This is a continuation of math.AG/0408274, where we have described the relative movable cone for a Springer resolution of the closure of a nilpotent orbit in a complex simple Lie algebra. But, in general, the movable cone does not coincide with the whole space of numerical classes of divisors on the Springer resolution.
The purpose of this paper is, to describe the remainder. We shall first construct a deformation of the nilpotent orbit closure in a canonical manner according to Brieskorn and Slodowy, and next describe all its crepant simultaneous resolutions. This construction enables us to divide the whole space into a finite number of chambers.
Moreover, by using this construction, one can generalize the main result of math.AG/0408274 to arbitrary Richardson orbits whose Springer maps have degree > 1. New Mukai flops, different from those of type A,D,E_6, will appear in the birational geometry for such orbits.
We call a group $G$ nilpotently Jordan of class at most $c$ $(c\in\mathbb{N})$ if there exists a constant $J\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ such that every finite subgroup $H\leqq G$ contains a nilpotent subgroup $K\leqq H$ of class at most $c$ and index at most $J$. We show that the birational automorphism group of a $d$ dimensional variety over a field of characteristic zero is nilpotently Jordan of class at most $d$.
We show that the birational automorphism group of a variety over a field of characteristic zero is nilpotently Jordan of class at most two.
This is a survey article prepared for the submission to "Handbook of moduli". The following topics are discussed: (i) Basic facts and examples of resolutions for nilpotent orbit (ii) Q-factorial terminalizations of nilpotent orbit closures and related birational geometry (iii) Poisson deformations of nilpotent orbit closures.
We study mirror symmetry of complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds which have birational automorphisms of infinite order. We observe that movable cones in birational geometry are transformed, under mirror symmetry, to the monodromy nilpotent cones which are naturally glued together.
In this paper we shall study symplectic resolutions of a nilpotent orbit closure of a complex simple Lie algebra \g. We shall introduce an equivalence relation in the set of parabolic subgroups of $G$ in terms of marked Dynkin diagrams. We start with a nilpotent orbit closure which admits a Springer resolution with a parabolic subgroup $P_0$ of $G$. Then we prove that all symplectic resolution of the nilpotent closure are Springer resolutions with $P$ which are equivalent to $P_0$. Here all symplectic resolutions are connected by Mukai flops. We need three types of Mukai flops (types A, D and …
A nilpotent orbit $O$ of a complex semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ has finite fundamental group. Associated with an etale cover of $O$, we have a finite cover of the closure $\bar{O}$ of $O$. In this article we consider the finite cover X associated with the universal cover of a nilpotent orbit $O$ of a classical simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We construct explicitly a Q-factorial terminalization of X in a group theoretic way.
In this paper, we shall prove that any two (projective) symplectic resolutions of a nilpotent orbit closure in a classical simple Lie algebra are connected by a finite sequence of diagrams which are locally trivial families of Mukai flops of type A or of type D. A Mukai flop of type A is the same as a stratified Mukai flop in our previous paper "Mukai flops and derived categories II". On the other hand, a Mukai flop of type D comes from a nilpotent orbit in so(2k). Let G^+ and G^- be two connected components of the orthogonal Grassmannian G_{iso}(k,2k). Then the closure of this orbit has two S…
We prove the conjecture that two projective symplectic resolutions for a symplectic variety $W$ are related by Mukai's elementary transformations over $W$ in codimension 2 in the following cases: (i). nilpotent orbit closures in a classical simple complex Lie algebra; (ii). some quotient symplectic varieties.
Let $O$ be a nilpotent orbit of a complex semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and let $π: X \to \bar{O}$ be the finite covering associated with the universal covering of $O$. In the previous article we have explicitly constructed a $\mathbf{Q}$-factorial terminalization $\tilde{X}$ of $X$ when $\mathfrak{g}$ is classical. In the present article, we count how many different $\mathbf{Q}$-factorial terminalizations $X$ has. We construct the universal Poisson deformation of $\tilde{X}$ over $H^2(\tilde{X}, \mathbf{C})$ and look at the action of the Weyl group $W(X)$ on $H^2(\tilde{X}, \mathbf{C}…
In general, a nilpotent orbit closure in a complex simple Lie algebra \g, does not have a crepant resolution. But, it always has a Q-factorial terminalization by the minimal model program. According to B. Fu, a nilpotent orbit closure has a crepant resolution only when it is a Richardson orbit, and the resolution is obtained as a Springer map for it. In this paper, we shall generalize this result to Q-factorial terminalizations when \g$ is classical. Here, the induced orbits play an important role instead of Richardson orbits.
In a recent preprint, Y. Namikawa proposed a conjecture on Q-factorial terminalizations and their birational geometry of nilpotent orbits. He proved his conjecture for classical simple Lie algebras. In this note, we prove his conjecture for exceptional simple Lie algebras. For the birational geometry, contrary to the classical case, two new types of Mukai flops appear.
Unfortunately, some proofs in the first version of this paper were incorrect. In this revised version, some minor gaps are fixed, one serious mistake found. The main theorem is now claimed only under a restrictive technical assumption. This invalidates the application to quotient singularities by the Weyl group of type $G_2$. Everything else still stands (in particular, the claim that every symplectic resolution is semismall).
We recover a 4-dimensional wreath product X as a transversal slice to a nilpotent orbit in sp_6. By using deformations of Springer resolutions, we construct a symplectic deformation of symplectic resolutions of X.
The projectivised nilpotent orbit closure P(\bar{O}) carries a natural contact structure on its smooth part. A resolution X \to P(\bar{O}) is called contact if the contact structure on P(O) extends to a contact structure on X. It turns out that contact resolutions, crepant resolutions and minimal models of P(\bar{O}) are all the same. In this note, we determine when the projectivised nilpotent orbit closure admits a contact resolution, and in the case of existence, we study the birational geometry among different contact resolutions.
We study the quantizations of the algebras of regular functions on nilpotent orbits. We show that such a quantization always exists and is unique if the orbit is birationally rigid. Further we show that, for special birationally rigid orbits, the quantization has integral central character in all cases but four (one orbit in E_7 and three orbits in E_8). We use this to complete the computation of Goldie ranks for primitive ideals with integral central character for all special nilpotent orbits but one (in E_8). Our main ingredient is results on the geometry of normalizations of the closures of…
Let π: Y -> X be a crepant projective resolution of an affine symplectic variety X with a good C^*-action. We interpret the second cohomology H^2(Y, C) in two ways. First, H^2(Y, C) is the Picard group of Y tensorised with C. By the ample cones of different crepant resolutions of X, there is a natural chamber structure in H^2(Y, C). The second interpretation of H^2(Y, C) is the base space of the universal Poisson deformation $\mathcal Y$ of Y. Let D \subset H^2(Y, C) be the locus where the corresponding Poisson varieties are not affine. Then D is the union of finite number of hyperplanes, whic…
We prove that the bimeromorphic class of a hyperkähler manifold deformation equivalent to O'Grady's six dimensional one is determined by the Hodge structure of its Beauville-Bogomolov lattice by showing that the monodromy group is maximal. As applications, we give the structure for the Kähler and the birational Kähler cones in this deformation class and we prove that the existence of a square zero divisor implies the existence a rational lagrangian fibration with fixed fibre types.
The known counterexamples to the global Torelli theorem for higher-dimensional hyperkahler manifolds are provided by birational manifolds. We address the question whether two birational hyperkahler manifolds (i.e. irreducible symplectic) manifolds always define non-separated points in the moduli space of marked manifolds. An affirmative answer is given for the cases of Mukai's elementary transformations and birational correspondences which are isomorphic in codimension two. The techniques are applied to show that the moduli spaces of rank two sheaves on a K3 surface are deformation equivalent …
An MBM class on a hyperkahler manifold M is a second cohomology class such that its orthogonal complement in H^2(M) contains a maximal dimensional face of the boundary of the Kahler cone for some hyperkahler deformation of M. An MBM curve is a rational curve in an MBM class and such that its local deformation space has minimal possible dimension 2n-2, where 2n is the complex dimension of M. We study the MBM loci, defined as the subvarieties covered by deformations of an MBM curve within M. When M is projective, MBM loci are centers of birational contractions. For each MBM class z, we consider …
The Grassmannian Gr(2,5) is embedded in $\Bbb{P}^9$ via the Plücker embedding. The intersection of two general PGL(10)-translates of Gr(2,5) is a Calabi-Yau 3-fold X, and the intersection of the projective duals of the two translates is another Calabi-Yau 3-fold Y, deformation equivalent to X. Applying results of Kuznetsov and Jiang-Leung-Xie shows that X and Y are derived equivalent, which by a result of Addington implies that their third cohomology groups are isomorphic as polarised Hodge structures. We show that X and Y provide counterexamples to a certain "birational" Torelli statement for…
Gromov-Witten invariants have been constructed to be deformation invariant, but their behavior under other transformations is subtle. In this note we show that logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants are also invariant under appropriately defined logarithmic modifications.
We study the birational geometry of deformations of Hilbert schemes of points on the projective plane P2. We complete the picture in the paper of Daniele Arcara, Aaron Bertram, Izzet Coskun and Jack Huizenga by giving an explicit correspondence between the stable base locus walls on the Neron-Severi space and the actual walls on the Bridgeland stability space. We show that the birational geometry of a deformed Hilb P2 is different from that of Hilb P2.
This paper studies deformations and birational maps between singular moduli spaces of semistable sheaves with 2-divisible Mukai vectors on K3 surfaces. It is showed that under certain conditions, two such moduli spaces of the same dimension can be connected by deformations and birational maps.
We complete the analysis on the birational rigidity of quasismooth Fano 3-fold deformation families appearing in the Graded Ring Database as a complete intersection. When such a deformation family $X$ has Fano index at least 2 and is minimally embedded in a weighted projective space in codimension 2, we determine which cyclic quotient singularity is a maximal centre. If a cyclic quotient singularity is a maximal centre, we construct a Sarkisov link to a non-isomorphic Mori fibre space or a birational involution. This allows, in particular, the construction of new examples of Fano 3-folds of co…
Let G be a connected complex reductive affine algebraic group, and let K be a maximal compact subgroup. Let X be a compact connected Kähler manifold whose fundamental group Gamma is virtually nilpotent. We prove that the character variety Hom(Gamma, G)/G admits a natural strong deformation retraction to the subset Hom(Gamma, K)/K. The natural action of C^* on the moduli space of G-Higgs bundles over X extends to an action of C. This produces the deformation retraction.
Birational Calabi-Yau threefolds in the same deformation family provide a `weak' counterexample to the global Torelli problem, as long as they are not isomorphic. In this paper, it is shown that deformations of certain desingularized weighted complete intersections provide examples of families containing birational varieties. The constructed examples are shown to be non-isomorphic using a specialization argument.
We prove that for any two projective symplectic resolutions $Z_1$ and $Z_2$ for a nilpotent orbit closure in a complex simple Lie algebra of classical type, then $Z_1$ is deformation equivalen to $Z_2$.
Let G = Sp (2n) be the symplectic group over Z. We present a certain kind of deformation of the nilpotent cone of G with G-action. This enables us to make direct links between the Springer correspondence of sp_{2n} over C, that over characteristic two, and our exotic Springer correspondence. As a by-product, we obtain a complete description of our exotic Springer correspondence.
The notion of a holomorphically symplectic manifold can be generalized to the singular one. This paper studies the birational contraction maps between symplectic varieties, and then describes the deformation of a symplectic variety which has a symplectic resolution. Some examples are also included.
Following Bayer and Macrì, we study the birational geometry of singular moduli spaces $M$ of sheaves on a K3 surface $X$ which admit symplectic resolutions. More precisely, we use the Bayer-Macrì map from the space of Bridgeland stability conditions $\mathrm{Stab}(X)$ to the cone of movable divisors on $M$ to relate wall-crossing in $\mathrm{Stab}(X)$ to birational transformations of $M$. We give a complete classification of walls in $\mathrm{Stab}(X)$ and show that every birational model of $M$ obtained by performing a finite sequence of flops from $M$ appears as a moduli space of Bridgeland …
We study indigenous bundles in characteristic p>0 with nilpotent p-curvature, and show that they correspond to so-called deformation data. Using this equivalence, we translate the existence problem for deformation data into the existence of polynomial solutions of certain differential equations with additional properties. As in application, we show that P^1 minus four points is hyperbolically ordinary (in the sense of Mochizuki. We also give a concrete application to existence of deformation data with fixed local invariants.
Mukai's space, parametrizing simple sheaves on a K3 surface S whose numerical invariants are those of a line bundle on a curve C in S, is interpreted as a deformation of Hitchin's system on C. This is used to show that the nilpotent cone in Mukai space is Lagrangian. In rank 2, components of this nilpotent cone are described as affine bundles over symmetric products of the curve. The underlying vector bundles give the corresponding components of the Hitchin nilpotent cone.
We show that any commutative rationally ruled surface with a choice of anticanonical curve admits a 1-parameter family of noncommutative deformations parametrized by the Jacobian of the anticanonical curve, and show that many standard facts from commutative geometry (blowups commute, Quot schemes are projective, etc.) carry over. The key new tool in studying these deformations is a relatively simple description of their derived categories and the relevant t-structures; this also allows us to establish nontrivial derived equivalences for deformations of elliptic surfaces. We also establish that…
Let $X$ and $Y$ be proper birational varieties, say with only rational double points over a perfect field $k$ of positive characteristic. If $X$ lifts to $W_n(k)$, is it true that $Y$ has the same lifting property? This is true for smooth surfaces, but we show by example that this is false for smooth varieties in higher dimension, and for surfaces with canonical singularities. We also answer a stacky analogue of this question: given a canonical surface $X$ with minimal resolution $Y$ and stacky resolution $\mathcal{X}$, we characterize when liftability of $Y$ is equivalent to that of $\mathcal…
We show that any two birational projective Calabi-Yau manifolds have isomorphic small quantum cohomology algebras after a certain change of Novikov rings. The key tool used is a version of an algebra called symplectic cohomology, which is constructed using Hamiltonian Floer cohomology. Morally, the idea of the proof is to show that both small quantum products are identical deformations of symplectic cohomology of some common open affine subspace. Part of the proof uses the fact that subvarieties of positive codimension are stably displaceable.
Let $G$ be a real reductive Lie group, and $H^{\mathbb{C}}$ the complexification of its maximal compact subgroup $H\subset G$. We consider classes of semistable $G$-Higgs bundles over a Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g\geq2$ whose underlying $H^{\mathbb{C}}$-principal bundle is unstable. This allows us to find obstructions to a deformation retract from the moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles over $X$ to the moduli space of $H^{\mathbb{C}}$-bundles over $X$, in contrast with the situation when $g=1$, and to show reducibility of the nilpotent cone of the moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles, for $G$ c…
We classify the nilpotent orbits in a simple Lie algebra for which the restriction of the adjoint quotient map to a Slodowy slice is the universal Poisson deformation of its central fibre. This generalises work of Brieskorn and Slodowy on subregular orbits. In particular, we find in this way new singular symplectic hypersurfaces of dimension 4 and 6.
Stratified flops show up in the birational geometry of symplectic varieties such as resolutions of nilpotent orbits and moduli spaces of sheaves. Constructing derived equivalences between varieties related by such flops is, strangely enough, related to areas in representation theory and knot homology. In this paper we discuss how to construct such equivalences, explain the main tool for doing this (categorical Lie algebra actions) and comment on various related topics.
We systematically study the moduli theory of symplectic varieties (in the sense of Beauville) which admit a resolution by an irreducible symplectic manifold. In particular, we prove an analog of Verbitsky's global Torelli theorem for the locally trivial deformations of such varieties. Verbitsky's work on ergodic complex structures replaces twistor lines as the essential global input. In so doing we extend many of the local deformation-theoretic results known in the smooth case to such (not-necessarily-projective) symplectic varieties. We deduce a number of applications to the birational geomet…
Let G be a complex reductive linear algebraic group and let K be a maximal compact subgroup of G. Given a nilpotent group Γgenerated by r elements, we consider the representation spaces Hom(Γ,G) and Hom(Γ,K) with the natural topology induced from an embedding into G^r and K^r respectively. The goal of this paper is to prove that there is a strong deformation retraction of Hom(Γ,G) onto Hom(Γ,K). We also obtain a strong deformation retraction of the geometric invariant theory quotient Hom(Γ,G)//G onto Hom(Γ,K)/K.
By developing a theory of deformations over nilpotent Lie algebras, based on Schlessinger's deformation theory over Artinian rings, this paper investigates the pro-l-unipotent fundamental group of a variety X. If X is smooth and proper, defined over a finite field, then the Weil conjectures imply that this group is quadratically presented. If X is smooth and non-proper, then the group is defined by equations of bracket length at most four.
Let $Ł_m$ be the scheme of the laws defined by the identities of Jacobi on $\K^m$. The local studies of an algebraic Lie algebra $\g=\mathrm{R}\ltimes\n$ in $Ł_m$ and its nilpotent part $\n$ in the scheme $Ł_n^{\mathrm{R}}$ of $\mathrm{R}$-invariant Lie algebras on $\K^n$ are linked. This comparison is made by means of slices, which are transversal subschemes to the orbits of $\g$ and $\n$ under the classical groups acting on $Ł_m$ and $Ł_n^{\mathrm{R}}$ respectively. We prove a reduction theorem saying that, under certain conditions on $\g$, the local rings of the slices at $\g$ and $\n$ are …
We use twistor methods to promote Namikawa's universal Poisson deformations of conic affine symplectic singularities to families of hyperkähler structures deforming hyperkähler cone metrics. The metrics we produce are generally incomplete, but for specific classes of hyperkähler cones, even these incomplete metrics have some interest and applications: we study in detail the case of the nilpotent cone of a simple complex Lie algebra, with applications to hyperkähler metrics with symmetries and hyperkähler quotients, and the case of Kleinian singularities, with applications to codimension-4 sing…
This is a continuation of math.AG/0609741. Let Y be an affine symplectic variety with a C^*-action with positive weights, and let π: X -> Y be its crepant resolution. Then πinduces a natural map PDef(X) -> PDef(Y) of Kuranishi spaces for the Poisson deformations of X and Y. In the Part I, we proved that PDef(X) and PDef(Y) are both non-singular, and this map is a finite surjective map. In this paper (Part II), we prove that it is a Galois covering. Markman already obtained a similar result in the compact case, which was a motivation of this paper. As an application, we shall construct explicit…
