We define the Jacobian of a Riemann surface with analytically parametrized boundary components. These Jacobians belong to a moduli space of ``open abelian varieties'' which satisfies gluing axioms similar to those of Riemann surfaces, and therefore allows a notion of ``conformal field theory'' to be defined on this space. We further prove that chiral conformal field theories corresponding to even lattices factor through this moduli space of open abelian varieties.
Let $m \geqslant 6$ be an even integer. In this short note we prove that the Jacobian variety of a quasiplatonic Riemann surface with associated group of automorphisms isomorphic to $C_2^2 \rtimes_2 C_m$ admits complex multiplication. We then extend this result to provide a criterion under which the Jacobian variety of a quasiplatonic Riemann surface admits complex multiplication.
A map $f$ from the quaternion skew field $H$ to itself, can also be thought as a transformation $f:R^4 \to R^4$. In this manuscript, the Jacobian $J(f)$ of $f$ is computed, in the case where $f$ is a quaternion polynomial. As a consequence, the Cauchy-Riemman equations for $f$ are derived. It is also shown that the Jacobian determinant of $f$ is non negative over $H$. The above commensurates well with the theory of analytic functions of one complex variable.
In recent years there has been an interest in constructing examples of closed Riemann surfaces whose jacobian varieties are isogenous to a product of many elliptic factors and some other jacobian varieties. The first ones, provided by Ekedahl and Serre, are examples for which the isogenous decomposition has all factors being elliptic curves. It is well known that given two elliptic curves $E_{1}$ and $E_{2}$, there is a closed Riemann surface $X$ of genus two, with equations in terms of the elliptic curves, and whose jacobian variety $JX$ is isogenous to $E_{1} \times E_{2}$. In this paper, gi…
We discuss an analogue of Riemann-Roch theorem for curves with an infinite number of handles. We represent such a curve X by its Shottki model, which is an open subset U of CP^{1} with infinite union of circles as a boundary. An appropriate bundle on X is ω^{1/2} \otimes L, L being a bundle with (say) constants as gluing conditions on the circles. An admissible section of an appropriate bundle on X is a holomorphic half-form on U with given gluing conditions and H^{1/2}-smoothness condition. We study the restrictions on the mutual position of the circles and the gluing constants which guarante…
We study Jacobian varieties for tropical curves. These are real tori equipped with integral affine structure and symmetric bilinear form. We define tropical counterpart of the theta function and establish tropical versions of the Abel-Jacobi, Riemann-Roch and Riemann theta divisor theorems.
A closed Riemann surface $S$ is called a generalized Fermat curve of type $(p,n)$, where $p,n \geq 2$ are integers, if it admits a group $H \cong {\mathbb Z}_{p}^{n}$ of conformal automorphisms so that $S/H$ is an orbifold of genus zero with exactly $n+1$ cone points, each one of order $p$. It is known that $S$ is a fiber product of $(n-1)$ classical Fermat curves of degree $p$ and, for $(p-1)(n-1)>2$, that it is a non-hyperelliptic Riemann surface. In this paper, assuming $p$ to be a prime integer, we provide a decomposition, up to isogeny, of the Jacobian variety $JS$ as a product of Jacobia…
Given a compact Riemann surface $X$ with an action of a finite group $G$, the group algebra Q[G] provides an isogenous decomposition of its Jacobian variety $JX$, known as the group algebra decomposition of $JX$. We consider the set of equisymmetric Riemann surfaces $\mathcal{M}(2n-1, D_{2n}, θ)$ for all $n\geq 2$. We study the group algebra decomposition of the Jacobian $JX$ of every curve $X\in \mathcal{M}(2n-1, D_{2n},θ)$ for all admissible actions, and we provide affine models for them. We use the topological equivalence of actions on the curves to obtain facts regarding its Jacobians. We …
Consider a finite group $G$ acting on a Riemann surface $S$, and the associated branched Galois cover $π_G:S \to Y=S/G$. We introduce the concept of geometric signature for the action of $G$, and we show that it captures the information of the geometric structure of the lattice of intermediate covers, the information about the isotypical decomposition of the rational representation of the group $G$ acting on the Jacobian variety $JS$ of $S$, and the dimension of the subvarieties of the isogeny decomposition of $JS$. We also give a version of Riemann's existence theorem, adjusted to the present…
In this survey of works on a characterization of Jacobians and Prym varieties among indecomposable principally polarized abelian varieties via the soliton theory we focus on a certain circle of ideas and methods which show that the characterization of Jacobians as ppav whose Kummer variety admits a trisecant line and the Pryms as ppav whose Kummer variety admits a pair of symmetric quadrisecants can be seen as an abelian version of pole systems arising in the theory of elliptic solutions to the basic soliton hierarchies. We present also recent results in this direction on the characterization …
In this short paper we generalise a theorem due to Kani and Rosen on decomposition of Jacobian varieties of Riemann surfaces with group action. This generalisation extends the set of Jacobians for which it is possible to obtain an isogeny decomposition where all the factors are Jacobians.
We look into a construction of principal abelian varieties attached to certain spin manifolds, due to Witten and Moore-Witten around 2000 and try to place it in a broader framework. This is related to Weil intermediate Jacobians but it also suggests to associate abelian varieties to polarized even weight Hodge structures. The latter construction can also be explained in terms of algebraic groups which might be useful from the point of view of Tannakian categories. The constructions depend on moduli much as in Teichmüller theory although the period maps in general are only real analytic. One of…
Novikov's conjecture on the Riemann-Schottky problem: {\it the Jacobians of smooth algebraic curves are precisely those indecomposable principally polarized abelian varieties (ppavs) whose theta-functions provide solutions to the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation}, was the first evidence of nowadays well-established fact: connections between the algebraic geometry and the modern theory of integrable systems is beneficial for both sides. The purpose of this paper is twofold. Our first goal is to present a proof of the strongest known characterization of a Jacobian variety in this direction: …
By using the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem we derive cycle relations modulo algebraic equivalence in the Jacobian of a curve. The relations generalize the relations found by Colombo and van Geemen and are analogous to but simpler than the relations recently found by Herbaut. In an appendix due to Zagier it is shown that these sets of relations are equivalent.
By employing the theory of vector-valued automorphic forms for non-unitarizable representations, we provide a new bound for the number of linear relations with algebraic coefficients between the periods of an algebraic Riemann surface with many automorphisms. The previous best-known general bound for this number was the genus of the Riemann surface, a result due to Wolfart. Our new bound significantly improves on this estimate, and it can be computed explicitly from the canonical representation of the Riemann surface. As observed by Shiga and Wolfart, this bound may then be used to estimate th…
We investigate the geometry of the moduli space of N-vortices on line bundles over a closed Riemann surface of genus g > 1, in the little explored situation where 1 =< N < g. In the regime where the area of the surface is just large enough to accommodate N vortices (which we call the dissolving limit), we describe the relation between the geometry of the moduli space and the complex geometry of the Jacobian variety of the surface. For N = 1, we show that the metric on the moduli space converges to a natural Bergman metric on the Riemann surface. When N > 1, the vortex metric typically degenera…
In this article we classify compact Riemann surfaces of genus $1+q^2$ with a group of automorphisms of order $3q^2,$ where $q$ is a prime number. We also study decompositions of the corresponding Jacobian varieties.
In this article we study compact Riemann surfaces with a non-large group of automorphisms of maximal order; namely, compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with a group of automorphisms of order $4g-4.$ Under the assumption that $g-1$ is prime, we provide a complete classification of them and determine isogeny decompositions of the corresponding Jacobian varieties.
This work makes a parallel construction for curves on threefolds to a ``current-theoretic'' proof of Abel's theorem giving the rational equivalence of divisors P and Q on a Riemann surface when Q - P is (equivalent to) zero in the Jacobian variety of the Riemann surface. The parallel construction is made for homologous ''sub-canonical'' curves P and Q on a general class of threefolds. If P and Q are algebraically equivalent and Q - P is zero in the (intermediate) Jacobian of a threefold, the construction ''almost'' gives rational equivalence.
Given a compact Riemann surface X with an action of a finite group G, the group algebra Q[G] provides an isogenous decomposition of its Jacobian variety JX, known as the group algebra decomposition of JX. We obtain a method to concretely build a decomposition of this kind. Our method allows us to study the geometry of the decomposition. For instance, we build several decompositions in order to determine which one has kernel of smallest order. We apply this method to families of trigonal curves up to genus 10.
We find an infinite set of eigenfunctions for the Laplacian with respect to a flat metric with conical singularities and acting on degree zero bundles over special Riemann surfaces of genus greater than one. These special surfaces correspond to Riemann period matrices satisfying a set of equations which lead to a number theoretical problem. It turns out that these surfaces precisely correspond to branched covering of the torus. This reflects in a Jacobian with a particular kind of complex multiplication.
Bujalance, Costa and Izquierdo have recently proved that all those Riemann surfaces of genus $g \ge 2$ different from $3, 6, 12, 15$ and 30, with exactly $4g$ automorphisms form an equisymmetric one-dimensional family, denoted by $\mathcal{F}_g.$ In this paper, for every prime number $q \ge 5,$ we explore further properties of each Riemann surface $S$ in $\mathcal{F}_q$ as well as of its Jacobian variety $JS.$
In this article we study compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with an automorphism of prime order $g+1.$ The main result provides a classification of such surfaces. In addition, we give a description of them as algebraic curves, determine and realise their full automorphism groups and compute their fields of moduli. We also study some aspects of their Jacobian varieties such as isogeny decompositions and complex multiplication. Finally, we determine the period matrix of the Accola-Maclachlan curve of genus four.
We give equations for 13 genus-2 curves over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, with models over $\mathbb{Q}$, whose unpolarized Jacobians are isomorphic to the square of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication by a maximal order. If the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis is true, there are no further examples of such curves. More generally, we prove under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis that there exist exactly 46 genus-2 curves over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ with field of moduli $\mathbb{Q}$ whose Jacobians are isomorphic to the square of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication by a maximal o…
Topologically, a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g$ is a $g$-holed torus (a sphere with $g$ handles). This paper is an introduction to the theory of compact Riemann surfaces and algebraic curves. It presents the basic ideas and properties as an expository essay, explores some of their numerous consequences and gives a concise account of the elementary aspects of different viewpoints in curve theory. We discuss and prove most intuitively some geometric-topological aspects of the algebraic functions and the associated Riemann surfaces. Abelian and normalized differentials, Riemann's biline…
Belolipetsky and Jones classified those compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ admitting a large group of automorphisms of order $λ(g-1)$, for each $λ>6,$ under the assumption that $g-1$ is a prime number. In this article we study the remaining large cases; namely, we classify Riemann surfaces admitting $5(g-1)$ and $6(g-1)$ automorphisms, with $g-1$ a prime number. As a consequence, we obtain the classification of Riemann surfaces admitting a group of automorphisms of order $3(g-1)$, with $g-1$ a prime number. We also provide isogeny decompositions of their Jacobian varieties.
The reciprocity law for abelian differentials of first and second kind is generalized to higher-dimensional varieties. It is shown that $H^1(V)$ of a polarized variety $V$ is encoded in the Laurent data along a curve germ in $V$, with the polarization form on $H^1(V)$ corresponding to the {\em one-dimensional} residue pairing. This associates an {\em extended abelian variety} to $V$; if $V$ is an abelian variety itself, our construction ``extends" it, even when $V$ is not a Jacobian.
We construct a moduli space for Riemann surfaces that is universal in the sense that it represents compact Riemann surfaces of any finite genus. This moduli space is stratifed according to genus, and it carries a metric and a measure that induce a Riemannian metric and a finite volume measure on each stratum. Applications to the Plateau-Douglas problem for minimal surfaces of varying genus and to the partition function of Bosonic string theory are outlined. The construction starts with a universal moduli space of Abelian varieties. This space carries a structure of an infinite dimensional loca…
For a family of Jacobians of smooth pointed curves there is a notion of tautological algebra. There is an action of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ on this algebra. We define and study a lifting of the Polishchuk operator, corresponding to $f\in \mathfrak{sl}_2$, on an algebra consisting of punctured Riemann surfaces. As an application we prove that a collection of tautological relations on moduli of curves, discovered by Faber and Zagier, come from a class of relations on the universal Jacobian.
A long-standing question in string theory is to find the explicit expression of the bosonic measure, a crucial issue also in determining the superstring measure. Such a measure was known up to genus three. Belavin and Knizhnik conjectured an expression for genus four which has been proved in the framework of the recently introduced vector-valued Teichmueller modular forms. It turns out that for g>3 the bosonic measure is expressed in terms of such forms. In particular, the genus four Belavin-Knizhnik "wonderful formula" has a remarkable extension to arbitrary genus whose structure is deeply re…
It is well-known that a finite graph can be viewed, in many respects, as a discrete analogue of a Riemann surface. In this paper, we pursue this analogy further in the context of linear equivalence of divisors. In particular, we formulate and prove a graph-theoretic analogue of the classical Riemann-Roch theorem. We also prove several results, analogous to classical facts about Riemann surfaces, concerning the Abel-Jacobi map from a graph to its Jacobian. As an application of our results, we characterize the existence or non-existence of a winning strategy for a certain chip-firing game played…
We investigate to what extent the theory of Néron models of jacobians and of abel-jacobi maps extends to relative curves over base schemes of dimension greater than 1. We give a necessary and sufficient criterion for the existence of a Néron model. We use this to show that, in general, Néron models do not exist even after making a modification or even alteration of the base. On the other hand, we show that Néron models do exist outside some codimension-2 locus.
We classify compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$, where $g-1$ is a prime $p$, which have a group of automorphisms of order $ρ(g-1)$ for some integer $ρ\ge 1$, and determine isogeny decompositions of the corresponding Jacobian varieties. This extends results of Belolipetzky and the second author for $ρ>6$, and of the first and third authors for $ρ=3, 4, 5$ and $6$. As a corollary we classify the orientably regular hypermaps (including maps) of genus $p+1$, together with the non-orientable regular hypermaps of characteristic $-p$, with automorphism group of order divisible by the prime $p$; thi…
Let $k,n \geq 2$ be integers. A generalized Fermat curve of type $(k,n)$ is a compact Riemann surface $S$ that admits a subgroup of conformal automorphisms $H \leq \mbox{Aut}(S)$ isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_k^n$, such that the quotient surface $S/H$ is biholomorphic to the Riemann sphere $\hat{\mathbb{C}}$ and has $n+1$ branch points, each one of order $k$. There exists a good algebraic model for these objects, which makes them easier to study. Using tools from algebraic topology and integration theory on Riemann surfaces, we find a set of generators for the first homology group of a generalized…
This expository paper details the theory of rank one Higgs bundles over a closed Riemann surface X and their relationship to representations of the fundamental group of X. We construct an equivalence between the deformation theories of flat connections and Higgs pairs. This provides an identification of moduli spaces arising in different contexts. The moduli spaces are real Lie groups. From each context arises a complex structure, and the different complex structures define a hyper-Kaehlerstructure. The twistor space, real forms, and various group actions are computed explicitly in terms of th…
It is well known that every closed Riemann surface $S$ of genus $g \geq 2$, admitting a group $G$ of conformal automorphisms so that $S/G$ has triangular signature, can be defined over a finite extension of ${\mathbb Q}$. It is interesting to know, in terms of the algebraic structure of $G$, if $S$ can in fact be defined over ${\mathbb Q}$. This is the situation if $G$ is either abelian or isomorphic to $A \rtimes {\mathbb Z}_{2}$, where $A$ is an abelian group. On the other hand, as shown by Streit and Wolfart, if $G = {\mathbb Z}_{p} \rtimes {\mathbb Z}_{q}$ where $p,q>3$ are prime integers,…
We revisit three results due to Morita expressing certain natural integral cohomology classes on the universal family of Riemann surfaces C_g, coming from the parallel symplectic form on the universal jacobian, in terms of the Miller-Morita-Mumford classes e and e_1. Our discussion will be on the level of the natural 2-forms representing the relevant cohomology classes, and involves a comparison with other natural 2-forms representing e, e_1 induced by the Arakelov metric on the relative tangent bundle of C_g over M_g. A secondary object called a_g occurs, which was discovered and studied by K…
For the Jacobian of a curve, the Riemann singularity theorem gives a geometric interpretation of the singularities of the theta divisor in terms of special linear series on the curve. This paper proves an analogous theorem for Prym varieties. Applications of this theorem to cubic threefolds, and Prym varieties of dimension five, are also considered.
Let $S_{0}, S_{1}$ and $S_{2}$ be connected Riemann surfaces and let $β_{1}:S_{1} \to S_{0}$ and $β_{2}:S_{2} \to S_{0}$ be surjective holomorphic maps. The associated fiber product $S_{1} \times_{(β_{1},β_{2})} S_{2}$ has the structure of a singular Riemann surface, endowed with a canonical map $β$ to $S_{0}$ satisfying that $β_{j} \circ π_{j}=β$, where $π_{j}$ is coordinate projection onto $S_{j}$. In this paper we provide a Fuchsian description of the fiber product and obtain that if one the maps $β_{j}$ is a regular branched cover, then all its irreducible components are isomorphic. In the…
We study harmonic morphisms of graphs as a natural discrete analogue of holomorphic maps between Riemann surfaces. We formulate a graph-theoretic analogue of the classical Riemann-Hurwitz formula, study the functorial maps on Jacobians and harmonic 1-forms induced by a harmonic morphism, and present a discrete analogue of the canonical map from a Riemann surface to projective space. We also discuss several equivalent formulations of the notion of a hyperelliptic graph, all motivated by the classical theory of Riemann surfaces. As an application of our results, we show that for a 2-edge-connect…
Riemann surface carries a natural line bundle, the determinant bundle. The space of sections of this line bundle (or its multiples) constitutes a natural non-abelian generalization of the spaces of theta functions on the Jacobian. There has been much progress in the last few years towards a better understanding of these spaces, including a rigorous proof of the celebrated Verlinde formula which gives their dimension. This survey paper tries to explain what is now known and what remains open.
Let SU(2,1) be the moduli space of stable rank two vector bundles having fixed determinant of odd degree over a compact Riemann surface C. In this paper it is shown that the Theta divisor of SU(2,1) is very ample for every C. The proof is related to the study of the base locus of the pencil of divisors 2-theta in the Jacobian of C which is naturally associated to a point of SU(2,1).
Let $p \geq 3$ be a prime integer and, for $l \geq 1$, let $G \cong {\mathbb Z}_{p}^{l}$ be a group of conformal automorphisms of some closed Riemann surface $S$ of genus $g \geq 2$. By the Riemann-Hurwitz formula, either $p \leq g+1$ or $p=2g+1$. If $l=1$ and $p=2g+1$, then $S/G$ is the sphere with exactly three cone points and, if moreover $p \geq 7$, then $G$ is the unique $p$-Sylow subgroup of ${\rm Aut}(S)$. If $l=1$ and $p=g+1$, then $S/G$ is the sphere with exactly four cone points and, if moreover $p \geq 13$, then $G$ is again the unique $p$-Sylow subgroup. The above unique facts perm…
