The main purpose of this paper is to study the length minimizing property of Hamiltonian paths on closed symplectic manifolds $(M,ω)$ such that there are no spherical homology class $A \in H_2(M)$ with $$ ω(A) > 0 \quad \text{and} \quad -n \leq c_1(A) < 0, $$ which we call {\it very strongly semi-positive}. We introduce the notion of {\it positively $μ$-undertwisted} Hamiltonian paths and prove that any positively undertwisted quasi-autonomous Hamiltonian path is length minimizing in its homotopy class as long as it has a fixed maximum and a fixed minimum point that are generically under-twisted. This class of Hamiltonian can have non-constant large periodic orbits. The proof uses the chain level Floer theory, spectral invariants of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms and the argument involving the thick and thin decomposition of Floer's moduli space of perturbed Cauchy-Riemann equation. And then based on this theorem and some closedness of length minimizing property, we relate the Minimality Conjecture on the very strongly semi-positive symplectic manifolds to a $C^1$-perturbation problem of Hamiltonian functions on general symplectic manifolds, which we also formulate here.
We determine the Conley-Zehnder indices of all periodic orbits of the rotating Kepler problem for energies below the critical Jacobi energy. Consequently, we show the universal cover of the bounded component of the regularized energy hypersurface is dynamically convex. Moreover, in the universal cover there is always precisely one periodic orbit with Conley-Zehnder index 3, namely the lift of the doubly covered retrograde circular orbit.
The lunar periods of our moon -- the companion of the Earth -- which date back to the Babylonians until around 600 BCE, are 29.53 days for the synodic, 27.55 days for the anomalistic and 27.21 days for the draconitic month. In this paper we define and compute these periods in terms of Floquet multipliers and Conley--Zehnder indices for planar periodic orbits in the spatial Hill lunar problem, which is a limit case of the spatial circular restricted three body problem. For very low energies, we are able to prove analytically the existence of the families of planar direct (family $g$) and retrog…
We give here a self contained and elementary introduction to the Conley-Zehnder index for a path of symplectic matrices. We start from the definition of the index as the degree of a map into the circle for a path starting at the identity and ending at a matrix for which 1 is not an eigenvalue. We prove some properties which characterize this index using normal forms for symplectic matrices obtained from geometrical considerations. We explore the relations to Robbin-Salamon index for paths of Lagrangians. We give an axiomatic characterization of the generalization of the Conley-Zehnder index fo…
We prove a useful relation between the Conley-Zehnder indices of the Reeb vector flow action along periodic orbits in prequantization bundles and the orbifold Chern class of the base symplectic orbifolds motivated by the well-known case of manifolds. We also apply this method to primary examples.
The Conley-Zehnder index associates an integer to any continuous path of symplectic matrices starting from the identity and ending at a matrix which does not admit 1 as an eigenvalue. We give new ways to compute this index. Robbin and Salamon define a generalization of the Conley-Zehnder index for any continuous path of symplectic matrices; this generalization is half integer valued. It is based on a Maslov-type index that they define for a continuous path of Lagrangians in a symplectic vector space $(W,\barΩ)$, having chosen a given reference Lagrangian $V$. Paths of symplectic endomorphisms …
We calculate the character of the Weil representation using previous results which express the Weyl symbol of metaplectic operators in terms of the symplectic Cayley transform and the Conley--Zehnder index.
We investigate the probability distribution of Conley-Zehnder indices associated with Brownian random paths on Sp(2n, R) that start at the identity. In the case of n = 1, we prove that the distribution has the same moment asymptotics as the standard random walk on the real line. We also present numerical evidence suggesting that the same asymptotics should hold for general n.
Using invariance by fixed-endpoints homotopies and a generalized notion of symplectic Cayley transform, we prove a product formula for the Conley--Zehnder index of continuous paths with arbitrary endpoints in the symplectic group. We discuss two applications of the formula, to the metaplectic group and to periodic solutions of Hamiltonian systems.
We study the combinatorial Reeb flow on the boundary of a four-dimensional convex polytope. We establish a correspondence between "combinatorial Reeb orbits" for a polytope, and ordinary Reeb orbits for a smoothing of the polytope, respecting action and Conley-Zehnder index. One can then use a computer to find all combinatorial Reeb orbits up to a given action and Conley-Zehnder index. We present some results of experiments testing Viterbo's conjecture and related conjectures. In particular, we have found some new examples of polytopes with systolic ratio $1$.
We give a new proof of the strong Arnold conjecture for $1$-periodic solutions of Hamiltonian systems on tori, that was first shown by C. Conley and E. Zehnder in 1983. Our proof uses other methods and is shorter than the previous one. We first show that the $E$-cohomological Conley index, that was introduced by the first author recently, has a natural module structure. This yields a new cup-length and a lower bound for the number of critical points of functionals. Then an existence result for the $E$-cohomological Conley index, which applies to the setting of the Arnold conjecture, paves the …
Main results are, firstly, a generalization of the Conley-Zehnder index from ODEs to the delay equation at hand and, secondly, the equality of the Morse index and the clockwise normalized Conley-Zehnder index.
Let $V$ be a closed 3-manifold with a contact form $λ$, and let $L$ be a link consisting of closed orbits for the Reeb vector field of $λ$. We study the problem of defining cylindrical contact homology on the non-compact manifold $V \backslash L$, giving sufficient conditions on a class of forms so that the chain complex can be defined in the expected way. Under further technical assumptions we show that the homology of the complex up to isomorphism is independent of choices except possibly the values of certain Conley-Zehnder indices associated with $L$. A simple example shows that the homolo…
We define the Maslov index of a loop tangent to the characteristic foliation of a coisotropic submanifold as the mean Conley--Zehnder index of a path in the group of linear symplectic transformations, incorporating the "rotation" of the tangent space of the leaf -- this is the standard Lagrangian counterpart -- and the holonomy of the characteristic foliation. Furthermore, we show that, with this definition, the Maslov class rigidity extends to the class of the so-called stable coisotropic submanifolds including Lagrangian tori and stable hypersurfaces.
We study the twisted Weyl symbol of metaplectic operators; this requires the definition of an index for symplectic paths related to the Conley-Zehnder index. We thereafter define a metaplectically covariant algebra of pseudo-differential operators acting on functions on symplectic space.
We use the criteria of Lalonde and McDuff to show that a path that is generated by a generic autonomous Hamiltonian is length minimizing with respect to the Hofer norm among all homotopic paths provided that it induces no non-constant closed trajectories in M. This generalizes a result of Hofer for symplectomorphisms of Euclidean space. The proof for general M uses Liu-Tian's construction of S^1-invariant virtual moduli cycles. As a corollary, we find that any semifree action of S^1 on M gives rise to a nontrivial element in the fundamental group of the symplectomorphism group of M. We also es…
We use the criteria of Lalonde and McDuff to determine a new class of examples of length minimizing paths in the group $Ham(M)$. For a compact symplectic manifold $M$ of dimension two or four, we show that a path in $Ham(M)$, generated by an autonomous Hamiltonian and starting at the identity, which induces no non-constant closed trajectories of points in $M$, is length minimizing among homotopic paths. The major step in the proof involves determining an upper bound for the Hofer-Zehnder capacity for symplectic manifolds of the type $(M \times D(a))$ where $M$ is compact and has dimension two …
Gutzwiller's famous semiclassical trace formula plays an important role in theoretical and experimental quantum mechanics with tremendous success. We review the physical derivation of this deep periodic orbit theory in terms of the phase space formulation with an view towards the Hamiltonian dynamical systems. The Maslov phase appearing in the trace formula is clarified by Meinrenken as Conley-Zhender index for periodic orbits of Hamiltonian systems. We also survey and compare various versions of Maslov indices to establish this fact. A refinement and improvement to Conley-Zehnder's index theo…
The first two authors showed in~\cite{AM1} how the Conley-Zehnder index of any contractible periodic Reeb orbit of a non-degenerate toric contact form on a good toric contact manifold with zero first Chern class, i.e. a Gorenstein toric contact manifold, can be explicitly computed using moment map data. In this paper we show that the same explicit method can be used to compute Conley-Zehnder indices of non-contractible periodic Reeb orbits. Under appropriate conditions, the (finite) number of such orbits in a given free homotopy class and with a given index is a contact invariant of the underl…
We show that positive $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homology is a contact invariant for a subclass of contact manifolds which are boundaries of Liouville domains. In nice cases, when the set of Conley-Zehnder indices of all good periodic Reeb orbits on the boundary of the Liouville domain is lacunary, the positive $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homology can be computed; it is generated by those orbits. We prove a "Viterbo functoriality" property: when one Liouville domain is embedded into an other one, there is a morphism (reversing arrows) between their positive $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homo…
Let M be a weakly monotone symplectic manifold, and H be a time-dependent Hamiltonian; we assume that the periodic orbits of the corresponding time-dependent Hamiltonian vector field are non-degenerate. We construct a refined version of the Floer chain complex associated to these data and any regular covering of M, and derive from it new lower bounds for the number of periodic orbits. We prove in particular that if the fundamental group of M is finite and solvable or simple, then the number of periodic orbits is not less than the minimal number of generators of the fundamental group. For a gen…
