exponential stability of switched time-delay systems with sector non…
We derive novel criteria for designing stabilizing dynamic output-feedback controllers for a class of aperiodic impulsive systems subject to a range dwell-time condition. Our synthesis conditions are formulated as clock-dependent linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) which can be solved numerically, e.g., by using matrix sum-of-squares relaxation methods. We show that our results allow us to design dynamic output-feedback controllers for aperiodic sample-data systems and illustrate the proposed approach by means of a numerical example.
We study the asymptotic stability properties of nonlinear switched systems under the assumption of the existence of a common weak Lyapunov function. We consider the class of nonchaotic inputs, which generalize the different notions of inputs with dwell-time, and the class of general ones. For each of them we provide some sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability in terms of the geometry of certain sets. The results, which extend those of Balde, Jouan about linear systems, are illustrated by many examples.
In this paper, we study the application of switched systems stability criteria to derive delay-dependent conditions for systems affected by both a constant and a time-varying delay. The main novelty of our approach lies on the use of path-complete Lyapunov techniques along with the proposition of a new modified functional to obtain convex analysis conditions while avoiding the need of computing a dwell time for each mode in a switched system representation, as usual in the \textit{switched approach} for time-delay systems. Furthermore, we leverage the developed analysis to obtain LMIs for the …
In this paper we consider switched nonlinear systems under average dwell time switching signals, with an otherwise arbitrary compact index set and with additional constraints in the switchings. We present invariance principles for these systems and derive by using observability-like notions some convergence and asymptotic stability criteria. These results enable us to analyze the stability of solutions of switched systems with both state-dependent constrained switching and switching whose logic has memory, i.e., the active subsystem only can switch to a prescribed subset of subsystems.
For general time-varying or switched (nonlinear) systems, converse Lyapunov theorems for stability are not available. In these cases, the integral input-to-state stability (iISS) property is not equivalent to the existence of an iISS-Lyapunov function but can still be characterized as the combination of global uniform asymptotic stability under zero input (0-GUAS) and uniformly bounded energy input-bounded state (UBEBS). For impulsive systems, asymptotic stability can be weak (when the asymptotic decay depends only on elapsed time) or strong (when such a decay depends also on the number of imp…
The paper is concerned with asymptotic stability properties of linear switched systems. Under the hypothesis that all the subsystems share a non strict quadratic Lyapunov function, we provide a large class of switching signals for which a large class of switched systems are asymptotically stable. For this purpose we define what we call non chaotic inputs, which generalize the different notions of inputs with dwell time. Next we turn our attention to the behaviour for possibly chaotic inputs. To finish we give a sufficient condition for a system composed of a pair of Hurwitz matrices to be asym…

For the identification of switched systems with a measured switching signal, this work aims to analyze the effect of switching strategies on the estimation error. The data for identification is assumed to be collected from globally asymptotically or marginally stable switched systems under switches that are arbitrary or subject to an average dwell time constraint. Then the switched system is estimated by the least-squares (LS) estimator. To capture the effect of the parameters of the switching strategies on the LS estimation error, finite-sample error bounds are developed in this work. The obt…
We provide novel sufficient conditions for stability of nonlinear and time-varying impulsive systems. These conditions generalize, extend, and strengthen many existing results. Different types of input-to-state stability (ISS), as well as zero-input global uniform asymptotic stability (0-GUAS), are covered by employing a two-measure framework and considering stability of both weak (decay depends only on elapsed time) and strong (decay depends on elapsed time and the number of impulses) flavors. By contrast to many existing results, the stability state bounds imposed are uniform with respect to…
Switched systems constitute an important modeling paradigm faithfully describing many engineering systems in which software interacts with the physical world. Despite considerable progress on stability and stabilization of switched systems, the constant evolution of technology demands that we make similar progress with respect to different, and perhaps more complex, objectives. This paper describes one particular approach to address these different objectives based on the construction of approximately equivalent (bisimilar) symbolic models for switched systems. The main contribution of this pa…
In this paper, we study the problem of stabilizing switched linear systems when only limited information about the state and the mode of the system is available, which occurs in many applications involving networked switched systems (such as cyber-physical systems, IoT, etc.). First, we show that switched linear systems with arbitrary switching, i.e., with no constraint on the switching signal, are in general not stabilizable with a finite data rate. Then, drawing on this result, we restrict our attention to systems satisfying a fairly mild slow-switching assumption, in the sense that the swit…
This paper is concerned with the study of both, local and global, uniform asymptotic stability for switched nonlinear time-varying (NLTV) systems through the detectability of output-maps. With this aim the notion of reduced limiting control systems for switched NLTV systems whose switchings verify time/state dependent constraints, and the concept of weakly zero-state detectability for those reduced limiting systems are introduced. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the (global)uniform asymptotic stability of families of trajectories of the switched system are obtained in terms of this det…
