Three inverse boundary value problems for the heat equations in one space dimension are considered. Those three problems are: extracting an unknown interface in a heat conductive material, an unknown boundary in a layered material or a material with a smooth heat conductivity by employing a single set of the temperature and heat flux on a known boundary as the observation data. Some extraction formulae of those discontinuities which suggest a relationship between the travel time of a {\it virtual} signal and the observation data are given by applying the enclosure method to the problems.
The extraction problem of information about the location and shape of the cavity from a single set of the temperature and heat flux on the boundary of the conductor and finite time interval is a typical and important inverse problem. Its one space dimensional version is considered. It is shown that the enclosure method developed by the author for elliptic equations yields the extraction formula of a quantity which can be interpreted as the {\it travel time} of a {\it virtual} signal with an arbitrary fixed propagation speed that starts at the known boundary and the initial time, reflects at an…
We study the influence of the intrinsic curvature on the large time behaviour of the heat equation in a tubular neighbourhood of an unbounded geodesic in a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold. Since we consider killing boundary conditions, there is always an exponential-type decay for the heat semigroup. We show that this exponential-type decay is slower for positively curved manifolds comparing to the flat case. As the main result, we establish a sharp extra polynomial-type decay for the heat semigroup on negatively curved manifolds comparing to the flat case. The proof employs the existence …
To obtain new types of exact travelling wave solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations, a number of approximate methods are known in the literature. In this study, we extend the class of auxiliary equations of Fibonnacci&Lucas type equations. The proposed Fibonnacci&Lucas approximation method produces many new solutions. Consequently, we introduce new exact travelling wave solutions of some physical systems in terms of these new solutions of the Fibonacci&Lucas type equation. In addition to using different ansatz, we use determine different balancing principle to obtain optimal sol…
This paper is devoted to the analysis of qualitative properties of flux-saturated type operators in dimension one. Specifically, we study regularity properties and smoothing effects, discontinuous interfaces, the existence of traveling wave profiles, sub- and super-solutions and waiting time features. The aim of the paper is to better understand these kind of phenomena throughout two prototypic operators: The relativistic heat equation and the porous media flux-limited equation. As an important consequence of our results we deduce that solutions to the one-dimensional relativistic heat equatio…
We use the vorticity transportation equation as the start point--with the help of stream function for two-dimensional planar incompressible flows--to obtain exact solutions that characterize evolution and dynamics of the flows. These traveling wave solutions, including both continuous and solitary waves, also recover the results existing in the theory of potential flows. We further analyze the flow patterns regarding symmetry solutions generated by Lie transformation groups. Some of the symmetry solutions have not been discussed in the current literature. They could display flow patterns very …
We demonstrate that the Novikov.Veselov equation (a (2+1)-dimensional analog of KdV) at zero energy does not possess solitons with the space localization stronger than O(|x|^{-4}).
In this paper, we prove the nonlinear orbital stability of the stationary traveling wave of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation by using Zakharov-Shabat's inverse scattering method.
A key feature of $(1+1)$-dimensional nonlinear wave equations is that they admit left or right traveling waves, under appropriate algebraic conditions on the nonlinearities. In this paper, we prove global stability of such traveling wave solutions for $(1+1)$-dimensional systems of nonlinear wave equations, given a certain asymptotic null condition and sufficient decay for the traveling wave. We first consider semilinear systems as a simpler model problem; we then proceed to treat more general quasilinear systems.
We provide a rigorous mathematical derivation of the convergence in the long-wave transonic limit of the minimizing travelling waves for the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation towards ground states for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation (KP I).
The "nonlinear complex heat equation" $A_t=i|A|^2A+A_{xx}$ was introduced by P. Coullet and L. Kramer as a model equation exhibiting travelling fronts induced by non-variational effects, called "retracting fronts". In this paper we study the existence of such fronts. They go by one-parameter families, bounded at one end by the slowest and "steepest" front among the family, a situation presenting striking analogies with front propagation into unstable states.
We consider solutions of a scalar reaction-diffusion equation of the ignition type with a random, stationary and ergodic reaction rate. We show that solutions of the Cauchy problem spread with a deterministic rate in the long time limit. We also establish existence of generalized random traveling waves and of transition fronts in general heterogeneous media.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of a traveling front and of its speed for the homogeneous heat equation in the half-plane with a Neumann boundary reaction term of non-balanced bistable type or of combustion type. We also establish the monotonicity of the front and, in the bistable case, its behavior at infinity. In contrast with the classical bistable interior reaction model, its behavior at the side of the invading state is of power type, while at the side of the invaded state its decay is exponential. These decay results rely on the construction of a family of explicit bistable traveli…
The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation possesses a four-parameter family of one-dimensional periodic traveling waves. We study the spectral stability of the waves with small amplitude with respect to two-dimensional perturbations which are either periodic in the direction of propagation, with the same period as the one-dimensional traveling wave, or non-periodic (localized or bounded). We focus on the so-called KP-I equation (positive dispersion case), for which we show that these periodic waves are unstable with respect to both types of perturbations. Finally, we briefly discuss the KP-II e…
We consider in this paper a reaction-diffusion system under a KPP hypothesis in a cylindrical domain in the presence of a shear flow. Such systems arise in predator-prey models as well as in combustion models with heat losses. Similarly to the single equation case, the existence of a minimal speed c* and of traveling front solutions for every speed c > c* has been shown both in the cases of heat losses distributed inside the domain or on the boundary. Here, we deal with the accordance between the two models by choosing heat losses inside the domain which tend to a Dirac mass located on the bou…
We study the existence and nonexistence of traveling waves of general diffusive Kermack-McKendrick SIR models with standard incidence where the total population is not constant. The three classes, susceptible $S$, infected $I$ and removed $R$, are all involved in the traveling wave solutions. We show that the minimum speed for the existence of traveling waves for this three-dimensional non-monotonic system can be derived from its linearizaion at the initial disease-free equilibrium. The proof in this paper is based on Schauder fixed point theorem and Laplace transform and provides a promising …
A simplified model of the tumor angiogenesis can be described by a Keller-Segel equation \cite{FrTe,Le,Pe}. The stability of traveling waves for the one dimensional system has recently been known by \cite{JinLiWa,LiWa}. In this paper we consider the equation on the two dimensional domain $ (x, y) \in \mathbf R \times {\mathbf S^λ}$ for a small parameter $λ>0$ where $ \mathbf S^λ$ is the circle of perimeter $λ$. Then the equation allows a planar traveling wave solution of invading types. We establish the nonlinear stability of the traveling wave solution if the initial perturbation is sufficien…
We construct a smooth branch of travelling wave solutions for the 2 dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equations for small speed. These travelling waves exhibit two vortices far away from each other. We also compute the leading order term of the derivatives with respect to the speed. We construct these solutions by an implicit function type argument.
We generalize work of Oh & Zumbrun and Serre on spectral stability of spatially periodic traveling waves of systems of viscous conservation laws from the one-dimensional to the multi-dimensional setting. Specifically, we extend to multi-dimensions the connection observed by Serre between the linearized dispersion relation near zero frequency of the linearized equations about the wave and the homogenized system obtained by slow modulation (WKB) approximation. This may be regarded as partial justification of the WKB expansion; an immediate consequence is that hyperbolicity of the multi-dimension…
We prove the convergence in the transonic limit of two-dimensional traveling waves of the E-K system, up to rescaling, toward a ground state of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Equation. Similarly, in dimension one we prove the convergence in the transonic limit of solitons toward the soliton of the Korteweg de Vries equation.
Choosing $κ$ (horizontal ordinate of the saddle point associated to the homoclinic orbit) as bifurcation parameter, bifurcations of the travelling wave solutions is studied in a perturbed $(1 + 1)$-dimensional dispersive long wave equation. The solitary wave solution exists at a suitable wave speed $c$ for the bifurcation parameter $κ\in (0,1-\frac{\sqrt3}{3})\cup (1+\frac{\sqrt3}{3},2)$, while the kink and anti-kink wave solutions exist at a unique wave speed $c^*=\sqrt{15}/3$ for $κ=0$ or $κ=2$. The methods are based on the geometric singular perturbation (GSP, for short) approach, Melnikov …
We investigate a model of solid propellant combustion involving surface pyrolysis coupled to finite activation energy gas phase combustion. Existence and uniqueness of a travelling wave solution are established by extending dynamical system tools classically used for premixed flames, dealing with the additional difficulty arising from the surface regression and pyrolysis. An efficient shooting method allows to solve the problem in phase space without resorting to space discretisation nor fixed-point Newton iterations. The results are compared to solutions from a CFD code developed at ONERA, as…
We study the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in dimension two with periodic conditions in one direction, or equivalently on the product space $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}_L$ where $L > 0$ and $\mathbb{T}_L = \mathbb{R} / L \mathbb{Z}.$ We focus on the variational problem consisting in minimizing the Ginzburg-Landau energy under a fixed momentum constraint. We prove that there exists a threshold value for $L$ below which minimizers are the one-dimensional dark solitons, and above which no minimizer can be one-dimensional.
We consider the incompressible two-dimensional Euler equation in the plane in the case when its initial vorticity is the characteristic function of a bounded open set. We show that the travel distance grows linearly for most of fluid particles initially placed on the set when the area of the symmetric difference between the set and a disk is small enough.
We study the transverse dynamics of two-dimensional traveling periodic waves for the gravity--capillary water-wave problem. The governing equations are the Euler equations for the irrotational flow of an inviscid fluid layer with free surface under the forces of gravity and surface tension. We focus on two open sets of dimensionless parameters $(α,β)$, where $α$ and $β$ are the inverse square of the Froude number and the Weber number, respectively. For each arbitrary but fixed pair $(α,β)$ in one of these sets, two-dimensional traveling periodic waves bifurcate from the trivial constant flow. …
We consider doubly-periodic travelling waves at the surface of an infinitely deep perfect fluid, only subjected to gravity $g$ and resulting from the nonlinear interaction of two simply periodic travelling waves making an angle $2θ$ between them. \newline Denoting by $μ=gL/c^{2}$ the dimensionless bifurcation parameter ($L$ is the wave length along the direction of the travelling wave and $c$ is the velocity of the wave), bifurcation occurs for $μ=\cos θ$. For non-resonant cases, we first give a large family of formal three-dimensional gravity travelling waves, in the form of an expansion in p…
In the previous paper, we constructed a smooth branch of travelling waves for the 2 dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Here, we continue the study of this branch. We show some coercivity results, and we deduce from them the kernel of the linearized operator, a spectral stability result, as well as a uniqueness result in the energy space. In particular, our result proves the non degeneracy of these travelling waves, which is a key step in the classification of these waves and for the construction of multi-travelling waves.
This paper establishes suficient conditions for the orbital stability of one-parameter spatially periodic traveling-wave solutions for one-dimensional dispersive equations. Our method of proof combines known techniques with some new ideas. As a consequence of our result, we give several applications for well known dispersive equations. Extension of the theory to regularized equations is also established.
We consider the Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equation in the whole space. We prove that if a solution has, to main order and for all times (positive and negative), the same exponential decay as a planar traveling wave with speed larger than the minimal one at its leading edge, then it has to coincide with the aforementioned traveling wave.
While there is a long history of employing moving boundary problems in physics, in particular via Stefan problems for heat conduction accompanied by a change of phase, more recently such approaches have been adapted to study biological invasion. For example, when a logistic growth term is added to the governing partial differential equation in a Stefan problem, one arrives at the Fisher-Stefan model, a generalisation of the well-known Fisher-KPP model, characterised by a leakage coefficient $κ$ which relates the speed of the moving boundary to the flux of population there. This Fisher-Stefan m…
There is a few results about the global stability of nontrivial solutions to quasilinear wave equations. In this paper we are concerned with the uniqueness and stability of traveling waves to the time-like extremal hypersurface in Minkowski space. Firstly, we can get the existence and uniqueness of traveling wave solutions to the time-like extremal hypersurface in R1+(n+1), which can be considered as the generalized Bernstein theorem in Minkowski space. Furthermore, we also get the stability of traveling wave solutions with speed of light to time-like extremal hypersurface in 1 + (2 + 1) dimen…
In this paper, we study desingularization of vortices for the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations in the full plane. We construct a family of steady vortex pairs for the Euler equations with a general vorticity function, which constitutes a desingularization of a pair of point vortices with equal magnitude and opposite signs. The results are obtained by using an improved vorticity method.
Constrained gradient flows are studied in fracture mechanics to describe strongly irreversible (or unidirectional) evolution of cracks. The present paper is devoted to a study on the long-time behavior of non-compact orbits of such constrained gradient flows. More precisely, traveling wave dynamics for a one-dimensional fully nonlinear Allen-Cahn type equation involving the positive-part function is considered. Main results of the paper consist of a construction of a one-parameter family of degenerate traveling wave solutions (even identified when coinciding up to translation) and exponential …
In this paper we present a rigorous modulational stability theory for periodic traveling wave solutions to equations of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) type. We first argue that, for Hamiltonian dispersive equations with a non-singular symplectic form and $d$ conserved quantities (in addition to the Hamiltonian), one expects that generically ${\mathcal L}$, the linearization around a periodic traveling wave, will have a $2d$ dimensional generalized kernel, with a particular Jordan structure: The kernel of ${\mathcal L}$ is expected to be $d$ dimensional, the first generalized kernel is expected to…
We consider a one-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation coupled to a conservation law, where both equations contain additional dispersive terms breaking the reflection symmetry $x \mapsto -x$. This system exhibits a Turing instability and we study the dynamics close to the onset of this instability. First, we show that periodic traveling waves bifurcate from a homogeneous ground state. Second, fixing the bifurcation parameter close to the onset of instability, we construct modulating traveling fronts, which capture the process of pattern-formation by modeling the transition from the homogeneous…
