This paper addresses the natural question: ``How should frames be compared?'' We answer this question by quantifying the overcompleteness of all frames with the same index set. We introduce the concept of a frame measure function: a function which maps each frame to a continuous function. The comparison of these functions induces an equivalence and partial order that allows for a meaningful comparison of frames indexed by the same set. We define the ultrafilter measure function, an explicit frame measure function that we show is contained both algebraically and topologically inside all frame measure functions. We explore additional properties of frame measure functions, showing that they are additive on a large class of supersets-- those that come from so called non-expansive frames. We apply our results to the Gabor setting, computing the frame measure function of Gabor frames and establishing a new result about supersets of Gabor frames.
We develop elements of a general dilation theory for operator-valued measures and bounded linear maps between operator algebras that are not necessarily completely-bounded. We prove our main results by extending and generalizing some known results from the theory of frames and framings.
For every frame spectral measure $ μ$, there exists a discrete measure $ ν$ as a frame measure. Since if $ μ$ is not a frame spectral measure, then there is not any general statement about the existence of frame measures $ ν$ for $ μ$, we were motivated to examine Bessel and frame measures. We construct infinitely many measures $ μ$ which admit frame measures $ ν$, and we show that there exist infinitely many frame spectral measures $ μ$ such that besides having a discrete frame measure, they admit continuous frame measures too.
Motivated by the existence problem of Fourier frames on fractal measures, we introduce Bessel and frame measures for a given finite measure on $\br^d$, as extensions of the notions of Bessel and frame spectra that correspond to bases of exponential functions. Not every finite compactly supported Borel measure admits frame measures. We present a general way of constructing Bessel/frame measures for a given measure. The idea is that if a convolution of two measures admits a Bessel measure then one can use the Fourier transform of one of the measures in the convolution as a weight for the Bessel …
Motivated to generalize the Fourier frame concept to Banach spaces we introduce (p, q)-Bessel/frame measures for a given finite measure on LCA groups. We also present a general way of constructing (p, q)-Bessel/frame measures for a given measure. Moreover, we prove that if a measure has an associated (p, q)-frame measure, then it must have a certain uniformity in the sense that the weight is distributed quite uniformly on its support. Next, we show that if the measures $μ$ and $λ$ without atoms whose supports form a packing pair, then $μ\astλ+δ_g\astμ$ does not admit any (p, q)-frame measure. …
We study certain infinite-dimensional probability measures in connection with frame analysis. Earlier work on frame-measures has so far focused on the case of finite-dimensional frames. We point out that there are good reasons for a sharp distinction between stochastic analysis involving frames in finite vs infinite dimensions. For the case of infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, we study three cases of measures. We first show that, for $\mathcal{H}$ infinite dimensional, 1 one must resort to infinite dimensional measure spaces which properly contain $\mathcal{H}$. The three cases…
Considering a finite Borel measure $ μ$ on $ \mathbb{R}^d $, a pair of conjugate exponents $ p, q $, and a compatible semi-inner product on $ L^p(μ) $, we introduce $ (p,q) $-Bessel and $ (p,q) $-frame measures as a generalization of the concepts of Bessel and frame measures. In addition, we define notions of $ q $-Bessel and $ q$-frame in the semi-inner product space $ L^p(μ) $. Every finite Borel measure $ν$ is a $(p,q)$-Bessel measure for a finite measure $ μ$. We construct a large number of examples of finite measures $ μ$ which admit infinite $ (p,q) $-Bessel measures $ ν$. We show that i…
In this paper, we prove that the entropy dimension of a frame spectral measure is superior than or equal to the Beurling dimension of its frame spectrum.
This paper gives a review of the recent progress in the study of Fourier bases and Fourier frames on self-affine measures. In particular, we emphasize the new matrix analysis approach for checking the completeness of a mutually orthogonal set. This method helps us settle down a long-standing conjecture that Hadamard triples generates self-affine spectral measures. It also gives us non-trivial examples of fractal measures with Fourier frames. Furthermore, a new avenue is open to investigate whether the Middle Third Cantor measure admits Fourier frames.
We examine Fourier frames and, more generally, frame measures for different probability measures. We prove that if a measure has an associated frame measure, then it must have a certain uniformity in the sense that the weight is distributed quite uniformly on its support. To be more precise, by considering certain absolute continuity properties of the measure and its translation, we recover the characterization on absolutely continuous measures $g\, dx$ with Fourier frames obtained in \cite{Lai11}. Moreover, we prove that the frame bounds are pushed away by the essential infimum and supremum o…
Let $μ$ be a compactly supported absolutely continuous probability measure on ${\Bbb R}^n$, we show that $μ$ admits Fourier frames if and only if its Radon-Nikodym derivative is upper and lower bounded almost everywhere on its support. As a consequence, we prove that if an equal weight absolutely continuous self-similar measure on ${\Bbb R}^1$ admits Fourier frame, then the measure must be a characteristic function of self-similar tile. In particular, this shows for almost everywhere $1/2<λ<1$, the $λ$-Bernoulli convolutions cannot admit Fourier frames.
We generalize the compatible tower condition given by Strichartz to the almost-Parseval-frame tower and show that non-trivial examples of almost-Parseval-frame tower exist. By doing so, we demonstrate the first singular fractal measure which has only finitely many mutually orthogonal exponentials (and hence it does not admit any exponential orthonormal bases), but it still admits Fourier frames.
In the signal-processing literature, a frame is a mechanism for performing analysis and reconstruction in a Hilbert space. By contrast, in quantum theory, a positive operator-valued measure (POVM) decomposes a Hilbert-space vector for the purpose of computing measurement probabilities. Frames and their most common generalizations can be seen to give rise to POVMs, but does every reasonable POVM arise from a type of frame? In this paper we answer this question using a Radon-Nikodym-type result.
We study Fourier bases on invariant measures generated by affine iterated function systems in ${\mathbb R}^d$ with integer coefficients. We show that, for simple digit sets, these systems satisfy the open set condition and have no overlap. We present natural geometric conditions under which such measures have an orthonormal basis or a frame of exponential functions with frequencies being a subset of ${\mathbb Z}^d$. Moreover, we characterize when such measures have a spectrum in ${\Bbb Z}^d$.
A finite Borel measure $μ$ in ${\mathbb R}^d$ is called a frame-spectral measure if it admits an exponential frame (or Fourier frame) for $L^2(μ)$. It has been conjectured that a frame-spectral measure must be translationally absolutely continuous, which is a criterion describing the local uniformity of a measure on its support. In this paper, we show that if any measures $ν$ and $λ$ without atoms whose supports form a packing pair, then $ν\ast λ+δ_t\astν$ is translationally singular and it does not admit any Fourier frame. In particular, we show that the sum of one-fourth and one-sixteenth Ca…

This paper presents an overview of close parallels that exist between the theory of positive operator-valued measures (POVMs) associated with a separable Hilbert space and the theory of frames on that space, including its most important generalizations. The concept of a framed POVM is introduced, and classical frames, fusion frames, generalized frames, and other variants of frames are all shown to to arise as framed POVMs. This observation allows drawing on a rich existing theory of POVMs to provide new perspectives in the study of frames.
Let $μ$ be a positive measure on $R^d$. It is known that if the space $L^2(μ)$ has a frame of exponentials then the measure $μ$ must be of "pure type": it is either discrete, absolutely continuous or singular continuous. It has been conjectured that a similar phenomenon should be true within the class of singular continuous measures, in the sense that $μ$ cannot admit an exponential frame if it has components of different dimensions. We prove that this is not the case by showing that the sum of an arc length measure and a surface measure can have a frame of exponentials. On the other hand we p…
We study the construction of exponential frames and Riesz sequences for a class of fractal measures on ${\mathbb R}^d$ generated by infinite convolution of discrete measures using the idea of frame towers and Riesz-sequence towers. The exactness and overcompleteness of the constructed exponential frame or Riesz sequence is completely classified in terms of the cardinality at each level of the tower. Using a version of the solution of the Kadison-Singer problem, known as the $R_ε$-conjecture, we show that all these measures contain exponential Riesz sequences of infinite cardinality. Furthermor…
In this paper we show that the surface measure on the boundary of a convex body of everywhere positive Gaussian curvature does not admit a Fourier frame. This answers a question proposed by Lev and provides the first example of a uniformly distributed measure supported on a set of Lebesgue measure zero that does not admit a Fourier frame. In contrast, we show that the surface measure on the boundary of a polytope always admits a Fourier frame. We also explore orthogonal bases and frames adopted to sets under consideration. More precisely, given a compact manifold $M$ without a boundary and $D …
We will give an outline of the main results in our recent AMS Memoir, and include some new results, exposition and open problems. In that memoir we developed a general dilation theory for operator valued measures acting on Banach spaces where operator-valued measures (or maps) are not necessarily completely bounded. The main results state that any operator-valued measure, not necessarily completely bounded, always has a dilation to a projection-valued measure acting on a Banach space, and every bounded linear map, again not necessarily completely bounded, on a Banach algebra has a bounded homo…
The goal is to extend Gleason's notion of a frame function, which is essential in his fundamental theorem in quantum measurement, to a more general function acting on 1-tight, so-called, Parseval frames. We refer to these functions as Gleason functions for Parseval frames. The reason for our generalization is that positive operator valued measures (POVMs) are essentially equivalent to Parseval frames, and that POVMs arise naturally in quantum measurement theory. We prove that under the proper assumptions, Gleason functions for Parseval frames are quadratic forms, as well as other results analo…
We study the mapping properties of fractional maximal operators in Sobolev and Campanato spaces in metric measure spaces. We show that, under certain restrictions on the underlying metric measure space, fractional maximal operators improve the Sobolev regularity of functions and map functions in Campanato spaces to Hölder continuous functions. We also give an example of a space where fractional maximal function of a Lipschitz function fails to be continuous.
We investigate some properties of balayage, or, sweeping (out), of measures with respect to subclasses of subharmonic functions. The following issues are considered: relationships between balayage of measures with respect to classes of harmonic or subharmonic functions and balayage of measures with respect to significantly smaller classes of specific classes of functions; integration of measures and balayage of measures; sensitivity of balayage of measures to polar sets, etc.
We develop and use some key concepts of potential theory, such as balayage and duality between measures and their potentials, to study the distribution of masses of subharmonic functions while restrictions to their growth near the boundary of their domain of definition. They are formulated and proved in terms of the Riesz measure for a subharmonic function. In this article, applications to holomorphic functions concern the distribution of their zero sets under restrictions to growth of this functions. Auxiliary results of our article may also be of independent interest. This is, first of all, …
The (e,n)-complexity functions describe total instability of trajectories in dynamical systems. They reflect an ability of trajectories going through a Borel set to diverge on the distance $ε$ during the time interval n. Behavior of the (e, n)-complexity functions as n goes to infinity is reflected in the properties of special measures. These measures are constructed as limits of atomic measures supported at points of (e,n)-separated sets. We study such measures. In particular, we prove that they are invariant if the (e,n)-complexity function grows subexponentially. Keywords: Topological entro…
A complete family of functional Steiner formulas is established. As applications, an explicit representation of functional intrinsic volumes using special mixed Monge-Ampère measures and a new version of the Hadwiger theorem on convex functions are obtained.
