In this paper we develop the theory of topological categories over a base category, that is, a theory of topological functors. Our notion of topological functor is similar to (but not the same) the existing notions in the literature (see Borceux "Handbook of categorical algebra 2, 7.3"), and it aims at the same examples. In our sense, a (pre) topological functor is a functor that creates cartesian families. A topological functor is, in particular, a fibration, and our emphasis is put in this fact.
We give an account, in terms of fibered categories and their fibrewise duals, of aspects of the theory of bundle functors and star-bundle functors in differential geometry.
We introduce the notion of a lax monoidal fibration and we show how it can be conveniently used to deal with various algebraic structures that play an important role in some definitions of the opetopic sets (Baez-Dolan, Hermida-Makkai-Power). We present the 'standard' such structures, the exponential fibrations of basic fibrations and three areas of applications. First area is related to the T-categories of A. Burroni. The monoids in the Burroni lax monoidal fibrations form the fibration of T-categories. The construction of the relative Burroni fibrations and free T-categories in this context,…
We investigate canonical factorizations of ordered functors of ordered groupoids through star-surjective functors. Our main construction is a quotient ordered groupoid, depending on an ordered version of the notion of normal subgroupoid, that results is the factorization of an ordered functor as a star-surjective functor followed by a star-injective functor. Any star-injective functor possesses a universal factorization through a covering, by Ehresmann's Maximum Enlargement Theorem. We also show that any ordered functor has a canonical factorization through a functor with the ordered homotopy …
We give an elementary construction of the dual fibration of a fibration. It does not use the non-elementary notion of (pseudo-) functor into the category of categories.
We give an elementary exposition of some fundamental facts about fibered (or rather opfibered) categories, in terms of monads and 2-categories. The account avoids any mention of category-valued functors and pseudofunctors.
We lift the standard equivalence between fibrations and indexed categories to an equivalence between monoidal fibrations and monoidal indexed categories, namely weak monoidal pseudofunctors to the 2-category of categories. In doing so, we investigate the relation between this `global' monoidal structure where the total category is monoidal and the fibration strictly preserves the structure, and a `fibrewise' one where the fibres are monoidal and the reindexing functors strongly preserve the structure, first hinted by Shulman. In particular, when the domain is cocartesian monoidal, lax monoidal…
We prove that cloven Grothendieck fibrations over a fixed base $\ct{B}$ are the pseudo-coalgebras for a lax idempotent 2-comonad on $\ct{Cat}/\ct{B}$. We show this via an original observation that the known colax idempotent 2-monad for fibrations over a fixed base has a right 2-adjoint. As an important consequence, we obtain an original cofree construction of a fibration on a functor. We also give a new, conceptual proof of the fact that the forgetful 2-functor from split fibrations to cloven fibrations over a fixed base has both a left 2-adjoint and a right 2-adjoint, in terms of coherence ph…
We define and discuss lax and weighted colimits of diagrams in $\infty$-categories and show that the coCartesian fibration associated to a functor is given by its lax colimit. A key ingredient, of independent interest, is a simple characterization of the free Cartesian fibration associated to a a functor of $\infty$-categories. As an application of these results, we prove that lax representable functors are preserved under exponentiation, and also that the total space of a presentable Cartesian fibration between $\infty$-categories is presentable, generalizing a theorem of Makkai and Paré to t…
Fibrations over a category $B$, introduced to category theory by Grothendieck, encode pseudo-functors $B^{op} \rightsquigarrow {\bf Cat}$, while the special case of discrete fibrations encode presheaves $B^{op} \to {\bf Set}$. A two-sided discrete variation encodes functors $B^{op} \times A \to {\bf Set}$, which are also known as profunctors from $A$ to $B$. By work of Street, all of these fibration notions can be defined internally to an arbitrary 2-category or bicategory. While the two-sided discrete fibrations model profunctors internally to ${\bf Cat}$, unexpectedly, the dual two-sided cod…
In this paper we study categories $(F,\mathbf{C},\mathbf{D})$ and $(\mathbb{F},\mathbf{C},\mathbf{Set})$ and prove them to be fibred on $\mathbf{C}$. Then we examine Grothendieck construction in the context of an ordinary functor $F: \mathbf{C} \rightarrow \mathbf{D}$ through the concept of trivial categorification, using an appropriate functor $\mathbf{F}: \mathbf{C} \xrightarrow{F} \mathbf{D} \xrightarrow{I} \mathbf{Cat}$ to construct $\int_{\mathbf{C}^{op}} \bar{\mathbf{F}}$. This category characterizes a functor as an abstract right category action while its dual $\mathcal{X} \rtimes_{\mat…
In some bicategories, the 1-cells are `morphisms' between the 0-cells, such as functors between categories, but in others they are `objects' over the 0-cells, such as bimodules, spans, distributors, or parametrized spectra. Many bicategorical notions do not work well in these cases, because the `morphisms between 0-cells', such as ring homomorphisms, are missing. We can include them by using a pseudo double category, but usually these morphisms also induce base change functors acting on the 1-cells. We avoid complicated coherence problems by describing base change `nonalgebraically', using cat…
We give a description up to homeomorphism of $S^3$ and $S^2$ as classifying spaces of small categories, such that the Hopf map $S^3\to{}S^2$ is the realization of a functor.
The description of algebraic structure of n-fold loop spaces can be done either using the formalism of topological operads, or using variations of Segal's $Γ$-spaces. The formalism of topological operads generalises well to different categories yielding such notions as $\mathbb E_n$-algebras in chain complexes, while the $Γ$-space approach faces difficulties. In this paper we discuss how, by attempting to extend the Segal approach to arbitrary categoires, one arrives to the problem of understanding "weak" sections of a homotopical Grothendieck fibration. We propose a model for such sections, c…
We use the terms $\infty$-categories and $\infty$-functors to mean the objects and morphisms in an $\infty$-cosmos: a simplicially enriched category satisfying a few axioms, reminiscent of an enriched category of fibrant objects. Quasi-categories, Segal categories, complete Segal spaces, marked simplicial sets, iterated complete Segal spaces, $θ_n$-spaces, and fibered versions of each of these are all $\infty$-categories in this sense. Previous work in this series shows that the basic category theory of $\infty$-categories and $\infty$-functors can be developed only in reference to the axioms …
The contributions of this paper are twofold. Within the framework of Grothendieck's fibrational category theory, we present a web of fundamental 2-adjunctions surrounding the formation of the category of all small diagrams in a given category and the formation of the Grothendieck category of a functor into the category of small categories. We demonstrate the utility of these adjunctions, in part by deriving three formulae for (co-)limits: a `twisted' generalization of the well-known Fubini formula, as first established by Chachólski and Scherer; a new `general colimit decomposition formula'; a…
For a small simplicial category A, we prove that the homotopy colimit functor from the category of simplicial diagrams on A to the category of simplicial sets over the homotopy-coherent nerve of A provides a left Quillen equivalence between the projective model structure on the former category and the covariant model structure on the latter. We compare this Quillen equivalence to the straightening-unstraightening equivalence previously established by Lurie, where the left adjoint goes in the opposite direction. The existence of left Quillen functors in both directions considerably simplifies t…
We show that homotopy pullbacks of sheaves of simplicial sets over a Grothendieck topology distribute over homotopy colimits; this generalizes a result of Puppe about topological spaces. In addition, we show that inverse image functors between categories of simplicial sheaves preserve homotopy pullback squares. The method we use introduces the notion of a sharp map, which is analogous to the notion of a quasi-fibration of spaces, and seems to be of independent interest.
For a small category $\mathcal{D}$ we define fibrations of simplicial presheaves on the category $\mathcal{D}\timesΔ$, which we call localized $\mathcal{D}$-left fibration. We show these fibrations can be seen as fibrant objects in a model structure, the localized $\mathcal{D}$-covariant model structure, that is Quillen equivalent to a category of functors valued in simplicial presheaves on $\mathcal{D}$, where the Quillen equivalence is given via a generalization of the Grothendieck construction. We use our understanding of this construction to give a detailed characterization of fibrations a…
We show that the conditions in Steimle's 'additivity theorem for cobordism categories' can be weakened to only require \emph{locally} (co)Cartesian fibrations, making it applicable to a larger class of functors. As an application we compute the difference in classifying spaces between the infinity category of cospans of finite sets and its homotopy category.
There are infinitely many variants of the notion of Kan fibration that, together with suitable choices of cofibrations and the usual notion of weak equivalence of simplicial sets, satisfy Quillen's axioms for a homotopy model category. The combinatorics underlying these fibrations is purely finitary and seems interesting both for its own sake and for its interaction with homotopy types. To show that these notions of fibration are indeed distinct, one needs to understand how iterates of Kan's Ex functor act on graphs and on nerves of small categories.
We want to replace categories, functors and natural transformations by categories, open functors and open natural transformations. In analogy with open dynamical systems, the adjective open is added here to mean that some external information is taken into account. For the particular use of the authors, such an open functor is described by two components: a presheaf representing the possible external influences for each input, and a classical functor from the category of elements of this presheaf to the category of results. Considering the appropriate notion of composition then leads to a bica…
Tangent categories are categories equipped with a tangent functor: an endofunctor with certain natural transformations which make it behave like the tangent bundle functor on the category of smooth manifolds. They provide an abstract setting for differential geometry by axiomatizing key aspects of the subject which allow the basic theory of these geometric settings to be captured. Importantly, they have models not only in classical differential geometry and its extensions, but also in algebraic geometry, combinatorics, computer science, and physics. This paper develops the theory of "different…
We generalise the usual notion of fibred category; first to fibred 2-categories and then to fibred bicategories. Fibred 2-categories correspond to 2-functors from a 2-category into 2-Cat. Fibred bicategories correspond to trihomomorphisms from a bicategory into Bicat. We describe the Grothendieck construction for each kind of fibration and present a few examples of each. Fibrations in our sense, between bicategories, are closed under composition and are stable under equiv-comma. The free such fibration on a homomorphism is obtained by taking an oplax comma along an identity.
Some basic features of the simultaneous inclusion of discrete fibrations and discrete opfibrations in categories over a base category X are considered. In particular, we illustrate the formulas (|P)x = ten(x/X,P) ; (P|)x = hom(X/x,P) which give the reflection |P and the coreflection P| of a category P over X in discrete fibrations. The explicit use of the "tensor functor" ten := \comp(- \times -) : Cat/X \times Cat/X \to Set given by the components of products, allows a vast generalization of the corresponding analysis in the two-valued context. For any df A, the functor ten(A,-) : Cat/X \to S…
Topos theory is a category-theoretic axiomatization of set theory. Model categories are a category-theoretical framework for abstract homotopy theory. They are complete and cocomplete categories endowed with three classes of morphisms (called fibrations, cofibrations and equivalences) satisfying certain axioms. Functors from the category of Weil algebras to the category of sets are called Weil spaces by Wolfgang Bertram and form the Weil topos} after Eduardo J. Dubuc. The Weil topos is endowed intrinsically with the Dubuc functor, a functor from a larger category containing Weil algebras to th…
A category of FI type is one which is sufficiently similar to finite sets and injections so as to admit nice representation stability results. Several common examples admit a Grothendieck fibration to finite sets and injections. We begin by carefully reviewing the theory of fibrations of categories with motivating examples relevant to algebra and representation theory. We classify which functors between FI type categories are fibrations, and thus obtain sufficient conditions for an FI type category to be the result of a Grothendieck construction.
Derived D-Geometry is considered as a convenient language for a coordinate-free investigation of nonlinear partial differential equations up to symmetries. One of the first issues one meets in the functor of points approach to derived D-Geometry, is the question of a model structure on the category C of differential non-negatively graded quasi-coherent commutative algebras over the sheaf D of differential operators of an appropriate underlying variety. In [BPP15a], we described a cofibrantly generated model structure on C via the definition of its weak equivalences and its fibrations. In the p…
We present a doctrinal approach to category theory, obtained by abstracting from the indexed inclusions (via discrete fibrations and opfibrations) of the left and of the right actions of X in Cat in categories over X. Namely, a "weak temporal doctrine" consists essentially of two indexed functors with the same codomain, such that the induced functors have both left and right adjoints satisfying some exactness conditions, in the spirit of categorical logic. The derived logical rules include some adjunction-like laws, involving the truth-values-enriched hom and tensor functors, which display a n…
We study the interaction between the notions of filteredness, fractions and fibrations in the theory of bicategories, generalizing classical results for categories. We give an explicit formula for filtered pseudo-colimits of categories indexed by a bicategory, and we use it to compute the hom-categories of a bicategory of fractions. As a consequence, we show that the canonical pseudo-functor into a bicategory of fractions is exact.
Given an $\infty$-bicategory $\mathbb{D}$ with underlying $\infty$-category $\mathcal{D}$, we construct a Cartesian fibration $\operatorname{Tw}(\mathbb{D})\to \mathcal{D} \times \mathcal{D}^{\operatorname{op}}$, which we call the enhanced twisted arrow $\infty$-category, classifying the restricted mapping category functor $\operatorname{Map}_{\mathbb{D}}:\mathcal{D}^{\operatorname{op}}\times \mathcal{D} \to \mathbb{D}^{\operatorname{op}} \times \mathbb{D} \to \operatorname{Cat}_{\infty}$. With the aid of this new construction, we provide a description of the $\infty$-category of natural trans…
In this paper we construct an analogue of Lurie's "unstraightening" construction that we refer to as the "comprehension construction". Its input is a cocartesian fibration $p \colon E \to B$ between $\infty$-categories together with a third $\infty$-category $A$. The comprehension construction then defines a map from the quasi-category of functors from $A$ to $B$ to the large quasi-category of cocartesian fibrations over $A$ that acts on $f \colon A \to B$ by forming the pullback of $p$ along $f$. To illustrate the versatility of this construction, we define the covariant and contravariant Yon…

We develop further the theory of weak factorization systems and algebraic weak factorization systems. In particular, we give a method for constructing (algebraic) weak factorization systems whose right maps can be thought of as (uniform) fibrations and that satisfy the (functorial) Frobenius condition. As applications, we obtain a new proof that the Quillen model structure for Kan complexes is right proper, avoiding entirely the use of topological realization and minimal fibrations, and we solve an open problem in the study of Voevodsky's simplicial model of type theory, proving a constructive…
The theory developed by Gambino and Kock, of polynomials over a locally cartesian closed category E, is generalised for E just having pullbacks. The 2-categorical analogue of the theory of polynomials and polynomial functors is given, and its relationship with Street's theory of fibrations within 2-categories is explored. Johnstone's notion of "bagdomain data" is adapted to the present framework to make it easier to completely exhibit examples of polynomial monads.
