We begin with a comprehensive discussion of the punctual Hilbert scheme of the regular two-dimensional local ring in terms of the Gröbner cells. These schemes are the most degenerate fibers of the Grothendieck-Deligne norm map (the Hilbert-Chow morphism), playing an important role in the study of Hilbert schemes of smooth surfaces. They are generally singular, but their Gröbner cells are affine spaces; they admit an explicit parametrization due to Conca and Valla. We use this to obtain the Gröbner decomposition of compactified Jacobians of plane curve singularities, which is non-trivial even for the generalized Jacobians (principal ideals only). One of the application is the topological invariance of certain variants of compactified Jacobians and the corresponding motivic superpolynomials for analytic deformations of quasi-homogenous plane curve singularities and some similar families.
In this paper, we show the full flag Hilbert scheme of points of nodal curves has only complete intersection singularities. We study the Hilbert scheme of points of the cusp curve and show the punctual Hilbert scheme is isomorphic to \mathbb{P}^1. Furthermore Hilbert scheme has only one singularty along the punctual one.
Pfister and Steenbrink studied punctual Hilbert schemes for irreducible curve singularities. In particular, they investigated the structure of special punctual Hilbert schemes for certain monomial curve singularities. In this paper, we study the punctual Hilbert schemes of all degrees for the curve singularities of types $E_6$ and $E_8$. For our analysis, we introduce computational algorithms to decompose a punctual Hilbert schemes into affine cells. We also use the theory of Gröbner basis and known results about the compactified Jacobian of singular curves to prove our main theorems.
We give an explicit stratification of the punctual Hilbert schemes of $n$ points of $\mathbb{A}^{m+1}$ with respect to $m$-dimensional partitions in the Grothendieck group of varieties. As an application, we calculate the classes of the punctual Hilbert schemes of $n$ points of $\mathbb{A}^3$ and the classes of the Hilbert schemes of $n$ points of $\mathbb{A}^3$ in the Grothendieck of varieties for $n\leq 5$.
The purpose of this paper is to study the Zariski tangent space of the punctual Hilbert scheme parametrizing subschemes of a smooth surface which are supported at a single point. We give a lower bound on the dimension of the tangent space in general and show the bound is sharp for subschemes of the affine plane cut out by monomials. Furthermore for monomial subschemes we give an explicit combinatorial formula for the dimension of the tangent space.
We study certain DT invariants arising from stable coherent sheaves in a nonsingular projective threefold supported on the members of a linear system of a fixed line bundle. When the canonical bundle of the threefold satisfies certain positivity conditions, we relate the DT invariants to Carlsson-Okounkov formulas for the "twisted Euler's number" of the punctual Hilbert schemes of nonsingular surfaces, and conclude they have a modular property.
In this article, we study topological properties of Voisin's punctual Hilbert schemes of an almost-complex fourfold $X$. In this setting, we compute their Betti numbers and construct Nakajima operators. We also define tautological bundles associated with any complex bundle on $X$, which are shown to be canonical in $K$-theory.
We show that a smooth projective curve of genus $g$ can be reconstructed from its polarized Jacobian $(X, Θ)$ as a certain locus in the Hilbert scheme $\mathrm{Hilb}^d(X)$, for $d=3$ and for $d=g+2$, defined by geometric conditions in terms of the polarization $Θ$. The result is an application of the Gunning--Welters trisecant criterion and the Castelnuovo--Schottky theorem by Pareschi--Popa and Grushevsky, and its scheme theoretic extension by the authors.
It is known that the variety parametrizing pairs of commuting nilpotent matrices is irreducible and that this provides a proof of the irreducibility of the punctual Hilbert scheme in the plane. We extend this link to the nilpotent commuting variety of parabolic subalgebras of $M\_n(\K)$ and to the punctual nested Hilbert scheme. By this method, we obtain a lower bound on the dimension of these moduli spaces. We characterize the numerical conditions under which they are irreducible. In some reducible cases, we describe the irreducible components and their dimension.
The purpose of this short note is to study dominant rational maps from punctual Hilbert schemes of length $k>1$ of projective K3 surfaces $S$ containing infinitely many rational curves. Precisely, we prove that their image is necessarily rationally connected if this rational map is not generically finite. As an application, we simplify the proof of C. Voisin's of the fact that symplectic involutions of any projective K3 surface $S$ act trivially on $\mathrm{CH}_0(S)$.
We study "straight equisingular deformations", a linear subfunctor of all equisingular deformations and describe their seminuniversal deformation by an ideal containing the fixed Tjurina ideal. Moreover, we show that the base space of the seminuniversal straight equisingular deformation appears as the fibre of a morphism from the μ-constant stratum onto a punctual Hilbert scheme parametrizing certain zero-dimensional schemes concentrated in the singular point. Although equisingular deformations of plane curve singularities are very well understood, we believe that this aspect may give a new in…
Given a vector bundle $E$ on a smooth projective curve or surface $X$ carrying the structure of a $V$-twisted Hitchin pair for some vector bundle $V$, we observe that the associated tautological bundle $E^{[n]}$ on the punctual Hilbert scheme of points $X^{[n]}$ has an induced structure of a $((V^\vee)^{[n]})^\vee$-twisted Hitchin pair, where $(V^\vee)^{[n]}$ is a vector bundle on $X^{[n]}$ constructed using the dual $V^\vee$ of $V$. In particular, a Higgs bundle on $X$ induces a logarithmic Higgs bundle on the Hilbert scheme $X^{[n]}$. We then show that the known results on stability of tauto…
In this article, we study the rational cohomology rings of Voisin's punctual Hilbert schemes $X^{[n]}$ associated to a symplectic compact fourfold $X$. We prove that these rings can be universally constructed from $H^*(X,\mathbb{Q})$ and $c_1(X)$, and that Ruan's crepant resolution conjecture holds if $c_1(X)$ is a torsion class. Next, we prove that for any almost-complex compact fourfold $X$, the complex cobordism class of $X^{[n]}$ depends only on the cobordism class of $X$.
A rational Lagrangian fibration f on an irreducible symplecitc variety V is a rational map which is birationally equivalent to a regular surjective morphism with Lagrangian fibers. By analogy with K3 surfaces, it is natural to expect that a rational Lagrangian fibration exists if and only if V has a divisor D with Bogomolov--Beauville square 0. This conjecture is proved in the case when V is the punctual Hilbert scheme of a generic algebraic K3 surface S. The construction of f uses a twisted Fourier--Mukai transform which induces a birational isomorphism of V with a certain moduli space of twi…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and let $H_G(d,N)$ be the open locus of the Hilbert scheme $H(d,N)$ corresponding to Gorenstein subschemes of degree $d$ in the projective N-space. We proved in a previous paper that $H_G(d,N)$ is irreducible for $d\le9$ and $N\ge1$. In the present paper we prove that also $H_G(10,N)$ is irreducible for each $N\ge1$, giving also a complete description of its singular locus.
Let X be a smooth projective toric surface, and H^d(X) the Hilbert scheme parametrising the length d zero-dimensional subschemes of X. We compute the rational Chow ring A^*(H^d(X))\_Q. More precisely, if T is the two-dimensional torus contained in X, we compute the rational equivariant Chow ring A\_T^*(H^d(X))\_Q and the usual Chow ring is an explicit quotient of the equivariant Chow ring. The case of some quasi-projective toric surfaces such as the affine plane are described by our method too.
Let S be a smooth projective surface, and consider the following two subvarieties of the Hilbert scheme parameterizing closed subschemes of S of length n: A = {subschemes with support in a fixed point of S} B = {subschemes with support in one (variable) point of S} A and B have complementary dimensions in the Hilbert scheme. We prove that the intersection number [A].[B] = n(-1)^(n-1), answering a question by H. Nakajima.
Let H_{ab} be the equivariant Hilbert scheme parametrizing the 0-dimensional subschemes of the affine plane invariant under the natural action of the one-dimensional torus T_{ab}:={(t^{-b},t^a), t\in k^*}. We compute the irreducible components of H_{ab}: they are in one-one correspondence with a set of Hilbert functions. As a by-product of the proof, we give new proofs of results by Ellingsrud and Stromme, namely the main lemma of the computation of the Betti numbers of the Hilbert scheme H^l parametrizing the 0-dimensional subschemes of the affine plane of length l and a description of Bialyn…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field and let $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$ be the open locus of the Hilbert scheme $\Hilb_{d}(\p{N})$ corresponding to Gorenstein subschemes. We prove that $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$ is irreducible for $d\le9$, we characterize geometrically its singularities for $d\le 8$ and we give some results about them when $d=9$ which give some evidence to a conjecture on the nature of the singular points in $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface over an algebraically closed field $k$ such that $char(k) \neq 2$. Let $X^{[d]}$ denote the punctual Hilbert scheme of zero dimensional quotients of degree $d$ and $X^{(d)}$ denote the symmetric product of $X$. For $\ell \neq 2$, we give a formula for the $\ell$-primary part of the Brauer group of $X^{[2]}$. We show that the Hilbert to Chow morphism induces an isomorphism of cohomological Brauer groups for $d=2$ and a similar result for $d \geq 3$. Let $Q(r,d)$ denote the punctual Quot-scheme parametrising zero dimensional quotients of $\mathcal{O}_X^{ \o…
For a finite subgroup $Γ\subset \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ and $n\geq 1$, we construct the (reduced scheme underlying the) Hilbert scheme of $n$ points on the Kleinian singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/Γ$ as a Nakajima quiver variety for the framed McKay quiver of $Γ$, taken at a specific non-generic stability parameter. We deduce that this Hilbert scheme is irreducible (a result previously due to Zheng), normal, and admits a unique symplectic resolution. More generally, we introduce a class of algebras obtained from the preprojective algebra of the framed McKay quiver by a process called cornering, a…
We prove that the complex cobordism class of any hyper-Kähler manifold of dimension $2n$ is a unique combination with rational coefficients of classes of products of punctual Hilbert schemes of $K3$ surfaces. We also prove a similar result using the generalized Kummer varieties instead of punctual Hilbert schemes. As a key step, we establish a closed formula for the top Chern character of their tangent bundles.
In this paper we provide a new method to certify that a nearby polynomial system has a singular isolated root with a prescribed multiplicity structure. More precisely, given a polynomial system f $=(f\_1, \ldots, f\_N)\in C[x\_1, \ldots, x\_n]^N$, we present a Newton iteration on an extended deflated system that locally converges, under regularity conditions, to a small deformation of $f$ such that this deformed system has an exact singular root. The iteration simultaneously converges to the coordinates of the singular root and the coefficients of the so called inverse system that describes th…
Let $S$ be the affine plane regarded as a toric variety with an action of the 2-dimensional torus $T$. We study the equivariant Chow ring $A_{K}^*(Hilb^n(S))$ of the punctual Hilbert scheme $Hilb^n(S)$ with equivariant coefficients inverted. We compute base change formulas in $A_{K}^*(Hilb^n(S))$ between the natural bases introduced by Nakajima, Ellingsrud and Strømme, and the classical basis associated with the fixed points. We compute the equivariant commutation relations between creation/annihilation operators. We express the class of the small diagonal in $Hilb^n(S)$ in terms of the equiva…
We use basic algebraic topology and Ellingsrud-Stromme results on the Betti numbers of punctual Hilbert schemes of surfaces to compute a generating function for the Euler characteristic numbers of the Douady spaces of "n-points" associated with a complex surface. The projective case was first proved by L. Göttsche.
The study of the stratification associated to the number of generators of the ideals in the punctual Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plain goes back to the '70s. In this paper, we present an elegant formula for the E-polynomials of these strata.
The intersection of a complex plane curve with a small three-sphere surrounding one of its singularities is a non-trivial link. The refined punctual Hilbert schemes of the singularity parameterize subschemes supported at the singular point of fixed length and whose defining ideals have a fixed number of generators. We conjecture that the generating function of Euler characteristics of refined punctual Hilbert schemes is the HOMFLY polynomial of the link. The conjecture is verified for irreducible singularities y^k = x^n, whose links are the k,n torus knots, and for the singularity y^4 = x^7 - …
An open question is whether the Hilbert scheme of points of a high dimensional affine space satisfies Murphy's Law, as formulated by Vakil. In this short note, we instead consider the loci in the Hilbert scheme parametrizing punctual schemes with a given Hilbert function, and we show that these loci satisfy Murphy's Law. We also prove a related result for equivariant deformations of curve singularities with $\mathbb G_m$-action.
We study completely the Hilbert scheme and punctual Hilbert scheme of a nodal curve, and the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of curves acquiring a node. The results are then extended, less completely, to flag Hilbert schemes, parametrizing chains of subschemes. We find, notably, that if the total space $X$ of a family $X/B$ is smooth (over an algebraically closed field $\k$), then the relative Hilbert scheme $Hilb_m(X/B)$ is smooth over $\k$ and the flag Hilbert schemes are normal and locally complete intersection, but generally singular.
We give a method of counting the number of curves with a given type of singularity in a suitably ample linear series on a smooth surface using punctual Hilbert schemes. The types of singulaties for which our methods suffice include the topological type with local equation x^a +y^b with b-1 < a < 3b+1. We work out the example of curves with the analytic type of singularity with local equation x^2+y^n for 1<n<9.
By using a Fourier-Mukai transform for sheaves on K3 surfaces we show that for a wide class of K3 surfaces $X$ the punctual Hilbert schemes $\Hilb^n(X)$ can be identified, for all $n\geq 1$, with moduli spaces of Gieseker stable vector bundles on $X$ of rank $1+2n$. We also introduce a new Fourier-Mukai type transform for such surfaces.
Thom polynomial describes the cohomology class Poincaré dual to the locus of particular singularity of a generic holomorphic map. In this paper we derive a closed formula for the generating function of its coefficients. The method is based on a new construction of the embedding space of punctual Hibert scheme that we call the non-associative Hilbert scheme. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated on explicit computation of a number of Thom polynomials, including those associated with singularities of Thom-Boardman types~$Σ^{i,j}$, $Σ^{2,1,1}$, $Σ^{2,2,1}$, and~$Σ^{2,2,2}$.
An example of potential density of rational points on the second punctual Hilbert scheme of certain K3 surfaces is treated in detail. This is an amplification of some remarks made by O'Grady and Oguiso.
We work out details of the extrinsic geometry for two Hilbert schemes of some contemporary interest: the Hilbert scheme of two points on the projective plane and the dense open set parametrizing non-planar clusters in the punctual Hilbert scheme of clusters of length four on affine three-space with support at the origin. We find explicit equations in natural projective, respectively affine embeddings for these spaces. In particular, we answer a question of Bernd Sturmfels who asked for a description of the latter space that is amenable to further computations. While the explicit equations we f…
We study tautological vector bundles over the Hilbert scheme of points on surfaces. For each K-trivial surface, we write down a simple criterion ensuring that the tautological bundles are big and nef, and illustrate it by examples. In the K3 case, we extend recent constructions and results of Bini, Boissière and Flamini from the Hilbert scheme of 2 and 3 points to an arbitrary number of points. Among the K-trivial surfaces, the case of Enriques surfaces is the most involved. Our techniques apply to other smooth projective surfaces, including blowups of K3s and minimal surfaces of general type,…

We construct virtual fundamental classes on nested Hilbert schemes of points and curves in complex nonsingular projective surfaces. These classes recover the virtual classes of Seiberg-Witten theory as well as the (reduced) stable theory, and play a crucial role in the reduced Donaldson-Thomas theory of local-surface-threefolds that we study in [GSY17b] (arXiv:1807.05697). We show that certain integrals against the virtual fundamental classes of punctual nested Hilbert schemes are expressed as integrals over the products of the Hilbert scheme of points. We are able to find explicit formulas fo…
We give an ADHM description of the Quot scheme of points ${\rm Quot}_{\mathbb{C}^{n}}(c,r),$ of length $c$ and rank $r$ on affine spaces $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ which naturally extends both Baranovsky's representation of the punctual Quot scheme on a smooth surface and the Hilbert scheme of points on affine spaces $\mathbb{C}^{n},$ described by the first author and M. Jardim. Using results on the variety of commuting matrices, and combining them with our construction, we prove new properties concerning irreducibility and reducedness of ${\rm Quot}_{\mathbb{C}^{n}}(c,r)$ and its punctual version ${\rm…

A continuous map from R^m to R^N or from C^m to C^N is called k-regular if the images of any $k$ points are linearly independent. Given integers m and k a problem going back to Chebyshev and Borsuk is to determine the minimal value of N for which such maps exist. The methods of algebraic topology provide lower bounds for N, however there are very few results on the existence of such maps for particular values m and k. Using the methods of algebraic geometry we construct k-regular maps. We relate the upper bounds on N with the dimension of the locus of certain Gorenstein schemes in the punctual…
