We want to replace categories, functors and natural transformations by categories, open functors and open natural transformations. In analogy with open dynamical systems, the adjective open is added here to mean that some external information is taken into account. For the particular use of the authors, such an open functor is described by two components: a presheaf representing the possible external influences for each input, and a classical functor from the category of elements of this presheaf to the category of results. Considering the appropriate notion of composition then leads to a bicategory. This report describes this bicategory with as little auxiliary constructions as possible and gives all the details of all the proofs needed to establish the bicategory, as explicitly as possible. Subsequent reports will give other presentations of this bicategory and compare it to other existing constructions, e.g. spans, fibrations, pseudoadjunctions, Kleisli bicategories of pseudo-monads, and profunctors (or distributors).
The paper studies analytic functors between presheaf categories. Generalising results of A. Joyal and of R. Hasegawa for analytic endofunctors on the category of sets, we give two characterisations of analytic functors between presheaf categories over groupoids: (i) as functors preserving filtered colimits, quasi-pullbacks, and cofiltered limits; and (ii) as functors preserving filtered colimits and wide quasi-pullbacks. The development establishes that small groupoids, analytic functors between their presheaf categories, and quasi-cartesian natural transformations between them form a 2-catego…
For a small category K enriched over a suitable monoidal category V, the free completion of K under colimits is the presheaf category [K*,V]. If K is large, its free completion under colimits is the V-category PK of small presheaves on K, where a presheaf is small if it is a left Kan extension of some presheaf with small domain. We study the existence of limits and of monoidal closed structures on PK.
It is known that monoidal functors between internal groupoids in the category Grp of groups constitute the bicategory of fractions of the 2-category Grpd(Grp) of internal groupoids, internal functors and internal natural transformations in Grp with respect to weak equivalences. Monoidal functors can be described equivalently by a kind of weak morphisms introduced by B. Noohi under the name of "butter ies". In order to internalize monoidal functors in a wide context, we introduce the notion of internal butterflies between internal crossed modules in a semi-abelian category C, and we show that t…
We develop a general theory of extensions of flat functors along geometric morphisms of toposes, and apply it to the study of the class of theories whose classifying topos is equivalent to a presheaf topos. As a result, we obtain a characterization theorem providing necessary and sufficient semantic conditions for a theory to be of presheaf type. This theorem subsumes all the previous partial results obtained on the subject and has several corollaries which can be used in practice for testing whether a given theory is of presheaf type as well as for generating new examples of theories belongin…
This paper has two objectives. The first is to develop the theory of bicategories enriched in a monoidal bicategory -- categorifying the classical theory of categories enriched in a monoidal category -- up to a description of the free cocompletion of an enriched bicategory under a class of weighted bicolimits. The second objective is to describe a universal property of the process assigning to a monoidal category V the equipment of V-enriched categories, functors, transformations, and modules; we do so by considering, more generally, the assignation sending an equipment C to the equipment of C…
We study the interaction between the notions of filteredness, fractions and fibrations in the theory of bicategories, generalizing classical results for categories. We give an explicit formula for filtered pseudo-colimits of categories indexed by a bicategory, and we use it to compute the hom-categories of a bicategory of fractions. As a consequence, we show that the canonical pseudo-functor into a bicategory of fractions is exact.
It is well known that to give an oplax functor of bicategories $\mathbf{1}\to\mathscr{C}$ is to give a comonad in $\mathscr{C}$. Here we generalize this fact, replacing the terminal bicategory by any bicategory $\mathscr{A}$ for which the composition functor admits generic factorisations. We call bicategories with this property generic, and show that for generic bicategories $\mathscr{A}$ one may express the data of an oplax functor $\mathscr{A}\to\mathscr{C}$ much like the data of a comonad; the main advantage of this description being that it does not directly involve composition in $\mathsc…
This paper outlines the construction of categorical models of higher-order quantum computation. We construct a concrete denotational semantics of Selinger and Valiron's quantum lambda calculus, which was previously an open problem. We do this by considering presheaves over appropriate base categories arising from first-order quantum computation. The main technical ingredients are Day's convolution theory and Kelly and Freyd's notion of continuity of functors. We first give an abstract description of the properties required of the base categories for the model construction to work. We then exhi…
We develop further the theory of operads and analytic functors. In particular, we introduce a bicategory that has operads as 0-cells, operad bimodules as 1-cells and operad bimodule maps as 2-cells, and prove that this bicategory is cartesian closed. In order to obtain this result, we extend the theory of distributors and the formal theory of monads.
We study polynomial functors over locally cartesian closed categories. After setting up the basic theory, we show how polynomial functors assemble into a double category, in fact a framed bicategory. We show that the free monad on a polynomial endofunctor is polynomial. The relationship with operads and other related notions is explored.
Given an $\infty$-bicategory $\mathbb{D}$ with underlying $\infty$-category $\mathcal{D}$, we construct a Cartesian fibration $\operatorname{Tw}(\mathbb{D})\to \mathcal{D} \times \mathcal{D}^{\operatorname{op}}$, which we call the enhanced twisted arrow $\infty$-category, classifying the restricted mapping category functor $\operatorname{Map}_{\mathbb{D}}:\mathcal{D}^{\operatorname{op}}\times \mathcal{D} \to \mathbb{D}^{\operatorname{op}} \times \mathbb{D} \to \operatorname{Cat}_{\infty}$. With the aid of this new construction, we provide a description of the $\infty$-category of natural trans…
We present a method of constructing monoidal, braided monoidal, and symmetric monoidal bicategories from corresponding types of monoidal double categories that satisfy a lifting condition. Many important monoidal bicategories arise naturally in this way, and applying our general method is much easier than explicitly verifying the coherence laws of a monoidal bicategory for each example. Abstracting from earlier work in this direction, we express the construction as a functor between locally cubical bicategories that preserves monoid objects; this ensures that it also preserves monoidal functor…
In this paper, we give precise mathematical form to the idea of a structure whose data and axioms are faithfully represented by a graphical calculus; some prominent examples are operads, polycategories, properads, and PROPs. Building on the established presentation of such structures as algebras for monads on presheaf categories, we describe a characteristic property of the associated monads---the shapeliness of the title---which says that "any two operations of the same shape agree". An important part of this work is the study of analytic functors between presheaf categories, which are a comm…
This dissertation has two main parts. The first part deals with questions relating to Haghverdi and Scott's notion of partially traced categories. The main result is a representation theorem for such categories: we prove that every partially traced category can be faithfully embedded in a totally traced category. Also conversely, every monoidal subcategory of a totally traced category is partially traced, so this characterizes the partially traced categories completely. The main technique we use is based on Freyd's paracategories, along with a partial version of Joyal, Street, and Verity's Int…
We survey the general theory of groupoids, groupoid actions, groupoid principal bundles, and various kinds of morphisms between groupoids in the framework of categories with pretopology. We study extra assumptions on pretopologies that are needed for this theory. We check these extra assumptions in several categories with pretopologies. Functors between groupoids may be localised at equivalences in two ways. One uses spans of functors, the other bibundles (commuting actions) of groupoids. We show that both approaches give equivalent bicategories. Another type of groupoid morphisms, called acto…
Motivated by topology, we develop a general theory of traces and shadows for an endobicategory, which is a~pair: bicategory $\mathbf{C}$ and endobifunctor $Σ\colon \mathbf C \to\mathbf C$. For a graded linear bicategory and a fixed invertible parameter $q$, we quantize this theory by using the endofunctor $Σ_q$ such that $Σ_q α:=q^{-°α}Σα$ for any 2-morphism $α$ and coincides with $Σ$ otherwise. Applying the quantized trace to the~bicategory of Chen-Khovanov bimodules we get a new triply graded link homology theory called quantum annular link homology. If $q=1$ we reproduce Asaeda-Przytycki-Si…
In some bicategories, the 1-cells are `morphisms' between the 0-cells, such as functors between categories, but in others they are `objects' over the 0-cells, such as bimodules, spans, distributors, or parametrized spectra. Many bicategorical notions do not work well in these cases, because the `morphisms between 0-cells', such as ring homomorphisms, are missing. We can include them by using a pseudo double category, but usually these morphisms also induce base change functors acting on the 1-cells. We avoid complicated coherence problems by describing base change `nonalgebraically', using cat…
We associate, in a functorial way, a monoidal bicategory $\mathsf{Span}| \mathcal V$ to any monoidal bicategory $\mathcal V$. Two examples of this construction are of particular interest: Hopf polyads (due to Bruguières) can be seen as Hopf monads in $\mathsf{Span}| \mathsf{Cat}$ while Hopf group monoids in a braided monoidal category $V$ (in the spirit of Turaev and Zunino), and Hopf categories over $V$ (by Batista, Caenepeel and Vercruysse) both turn out to be Hopf monads in $\mathsf{Span}| V$. Hopf group monoids and Hopf categories are Hopf monads on a distinguished type of monoidales fitti…
We prove that the 2-category Grt of Grothendieck abelian categories with colimit preserving functors and natural transformations is a bicategory of fractions in the sense of Pronk of the 2-category Site of linear sites with continuous morphisms of sites and natural transformations. This result can potentially be used to make the tensor product of Grothendieck categories from earlier work by Lowen, Shoikhet and the author into a bi-monoidal structure on Grt.
This is the second paper in a series. In part I we developed deformation theory of objects in homotopy and derived categories of DG categories. Here we extend these (derived) deformation functors to an appropriate bicategory of artinian DG algebras and prove that these extended functors are pro-representable in a strong sense.
We compare the bicategory of spans with that of bisets (a.k.a. bimodules, distributors, profunctors) in the context of finite groupoids. We construct in particular a well-behaved pseudo-functor from spans to bisets. This yields an application to the axiomatic representation theory of finite groups, namely a new proof and a strengthening of Ganter and Nakaoka's identification of Bouc's category of biset functors as a reflective subcategory of global Mackey functors. To this end, we also prove a tensor-monadicity result for linear functor categories.
We generalize the definition of satellites with respect to presheaves (and copresheaves) with trace in the sense of Inassaridze; a presheaf with trace is replaced by a graph with a pair of diagrams defined on it. We show that the right satellite functor is left adjoint to the left satellite functor, and that a functor having a right (left) adjoint preserves right (left) satellites. In particular cases the construction of satellites is given.
Given Gray-categories $P$ and $L$, there is a Gray-category $\mathrm{Tricat}_{\mathrm{ls}}(P,L)$ of locally strict trihomomorphisms with domain $P$ and codomain $L$, tritransformations, trimodifications, and perturbations. If the domain $P$ is small and the codomain $L$ is cocomplete, we show that this Gray-category is isomorphic as a Gray-category to the Gray-category $\mathrm{Ps}$-$T$-$\mathrm{Alg}$ of pseudo algebras, pseudo functors, transformations, and modifications for a Gray-monad $T$ derived from left Kan extension. Inspired by a similar situation in two-dimensional monad theory, we a…
We use Lurie's symmetric monoidal envelope functor to give two new descriptions of $\infty$-operads: as certain symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories whose underlying symmetric monoidal $\infty$-groupoids are free, and as certain symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories equipped with a symmetric monoidal functor to finite sets (with disjoint union as tensor product). The latter leads to a third description of $\infty$-operads, as a localization of a presheaf $\infty$-category, and we use this to give a simple proof of the equivalence between Lurie's and Barwick's models for $\infty$-operads.
The most natural notion of a simplicial nerve for a (weak) bicategory was given by Duskin, who showed that a simplicial set is isomorphic to the nerve of a $(2,1)$-category (i.e. a bicategory with invertible $2$-morphisms) if and only if it is a quasicategory which has unique fillers for inner horns of dimension $3$ and greater. Using Duskin's technique, we show how his nerve applies to $(2,1)$-category functors, making it a fully faithful inclusion of $(2,1)$-categories into simplicial sets. Then we consider analogues of this extension of Duskin's result for several different two-dimensional …
We provide a complete description of the category of pseudo-categories (including pseudo-functors, natural and pseudo-natural transformations and pseudo modifications). A pseudo-category is a non strict version of an internal category. It was called a weak category and weak double category in some earlier papers. When internal to Cat it is at the same time a generalization of a bicategory and a double category.
We construct a modular functor which takes its values in the monoidal bicategory of finite categories, left exact functors and natural transformations. The modular functor is defined on bordisms that are 2-framed. Accordingly we do not need to require that the finite categories appearing in our construction are semisimple, nor that the finite tensor categories that are assigned to two-dimensional strata are endowed with a pivotal structure. Our prescription can be understood as a state-sum construction. The state-sum variables are assigned to one-dimensional strata and take values in bimodule …
We develop the theory of categories of measurable fields of Hilbert spaces and bounded fields of bounded operators. We examine classes of functors and natural transformations with good measure theoretic properties, providing in the end a rigorous construction for the bicategory used in joint work with Crane as the basis for a representation theory of (Lie) 2-groups. Several important technical results are established along the way: First it is shown that all bounded invertible additive functors (and thus a fortiori all invertible *-functors) between categories of measurable fields of Hilbert s…
In this paper we develop a theory of stability for $G$-categories (presheaf of categories on the orbit category of $G$), where $G$ is a finite group. We give a description of Mackey functors as $G$-commutative monoids exploit it to characterize $G$-spectra as the $G$-stabilization of $G$-spaces. As an application of this we provide an alternative proof of a theorem by Guillou and May. The theory here is developed in the more general setting of orbital categories.
