We prove the Conley conjecture for a closed symplectically aspherical symplectic manifold: a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a such a manifold has infinitely many periodic points. More precisely, we show that a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with finitely many fixed points has simple periodic points of arbitrarily large period. This theorem generalizes, for instance, a recent result of Hingston establishing the Conley conjecture for tori.
We show that whenever a closed symplectic manifold admits a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with finitely many simple periodic orbits, the manifold has a spherical homology class of degree two with positive symplectic area and positive integral of the first Chern class. This theorem encompasses all known cases of the Conley conjecture (symplectic CY and negative monotone manifolds) and also some new ones (e.g., weakly exact symplectic manifolds with non-vanishing first Chern class). The proof hinges on a general Lusternik-Schnirelmann type result that, under some natural additional conditions, the …
In this paper we give an alternative, purely Conley index based proof of the Arnold conjecture in $\mathbb C\mathbb P^n$ asserting that a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of $\mathbb C\mathbb P^n$ endowed with the Fubini-Study metric has at least $n+1$ fixed points.
We give a new proof of the strong Arnold conjecture for $1$-periodic solutions of Hamiltonian systems on tori, that was first shown by C. Conley and E. Zehnder in 1983. Our proof uses other methods and is shorter than the previous one. We first show that the $E$-cohomological Conley index, that was introduced by the first author recently, has a natural module structure. This yields a new cup-length and a lower bound for the number of critical points of functionals. Then an existence result for the $E$-cohomological Conley index, which applies to the setting of the Arnold conjecture, paves the …
In this paper we connect algebraic properties of the pair-of-pants product in local Floer homology and Hamiltonian dynamics. We show that for an isolated periodic orbit the product is non-uniformly nilpotent and use this fact to give a simple proof of the Conley conjecture for closed manifolds with aspherical symplectic form. More precisely, we prove that on a closed symplectic manifold the mean action spectrum of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with isolated periodic orbits is infinite.
Area and orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the standard 2-disc, referred to as symplectomorphisms of $\mathbb{D}^{2}$, allow decompositions in terms of positive twist diffeomorphisms. Using the latter decomposition we utilize the Conley index theory of discrete braid classes as introduced in [Ghrist et al., C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Sér. I Math., 331(11), 2000, Invent. Math., 152(2), 2003] in order to obtain a Morse type forcing theory of periodic points: a priori information about periodic points determines a mapping class which may force additional periodic points.
We give a different and simpler proof of a slightly modified (and weaker) variant of a recent theorem of Shelukhin extending Franks' "two-or-infinitely-many" theorem to Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms in higher dimensions and establishing a sufficiently general case of the Hofer-Zehnder conjecture. A few ingredients of our proof are common with Shelukhin's original argument, the key of which is Seidel's equivariant pair-of-pants product, but the new proof highlights a different aspect of the periodic orbit dynamics of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms.
Floer invented his theory in the mid eighties in order to prove the Arnol'd conjectures on the number of fixed point of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms and Lagrangian intersections. Over the last thirty years, many versions of Floer homology have been constructed. In symplectic and contact dynamics and geometry they have become a principal tool, with applications that go far beyond the Arnol'd conjectures: The proof of the Conley conjecture and of many instances of the Weinstein conjecture, rigidity results on Lagrangian submanifolds and on the group of symplectomorphisms, lower bounds for the top…
We establish the existence of a pair of exotic surfaces in a punctured $K3$ which remains exotic after one external stabilization and have diffeomorphic complements. A key ingredient in the proof is a vanishing theorem of the family Bauer--Furuta invariant for diffeomorphisms on a large family of spin 4-manifolds, which is proved using the tom Dieck splitting theorem in equivariant stable homotopy theory. In particular, we prove that the $S^{1}$-equivariant family Bauer--Furuta invariant of any orientation-preserving diffeomorphism on $S^{4}$ is trivial and that the $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivaria…
We prove that if a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed monotone symplectic manifold with semisimple quantum homology has more contractible fixed points, counted homologically, than the total dimension of the homology of the manifold, then it must have an infinite number of contractible periodic points. This constitutes a higher-dimensional homological generalization of a celebrated result of Franks from 1992, as conjectured by Hofer and Zehnder in 1994.
The Arnold conjecture states that a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed and connected symplectic manifold must have at least as many fixed points as the minimal number of critical points of a smooth function on the manifold. It is well known that the Arnold conjecture holds for Hamiltonian homeomorphisms of closed symplectic surfaces. The goal of this paper is to provide a counterexample to the Arnold conjecture for Hamiltonian homeomorphisms in dimensions four and higher. More precisely, we prove that every closed and connected symplectic manifold of dimension at least four admits a Hamilt…
Our first main result states that the spectral norm on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, introduced in the works of Viterbo, Schwarz and Oh, is continuous with respect to the C^0 topology, when M is symplectically aspherical. This statement was previously proven only in the case of closed surfaces. As a corollary, using a recent result of Kislev and Shelukhin, we obtain C^0 continuity of barcodes on aspherical symplectic manifolds, and furthermore define barcodes for Hamiltonian homeomorphisms. We also present several applications to Hofer geometry and dynamics of Hamiltonian homeomorp…
We show that for each $p \geq 1,$ the $L^p$-metric on the group of area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the two-sphere has infinite diameter. This solves the last open case of a conjecture of Shnirelman from 1985. Our methods extend to yield stronger results on the large-scale geometry of the corresponding metric space, completing an answer to a question of Kapovich from 2012. Our proof uses configuration spaces of points on the two-sphere, quasi-morphisms, optimally chosen braid diagrams, and, as a key element, the cross-ratio map $X_4(\mathbb{C} P^1) \to \mathcal{M}_{0,4} \cong \mathbb{C} P^1 …
In this note we discuss three interconnected problems about dynamics of Hamiltonian or, more generally, just smooth diffeomorphisms. The first two concern the existence and properties of the maps whose iterations approximate the identity map with respect to some norm, e.g., $C^1$- or $C^0$-norm for general diffeomorphisms and the $γ$-norm in the Hamiltonian case, and the third problem is the Lagrangian Poincaré recurrence conjecture.
We show that a generic Hamiltonian diffeomorphism on a closed symplectic manifold which is symplectically aspherical has at least the stable Morse number of fixed points - this is in line with a conjecture by Arnold.
