In this work we present new wall-laws boundary conditions including microscopic oscillations. We consider a newtonian flow in domains with periodic rough boundaries that we simplify considering a Laplace operator with periodic inflow and outflow boundary conditions. Following the previous approaches, see [A. Mikelic, W. Jäger, J. Diff. Eqs, 170, 96-122, (2001) ] and [Y. Achdou, O. Pironneau, F. Valentin, J. Comput. Phys, 147, 1, 187-218, (1998)], we construct high order boundary layer approximations and rigorously justify their rates of convergence with respect to epsilon (the roughness' thickness). We establish mathematically a poor convergence rate for averaged second-order wall-laws as it was illustrated numerically for instance in [Y. Achdou, O. Pironneau, F. Valentin, J. Comput. Phys, 147, 1, 187-218, (1998)]. In comparison, we establish exponential error estimates in the case of explicit multi-scale ansatz. This motivates our study to derive implicit first order multi-scale wall-laws and to show that its rate of convergence is at least of order epsilon to the three halves. We provide a numerical assessment of the claims as well as a counter-example that evidences the impossibility of an averaged second order wall-law. Our paper may be seen as the first stone to derive efficient high order wall-laws boundary conditions.
The general concern of this paper is the effect of rough boundaries on fluids. We consider a stationary flow, governed by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, in an infinite domain bounded by two horizontal rough plates. The roughness is modeled by a spatially homogeneous random field, with characteristic size $\eps$. A mathematical analysis of the flow for small $\eps$ is performed. The Navier's wall law is rigorously deduced from this analysis.
We consider a new way of establishing Navier wall laws. Considering a bounded domain $Ω$ of R N , N=2,3, surrounded by a thin layer $Σε$, along a part $Γ$2 of its boundary $\partial Ω$, we consider a Navier-Stokes flow in $Ω\cup \partial Ω\cup Σε$ with Reynolds' number of order 1/$ε$ in $Σε$. Using $Γ$-convergence arguments, we describe the asymptotic behaviour of the solution of this problem and get a general Navier law involving a matrix of Borel measures having the same support contained in the interface $Γ$2. We then consider two special cases where we characterize this matrix of measures.…
In this paper we study large time behaviors toward shock waves and rarefaction waves under periodic perturbations for 1-D convex scalar conservation laws. The asymptotic stabilities and decay rates of shock waves and rarefaction waves under periodic perturbations are proved.
We establish instability of periodic traveling waves arising in conservation laws featuring phase transition. The analysis uses the Evans function framework introduced by R.A. Gardner in the periodic case. The main new tool is a periodic generalization of the stability index introduced by Gardner and Zumbrun in the traveling front or pulse case.
We propose a new sufficient non-degeneracy condition for the strong precompactness of bounded sequences satisfying the nonlinear first-order differential constraints. This result is applied to establish the decay property for periodic entropy solutions to multidimensional scalar conservation laws.
Extending previous results of Oh--Zumbrun and Johnson--Zumbrun, we show that spectral stability implies linearized and nonlinear stability of spatially periodic traveling-wave solutions of viscous systems of conservation laws for systems of generic type, removing a restrictive assumption that wave speed be constant to first order along the manifold of nearby periodic solutions.
We derive effective wall-laws for Stokes systems with inhomogeneous boundary conditions in three dimensional bounded domains with curved rough boundaries. No-slip boundary condition is given on the locally periodic rough boundary parts with characteristic roughness size $ε$ and boundary data is assumed to be supported in the nonoscillatory smooth boundary. Based on the analysis of a boundary layer cell problem depending on geometry of the fictitious boundary and roughness shape, boundary layer approximations are constructed using orthogonal tangential vectors and normal vector on the fictitiou…
Under a precise genuine nonlinearity assumption we establish the decay of entropy solutions of a multidimensional scalar conservation law with merely continuous flux and with initial data being a sum of periodic function and a function vanishing at infinity (in the sense of measure).
In thin ferromagnetic films, the predominance of the magnetic shape anisotropy leads to in-plane magnetizations. The simplest domain wall in this geometry is the one-dimensional Neel wall that connects two magnetizations of opposite sign by a planar 180 degree rotation. In this paper, we perturb the static Neel wall profile in order to construct time-periodic Neel wall motions governed by to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. Our construction works within a certain parameter regime and requires the restriction to external magnetic fields with small amplitudes and suitable time averages.
We study the Cauchy problem for a multidimensional scalar conservation law with merely continuous flux vector in the class of Besicovitch almost periodic functions. The existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions are established. We propose also the necessary and sufficient condition for the decay of almost periodic entropy solutions as time $t\to+\infty$.
Turing patterns on unbounded domains have been widely studied in systems of reaction-diffusion equations. However, up to now, they have not been studied for systems of conservation laws. Here, we (i) derive conditions for Turing instability in conservation laws and (ii) use these conditions to find families of periodic solutions bifurcating from uniform states, numerically continuing these families into the large-amplitude regime. For the examples studied, numerical stability analysis suggests that stable periodic waves can emerge either from supercritical Turing bifurcations or, via secondary…
This paper is concerned with the large time behaviors of the entropy solutions to one-dimensional scalar convex conservation laws, of which the initial data are assumed to approach two arbitrary $ L^\infty $ periodic functions as $ x\rightarrow-\infty $ and $ x\rightarrow+\infty, $ respectively. We show that the solutions approach the Riemann solutions at algebraic rates as time increases. Moreover, a new discovery in this paper is that the difference between the two periodic perturbations at two infinities may generate a constant shift on the background shock wave, which is different from the…
We found the precise condition for the decay as $t\to\infty$ of Besicovitch almost periodic entropy solutions of multidimensional scalar conservation laws. Moreover, in the case of one space variable we establish asymptotic convergence of the entropy solution to a traveling wave (in the Besicovitch norm). Besides, the flux function turns out to be affine on the minimal segment containing the essential range of the limit profile while the speed of the traveling wave coincides with the slope of the flux function on this segment.
In this paper, we study the nonlinear stability of the composite wave consisting of planar rarefaction and planar contact waves for viscous conservation laws with degenerate flux under multi-dimensional periodic perturbations. To the level of our knowledge, it is the first stability result of the composite wave for conservation laws in several dimensions. Moreover, the perturbations studied in the present paper are periodic, which keep constantly oscillating at infinity. Suitable ansatz is constructed to overcome the difficulty caused by this kind of perturbation and delicate estimates are don…
In the previous paper \cite{J1}, we established pointwise bounds for the Green function of the linearized equation associated with spatially periodic traveling waves $\bar u$ of a system of reaction diffusion equations, and also obtained pointwise nonlinear stability and behavior of $\bar u$ under small perturbations. In this paper, using periodic resolvent kernels and the Bloch-decomposition, we establish pointwise bounds for the Green function of the linearized equation associated with periodic standing waves $\bar u$ of a system of conservation laws. We also show pointwise nonlinear stabili…
Extending results of Oh and Zumbrun in dimensions $d\ge 3$, we establish nonlinear stability and asymptotic behavior of spatially-periodic traveling-wave solutions of viscous systems of conservation laws in critical dimensions $d=1,2$, under a natural set of spectral stability assumptions introduced by Schneider in the setting of reaction diffusion equations. The key new steps in the analysis beyond that in dimensions $d\ge 3$ are a refined Green function estimate separating off translation as the slowest decaying linear mode and a novel scheme for detecting cancellation at the level of the no…
We study static 180 degree domain walls in thin infinite magnetic films. We establish the scaling of the minimal energy by Γ-convergence and the energy minimizer pro-file, which turns out to be the so called transverse wall as predicted in earlier numerical and experimental work. Surprisingly, the minimal energy decays faster than the area of the film cross section at an infinitesimal cross section diameter. We establish a rate of convergence of the rescaled energies as well.
This article investigates the long-time behaviour of parabolic scalar conservation laws of the type $\partial_t u + \mathrm{div}_yA(y,u) - Δ_y u=0$, where $y\in\mathbb R^N$ and the flux $A$ is periodic in $y$. More specifically, we consider the case when the initial data is an $L^1$ disturbance of a stationary periodic solution. We show, under polynomial growth assumptions on the flux, that the difference between $u$ and the stationary solution vanishes for large times in $L^1$ norm. The proof uses a self-similar change of variables which is well-suited for the analysis of the long time behavi…
Under natural spectral stability assumptions motivated by previous investigations of the associated spectral stability problem, we determine sharp $L^p$ estimates on the linearized solution operator about a multidimensional planar periodic wave of a system of conservation laws with viscosity, yielding linearized $L^1\cap L^p\to L^p$ stability for all $p \ge 2$ and dimensions $d \ge 1$ and nonlinear $L^1\cap H^s\to L^p\cap H^s$ stability and $L^2$-asymptotic behavior for $p\ge 2$ and $d\ge 3$. The behavior can in general be rather complicated, involving both convective (i.e., wave-like) and dif…

We generalize work of Oh & Zumbrun and Serre on spectral stability of spatially periodic traveling waves of systems of viscous conservation laws from the one-dimensional to the multi-dimensional setting. Specifically, we extend to multi-dimensions the connection observed by Serre between the linearized dispersion relation near zero frequency of the linearized equations about the wave and the homogenized system obtained by slow modulation (WKB) approximation. This may be regarded as partial justification of the WKB expansion; an immediate consequence is that hyperbolicity of the multi-dimension…
The purpose of this paper is to prove that, for a large class of nonlinear evolution equations known as scalar viscous balance laws, the spectral (linear) instability condition of periodic traveling wave solutions implies their orbital (nonlinear) instability in appropriate periodic Sobolev spaces. The analysis is based on the well-posedness theory, the smoothness of the data-solution map, and an abstract result of instability of equilibria under nonlinear iterations. The resulting instability criterion is applied to two families of periodic waves. The first family consists of small amplitude …
This paper studies the asymptotic stability of shock profiles and rarefaction waves under space-periodic perturbations for one-dimensional convex scalar viscous conservation laws. For the shock profile, we show that the solution approaches the background shock profile with a constant shift in the $ L^\infty(\mathbb{R}) $ norm at exponential rates. The new phenomena contrasting to the case of localized perturbations is that the constant shift cannot be determined by the initial excessive mass in general, which indicates that the periodic oscillations at infinities make contributions to this shi…
The goal of this paper is to prove the existence and stability of shocks for viscous scalar conservation laws with space periodic flux, in the multi-dimensional case. Such a result had been proved by the first author in one space dimension, but the extension to a multi-dimensional setting makes the existence proof non-trivial. We construct approximate solutions by restricting the size of the domain and then passing to the limit as the size of the domain goes to infinity. One of the key steps is a " normalization " procedure, which ensures that the limit objects obtained by the approximation sc…
We establish nonlinear stability and asymptotic behavior of traveling periodic waves of viscous conservation laws under localized perturbations or nonlocalized perturbations asymptotic to constant shifts in phase, showing that long-time behavior is governed by an associated second-order formal Whitham modulation system. A key point is to identify the way in which initial perturbations translate to initial data for this formal system, a task accomplished by detailed estimates on the linearized solution operator about the background wave. Notably, our approach gives both a common theoretical tre…
For $2\X2$ systems of conservation laws satisfying Bakhvalov conditions, we present a class of damping terms that still yield the existence of global solutions with periodic initial data of possibly large bounded total variation per period. We also address the question of the decay of the periodic solution. As applications we consider the systems of isentropic gas dynamics, with pressure obeying a $γ$-law, for the physical range $γ\ge1$, and also for the "non-physical" range $0<γ<1$, both in the classical Lagrangian and Eulerian formulation, and in the relativistic setting. We give complete de…
This paper studies both existence and spectral stability properties of bounded spatially periodic traveling wave solutions to a large class of scalar viscous balance laws in one space dimension with a reaction function of monostable or Fisher-KPP type. Under suitable structural assumptions, it is shown that this class of equations underlies two families of periodic waves. The first family consists of small amplitude waves with finite fundamental period which emerge from a Hopf bifurcation around a critical value of the wave speed. The second family pertains to arbitrarily large period waves wh…
This paper is concerned with the stability of stationary solutions of the conservation law $\partial_t u + \mathrm{div}_y A(y,u) -Δ_y u=0$, where the flux $A$ is periodic with respect to its first variable. Essentially two kinds of asymptotic behaviours are studied here: the case when the equation is set on $\R$, and the case when it is endowed with periodic boundary conditions. In the whole space case, we first prove the existence of viscous stationary shocks - also called standing shocks - which connect two different periodic stationary solutions to one another. We prove that standing shocks…
We analyze the Helmholtz equation in a complex domain. A sound absorbing structure at a part of the boundary is modelled by a periodic geometry with periodicity $\varepsilon>0$. A resonator volume of thickness $\varepsilon$ is connected with thin channels (opening $\varepsilon^3$) with the main part of the macroscopic domain. For this problem with three different scales we analyze solutions in the limit $\varepsilon\to 0$ and find that the effective system can describe sound absorption.
We introduce the notion of entropy solutions (e.s.) to a conservation law with an arbitrary jump continuous flux vector and prove existence of the largest and the smallest e.s. to the Cauchy problem. The monotonicity and stability properties of these solutions are also established. In the case of a periodic initial function we derive the uniqueness of e.s. Generally, the uniqueness property can be violated, which is confirmed by an example. Finally, we proved that in the case of single space variable a weak limit of a sequence of spatially periodic e.s. is an e.s. as well.
In this work, we present a new solution representation for the Helmholtz transmission problem in a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with a thin and periodic layer of finite length. The layer may consists of a periodic pertubation of the material coefficients or it is a wall modelled by boundary conditions with an periodic array of small perforations. We consider the periodicity in the layer as the small variable $δ$ and the thickness of the layer to be at the same order. Moreover we assume the thin layer to terminate at re-entrant corners leading to a singular behaviour in the asymptotic expan…
In this article, we study stochastic partial differential equations with two reflecting walls, driven by space-time white noise with non-constant diffusion coefficients under periodic boundary conditions. The existence and uniqueness of invariant measures is established under appropriate conditions. The strong Feller property is also obtained.
We show that the Cauchy Problem for a randomly forced, periodic multi-dimensional scalar first-order conservation law with additive or multiplicative noise is well-posed: it admits a unique solution, characterized by a kinetic formulation of the problem, which is the limit of the solution of the stochastic parabolic approximation.
