Inspired by several works on jet schemes and motivic integration, we consider an extension to singular varieties of the classical definition of discrepancy for morphisms of smooth varieties. The resulting invariant, which we call Jacobian discrepancy, is closely related to the jet schemes and the Nash blow-up of the variety. This notion leads to a framework in which adjunction and inversion of adjunction hold in full generality, and several consequences are drawn from these properties. The main result of the paper is a formula measuring the gap between the dualizing sheaf and the Grauert-Riemenschneider canonical sheaf of a normal variety. As an application, we give characterizations for rational and Du Bois singularities on normal Cohen-Macaulay varieties in terms of Jacobian discrepancies. In the case when the canonical class of the variety is Q-Cartier, our result provides the necessary corrections for the converses to hold in theorems of Elkik, of Kovaćs, Schwede and Smith, and of Kollaŕ and Kovaćs on rational and Du Bois singularities.
In this paper we study singularities in arbitrary characteristic. We propose Finite Determination Conjecture for Mather-Jacobian minimal log discrepancies in terms of jet schemes of a singularity. The conjecture is equivalent to the boundedness of the number of the blow-ups to obtain a prime divisor which computes the Mather-Jacobian minimal log discrepancy. We also show that this conjecture yields some basic properties of singularities; e.g. openness of Mather-Jacobian (log) canonical singularities, stability of these singularities under small deformations and lower semi-continuity of Mather-…
This note shows that the orbifold Jacobian algebra associated to each invertible polynomial defining an exceptional unimodal singularity is isomorphic to the (usual) Jacobian algebra of the Berglund-Hübsch transform of an invertible polynomial defining the strange dual singularity in the sense of Arnold.
In this paper we establish that the singularities of the universal compactified Jacobian are canonical if the genus is at least four. As a corollary we determine the Kodaira dimension and the Iitaka fibration of the universal compactified Jacobian for every degree and genus. We also determine the birational automorphism group for every degree if the genus is at least twelve. This extends work of G. Farkas and A. Verra, as well as that of G. Bini, C. Fontanari and the third author.
We prove the existence of $n$-complements for pairs with DCC coefficients and the ACC for minimal log discrepancies of exceptional singularities. In order to prove these results, we develop the theory of complements for real coefficients. We introduce $(n,Γ_0)$-decomposable $\mathbb{R}$-complements, and show its existence for pairs with DCC coefficients.
In this paper, we prove that Mather-Jacobian (MJ) singularities are preserved under the process of generic linkage. More precisely, let $X$ be a variety with MJ-canonical (resp. MJ-log canonical) singularities. Then a generic link of $X$ is also MJ-canonical (resp. MJ-log canonical). This further leads us to a result on minimal log discrepancies under generic linkage.
In this article we prove a local implication of boundedness of Fano varieties. More precisely, we prove that $d$-dimensional $a$-log canonical singularities, with standard coefficients, which admit an $ε$-plt blow-up have minimal log discrepancies belonging to a finite set which only depends on $d,a$ and $ε$. This result gives a natural geometric stratification of the possible mld's in a fixed dimension by finite sets. As an application, we prove the ascending chain condition for minimal log discrepancies of exceptional singularities. We also introduce an invariant for klt singularities relate…
We show that there exists a positive real number $δ>0$ such that for any normal quasi-projective $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein $3$-fold $X$, if $X$ has worse than canonical singularities, that is, the minimal log discrepancy of $X$ is less than $1$, then the minimal log discrepancy of $X$ is not greater than $1-δ$. As applications, we show that the set of all non-canonical klt Calabi-Yau $3$-folds are bounded modulo flops, and the global indices of all klt Calabi-Yau $3$-folds are bounded from above.
This paper summarizes the results at the present moment about singularities with respect to the Mather-Jacobian log discrepancies over algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. The basic point is the Inversion of Adjunction with respect to Mather-Jacobian discrepancies holds in arbitrary characteristic. Based on this fact we will reduce many geometric properties of the singularities into the problem on jet schemes and try to avoid discussions which are distinctive for characteristic 0.
We show that every convergent power series with monomial extended Jacobian ideal is right equivalent to a Thom-Sebastiani polynomial. This solves a problem posed by Hauser and Schicho. On the combinatorial side, we introduce a notion of Jacobian semigroup ideal involving a transversal matroid. For any such ideal we construct a defining Thom-Sebastiani polynomial. On the analytic side, we show that power series with a quasihomogeneous extended Jacobian ideal are strongly Euler homogeneous. Due to a Mather-Yau-type theorem, such power series are determined by their Jacobian ideal up to right equ…
We investigate the relations between the syzygies of the Jacobian ideal of the defining equation for a projective hypersurface $V$ with isolated singularities and the Torelli properties of $V$ (in the sense of Dolgachev-Kapranov). We show in particular that hypersurfaces with a small Tjurina numbers are Torelli in this sense. When $V$ is a plane curve, or more interestingly, a surface in $P^3$, we discuss the stability of the reflexive sheaf of logarithmic vector fields along $V$. A new lower bound for the minimal degree of a syzygy associated to a 1-dimensional complete intersection is also g…
To every reduced (projective) curve X with planar singularities one can associate many fine compactified Jacobians, depending on the choice of a polarization on X, which are birational (possibly non-isomorphic) Calabi-Yau projective varieties with locally complete intersection singularities. We define a Poincare' sheaf on the product of any two (possibly equal) fine compactified Jacobians of X and show that the integral transform with kernel the Poincare' sheaf is an equivalence of their derived categories. In particular, any two fine compactified Jacobians are derived equivalent. When applied…
To every singular reduced projective curve X one can associate many fine compactified Jacobians, depending on the choice of a polarization on X, each of which yields a modular compactification of a disjoint union of the generalized Jacobian of X. We investigate the geometric properties of fine compactified Jacobians focusing on curves having locally planar singularities. We give examples of nodal curves admitting non isomorphic (and even non homeomorphic over the field of complex numbers) fine compactified Jacobians. We study universal fine compactified Jacobians, which are relative fine compa…
We recall first the relations between the syzygies of the Jacobian ideal of the defining equation for a projective hypersurface $V$ with isolated singularities and the versality properties of $V$, as studied by du Plessis and Wall. Then we show how the bounds on the global Tjurina number of $V$ obtained by du Plessis and Wall lead to substantial improvements of our previous results on the stability of the reflexive sheaf $T\langle V\rangle$ of logarithmic vector fields along $V$, and on the Torelli property in the sense of Dolgachev-Kapranov of $V$.
We generalize the construction of geometric superpolynomials for unibranch plane curve singularities from our prior paper from rank one to any ranks. The new feature is the definition of counterparts of Jacobian factors (directly related to compactified Jacobians) for higher ranks, which is parallel to the classical passage from invertible bundles to vector bundles over algebraic curves. This is an entirely local theory, connected with affine Springer fibers for non-reduced (germs of) spectral curves. We conjecture and justify numerically the connection of our geometric polynomials in arbitrar…
We prove that certain degenerate abelian varieties, the compactified Jacobian of a nodal curve and a stable quasiabelian variety, satisfy autoduality. We establish this result by proving a comparison theorem that relates the associated family of Picard schemes to the Néron model, a result of independent interest. In our proof, a key fact is that the total space of a suitable family of compactified Jacobians has rational singularities.
This note gives the complete projective classification of rational, cuspidal plane curves of degree at least 6, and having only weighted homogeneous singularities. It also sheds new light on some previous characterizations of free and nearly free curves in terms of Tjurina numbers. Finally, we suggest a stronger form of Terao's conjecture on the freeness of a line arrangement being determined by its combinatorics.
We begin with a comprehensive discussion of the punctual Hilbert scheme of the regular two-dimensional local ring in terms of the Gröbner cells. These schemes are the most degenerate fibers of the Grothendieck-Deligne norm map (the Hilbert-Chow morphism), playing an important role in the study of Hilbert schemes of smooth surfaces. They are generally singular, but their Gröbner cells are affine spaces; they admit an explicit parametrization due to Conca and Valla. We use this to obtain the Gröbner decomposition of compactified Jacobians of plane curve singularities, which is non-trivial even f…
We suggest a relatively simple and totally geometric conjectural description of uncolored DAHA superpolynomials of arbitrary algebraic knots (conjecturally coinciding with the reduced stable Khovanov-Rozansky polynomials) via the flagged Jacobian factors (new objects) of the corresponding unibranch plane curve singularities. This generalizes the Cherednik-Danilenko conjecture on the Betti numbers of Jacobian factors, the Gorsky combinatorial conjectural interpretation of superpolynomials of torus knots and that by Gorsky-Mazin for their constant term. The paper mainly focuses on non-torus alge…
We study ample divisors X with only rational singularities on abelian varieties that decompose into a sum of two lower dimensional subvarieties, X=V+W. For instance, we prove an optimal lower bound on the degree of the corresponding addition map, and show that the minimum can only be achieved if X is a theta divisor. Conjecturally, the latter happens only on Jacobians of curves and intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds. As an application, we prove that nondegenerate generic vanishing subschemes of indecomposable principally polarized abelian varieties are automatically reduced and irreduc…
We introduce and study a log discrepancy function on the space of semivaluations centered on an integral noetherian scheme of positive characteristic. Our definition shares many properties with the analogue in characteristic zero; we prove that if log resolutions exist, then our definition agrees with previous approaches to log discrepancies of semivaluations that these resolutions. We then apply this log discrepancy to a variety of topics in singularity theory over fields of positive characteristic. Strong F-regularity and sharp $F$-purity of Cartier subalgebras are detected using positivity …
The main problem studied is resolution of singularities of the cotangent sheaf of a complex- or real-analytic variety Y (or of an algebraic variety Y over a field of characteristic zero). Given Y, we ask whether there is a global resolution of singularities s: X -> Y such that the pulled-back cotangent sheaf of Y is generated by differential monomials in suitable coordinates at every point of X ("Hsiang-Pati coordinates''). Desingularization of the cotangent sheaf is equivalent to monomialization of Fitting ideals generated by minors of a given order of the logarithmic Jacobian matrix of s. We…
We show that if f is a nonzero, noninvertible function on a smooth complex variety X and J_f is the Jacobian ideal of f, then lct(f, J_f^2)>1 if and only if the hypersurface defined by f has rational singularities. Moreover, if this is not the case, then lct(f, J_f^2)=lct(f). We give two proofs, one relying on arc spaces and one that shows that the minimal exponent of f is at least as large as lct(f, J_f^2). In the case of a polynomial over the algebraic closure of Q, we also prove an analogue of this latter inequality, with the minimal exponent replaced by the motivic oscillation index moi(f)…
