By using the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem we derive cycle relations modulo algebraic equivalence in the Jacobian of a curve. The relations generalize the relations found by Colombo and van Geemen and are analogous to but simpler than the relations recently found by Herbaut. In an appendix due to Zagier it is shown that these sets of relations are equivalent.

Let $J$ be the Jacobian of a smooth projective complex curve $C$ which admits non-trivial automorphisms, and let $A(J)$ be the ring of algebraic cycles on $J$ with rational coefficients modulo algebraic equivalence. We present new tautological rings in $A(J)$ which extend in a natural way the tautological ring studied by Beauville (Compos Math 140(3):683-688, 2004). Let J be the Jacobian of a smooth curve C of genus g, and let A(J) be the ring of algebraic cycles modulo algebraic equivalence on J, tensored with Q. We study in this paper the smallest Q-vector subspace R of A(J) which contains C and is stable under the natural operations of A(J) : intersection and Pontryagin products, pull back and push down under multiplication by integers. We prove that this "tautological subring" is generated (over Q) by the classes of the subvarieties W_1=C, W_2=C+C, ..., W_{g-1}. If C admits a morphism of degree d onto P^1, we prove that the last d-1 classes suffice.
We describe the isotypical decomposition of the Jacobian variety JW of the Galois extension W-->T of any fourfold cover of smooth connected irreducible projective complex curves X-->T, in terms of Prym's of intermediate covers. We also compute the degree of the isogenies involved and as a result we obtain new proofs of the bigonal and trigonal constructions. This is a slightly revised version of the author's 2010 diploma thesis. It is concerned with the interplay between real multiplication on Jacobian varieties, as the title suggests, and complex geodesics in the moduli space of curves. Large parts are expository and may hopefully serve as a very incomplete introduction to Teichmueller disks and curves, the moduli space of abelian differentials with its SL2(R)-operation and variations of Hodge structure.
We show that the infinitesimal deformations of the Brill--Noether locus $W_d$ attached to a smooth non-hyperelliptic curve $C$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the deformations of $C$. As an application, we prove that if a Jacobian $J$ deforms together with a minimal cohomology class out the Jacobian locus, then $J$ is hyperelliptic. In particular, this provides an evidence to a conjecture of Debarre on the classification of ppavs carrying a minimal cohomology class. Finally, we also study simultaneous deformations of Fano surfaces of lines and intermediate Jacobians.
We construct some natural cycles with trivial regulator in the higher Chow groups of Jacobians. For hyperelliptic curves we use a criterion due to J. Lewis to prove that the cycles we construct are indecomposable, and then use a specialization argument to prove indecomposability for more general curves. We present a collection of algebraic equivalences between tautological cycles on the Jacobian $J$ of a curve, i.e., cycles in the subring of the Chow ring of $J$ generated by the classes of certain standard subvarieties of $J$. These equivalences are universal in the sense that they hold for all curves of given genus. We show also that they are compatible with the action of the Fourier transform on tautological cycles and compute this action explicitly.

We study families of Galois covers of curves of positive genus. It is known that under a numerical condition these families yield Shimura subvarieties generically contained in the Jacobian locus. We prove that there are only 6 families satisfying this condition, all of them in genus 2,3 or 4. We also show that these families admit two fibrations in totally geodesic subvarieties, generalizing a result of Grushevsky and Möller. Countably many of these fibres are Shimura. Thus the Jacobian locus contains infinitely many Shimura subvarieties of positive dimension of any $g \leq 4$.

Using the compactified universal jacobian over the moduli space of stable marked curves, we give an expression in terms of natural classes of the zero section of the compactified universal jacobian the (rational) Chow ring. After extending variants of the Abel-Jacobi map to a locus containing curves of treelike type we give a formula for the pullback of the said zero section along these extensions. The same approach is also applied to recover known formulas for the pullback of theta divisors to the moduli space of marked stable curves.

The Torelli group of a compact non-orientable Klein surface is the subgroup of the modular group consisting of the mapping classes that act trivially on the first homology group of the surface. We prove that if a surface has genus at least $3$, then the Torelli group acts fixed points free on the Teichmüller space of the surface.
