In this short note we introduce the Belyi degree of a number field K, which is the smallest degree of a dessin d'enfant having K as field of moduli. After the description of some general properties (for example, the fact that there exist finitely many number fields of bounded Belyi degree), we give a lower and an upper bound for such an invariant. We finally give some explicit examples for quadratic fields.
Belyi's theorem asserts that a smooth projective curve $X$ defined over a number field can be realized as a cover of the projective line unramified outside three points. In this short paper we investigate the bejaviour of the minimal degree of such a cover. More precisely, we start by defining the absolute Belyi degree of X, which only depends on the $\bar{\bold Q}$-isomorphism class of $X$. We then give a lower bound of this invariant, only depending on the stable primes of bad reduction (as defined in the paper) and we show that this bound is sharp. In the second part of the paper, we introd…
We give an elementary, self-contained and quick proof of Belyi's theorem. As a by-product of our proof we obtain an explicit bound for the degree of the defining number field of a Belyi surface.
Belyi's Theorem states that a Riemann surface, X, as an algebraic curve is defined over an algebraic closure of the rationals if and only if there exists a holomorphic function taking X to the Riemann sphere with at most three critical values (traditionally taken to be zero, one, and infinity). By restricting to the case where X is the Riemann sphere and our holomorphic functions are Belyi polynomials, we define a Belyi height of an algebraic number to be the minimal degree of Belyi polynomials mapping said algebraic number to either zero or one. We prove, for non-zero algebraic numbers with n…
Riemann's Existence Theorem gives the following bijections: (1) Isomorphism classes of Belyi maps of degree $d$. (2) Equivalence classes of generating systems of degree $d$. (3) Isomorphism classes of dessins d'enfants with $d$ edges. In previous work, the first author and collaborators exploited the correspondence between Belyi maps and their generating systems to provide explicit equations for two infinite families of dynamical Belyi maps. We complete this picture by describing the dessins d'enfants for these two families.
We present a genus 0 Belyi map for the sporadic Janko group J2 of degree 280. As a consequence we obtain a polynomial having Aut(J2) as a Galois group over K(t) where K is a number field of degree 10.
We study the Betti map of a particular (but relevant) section of the family of Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves using the polynomial Pell equation $A^2-DB^2=1$, with $A,B,D\in \mathbb C[t]$ and certain ramified covers ${\mathbb P}^1\to {\mathbb P}^1$ arising from such equation and having heavy constrains on their ramification. In particular, we obtain a special case of a result of André, Covaja and Zannier on the submersivity of the Betti map by studying the locus of the polynomials $D$ that fit in a Pell equation inside the space of polynomials of fixed even degree. Moreover, Riemann Existen…
We consider a large family of dynamical Belyi maps of arbitrary degree and study the arithmetic monodromy groups attached to the iterates of such maps. Building on the results of Bouw-Ejder-Karemaker on the geometric monodromy groups of these maps, we show that the quotient of the arithmetic monodromy group by the geometric monodromy group has order either $1$ or $2$. Prior to this article, a result of this kind was only known for quadratic maps (Pink) and a few examples in degree $3$.
We compute the genus 0 Belyi map for the sporadic Janko group J1 of degree 266 and describe the applied method. This yields explicit polynomials having J1 as a Galois group over K(t), [K:Q] = 7.
In this note we consider questions about parametrisations of elliptic curves defined over number fields by quotients of the upper half-plane by finite index subgroups of SL_2(Z). We ask if we can choose such a parametrisation of an elliptic curve to reflect the field over which it is defined: this can be viewed as a generalisation of the Shimura-Taniyama-Weil conjecture.
We study geometry of the ring of integers $O_K$ of a number field $K$. Namely, it is proved that the inclusion $\mathbf{Z}\subset O_K$ defines a covering of the Riemann sphere $\mathbf{C}P^1$ ramified over the points $\{0,1,\infty\}$. Our approach is based on the notion of a Serre $C^*$-algebra. As an application, a new proof of the Belyi Theorem is given.
Let $p$ be a prime and $K$ a number field of degree $p$. We count the number of elliptic curves, up to $\bar{K}$-isomorphism, having a prescribed property, where this property is either that the curve contains a fixed torsion group as a subgroup, or that it has an isogeny of prescribed degree.
For a prime number p, we characterize the groups that may arise as torsion subgroups of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication defined over a number field of degree 2p. In particular, our work shows that a classification in the strongest sense is tied to determining whether there exist infinitely many Sophie Germain primes.
This article extends Bayer-Fluckiger's theorem on characteristic polynomials of isometries on an even unimodular lattice to the case where the isometries have determinant $-1$. As an application, we show that the logarithm of every Salem number of degree $20$ is realized as the topological entropy of an automorphism of a nonprojective K3 surface.
Let X be a projective scheme over a finite field. In this paper, we consider the asymptotic behavior of the number of effective cycles on X with bounded degree as it goes to the infinity. By this estimate, we can define a certain kind of zeta functions associated with groups of cycles. We also consider an analogue in Arakelov geometry.
We show that correlators of the hermitian one-Matrix model with a general potential can be mapped to the counting of certain triples of permutations and hence to counting of holomorphic maps from world-sheet to sphere target with three branch points on the target. This allows the use of old matrix model results to derive new explicit formulae for a class of Hurwitz numbers. Holomorphic maps with three branch points are related, by Belyi's theorem, to curves and maps defined over algebraic numbers $\bmQ$. This shows that the string theory dual of the one-matrix model at generic couplings has wo…
We determine the set $S(d)$ of possible prime orders of $K$-rational points on elliptic curves over number fields $K$ of degree $d$, for $d = 4$, $5$, $6$, and $7$.
We give an asymptotic expansion for the density of del Pezzo surfaces of degree four in a certain Birch Swinnerton-Dyer family violating the Hasse principle due to a Brauer-Manin obstruction. Under the assumption of Schinzel's hypothesis and the finiteness of Tate-Shafarevich groups for elliptic curves, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of all del Pezzo surfaces in the family, which violate the Hasse principle.
Let $G$ be a linear algebraic group over a field $k$ of characteristic 0. We show that any two connected semisimple $k$-subgroups of $G$ that are conjugate over an algebraic closure of $k$ are actually conjugate over a finite field extension of $k$ of degree bounded independently of the subgroups. Moreover, if $k$ is a real number field, we show that any two connected semisimple $k$-subgroups of $G$ that are conjugate over the field of real numbers $\mathbb{R}$ are actually conjugate over a finite real extension of $k$ of degree bounded independently of the subgroups.
Let $b$ be a numeration base. A $b$-Niven number is one that is divisible by the sum of its base $b$ digits. We introduce high degree $b$-Niven numbers. These are $b$-Niven numbers that have a power greater than $1$ that is $b$-Niven number. Our main result shows that for each degree there exists an infinite set of bases $b$ for which $b$-Niven numbers of that degree exist. The high degree $b$-Niven numbers are given by explicit formulas and have all digits different from zero.
Given a number field $L$, we define the degree of an algebraic number $v \in L$ with respect to a choice of a primitive element of $L$. We propose the question of computing the minimal degrees of algebraic numbers in $L$, and examine these values in degree $4$ Galois extensions over $\mathbb{Q}$ and triquadratic number fields. We show that computing minimal degrees of non-rational elements in triquadratic number fields is closely related to solving classical Diophantine problems such as congruent number problem as well as understanding various arithmetic properties of elliptic curves.
We give an upper bound on the number of extensions of a fixed number field of prescribed degree and discriminant less than X; these bounds improve on work of Schmidt. We also prove various related results, such as lower bounds for the number of extensions and upper bounds for Galois extensions.
In this paper we investigate the distribution of the number of primes which ramify in number fields of degree d <= 5. In analogy with the classical Erdos-Kac theorem, we prove for S_d-extensions that the number of such primes is normally distributed with mean and variance log log X.
If a number field has a large degree and discriminant, the computation of the class number becomes quite difficult, especially without the assumption of GRH. In this article, we will unconditionally show that a certain nonabelian number field of degree 120 has class number one. This field is the unique $A_5 \times C_2$ extension of the rationals that is ramified only at 653 with ramification index 2. It is the largest degree number field unconditionally proven to have class number 1. The proof uses the algorithm of Guàrdia, Montes and Nart to calculate an integral basis and then finds integral…
Let $N_n(X)$ denote the number of degree $n$ number fields with discriminant bounded by $X$. In this note, we improve the best known upper bounds on $N_n(X)$, finding that $N_n(X) = O(X^{ c (\log n)^2})$ for an explicit constant $c$.
This paper is an extension of the work of Dummit and Voight on modeling the 2-Selmer group of number fields. We extend their model to $S_n$-number fields of even degree and develop heuristics on the difference in the 2-ranks between the class group and narrow class group.
We prove an improvement on Schmidt's upper bound on the number of number fields of degree $n$ and absolute discriminant less than X for $6 \leq n \leq 94$. We carry this out by improving and applying a uniform bound on the number of monic integer polynomials, having bounded height and discriminant divisible by a large square, that we proved in a previous work.
For $β> 1$, a sequence $(c_n)_{n \geq 1} \in \mathbb{Z}^{\mathbb{N}^+}$ with $0 \leq c_n < β$ is the \emph{beta expansion} of $x$ with respect to $β$ if $x = \sum_{n = 1}^\infty c_nβ^{-n}$. Defining $d_β(x)$ to be the greedy beta expansion of $x$ with respect to $β$, it is known that $d_β(1)$ is eventually periodic as long as $β$ is a Pisot number. It is conjectured that the same is true for Salem numbers, but is only currently known to be true for Salem numbers of degree 4. Heuristic arguments suggest that almost all degree 6 Salem numbers admit periodic expansions but that a positive proport…
The height of an algebraic number $α$ is a measure of how arithmetically complicated $α$ is. We say $α$ is totally $p$-adic if the minimal polynomial of $α$ splits completely over the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers. In this paper, we investigate what can be said about the smallest nonzero height of a degree $3$ totally $p$-adic number. In particular, we provide an algorithm to determine, given a prime $p$, the smallest height of a degree $3$ totally $p$-adic number.
We establish asymptotic upper bounds on the number of zeros modulo $p$ of certain polynomials with integer coefficients, with $p$ prime numbers arbitrarily large. The polynomials we consider have degree of size $p$ and are obtained by truncating certain power series with rational coefficients that satisfy simple differential equations.
For an abelian number field of odd degree, we study the structure of its 2-Selmer group as a bilinear space and as a Galois module. We prove structural results and make predictions for the distribution of unit signature ranks and narrow class groups in families where the degree and Galois group are fixed.
In this paper, we present several methods for construction of elliptic curves with large torsion group and positive rank over number fields of small degree. We also discuss potential applications of such curves in the elliptic curve factorization method (ECM).
We discuss several enumerative results for irreducible polynomials of a given degree and pairs of relatively prime polynomials of given degrees in several variables over finite fields. Two notions of degree, the {\em total degree} and the {\em vector degree}, are considered. We show that the number of irreducibles can be computed recursively by degree and that the number of relatively prime pairs can be expressed in terms of the number of irreducibles. We also obtain asymptotic formulas for the number of irreducibles and the number of relatively prime pairs. The asymptotic formulas for the num…
Let $s \geq 3$ be a fixed positive integer and $a_1,\dots,a_s \in \mathbb{Z}$ be arbitrary. We show that, on average over $k$, the density of numbers represented by the degree $k$ diagonal form \[ a_1 x_1^k + \cdots + a_s x_s^k \] decays rapidly with respect to $k$.
We present a method for computing complete lists of number fields in cases where the Galois group, as an abstract group, appears as a Galois group in smaller degree. We apply this method to find the twenty-five octic fields with Galois group $\textrm{PSL}_2(7)$ and smallest absolute discriminant. We carry out a number of related computations, including determining the octic field with Galois group $2^3{:}\textrm{GL}_3(2)$ of smallest absolute discriminant.
In 2016 Astudillo, Diaz y Diaz and Friedman published sharp lower bounds for regulators of number fields of all signatures up to degree seven, except for fields of degree seven having five real places. We deal with this signature, proving that the field with the first discriminant has minimal regulator. The new element in the proof is an extension of Pohst's geometric method from the totally real case to fields having one complex place.
Let $f(x)$ be an irreducible polynomial with integer coefficients of degree at least two. Hooley proved that the roots of the congruence equation $f(x)\equiv 0\mod n$ is uniformly distributed. as a parallel of Hooley's theorem under ideal theoretical setting, we prove the uniformity of the distribution of residues of an algebraic number modulo degree one ideals. Then using this result we show that the roots of a system of polynomial congruences are uniformly distributed. Finally, the distribution of digits of n-adic expansions of an algebraic number is discussed.
In 1801, Gauss proved that there were infinitely many quadratic fields with odd class number. We generalise this result by showing that there are infinitely many $S_n$-fields of any given even degree and signature that have odd class number. Also, we prove that there are infinitely many fields of any even degree at least $4$ and with at least one real embedding that have units of every signature. To do so, we bound the average number of $2$-torsion elements in the class group, narrow class group, and oriented class group of monogenised fields of even degree (and compute these averages precisel…
Let $\ell \ne 3$ be a prime. We show that there are only finitely many cyclic number fields $F$ of degree $\ell$ for which the unit equation $$λ+ μ= 1, \qquad λ,~μ\in \mathcal{O}_F^\times$$ has solutions. Our result is effective. For example, we deduce that the only cyclic quintic number field for which the unit equation has solutions is $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_{11})^+$.
By reformulating and extending results of Elkies, we prove some results on $\mathbb Q$-curves over number fields of odd degree. We show that, over such fields, the only prime isogeny degrees~$\ell$ which an elliptic curve without CM may have are those degrees which are already possible over~$\mathbb Q$ itself (in particular, $\ell\le37$), and we show the existence of a bound on the degrees of cyclic isogenies between $\mathbb Q$-curves depending only on the degree of the field. We also prove that the only possible torsion groups of $\mathbb Q$-curves over number fields of degree not divisible …
We present a general result of simultaneous approximation to several transcendental real, complex or p-adic numbers xi_1,...,xi_t by conjugate algebraic numbers of bounded degree over Q, provided that the given transcendental numbers xi_1,...,xi_t generate over Q a field of transcendence degree one. We provide sharper estimates for example when xi_1,...,xi_t form an arithmetic progression with non-zero algebraic difference, or a geometric progression with non-zero algebraic ratio different from a root of unity. In this case, we also obtain by duality a version of Gel'fond's transcendence crite…
It was shown by M. Bhargava and P. Harron that for $n=3,4,5$, the shapes of rings of integers of $S_n$-number fields of degree $n$ become equidistributed in the space of shapes when the fields are ordered by discriminant. Instead of shapes, we correspond grids to each number field, which preserve more of the number fields' data. The space of grids is a fiber bundle over the space of shapes. We strengthen Bhargava-Harron's result by proving that the grids of rings of integers of $S_n$-number fields become equidistributed in the space of grids.
For $p$ prime and $\ell = \frac{p-1}{2}$, we show that the shapes of pure prime degree number fields lie on one of two $\ell$-dimensional subspaces of the space of shapes, and which of the two subspaces is dictated by whether or not $p$ ramifies wildly. When the fields are ordered by absolute discriminant we show that the shapes are equidistributed, in a regularized sense, on these subspaces. We also show that the shape is a complete invariant within the family of pure prime degree fields. This extends the results of Harron, in [Har17], who studied shapes in the case of pure cubic number field…
We give an explicit upper bound for the number of equivalence classes of binary forms with rational integral coefficients of given degree and given discriminant, and with given splitting field. Further, we give an explicit upper bound for the number of irreducible binary forms with rational integral coefficients with given invariant order. Our bounds depend on as few parameters as possible. For instance, we show that the number of equivalence classes of irreducible binary forms with rational integral coefficients of degree r with given invariant order has an upper bound depending only on r. We…
We establish a criterion for a complex number to be algebraic over Q of degree at most two. It requires that, for any sufficiently large real number X, there exists a non-zero polynomial with integral coefficients, of degree at most two and height at most X, whose absolute value at that complex number is at most (1/4)X^{-(3+sqrt{5})/2}. We show that the exponent (3+sqrt{5})/2 in this condition is optimal, and deduce from this criterion a result of simultaneous approximation of a real number by conjugate algebraic numbers.
Let $K$ be a number field and $r$ an integer. Given an elliptic curve $E$, defined over $K$, we consider the problem of counting the number of degree two prime ideals of $K$ with trace of Frobenius equal to $r$. Under certain restrictions on $K$, we show that "on average" the number of such prime ideals with norm less than or equal to $x$ satisfies an asymptotic identity that is in accordance with standard heuristics. This work is related to the classical Lang-Trotter conjecture and extends the work of several authors.
In this paper we study a class of dynamical systems generated by iterations of multivariate polynomials and estimate the degreegrowth of these iterations. We use these estimates to bound exponential sums along the orbits of these dynamical systems and show that they admit much stronger estimates than in the general case and thus can be of use for pseudorandom number generation.
