We analyze the robustness of the exponential stability of infinite-dimensional sampled-data systems with unbounded control operators. The unbounded perturbations we consider are the so-called Desch-Schappacher perturbations, which arise, e.g., from the boundary perturbations of systems described by partial differential equations. As the main result, we show that the exponential stability of the sampled-data system is preserved under all Desch-Schappacher perturbations sufficiently small in a certain sense.
This paper addresses the stability analysis of infinite-dimensional sampled-data systems under unbounded perturbations. We present two classes of unbounded perturbations preserving the exponential stability of sampled-data systems. To this end, we investigate the continuity of strongly continuous semigroups with respect to their generators, considering the uniform operator topology.
We revisit and extend the Riccati theory, unifying continuous-time linear-quadratic optimal permanent and sampled-data control problems, in finite and infinite time horizons. In a nutshell, we prove that:-- when the time horizon T tends to $+\infty$, one passes from the Sampled-Data Difference Riccati Equation (SD-DRE) to the Sampled-Data Algebraic Riccati Equation (SD-ARE), and from the Permanent Differential Riccati Equation (P-DRE) to the Permanent Algebraic Riccati Equation (P-ARE);-- when the maximal step of the time partition $Δ$ tends to $0$, one passes from (SD-DRE) to (P-DRE), and fro…
In this paper we give a representation formula for the limit of the fnite horizon problem as the horizon becomes infinite, with a nonnegative Lagrangian and unbounded data. It is related to the limit of the discounted infinite horizon problem, as the discount factor goes to zero. We give sufficient conditions to characterize the limit function as unique nonnegative solution of the associated HJB equation. We also briefly discuss the ergodic problem.
In this paper the theory of robust output regulation of distributed parameter systems with infinite-dimensional exosystems is extended for plants with unbounded control and observation. As the main result, we present the internal model principle for linear infinite-dimensional systems with unbounded input and output operators. We do this for two different definitions of an internal model found in the literature, namely, the p-copy internal model and the $\mathcal{G}$-conditions. We also introduce a new way of defining an internal model for infinite-dimensional systems. The theoretic results ar…
In this paper, we consider the control problem with the Average-Value-at-Risk (AVaR) criteria of the possibly unbounded $L^{1}$-costs in infinite horizon on a Markov Decision Process (MDP). With a suitable state aggregation and by choosing a priori a global variable $s$ heuristically, we show that there exist optimal policies for the infinite horizon problem. To our knowledge, this is the first work of deriving dynamic programming equations with $L^1$-unbounded costs via AVaR-operator.
We make two remarks about the null-controllability of the heat equation with Dirichlet condition in unbounded domains. Firstly, we give a geometric necessary condition (for interior null-controllability in the Euclidean setting)which implies that one can not go infinitely far away from the control region without tending to the boundary (if any), but also applies when the distance to the control region is bounded. The proof builds on heat kernel estimates. Secondly, we describe a class of null-controllable heat equations on unbounded product domains. Elementary examples include an infinite stri…
Late-lumping feedback design for infinite-dimensional linear systems with unbounded input operators is considered. The proposed scheme is suitable for the approximation of backstepping and flatness-based designs and relies on a decomposition of the feedback into a bounded and an unbounded part. Approximation applies to the bounded part only, while the unbounded part is assumed to allow for an exact realization. Based on spectral results, the convergence of the closed-loop dynamics to the desired dynamics is established. By duality, similar results apply to the approximation of the observer out…
The paper concerns the infinite dimensional Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation related to optimal control problem regulated by a transport equation with boundary control. A suitable viscosity solution approach is needed in view of the presence of the unbounded control-related term in the Hilbertian state equation. An existence-and-uniqueness result is obtained.
We consider problems of the calculus of variations on unbounded time scales. We prove the validity of the Euler-Lagrange equation on time scales for infinite horizon problems, and a new transversality condition.
We prove existence and uniqueness of the mild solution of an infinite dimensional, operator valued, backward stochastic Riccati equation. We exploit the regularizing properties of the semigroup generated by the unbounded operator involved in the equation. Then the results will be applied to characterize the value function and optimal feedback law for a infinite dimensional, linear quadratic control problem with stochastic coefficients.
In this paper we consider an infinite time horizon risk-sensitive optimal stopping problem for a Feller--Markov process with an unbounded terminal cost function. We show that in the unbounded case an associated Bellman equation may have multiple solutions and we give a probabilistic interpretation for the minimal and the maximal one. Also, we show how to approximate them using finite time horizon problems. The analysis, covering both discrete and continuous time case, is supported with illustrative examples.
This note deals with Bounded-Input-Bounded-Output (BIBO) stability for semilinear infinite-dimensional dynamical systems allowing for boundary control and boundary observation. We give sufficient conditions that guarantee BIBO stability based on Lipschitz conditions with respect to interpolation spaces. Our results can be applied to guarantee feasibility of funnel control for coupled ODE-PDE systems, as shown by means of an example from chemical engineering.
We study the infinite horizon Linear-Quadratic problem and the associated algebraic Riccati equations for systems with unbounded control actions. The operator-theoretic context is motivated by composite systems of Partial Differential Equations (PDE) with boundary or point control. Specific focus is placed on systems of coupled hyperbolic/parabolic PDE with an overall `predominant' hyperbolic character, such as, e.g., some models for thermoelastic or fluid-structure interactions. While unbounded control actions lead to Riccati equations with unbounded (operator) coefficients, unlike the parabo…
The objective of the paper is to investigate the approximate controllability property of a linear stochastic control system with values in a separable real Hilbert space. In a first step we prove the existence and uniqueness for the solution of the dual linear backward stochastic differential equation. This equation has the particularity that in addition to an unbounded operator acting on the Y-component of the solution there is still another one acting on the Z-component. With the help of this dual equation we then deduce the duality between approximate controllability and observability. Fina…
In this paper, we propose a method for bounding the probability that a stochastic differential equation (SDE) system violates a safety specification over the infinite time horizon. SDEs are mathematical models of stochastic processes that capture how states evolve continuously in time. They are widely used in numerous applications such as engineered systems (e.g., modeling how pedestrians move in an intersection), computational finance (e.g., modeling stock option prices), and ecological processes (e.g., population change over time). Previously the safety verification problem has been tackled …
A finite horizon optimal stopping problem for an infinite dimensional diffusion $X$ is analyzed by means of variational techniques. The diffusion is driven by a SDE on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ with a non-linear diffusion coefficient $σ(X)$ and a generic unbounded operator $A$ in the drift term. When the gain function $Θ$ is time-dependent and fulfils mild regularity assumptions, the value function $\mathcal{U}$ of the optimal stopping problem is shown to solve an infinite-dimensional, parabolic, degenerate variational inequality on an unbounded domain. Once the coefficient $σ(X)$ is speci…
This paper addresses the following question: "Suppose that a state-feedback controller stabilizes an infinite-dimensional linear continuous-time system. If we choose the parameters of an event/self-triggering mechanism appropriately, is the event/self-triggered control system stable under all sufficiently small nonlinear Lipschitz perturbations?" We assume that the stabilizing feedback operator is compact. This assumption is used to guarantee the strict positiveness of inter-event times and the existence of the mild solution of evolution equations with unbounded control operators. First, for t…
