This paper has two objectives. The first is to develop the theory of bicategories enriched in a monoidal bicategory -- categorifying the classical theory of categories enriched in a monoidal category -- up to a description of the free cocompletion of an enriched bicategory under a class of weighted bicolimits. The second objective is to describe a universal property of the process assigning to a monoidal category V the equipment of V-enriched categories, functors, transformations, and modules; we do so by considering, more generally, the assignation sending an equipment C to the equipment of C-enriched categories, functors, transformations, and modules, and exhibiting this as the free cocompletion of a certain kind of enriched bicategory under a certain class of weighted bicolimits.
In the context of quantaloid-enriched categories, we explain how each saturated class of weights defines, and is defined by, an essentially unique full sub-KZ-doctrine of the free cocompletion KZ-doctrine. The KZ-doctrines which arise as full sub-KZ-doctrines of the free cocompletion, are characterised by two simple "fully faithfulness" conditions. Conical weights form a saturated class, and the corresponding KZ-doctrine is precisely (the generalisation to quantaloid-enriched categories of) the Hausdorff doctrine of [Akhvlediani et al., 2009].
Restriction categories were introduced as a way of generalising the notion of partial map categories. In this paper, we define cocomplete restriction category, and give the free cocompletion of a small restriction category as a suitably defined category of restriction presheaves. We also consider the case where our restriction category is locally small.
We develop a theory of categories which are simultaneously (1) indexed over a base category S with finite products, and (2) enriched over an S-indexed monoidal category V. This includes classical enriched categories, indexed and fibered categories, and internal categories as special cases. We then describe the appropriate notion of "limit" for such enriched indexed categories, and show that they admit "free cocompletions" constructed as usual with a Yoneda embedding.
Just as the presheaf category is the free cocompletion of any small category, there is an analogous notion of free cocompletion for any small restriction category. In this paper, we extend the work on restriction presheaves to presheaves over join restriction categories, and show that the join restriction category of join restriction presheaves is equivalent to some partial map category of sheaves. We then use this to show that the Yoneda embedding exhibits the category of join restriction presheaves as the free cocompletion of any small join restriction category.
Each distributor between categories enriched over a small quantaloid Q gives rise to two adjunctions between the categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves, and hence to two monads. These two adjunctions are respectively generalizations of Isbell adjunctions and Kan extensions in category theory. It is proved that these two processes are functorial with infomorphisms playing as morphisms between distributors; and that the free cocompletion functor of Q-categories factors through both of these functors.
The importance of accessible categories has been widely recognized; they can be described as those freely generated in some precise sense by a small set of objects and, because of that, satisfy many good properties. More specifically finitely accessible categories can be characterized as: (a) free cocompletions of small categories under filtered colimits, and (b) categories of flat presheaves on some small category. The equivalence between (a) and (b) is what makes the theory so general and fruitful. Notions of enriched accessibility have also been considered in the literature for various base…
We define and study the notion of a locally bounded enriched category over a (locally bounded) symmetric monoidal closed category, generalizing the locally bounded ordinary categories of Freyd and Kelly. In addition to proving several general results for constructing examples of locally bounded enriched categories and locally bounded closed categories, we demonstrate that locally bounded enriched categories admit fully enriched analogues of many of the convenient results enjoyed by locally bounded ordinary categories. In particular, we prove full enrichments of Freyd and Kelly's reflectivity a…
Generalising Nachbin's theory of "topology and order", in this paper we continue the study of quantale-enriched categories equipped with a compact Hausdorff topology. We compare these $\mathcal{V}$-categorical compact Hausdorff spaces with ultrafilter-quantale-enriched categories, and show that the presence of a compact Hausdorff topology guarantees Cauchy completeness and (suitably defined) codirected completeness of the underlying quantale enriched category.
We describe a duality for quantale-enriched categories that extends the Lawson duality for continuous dcpos: for any saturated class J of modules that commute with certain weighted limits, and under an appropriate choice of morphisms, the category of J-cocomplete and J-continuous quantale-enriched categories is self-dual.
We define the twisted tensor product of two enriched categories, which generalizes various sorts of `products' of algebraic structures, including the bicrossed product of groups, the twisted tensor product of (co)algebras and the double cross product of bialgebras. The key ingredient in the definition is the notion of simple twisting systems between two enriched categories. To give examples of simple twisted tensor products we introduce matched pairs of enriched categories. Several other examples related to ordinary categories, posets and groupoids are also discussed.
We introduce the notion of an enriched set, as an abstraction of enriched categories, and a category of enriched sets. The set of enriched sets is itself described as a set enriched over the category of enriched sets. We introduce a method for the construction of sets enriched over the set of enriched sets from a given enriched set with some addition data, and for "functors" from such enriched sets as should thereby arise to the enriched set of enriched sets.
In this work, we explore a double categorical framework for categories of enriched graphs, categories and the newly introduced notion of cocategories. A fundamental goal is to establish an enrichment of V-categories in V-cocategories, which generalizes the so-called Sweedler theory relatively to an enrichment of algebras in coalgebras. The language employed is that of V-matrices, and an interplay between the double categorical and bicategorical perspective provides a high-level flexibility for demonstrating essential features of these dual structures. Furthermore, we investigate an enriched fi…
Spurred by the new examples found by Kornel Szlachányi of a form of lax monoidal category, the author felt the time ripe to publish a reworking of Eilenberg-Kelly's original paper on closed categories appropriate to the laxer context. The new examples are connected with bialgebroids. With Stephen Lack, we have also used the concept to give an alternative definition of quantum category and quantum groupoid. Szlachányi has called the lax notion {\em skew monoidal}. This paper defines {\em skew closed category}, proves Yoneda lemmas for categories enriched over such, and looks at closed cocomplet…
We thoroughly treat several familiar and less familiar definitions and results concerning categories, functors and distributors enriched in a base quantaloid Q. In analogy with V-category theory we discuss such things as adjoint functors, (pointwise) left Kan extensions, weighted (co)limits, presheaves and free (co)completion, Cauchy completion and Morita equivalence. With an appendix on the universality of the quantaloid Dist(Q) of Q-enriched categories and distributors.
We construct an exact completion for regular categories enriched in the cartesian closed category $\mathsf{Pos}$ of partially ordered sets and monotone functions by employing a suitable calculus of relations. We then characterize the embedding of any regular category into its completion and use this to obtain examples of concrete categories which arise as such completions. In particular, we prove that the exact completion in this enriched sense of both the categories of Stone and Priestley spaces is the category of compact ordered spaces of L. Nachbin. Finally, we consider the relationship bet…
Our subject is that of categories, functors and distributors enriched in a base quantaloid Q. We show how cocomplete Q-categories are precisely those which are tensored and conically cocomplete, or alternatively, those which are tensored, cotensored and order-cocomplete. Bearing this in mind, we analyze how Sup-valued homomorphisms on Q are related to Q-categories. With an appendix on action, representation and variation.
Cofunctors are a kind of map between categories which lift morphisms along an object assignment. In this paper, we introduce cofunctors between categories enriched in a distributive monoidal category. We define a double category of enriched categories, enriched functors, and enriched cofunctors, whose horizontal and vertical 2-categories have 2-cells given by enriched natural transformations between functors and cofunctors, respectively. Enriched lenses are defined as a compatible enriched functor and enriched cofunctor pair; weighted lenses, which were introduced by Perrone, are precisely len…
We show that induced representations for a pair of $\textit{diffeological Lie groups}$ exist, in the form of an indexed colimit in the category of diffeological spaces.
We introduce the theory of enrichment over an internal monoidal category as a common generalization of both the standard theories of enriched and internal categories. The aim of the paper is to justify and contextualize the new notion by comparing it to other known generalizations of enrichment: namely, those for indexed categories and for generalized multicategories. It turns out that both of these notions are closely related to internal enrichment and, as a corollary, to each other.
We formulate an elementary condition on an involutive quantaloid Q under which there is a distributive law from the Cauchy completion monad over the symmetrisation comonad on the category of Q-enriched categories. For such quantaloids, which we call Cauchy-bilateral quantaloids, it follows that the Cauchy completion of any symmetric Q-enriched category is again symmetric. Examples include Lawvere's quantale of non-negative real numbers and Walters' small quantaloids of closed cribles.
It is shown that, for a small quantaloid Q, the category of small Q-categories and Q-functors is total and cototal, and so is the category of Q-distributors and Q-Chu transforms.
We define the Drinfeld center of a monoidal category enriched over a braided monoidal category, and show that every modular tensor category can be realized in a canonical way as the Drinfeld center of a self-enriched monoidal category. We also give a generalization of this result for important applications in physics.
Our main focus concerns a possible lax version of the algebraic property of protomodularity for Ord-enriched categories. Our motivating example is the category OrdAb of preordered abelian groups; indeed, while abelian groups form a protomodular category, OrdAb does not. Having in mind the role of comma objects in the enriched context, we consider some of the characteristic properties of protomodularity with respect to comma objects instead of pullbacks. We show that the equivalence between protomodularity and certain properties on pullbacks also holds when replacing conveniently pullbacks by c…
In contrast to the fact that every completely distributive lattice is necessarily continuous in the sense of Scott, it is shown that complete distributivity of a category enriched over the closed category obtained by endowing the unit interval with a continuous t-norm does not imply its continuity in general. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the implication are presented.
Exponentiable functors between quantaloid-enriched categories are characterized in elementary terms. The proof goes as follows: the elementary conditions on a given functor translate into existence statements for certain adjoints that obey some lax commutativity; this, in turn, is precisely what is needed to prove the existence of partial products with that functor; so that the functor's exponentiability follows from the works of Niefield [1980] and Dyckhoff and Tholen [1987].
We continue the study of enriched infinity categories, using a definition equivalent to that of Gepner and Haugseng. In our approach enriched infinity categories are associative monoids in an especially designed monoidal category of enriched quivers. We prove that, in case the monoidal structure in the basic category M comes from direct product, our definition is essentially equivalent to the approach via Segal objects. Furthermore, we compare our notion with the notion of category left-tensored over M, and prove a version of Yoneda lemma in this context. Version 2: An error in 2.6.2 corrected…
A new construction to associate an internal category to an enriched one is presented. The key concept is that of extensive ambient category, and the construction follows the one that associates a category whose idempotents split to a given one. The association turns out to be functorial and left adjoint to an already known one when we restrict to a particular class of internal categories whose idempotents split in some canonical way and impose a size restriction.
We provide a definition of enrichment that applies to a wide variety of categorical structures, generalizing Leinster's theory of enriched $T$-multicategories. As a sample of newly enrichable structures, we describe in detail the examples of enriched monoidal categories and enriched double categories, with a focus on monoidal double categories as broadly convenient bases of enrichment.
This paper introduces a skew variant of the notion of enriched category, suitable for enrichment over a skew-monoidal category, the main novelty of which is that the elements of the enriched hom-objects need not be in bijection with the morphisms of the underlying category. This is the natural setting in which to introduce the notion of locally weak comonad, which is fundamental to the theory of enriched algebraic weak factorisation systems. The equivalence, for a monoidal closed category $\mathcal{V}$, between tensored $\mathcal{V}$-categories and hommed $\mathcal{V}$-actegories is extended t…
We define and study opfibrations of $V$-enriched categories when $V$ is an extensive monoidal category whose unit is terminal and connected. This includes sets, simplicial sets, categories, or any locally cartesian closed category with disjoint coproducts and connected unit. We show that for an ordinary category $B$, there is an equivalence of 2-categories between $V$-enriched opfibrations over the free $V$-category on $B$, and pseudofunctors from $B$ to the 2-category of $V$-categories. This generalizes the classical ($Set$-enriched) Grothendieck correspondence.
We prove an adjoint functor theorem in the setting of categories enriched in a monoidal model category $\mathcal V$ admitting certain limits. When $\mathcal V$ is equipped with the trivial model structure this recaptures the enriched version of Freyd's adjoint functor theorem. For non-trivial model structures, we obtain new adjoint functor theorems of a homotopical flavour - in particular, when $\mathcal V$ is the category of simplical sets we obtain a homotopical adjoint functor theorem appropriate to the $\infty$-cosmoi of Riehl and Verity. We also investigate accessibility in the enriched s…
This paper focus on the presheaf monad and its submonads on the realm of $V$-categories, for a quantale $V$. First we present two characterisations of presheaf submonads, both using $V$-distributors: one based on admissible classes of $V$-distributors, and other using Beck-Chevalley conditions on $V$-distributors. Then we focus on the study of the corresponding Eilenberg-Moore categories of algebras, having as main examples the formal ball monad and the so-called Lawvere monad.
$R\text{-}\mathrm{Mod}$-enriched categories are left $\underline{R}$-module objects of $Cat(\mathbb{A}\mathrm{b})$ and $Cat(\mathbb{A}\mathrm{b})$-enriched functors
In this paper we unify previous developments on higher operads and multitensors into a single framework in which the interplay between multitensors on a category V, and monads on the category of graphs enriched in V, is taken as fundamental. The material presented here is the conceptual background for subsequent work in which the Gray tensor product of 2-categories and the Crans tensor product of Gray categories are exhibited as existing within our framework, and in an explicit construction of the funny tensor product of categories is generalised to a large class of Batanin operads.
In this work we discuss a new type of factorisation systems for \textbf{Ord}-enriched categories. We start by defining the new notion of lax weak orthogonality, which involves the existence of lax diagonal morphisms for lax squares. Using the usual theory of factorisation systems as a blueprint, we introduce a lax version of weak and functorial factorisation systems. We provide a characterisation of lax functorial weak factorisation systems, namely lax weak factorisation systems such that their factorisations are lax functorial. Then, we present a particular case of such lax functorial weak fa…
The paper is in essence a survey of categories having $ϕ$-weighted colimits for all the weights $ϕ$ in some class $Φ$. We introduce the class $Φ^+$ of {\em $Φ$-flat} weights which are those $ψ$ for which $ψ$-colimits commute in the base $\V$ with limits having weights in $Φ$; and the class $Φ^-$ of {\em $Φ$-atomic} weights, which are those $ψ$ for which $ψ$-limits commute in the base $\V$ with colimits having weights in $Φ$. We show that both these classes are {\em saturated} (that is, what was called {\em closed} in the terminology of \cite{AK88}). We prove that for the class $\p$ of {\em all…
We offer two proofs that categories weakly enriched over symmetric monoidal categories can be strictified to categories enriched in permutative categories. This is a "many 0-cells" version of the strictification of bimonoidal categories to strict ones.
This dissertation is devoted to a study of adjunctions concerning categories enriched over a quantaloid Q (or Q-categories for short), with the following types of adjunctions involved: (1) adjoint functors between Q-categories; (2) adjoint distributors between Q-categories; (3) adjoint functors between categories consisting of Q-categories. For a small quantaloid Q and a distributor between Q-categories, two adjunctions between the Q-categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves are presented. These adjunctions respectively extend the fundamental construction of Isbell adjunctions and K…
